Climate Change
Climate change is arguably the most serious challenge the world faces today. Despite the current global economic crisis, if the planets temperature continues to rise unabated, according to scientists around the world, the consequences could well be such that, in addition to the absolute destruction, loss of life and su ering this would cause through extreme weather conditions, the people displacement and rebuilding required will only add to the worlds current economic burden. It is already estimated that if everyone lives in the world like we do today in the UK and other developed countries we would require almost 3 planets to sustain us all! With an alarming increase in the global population and the subsequent rise in consumption this will bring, something has to be done.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Since everything we all do has an impact on the environment such as travelling, cooking, watching TV, using computers, etc., whether you are an individual, a business, a government or NGO, we all have a responsibility to do our part in tackling global warming in whatever way we can. As a business your carbon footprint will likely be scrutinised far more closely in the coming years as consumers become more aware of the problems we are facing due to climate change and the impact it will have if not addressed. For any organisation, large or small, the issue of sustainability is now paramount in todays world and reaching the point of necessitation rather than simply a nice idea.

Remember Fair-trade was not mainstream when it was rst introduced and neither were organic or free range products but now they are widely accepted and the majority of customers choose them over other products when given the choice. In much the same way, we believe that companies that actively engage in practices which do not damage the environment and aid local communities in developing countries, are more likely to appeal than those that do not.

Calculator
We provide online calculators for individuals and businesses looking to o set their emissions. This covers power sources for light and heat, etc. in the business or home, various forms of travel including ights, public transport, etc. and personal and / or company vehicles. With this tool comes a choice of quality projects and secure payment processes. Once a purchase is complete, a certi cate is issued showing the number of emissions that have been o set.

CONSULTANCY & CARBON AUDITING

If your business is larger and more complex, we would suggest a more accurate and bespoke service to measure your companys true carbon footprint. You may wish to review your eet vehicles, your waste and recycling processes, water usage, your employees travel, how you power your business and the impact of your supply chain, amongst others. In this instance it will require the expertise of a specialist environmental consultancy that can assist you with this. In keeping with our commitment to excellent service and impartiality, we are proud to be able to o er a choice of such consultants for this purpose from our strategic partners who will be able to advise you and guide you through the various options available depending on the level you wish to go to, i.e. Scope 1, 2 or 3. You may then decide which option and which consultancy matches your needs the closest and work with them through the process. Alongside this we will be able to source a project/s that will also suit your particular requirements. Since you may wish to incorporate your choice of project into your branding and marketing, we usually recommend projects which, in addition to reducing / eliminating GHGs from the environment, also have signi cant, measurable and permanent bene ts to the local communities surrounding the project. This makes a very positive and clear statement to everyone that you connect with, that you care about the environment and the social wellbeing of the people whose lives are directly impacted by the project.

Consumers should always look out for various international standards in the voluntary market such as VCS, Social Carbon, VER+ and Gold Standard. Certi ed Emission Reductions (CERs) are veri ed by the UN and meet the stringent requirements of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol. We are also able to provide European Union Allowances (EUAs) which are the permit certi cates also used within the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).

Good Company Who is O setting?

But more importantly smaller businesses are also getting involved with many of them being forced through some of the larger organisations that they do business with to clean up their act or lose the business to another company which is cleaner. In a situation where the heaviest polluters, who are bound by law to cap their emissions, (currently around 12,500 in Europe) have no choice but to reduce their carbon footprint, they are now, in many instances, insisting that the smaller companies that they trade with should also be required to show that they are actively reducing their own emissions in order to maintain the business relationship.

You may be surprised by how many businesses, large and small who are not currently mandated to reduce their emissions are actively going green and o setting their surplus emissions with carbon credits. Google bought over 1% of the entire voluntary o setting market in 2010 in addition to modifying their own business practices to reduce emissions and their competitors such as Apple and Microsoft are having to follow suit having been criticised in the press for being dirty.

Mandatory Carbon Reporting

To summarise, the reduction of carbon emissions to help reduce the worst e ects of climate change, is not going to go away. Although there are sceptics out there, the general consensus of opinion among scientists around the world is that, unless more action is taken now, time is running out before catastrophic and irreversible weather changes occur. This advice is being listened to by governments in countries everywhere. In addition to the existing EU ETS, there are currently 23 other countries looking at implementing cap and trade schemes whilst at the same time, more companies, not currently required by law to reduce their emissions, are actively changing their business practices to include sustainability measures, whether it be for PR and branding reasons or in anticipation of further legislation and of course, mandatory reporting. Below are a few recent news articles relating to the voluntary market and carbon reporting.....
