It means a slight crnckmg 1s acceptable m concrete such that the crack. width is less th
02 mm. It should be remembered that the entire force of tension is resisted by steel
not by concrete.
The face of the concrete away from the water face can be designed on cracA basis
provided a minimum of 115 mm uncracked section ts available on the water face, that is,
the depth of neutral from the water face is at least 115 mm in compression.
If the section is treated as a composite section, the depth of neutral axis will be
different than 0.5 D. Let the depth of neutral a.xis from the extreme compression edge 1s
x as shown in Fig. 22.2. Let us take moment of areas about the neutral axis :
