What Are Other Countries Doing About GE Foods? The United States largely allows for the growth and import of genetically engineered (GE) foods and does not demand GE food labeling. California voters will have the opportunity in November to change that by voting yes on Proposition 37 for Part 3 of an Ongoing Series
the labeling of GE foods.
Other countries have taken a stronger stand against GE foods by demanding the banned or labeling of these foods.
Egypt has banned the import and export of GE foods. In Algeria, both the planting and distribution of GE foods are illegal. The Thai government has committed to GE-free rice, as well as bans on imported GE crops. Sri Lanka also has a ban on imported GE food. In Asia, China, Japan, and the Philippines all have laws limiting GE foods. Japan does not produce any GE crops; however they import food from countries growing GE foods. In the Middle East,
Saudi Arabia has banned the growing of GE foods. South American countries, such as Brazil and Paraguay, have restrictions on GE foods. Peru approved a 10-year ban on GE crops. The European Union has considered a Europe-wide banning of GE foods. Individual European countries, such as Norway, Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, and Portugal have put in place GE restrictions.

France made an important step in the no-GE movement by specifically defining exactly what "GMO-free" means when it comes to food labeling. Ireland has banned all growing and cultivating of GE foods. Norwegian regulators have said no to a GE potato. Hungary has banned GE seed. Once discovered they were being using, the country
destroyed 1000 acres of Monsanto corn fields that were littered with GE crops. Ireland banned the growth of any GE foods, and the country has also made available a GE-free label that can be placed on animal products raised with feed free of GMOs. The government's two coalition partners signed the agreement that officially declares Ireland a "GE-free
Zone. All together there are around 50 countries requiring labeling of GE foods.
What do they all know? Why not the US? In general, the US population has been less aware of the existence of GE food. Isnt it time that we in the United States take action to at least require labeling so we can make an informed choice? It is your right to know.
