couple celebrates
milestone decades after
meeting in rural gay bar
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS

VILLAS, N.J. Vince Grimm had just left
the U.S. Army Security Agency after a two-
year deployment in Korea when he returned
to the Reading, Pa., gay bar scene. A 20-year-
old farm boy quickly caught his eye at the Big
Apple Bar.
We saw each other on and off at the bar,
said Grimm. He was cute, blonde and kind
of amboyant just my type.
More than ve decades later, Will Kratz
pointed out with a hearty chuckle during
an interview at their home that overlooks
Delaware Bay a few miles north of New
Jerseys southernmost point that they
consummated their relationship in the back
of a 1957 Cadillac. There was plenty of
room, added Grimm.
Kratz, who joked he was 13 when asked his
age (he turns 73 later this year,) noted that

Experts debate impact of
running mate choice;
Wis. lawmaker has anti-gay record
By CHRIS JOHNSON

Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romneys
selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate generated a
media frenzy this week with pundits on both sides of the aisle
disagreeing over how much the Wisconsin congressman
will help the ticket.
Sean Theriault, whos gay and a political scientist at
the University of Texas, Austin, said the choice certainly
doubles down on the Ryan budget plan, which would zero
out funding for Medicare in favor of a voucher system and
would privatize a portion of Social Security.
While the Ryan pick may help in Michigan, Ohio and
Wisconsin, it will likely hurt in the old states like Iowa,
Florida and Pennsylvania, Theriault said. In part, that
dynamic has played out these past couple of news cycles

Longtime Md. activist
Polyak on her decision
to step down
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The former chair of Equality Marylands
board of directors stressed this week that
she remains optimistic that voters will
uphold the states same-sex marriage law
in November.
The polling trend is denitely way more
positive than it has been in the last couple
of years, but we continue to see evidence
of people feeling strongly in another
way, said Lisa Polyak, referring to the
controversy over Chick-l-A President Dan
Cathys comments against marriage rights
for gays and lesbians. She also described
Josh Levin of Marylanders for Marriage
Equality as a very effective campaign
manager who has begun to receive the
resources she said he needs to defend
the same-sex marriage law at the ballot.
Polyak added she feels that both President
Obamas support of nuptials for gays and
lesbians and the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored Peoples
resolution in support of the issue provided
the campaign with additional momentum.
If we win in November, it will be in
large measure because of those two
events, she said. The campaign, rightly,
is coming in under that and doing their
job efciently and well.
Polyak and her partner of more than 30
years, Gita Deane, have remained two of
the most prominent gures in the ght for
marriage for gays and lesbians in Maryland
since they became the lead plaintiffs in the
same-sex marriage lawsuit that Equality
Maryland and the American Civil Liberties
Union led in 2004. The Maryland Court
of Appeals in 2007 ultimately upheld the
constitutionality of the states ban on
nuptials for gays and lesbians, but Polyak
stressed to the Blade that she and Deane
simply wanted to protect their children.
The reason we got involved in the rst
place was because weve had all of these
sorts of unexpected experiences trying to
take care of our kids, she said, pointing
to obtaining health care and passports for
the couples two daughters and entering
the country with them were among the
difculties they faced. Starry eyed, we
thought, well, well get involved with the
marriage litigation because you know if
we were married we wouldnt have these
problems, although of course we had no
idea what was ahead.
Polyak said that the children of she and
her wife Deane, Maya, who is 16, and Devi,
who is 13, were fairly renascent about
their decision to challenge Marylands
same-sex marriage ban.
For the older one, we told her that
we were going to be in the litigation and
we told her why in terms that we thought
were appropriate for her [what] it boiled
down to is that we wanted to be married
and that we couldnt be married right now
because of the way that the law was and
just that she was shocked. And she told us
so, she recalled.
Ultimately, for me especially it was
important for them to see that even when
things dont go the way you want the rst
time, you dont give up, said Polyak as
she stressed the need to hold ourselves
together for our girls so that they didnt
think bad things were going to happen to
them or to our family.
More than four years after Marylands
highest court ruled against them in Deane
and Polyak v. Conaway, state lawmakers
approved a same-sex marriage bill.
Gov. Martin OMalley signed it into law
in March. Of course happiness, said
Polyak when asked about her reaction.
More than that just relief at not having
to visit it again next year, hopefully, with
the referendum not withstanding because
I think everybody who has worked on this,
truthfully, is exhausted.
The looming likelihood of a referendum
on the same-sex marriage law once the
governor signed it factored heavily into
their decision to marry in D.C. last year.
Attorney General Douglas Gansler said in
Feb. 2010 that the state could recognize
same-sex marriages that were legally
performed in other jurisdictions. OMalley
subsequently ordered state agencies to
recognize such unions.
My partner Gita felt very strongly about
us getting older, about our kids getting
older and you know what would happen if
we couldve got married and we didnt get
married, what might that bring if something
happened to one of us, and that has to do
with our family situation basically, said
Polyak. Again, looking again through the
eyes of our girls, they knew that marriage
was available in D.C. and of course Gita
and I wanted to be married. We werent
telegraphing, of course, any kind of
negativity about the ongoing legislation.
We literally went down to D.C. on the down
low and we got married with a very small
group of people.
Polyak spoke to the Blade less than a
month after she stepped down.
She was appointed acting chair of
Equality Marylands board of directors
in June 2011 after attorney Chuck Butler
resigned in the wake of former executive
director Morgan Meneses-Sheets April
2011 departure from the organization.
The board voted to appoint Polyak
chair during Equality Marylands annual
meeting in January.
I dont know about lessons learned,
but I know for Patrick Wojahn, who was the
other board chair, and myself, both he and
I were plaintiffs in the marriage litigation,
and then just through serendipity found
ourselves as the board chairs of the
respective boards at the time when
Equality Maryland went through all those
difculties, she said. I think somehow for
both of us we werent going to let it to fall
apart. In retrospect I cant believe that
we did it, but I think its just like anything
if you really believe in something, you
nd a way.
In spite of her departure from Equality
Maryland, Polyak said she plans to continue
to advocate on behalf of LGBT families and
children. She remains the online moderator
of Families with Pride, a group for LGBT
parents in Baltimore. And it plans to hold a
reunion in the coming weeks.
Both my girls are getting ready to think
about college. And so thats always time
consuming and lots of planning and I
want to share in that time with them, said
Polyak. I have to say both for Gita and for
myself, our focus has always been about
what is the lack of law, what the lack of
protections do to children and so Im fairly
certain that ending Equality Maryland
wont be the end of my sort of advocacy
for equality for our community.

vandalized
Frederick police continue their
investigation into who may have
used pro-gay stickers and other
items to vandalize a local Chick-
l-A last weekend.
Captain Tim Clark of the
Frederick County Sheriffs Ofce
told the Blade that ofcers found
blue and yellow Human Rights
Campaign stickers, rainbow
signs and what he described as
several homemade posters with
statements on the restaurants
windows when they responded to
the scene on Urbana Pike. Clark
said the vandalism took place
sometime between midnight on
Saturday and 2:40 p.m. on Sunday
when he said the department rst
learned about the incident.
The ofce had received reports
from passersby that they had noticed
some posters, stickers and so forth
placed on the windows at Chick-
l-A, he said. We responded. The
deputy took a report.
Clark noted there was no
physical damage to the restaurant
on Urbana Pike, and management
had begun to remove the glue
used to secure the stickers and
posters to the wall. Investigators
continue to gather surveillance
footage from the area to identify a
potential suspect.
This incident took place nearly
a month after Chick-l-A President
Dan Cathy spoke out against
marriage rights for same-sex
couples during an interview with
the Baptist Press.
Roughly 15 people gathered
outside the downtown Silver
Spring Chick-l-A on Aug. 3 to
take part in a kiss-in to protest
Cathys comments.
Josh Levin, campaign director of
Marylanders for Marriage Equality,
the group seeking to defend the
states same-sex marriage law in
November, spoke out against the
vandalism.
We abhor any vandalism or
disrespect in this campaign, he
said in a post on the campaigns
Facebook page.
Chick-l-A did not immediately
return the Blades request for
comment.

Second victim in coma;
hundreds turn out for vigil
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Baltimore police continue to investigate
a shooting on Aug. 10 that left a gay
aspiring photographer dead and a
popular Mount Vernon community activist
in critical condition.
Ofcials said that Joseph Alexander
Alex Ulrich, Jr., 40, and Lawrence R.
Peterson, 56, were standing on the front
steps of a building near the Belvedere Hotel
on East Chase Street just before 4 a.m. on
Aug. 10 when shots rang out. Both victims
were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where
Ulrich died several hours later.
Peterson, who purchased Empire
House, the historic 1874 brownstone that
had once been Gov. William Pinkney
Whytes private residence, in 1996 and
converted it into a bed and breakfast,
remains in a coma.
Police took the unusual step of
releasing the victims photographs in
hopes of generating additional leads
investigators have yet to identify any
potential suspects, but Det. Jeremy
Silbert of the Baltimore Police Department
described one of the assailants to the
Blade as a black male of average height
with a medium build who was wearing
dark clothes and a black baseball cap. He
described the second person as a short,
heavy-set black female who was wearing
dark clothing and a skull cap.
Anthony Giuglielmi of the Baltimore
Police Department added on Tuesday that
it appears the victims sexual orientation
did not play a role in the shooting.
Theres no evidence thus far that it has
anything to do with a hate crime, he told
the Blade.
Ulrich, who grew up in Smithsburg
near Hagerstown in Washington County,
attended Salisbury State University on
the Eastern Shore where he was active in
the schools theater community. He had
been an actor and worked with children
with special needs in Gettysburg, Pa.,
before moving to Baltimore in the spring
to start his photography career. He lived
on the 900 block of North Calvert Street in
Mount Vernon, the heart of the citys gay
community, with best friend Glenn Bennett.
Knowing him was just like being inside
of joy, Bennett, who met Ulrich 20 years
ago when he began studying at Salisbury
State, told the Blade. He was just the
most friendly person, so very sweet and
kind. He knew how to have a good time
and he enjoyed a good laugh. We honestly
have spent 20 years laughing hysterically
together, which has been quite wonderful.
Bennett said that a Pennsylvania art
gallery had exhibited four of Ulrichs
photographs just before he died.
He, for a very long time, had
been wanting to just be a full-edged
photographer and had started working
toward that, he said. He had been
dreaming for years and years and years of
moving to Baltimore and was nally able
to do it and actually started to have all
those things happen for him. It makes it
that much more bittersweet for all of us.
Ian Finkenbinder, who met Ulrich
through Bennett, echoed these
sentiments.
Alex was an amazing funny, spirited
individual who enriched and brightened
the lives of everyone around him, he said.
We are all devastated and left poorer for
his absence in our lives.
A vigil for Ulrich and Peterson was held
Tuesday in West Mount Vernon Place
in Baltimore attended by hundreds of
supporters. A second memorial was held
in Smithsburg on Wednesday night.
Ulrichs wake was held at the Rest Haven
Cemetery in Hagerstown on Thursday. His
funeral is scheduled to take place at St.
Anns Catholic Church in Hagerstown on
Friday at 11 a.m.
Police are asking anyone with
information about the shooting to call
homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
All callers will remain anonymous. Metro
Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward
of up to $2,000 for information leading to
the arrest and indictment in this case. Call

Lanier joins rally against
anti-LGBT violence
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier, a contingent of police ofcials, two members of
the City Council, and civic activists from the citys Bloomingdale and Eckington
neighborhoods participated in a rally and walk Thursday night against anti-LGBT
violence.
Chanting From Ward 1 to Ward 8, stop the violence, stop the hate, about 100
people gathered outside the Big Bear restaurant in Bloomingdale at First and R
Street, N.W., where organizers staged a rally.
A smaller contingent of about 60 people then walked several blocks to Third
Street and Lincoln Road, N.E., in Eckington near where a gay male couple was
attacked and beaten on July 22.
We are here in response and defense against what happened on the 22nd
and the prevailing rise of violence in the District of Columbia in general, said gay
activist Nick McCoy, the lead organizer of the event.
Were here today to showcase the broad support of our community that
represents black, white, LGBT, artistic, business and heterosexual, McCoy said.
Tonight, instead of silence, were raising our voices together.
Police said yoga instructor Michael Hall, 29, and his partner Michael Roike, 28,
were attacked by three unidentied youths who shouted anti-gay names before
punching and kicking the two men. Hall suffered a fractured jaw and broken face
bone and underwent surgery at Howard University Hospital as a result of his
injuries.
No arrests have been made in the incident. Lanier said an active investigation
continues and police are appealing to the community for witnesses to help
identify the attackers.
Hall and Roike didnt attend the rally and walk. McCoy said the two were invited
but declined, saying they were not ready to participate in such an event.
A.J. Singletary, chair of Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) told the
rally that D.C. has the highest rate of anti-LGBT violence in the nation and that
between 2005 and 2011 anti-gay crime increased 86 percent.
He said police statics show 21 hate crimes based on the victims sexual
orientation have been reported so far this year, compared to 15 reported as of
August 2011.
This is absolutely unacceptable, Singletary said. The only way we can
change this is to work together as one community.
Lanier joined the walk at the site near where the attack against the gay couple
took place. She praised organizers and participants for rallying the community
against crime.
I wish we could do this more often because it sends a message that communities
were formed for the protection of the community, she said. Sometimes we
forget that. So I think that when anybody in the neighborhood is victimized we
should stand up and come together and say, no, this is not tolerable. This is not
going to happen in our community.

Mendelson urges city to
settle lawsuit charging
harassment, retaliation
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Acting D.C. City Council Chair Phil
Mendelson (D-At-Large) said he would like
to see the citys attorney general consider
settling a little noticed discrimination
lawsuit led against the District in January
2011 by two lesbian members of the
Metropolitan Police Department.
Det. Kennis M. Weeks and Ofcer Tonia
L. Jones charge in a 38-page complaint
led in U.S. District Court for the District of
Columbia that theyve been subjected to
discrimination, harassment and retaliation
based on their sexual orientation and sex
since September 2006, when they disclosed
they were in a same-sex relationship.
One would hope the alleged conduct
is no longer continuing, said Mendelson,
who chairs the Council committee that
oversees the police department. And I
would hope that the department has gotten
better since the time of these allegations.
The lawsuit charges that at least seven
sergeants, two lieutenants, and three
ofcers from the Seventh District along
with Seventh District Commander Joel
Maupin played some role in carrying out
the alleged discrimination.
Police ofcials created and tolerated
an environment in which employees could
harass plaintiffs on the basis of their sex and
sexual orientation without any investigation
or repercussions, the lawsuit says.
It says Weeks and Jones led
complaints of discrimination based
on sexual orientation and sexual
harassment in October 2007 with the
police departments Equal Employment
Opportunity Compliance Division.
On Nov. 19, 2007, MDPs Assistant
Chief, Peter Newsham, made a decision
not to investigate plaintiffs internal EEO
complaints, the lawsuit says.
Cathy Harris, the attorney representing
the two women, said Newsham instead
told them they should le their complaint
with the citys Ofce of Human Rights.
They were shocked that the
department wouldnt address this
internally, Harris said.
When asked about the case following an
Aug. 9 news conference on an unrelated
issue, Newsham told the Blade he couldnt
discuss details of a pending case.
With regards to any lawsuits, you know
that people draw up whatever type of
complaint they want, and just because
someone raises those issues doesnt mean
theyre true, he said. Things have to be
veried and investigated. So I think its
premature to draw any conclusion from a civil
complaint thats led somewhere, he said.
D.C. police spokesperson Gwendolyn
Crump said police are referring all inquires
about the case to the D.C. Attorney
Generals ofce, which is defending the
city against the lawsuit in court.
Ted Gest, a spokesperson for D.C.
Attorney General Irvin Nathan, said his
ofce also had no comment on the case.
Gest said that at the present time, the
ofces response to the case Tonia L. Jones
and Kennis M. Weeks vs. the District of
Columbia is reected in their court lings.
The court lings on behalf of the city
contest some of the claims made by
Weeks and Jones on procedural and
technical grounds, saying their attorneys
missed ling deadlines requiring that the
claims be dismissed. A March 23, 2011
brief led by Nathan and three other
attorneys from the Attorney Generals
ofce disputes several of Weeks and
Jones discrimination allegations on the
merits, saying Seventh District supervisors
based their actions on standard personnel
practices rather than discrimination.
On July 25, U.S. District Court Judge
Rosemary M. Collyer approved a motion
by the city calling for dismissal of several
of the claims in the case, including those
alleging that the police action violated
Weeks and Jones First Amendment
constitutional right of freedom of speech
by allegedly retaliating against them when
they led an internal police grievance
about the alleged discrimination.
Collyer also dismissed the plaintiffs
claim that police and the city violated their
Fourteenth Amendment rights to due
process and equal protection under the law.
But the judge left in place most of
Weeks and Jones other claims of sexual
orientation discrimination under the D.C.
Human Rights Act and sex discrimination
under Title VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act
of 1964.
In her ruling, Collyer noted that the D.C.
Ofce of Human Rights found probable
cause in several of the lawsuits allegations
that police ofcials committed sexual
orientation and sex discrimination against
Weeks and Jones in violation of the D.C.
Human Rights Act. Attorneys for Weeks
and Jones have since transferred the
case from the Human Rights Ofce to the
courts jurisdiction.
In its brief contesting the lawsuit, the
D.C. Attorney Generals ofce argued
that the Ofce of Human Rights also
found no probable cause that plaintiffs
were subjected to disparate treatment on
the bases of sexual orientation and sex
regarding their specic allegation that
they were not allowed to ride together in
a police cruiser on patrol duty.
The attorney generals brief also says no
probable cause was found for an allegation
in the lawsuit that a decision to give police
cases that Jones was working on to male
detectives was based on discrimination.
A court scheduling conference is set for
Aug. 28, where court observers say a trial
date might be scheduled.
Mendelson said he was unaware of
the lawsuit until the Blade informed him
about it last week and provided him with
an online link to the complaint.
Of course we dont know what the
facts are because this is still pending in
court, Mendelson said. Its discouraging
to read this kind of alleged conduct. And
of course the judicial process is one where
the facts will be determined, he said.
I would hope that the police department
is addressing this and the attorney general
is looking at whether it would be better
for the District to just settle the case and
ensure that this kind of conduct no longer
occurs, Mendelson said.
Although led in January 2011, the case
received no known news media coverage
until Aug. 3, when Courthouse News
Service published an online story reporting
that Judge Collyer dismissed some of
the claims in the case while upholding
others. Three days later, Hufngton Post
published a similar story with the link to
the Courthouse News Service story.
News of the case is likely to raise
concern among LGBT activists, who have
been assured by D.C. Police Chief Cathy
Lanier that anti-LGBT bias within the ranks
of the department was mostly a thing of
the past and that the department doesnt
tolerate such bias.
The lawsuit says the alleged
discrimination and harassment began
in September 2006 after Weeks and
Jones told one of their supervisors at the
Seventh District, Sgt. Jon Podorski, that
they were a couple. The two had been
squad car partners since early 2006 and
began a relationship in July of that year,
the lawsuit says.
Almost immediately thereafter, the
sergeants began harassing them and
subjecting them to a hostile working
environment on a frequent and continuing
basis, the suit says.
Plaintiffs complained about the
discrimination to MPD in January 2007,
it says. However, this had the effect of
continuing and increasing the harassment
and hostile work environment.
According to the lawsuit, several of the
sergeants named in the suit continuously
made derogatory comments about
Weeks and Jones in the presence of
fellow ofcers and supervisors. Among
other things, the suit says the sergeants
who served as Weeks and Jones
supervisors urged them to have sex
with men, with one sergeant referring to
Jones as the butch one and Weeks as
the femme one.
During a May 2007 party in which
many Seventh District ofcers were in
attendance, one sergeant shouted in a
loud voice to both Jones and Weeks, Do
you wanna fuck? the lawsuit says.
Plaintiffs were mortied, embarrassed
and threatened by this verbal assault,
which was within earshot of many of their
colleagues, the suit says.

Elsewhere, gay
candidates fare well
in primaries
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Lesbian U.S. Senate candidate Tammy
Baldwin will face former Wisconsin Gov.
Tommy Thompson in the general election
following this weeks primary results.
The Associated Press called the GOP
race for Thompson on Tuesday night.
According to WisconsinVote.org a
project of Wisconsin Public Radio and
Wisconsin Public Television Thompson
had 34.6 percent of the vote with around
81 percent of precincts reporting.
The GOP candidate who came closest
to him was hedge fund manager Eric
Hovde, who had 30.4 percent of the vote.
Former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann had
22.8 percent while Wisconsin Assembly
Speaker had 12.2 percent.
On the same night, Baldwin ofcially
claimed the Democratic nomination in
her pursuit of the U.S. Senate seat in
Wisconsin. The designation means shes
the rst openly gay person to have a major
partys nomination in a contest for a U.S.
Senate seat.
Thompson has a long history of service
in public ofce. He served as Wisconsins
governor from 1987 to 2001 and was
secretary of Health and Human Services
under former President George W. Bush.
In 2008, Thompson sought the Republican
nomination to run for the White House,
but dropped out early in his bid.
Thompsons victory in the Republican
primary is probably the most challenging
outcome for Baldwin because the former
governor is popular and was seen as a
moderate candidate with the greatest
appeal to mainstream voters.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Baldwin
criticized Thompson, saying hell stand
with those who already have too much
power and inuence in Washington.
I will ght to do whats right for the
middle class and Thompson will put
those at the very top and the big monied
special interests in Washington ahead
of Wisconsins hard working families,
Baldwin said.
Recent polls have put Baldwin either
even with Thompson or show him with
a slight lead. In a CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac
poll published last week, Baldwin ties
Thompson, 47-47. In a Marquette University
poll, Thompson leads Baldwin 48-43.
Still, Baldwin is in good position to take
on Thompson in terms of fundraising.
According to Federal Election Commission
reports, Baldwin has $7.1 million in net
receipts, $4.7 million in net expenditures
and $3.2 million in cash on hand.
In comparison, Thompson has $2.5
million in net receipts, $2.1 million in net
expenditures and $198,000 in cash on hand.
Arguably, Thompson was the least
anti-gay of the four major Republican
candidates in the running. During an
interview with Wisconsins CBS 58 earlier
this year, he said marriage should be left
to the states and he backs the Defense
of Marriage Act, but stopped short of
endorsing a Federal Marriage Amendment
for the U.S. Constitution.
I believe very strongly in the Defense
of the Marriage Act, Thompson said.
Marriage is one man and one woman. I
support that. Thats the federal law.
In other election news this week, the
gay candidate seeking to replace Baldwin
in the U.S. House claimed the Democratic
nomination in the congressional race all
but assuring him a seat in Congress at the
start of next year.
Mark Pocan, whos gay and a member
of the Wisconsin State Assembly, won
the Democratic nomination. His main
opponent in the primary was Kelda Helen
Roys, a fellow Assembly member.
Wisconsins 2nd congressional district,
which compromises Madison and
nearby areas, is heavily Democratic.
The Republican challenger Chad Lee, a
businessman, isnt expected to put up a
serious challenge this fall.
Voters on Tuesday also elected a Miami
Beach accountant as Floridas rst openly
gay state legislator.
The Miami Herald reported that David
Richardson, who will represent House
District 113 in Tallahassee, defeated Mark
Weithorn by a 33 to 27 percent margin.
Adam Kravitz received 24 percent of the
vote, while Waldo Faura garnered 16
percent. No Republicans entered the race.

Army promotes rst gay general
WASHINGTON At a ceremony last week at the Womens Memorial at
Arlington National Cemetery promoting her to Brigadier General status, Tracey
Hepner pinned the star to the uniform of Tammy S. Smith her wife making
her the rst openly gay member of the U.S. Army promoted to that rank.
Smith and Hepner were married in the District of Columbia in March 2011,
according to the New York Times, and prior to Smiths promotion, Hepner co-
founded the Military Partners and Families Coalition, which provides support
services for the families of gay and lesbian military personnel.
[P]articipating with family in traditional ceremonies such as the promotion is
both common and expected of a leader, Smith told the Times in a statement.
For years, gay and lesbian generals and admirals were forced to hide their
families in order to protect their careers, said Sue Fulton, a member of the
OutServe board of directors, in a statement. It is a great day for our military and
for our nation when this courageous leader is nally able to recognize her wife
for her support and sacrice in the same way that all military families should be
recognized for their service to our country.
As a colonel, Gen. Smith served as the chief of Army Reserve Affairs in
Afghanistan from December 2010 to October 2011. She is currently the deputy
chief of the Army Reserves.
Texas LGBT lawmaker identies as pansexual
AUSTIN Next terms only serving Texas lawmaker to openly identify as LGBT
has come out as pansexual.
Before winning her primary in May, Mary Gonzalez was identied in the press
as a lesbian. However, according to the Dallas Voice which had previously only
identied her as LGBT Gonzalez wanted to clarify her sexual orientation now
that the campaign is over.
During the campaign if I had identied as pansexual, I would have overwhelmed
everyone, Gonzalez told the Dallas Voice this week, adding that many dont know
what being pan means. Now that Im out of the campaign, Im completely much
more able to dene it.
Though similar to bisexual in that attraction is not limited to a single gender,
those who identify as pansexual reject labels like bisexual, gay and lesbian
because of their embrace of all gender identities.
Freedom to Marry invests $3 million in campaigns
NEW YORK Freedom to Marry announced this week that its investment in
three statewide ballot battles for same-sex marriage has topped $3 million.
With its most recent $500,000 donation to ballot campaigns advocating for
same-sex couples in Maine, Minnesota and Washington, Freedom to Marry says
it has reached its initial 2012 goal, and says it will now work to assist in raising an
additional $10 million needed by the three campaigns.
Earlier this year, the Washington Blade reported that Freedom to Marry would
not be involved in the effort to ght a ballot initiative attacking the new same-
sex marriage law in Maryland this year, citing negative polling numbers. More
recent polls show majority support for retaining the Maryland law. The group also
confronted criticism for its lack of involvement in a ballot battle in North Carolina
earlier this year that was lost by advocates against constitutionally barring same-
sex marriage.

Guard shot at
Family Research Council
FBI has suspect in custody, says motive unknown

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
The FBI and D.C. police are investigating a shooting in the lobby of the
headquarters building of the Family Research Council, one of the nations leading
anti-gay groups.
Police and the FBI said a suspect shot a security guard in the arm about 10:50
a.m. Wednesday in the buildings lobby at 801 G St., N.W., which is located
about a block away from the Verizon Center. The guard, who suffered a non-life-
threatening wound, was taken to a hospital for treatment, a police spokesperson
said.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and FBI Washington Field Ofce Director James
McJunkin told reporters at a news brieng outside the building that the FBI took
a male suspect into custody in connection with the case and had not charged him
as of early Wednesday afternoon.
The Washington Post reported that police and the FBI said they had yet to
determine a motive for the shooting.
We dont know enough about him or his circumstances to determine what his
connection is to this group or his mental state or what he was doing or thinking
of doing, the Post quoted McJunkin as saying. So were going to try to sort this
all out, pull the evidence together, do all the interviews we can, the Post quoted
McJunkin as saying.
Fox News reported an unidentied source familiar with the incident said the
suspect made statements regarding [the Family Research Councils] polices and
then opened re with a gun striking the security guard.
Neither D.C. police nor the FBI identied the shooter as of early Wednesday
afternoon.
According to the Post, McJunkin said the FBI became involved because of
the possibility that the incident could be classied as a federal crime. The Post
reported that as of early Wednesday, it was not clear whether D.C. police or the
FBI would take the lead in the investigation.
D.C. police spokesperson Araz Alali told the Blade that the FBI became involved
because the building in which the shooting occurred was federally owned. But
the U.S. General Services Administration, which administers federal buildings,
couldnt immediately be reached to conrm whether the federal government
owns or has an interest in the building.
A ag bearing the name of the Family Research Council hangs over the front of
the building. The words Faith, Family, Freedom are inscribed in the buildings
faade.
The Family Research Council and its executive director, Tony Perkins, have
long denounced homosexuality as immoral and have linked it to pedophilia. The
group has lobbied Congress and state legislatures in opposition to virtually all
LGBT rights legislation.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nationally recognized civil rights group,
has included FRC on its list of hate groups, saying it so classied the group
because of its use of false and misleading information to defame LGBT people in
a way that harms the LGBT community.
An FRC spokesperson couldnt immediately be reached for comment.
as Romney has tried to have the media
focus on his plan rather than the Ryan
plan. Regrettably for Romney, the Ryan
plan is written down and far more specic
than Romneys plan, which is still correctly
characterized by smoke and mirrors.
Theriault added the Ryan selection
is of no consequence to LGBT voters
because Ryan has been reluctant to talk
about LGBT issues over the course of his
political career, much like Romney has
generally steered clear of social issues
over the course of his campaign.
Ryan is no more interested in
talking about the anti-gay Republican
agenda than is Romney, Theriault
said. No doubt, they both will include
the protecting marriage line in their
speeches, but I would be surprised if they
expend any political capital to do so.
Polls have already shown the race
tightening between Romney and
President Obama, although they were
conducted before the Ryan selection
was announced. A Politico-George
Washington University battleground poll
published Monday found the candidates
in a dead heat: Obama had 48 percent
of support from poll responders, while
Romney had 47 percent. But in Ohio, one
battleground state, Obama maintains a
slight lead. Data from Public Policy Polling
published on Tuesday found that Obama
has a slight lead over Romney, 48-45.
Many observers said the selection
of Ryan, who is best known for being
the architect of the Republican version
of federal budgets, would elevate the
tone of the presidential race and focus
the candidates on economic issues. But
that doesnt seem to have taken place.
In a speech in Virginia on Tuesday, Vice
President Biden accused Republicans of
wanting to unchain Wall Street, saying,
Theyre going to put yall back in chains.
Andrea Saul, a Romney campaign
spokesperson, responded by saying
the remarks are not acceptable in our
political discourse.
The same day in Chillicothe, Ohio,
Romney said the Obama presidency was
angry and desperate and his campaign
was one of division and anger and hate.
The Obama campaign responded by
calling Romney unhinged.
Romney announced that Ryan was his
choice as running mate on Saturday in
Norfolk, Va., before the battleship U.S.S.
Wisconsin a ship that bears the same
name as the state Ryan represents in
Congress introducing his choice by
talking about Ryan losing his father at a
young age.
As he did, he internalized the virtues
and hard-working ethic of the Midwest,
Romney said. Paul Ryan works in
Washington, but his beliefs remain rmly
rooted in Janesville, Wis.
Romney initially made a gaffe when
he introduced Ryan by calling him the
next president of the United States as
opposed to the next vice president
a mistake the presidential candidate
acknowledged and corrected later on.
Upon taking the stage, Ryan attacked
President Obama for what he said were
failed policies over the course of the past
three-and-a-half years and said Romney
would change the course of the country
for the better.
This is a crucial moment in the life of
our nation, and it is absolutely vital that
we select the right man to lead America
back to prosperity and greatness, Ryan
said. That man is sitting right next to me.
His name is Mitt Romney, and he will be
the next president of the United States of
America.
In terms of LGBT issues, Ryan is a
notable selection among the possible
choices which were said to include U.S.
Rob Portman (R-Ohio), U.S. Sen. Marco
Rubio (R-Fla.) and Louisiana Gov. Bobby
Jindal (R) because Ryan voted in favor
of a sexual orientation-only version of
the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
when it came to the House oor in 2007.
R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of
the Log Cabin Republicans, commended
the Ryan choice because of his vote for
ENDA and his willingness to engage with
his organization.

allowed the gay bars to ourish because
they provided a steady stream of revenue
to what Grimm described as the most
corrupt city on the East Coast. He
said this pre-Stonewall scenario was a
far cry from nearby Philadelphia where
undercover ofcers regularly shook down
the citys gay bars.
That didnt really happen in Reading
because there was income coming in
from everywhere, said Grimm. There
was a price to pay for people that had
businesses and everything like that, but
he kind of controlled everything. The bars
were basically a safe place to go.
So were the streets, added Kratz.
Nothing bad ever happened on the
streets.
The couple, who celebrated their 51st
anniversary the day before the Blade
interviewed them on Aug. 9, stressed
that they never experienced any sort of
harassment or discrimination outside of
Kratzs much older brother who never
accepted his homosexuality. Their sexual
orientation was never a secret to their
parents and classmates. Everybody knew
us, said Grimm, 75. We were sexually
active in school; never had any problems.
No idea we were
setting a precedent
Kratz began to perform in drag on
stage in the backroom of the Zanzibar,
another downtown Reading gay bar, in
1959. Grimm quickly noted that Kratz was
underage at the time, but management
overlooked this fact.
They didnt give a shit at the bar, as
long as you behaved, as long as you
werent too small to get over the bar,
added Kratz.
Kratz decided a couple of years later that
he wanted to make the shows bigger. He
approached the owner of the Big Apple Bar
whose relatives owned a picnic grove outside
Reading with buildings and a pavilion. They
agreed to rent the space to him.
Then we decided, well weve got to
have money for these drag shows and
where are we going to get it? Well lets have
barbecue chicken parties, so we had three
a summer at that location, said Kratz.
Nearly 300 people paid $5 to attend
the rst party that took place in 1961,
but they quickly grew in popularity. Up to
1,500 revelers who came from as far away
as northern New Jersey, Baltimore and
even D.C. on themed buses that included
those dressed as Vatican ofcials and the
Pope attended the parties. A lesbian once
arrived on an elephant with two tigers she
borrowed from a local circus.
Grimm noted that they were the
Reading Brewerys largest single customer
the company delivered beer to the
parties in tractor trailer trucks. Organizers
also hired local reghters, police ofcers
and justices of the peace to work in the
parking lot to thwart underage people
who wanted to sneak into the gatherings.
There was no other place for them
to go, so that was like our rst line of
defense, said Grimm. Plus it made us
kind of look legitimate.
They soon, however, began to draw the
attention of the Pennsylvania State Police
because they created trafc jams on the
local roads. Grimm noted that some of
the troopers who investigated them were
homophobic.
We had some stand offs when they
would come in and just kind of sit there
in a car and try to intimate people, said
Grimm, who was the president of the
group that organized the party. Kratz was
its treasurer. One time I think I must have
stood out stood there just staring at em
for like an hour, not making a move: well,
when youre ready to ask me questions Ill
be happy to answer.
Grimm recalled one incident in which
the state police claimed that underage
people had attended the party. Troopers
called the state Liquor Control Board
that subsequently conscated the tractor
trailer that had delivered beer.
We got on the phone with the Reading
Brewery and said we have a problem,
recalled Grimm. They said you dont
have any problem. Were going to be
there with another tractor-trailer of beer
within the hour. Dont worry about the
Liquor Control Board; well take care of
them. Another tractor-trailer full of kegs of
beer showed up within the hour.
The only other incident that the couple
said they had was a rumored police raid.
The couple sought advice from another
local District Justice about what to do if
authorities arrested them, but she was
initially confused about the entire situation.
Oh my God youre having these huge
parties and all you guys are queer, said
the judge, according to Grimm. I said,
Yeah. She said, Well ... the law is the law
and Ill abide by the law. If youve not done
anything, if everything is in place you dont
have anything to worry about.
Grimm then reached out to a Reading
lawyer who worked for the American Civil
Liberties Union to cover my bases.
He also didnt understand the potential
problem that the couple faced.
I tried to explain everything to him and he
said the ACLU doesnt have anything to do
with a group like yours, said Grimm. They
havent even gotten involved yet in gay
groups. This was something totally new.
In addition to the three parties they
organized each year, Grimm and Kratz
also staged drag shows that featured
choreographers and up to 10 performers
on stage at any given time. Judy Garland
and Barbra Streisand proved popular
muses, but some participants wrote entire
operettas and made their costumes.
The re police people and the local
JPs kind of found out that we were
having these shows and they said, well
how come you never ask us to come to
these shows. We said you can come,
said Grimm. They started to come to
the Sunday matinees; they would come
in suits. Their wives would come in their
furs. It was totally unbelievable. This was
their theater. We were their theater and
they were actually the best audience that
we had. We got standing ovations. They
would go crazy. They couldnt wait for us.
A combination of Philadelphias
burgeoning drag scene and a lack of
interest among younger people prompted
the couple to end their parties in 1979.
It sounds like we were doing great
things only in retrospect now because
back then, we knew what we were doing,
but we had no idea what we were doing,
said Kratz, who designed displays for the
Strawbridge and Clothier department
store at the time. We knew our drag. We
knew how to sew costume. We had no idea
we were setting a precedent, for anybody.
We just wanted to provide a safe place
for the 1,500 or so people who ended up
coming and the 500-600 who came to our
shows in four weekends. We had no idea
we were pre-anything else like Stonewall.
We werent out on the streets looking for
freedom. We already had it.
Couples activism
reaches beyond Pa.
Grimm, a former engineer, joined a Bucks
County group that supported people with
AIDS at the beginning of the epidemic in
the early 1980s that became the template
for Pennsylvanias statewide service
organization for those with the virus. He
also volunteered for the South Jersey AIDS
Alliance and became a board member after
he and Kratz retired to Cape May in 1996.
They also joined GABLES Cape May,
an LGBT community and support group
with more than 200 members from across
the county that formed in the mid-1990s in
response to homophobic commentaries
about the areas growing gay population
that began to appear in the local newspaper.
The organization has raised nearly $150,000
for the local Red Cross chapter and other
community organizations. Both Grimm
and Kratz are also on the Lower Cape May
Regional High Schools advisory board.
We know that the gays that are going to
the high school over here are being harassed
and are being harassed by their classmates,
said Grimm, who said this bullying does not
occur at a nearby technical school where the
students are more accepting of their LGBT
classmates. The kids are basically walking
around hand-in-hand and nobody cares.
The group also played a role in efforts
to secure passage of both New Jerseys
domestic partnership registry and civil
unions law the couple entered into one
two days after the states civil unions law took
effect in 2007. Grimm, who is also a minister,
continues to ofciate these ceremonies
throughout the Cape May area.
The biggest reason for us to do it
immediately was death things, said Kratz.
When you die, the tax rate is astronomical.
Now thats going to be somewhat less.
Domestic partnership is not marriage, but its
close. Weve heard stories and meet people
that one lover died and they had to sell the
house and the business to pay the tax.

MoNique continues
support for marriage
Baltimore-born, Oscar-winning actress
MoNique is continuing her advocacy
for marriage equality in Maryland. On
Aug. 9, she sent a fundraising email on
behalf of the Human Rights Campaign,
urging recipients to support the ght
for marriage equality in the Free State.
She previously recorded a video for
HRCs Americans for Marriage Equality
campaign. MoNique also delivered a
similar message for the Marylanders
for Marriage Equality campaign. In her
email, MoNique criticizes the tactics that
the opposition has used in seeking to
undo the law:
Nothing is more difcult than hearing
attacks being made on anyone, especially
my fellow Marylanders, however anti-
equality forces are not going to make
it easyThey say that children will be
hurt by having two moms or two dads
and that religious institutions are under
threat. You and I both know that simply
is not true.
We are thrilled that MoNique is
continuing her efforts to protect marriage
equality in Maryland, said HRC President
Chad Grifn. Our opponents are running
a deceptive and divisive campaign, but
MoNiques voice is representative of the
broad support for equality were seeing
across the state.
MoNique, who graduated from Milford
Mill High School in Baltimore County and
attended Morgan State University, won an
Oscar in 2009 for Best Supporting Actress
portraying an inner-city teenagers abusive
mother in the lm Precious.
Faith conversations at
weekly open house
Sixteen people attended the open house
last Friday at the Charles Village home of
Gerry Fisher and David Kimble where the
subject was having faith-based conversations
regarding marriage equality. Rev. Samuel
Offer, who is vice president and consultant
with the Washington Consulting Group, was
the guest speaker. Other notable participants
were Marylanders for Marriage Equality Field
Director Adam Limehouse, PFLAG leader
June Horner and community activist Rev.
Mother Meredith Moise.
The open house is a weekly open forum
and casual work meeting for volunteers
and supporters who are thinking about
volunteering. They meet each Friday
until the election at 2721 Guilford Ave. in
Baltimore beginning at 7 p.m.
There was great energy and
enthusiasm in the house tonight. Its taken
some effort, but I think were guring out
how to meet the community where its at
to foster stronger connections, while at
the same time getting the campaign what
it needs to win in November, which is only
a few months away, Fisher told the Blade.
We want everyone to win in this effort.

Light Brigade Maryland
holds bridge party
The newly formed Light Brigade Maryland
held its rst event on Aug. 16. The rst venue
for this effort took place at the Dulaney
Valley Road Bridge over the Baltimore
beltway. The sign read, Vote for Marriage
Equality and was visible to motorists below.
Inspired by a similar effort (Overpass
Light Brigade) in Wisconsin to recall Gov.
Scott Walker this past spring, volunteers
hold lighted panels at dusk on highway
overpasses and bridges that contain
messages promoting marriage equality. The
messages will vary but the goal is to bring
attention to the Civil Marriage Protection Act.

GOP ticket a threat to
women, gays, middle class
By naming Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.)
his running mate Mitt Romney has now
made it ofcial: He is a total captive of
the far right of the Republican Party.
I actually agree with both Republican
LGBT groups, Log Cabin and GOProud,
which said they consider Ryan a great
choice. I too believe he is a great choice
for the Democrats.
Ryan is an ideologue who will be dif-
cult for Romney to deal with. It appears
he has already realized that as his cam-
paign tried to distance him from his run-
ning mates budget by saying as presi-
dent he will develop his own. During
their 60 Minutes interview, Romney
said, Ryan is a leader in Congress who
will help get his agenda passed. The
problem with that statement is that in
more than 13 years in Congress Ryan has
only managed to get two bills passed
into law. The rst in 2000 renamed a U.S.
Post Ofce in his district and the second,
according to a column in the Hufng-
ton Post, was in December 2008, with
legislation to change the way arrows
(as in bows and arrows) are hit with an
excise tax. Specically, his bill amended
the Internal Revenue Code to impose a
39-cent tax per arrow shaft, instead of a
12.4 percent tax on the sales price. The
bill also includes points suitable for use
with arrows in the 11 percent excise tax
on arrow parts and accessories. This,
according to Romney, represents a ster-
ling record of leadership.
With Ryans selection, this election is
now what President Obama wants and
believes it should be not a referendum
on his rst term but a choice election
giving voters a clear choice on what the
future direction of our nation should be.
We either move boldly into the future
with President Obama or march back-
wards toward the 18th century with the
Romney/Ryan ticket. If you are a senior,
a woman, a member of the LGBT com-
munity, the middle class, a Latino or other
minority, then there is now a clearer rea-
son to reject the Republican Party.
Romney and Ryan oppose the Dream
Act; want to turn Medicare into a voucher
program; privatize Social Security; and
take us back to Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
The Republican Party is for tax breaks
for the rich and cuts in college loans for
the middle class and the poor. The Re-
publican Party nominated Scalia, Thomas
and Alito to the Supreme Court and want
more of the same.
Ryan sees himself as a policy wonk,
which he is. He is also an ideologue and
as with many ideologues he refuses to
compromise and stymies progress. Some
have called him a true believer and
for many the problem lies in what he be-
lieves. He is for overturning Roe v. Wade;
he supports education vouchers and a
constitutional amendment banning mar-
riage equality; he opposes allowing gays
and lesbians to serve in the military. Ryan
co-sponsored a personhood amendment
with 62 other Republicans, the Sanctity
of Human Life Act, which declares that a
fertilized egg shall have all the legal and
constitutional attributes of personhood.
This would in essence outlaw abortion,
some forms of contraception and in vitro
fertilization.
The Ryan budget claims rising nan-
cial aid is driving college tuition upwards
and proposes cutting the Pell Grant pro-
gram by $200 billion, which numerous
estimates claim could knock more than
one million students off of the program
over the next 10 years. In September
2011, Ryan agreed with Rick Perrys char-
acterization of Social Security as a Ponzi
scheme and since 2005 has advocated
it should be privatized and invested in
stocks and bonds.
Mitt Romney went to the far right
to win the Republican nomination.
His chances of becoming president
would have been greatly enhanced
had he run on his record as governor
of Massachusetts. But that was impos-
sible with those currently leading the
Republican Party. Naming Ryan as his
running mate has completed his race
to the very far right.
Beyond the presidential race, the se-
lection of Ryan could hurt the Republican
Party in congressional races. The Ryan
budget ideas havent faced a national
test but in one special election in a Re-
publican stronghold in upstate New York,
a District where there are 30,000 more
registered Republicans than Democrats
and where Ryans ideas on changing
Medicare were the centerpiece of the
election, the Democrat won.
There are less than 12 weeks to Elec-
tion Day. The choice is clear and I have
condence the American people will
choose the road forward rather than
marching back to the 18th century with
the Republican Party.

Love em or hate em, the biennial oppor-
tunity to vote for a hyper-local Advisory Neigh-
borhood Commission (ANC) member comes
this fall, as it has for the past 36 years following
the advent of Home Rule in the District.
Last week was the deadline to submit voter
signatures to qualify for the D.C. general elec-
tion ballot for nonpartisan ANC seats. While
the usual majority of uncontested single con-
tender races and those without a declared
candidate will appear on localized ballots
garnering votes of only a portion of those
participating at the polls, there is a detectable
change underway in many areas of the city.
In addition to the normal churn factor
of departing ANC members, a number of
high-prole and long-serving commission-
ers have chosen not to seek reelection.
In the rapidly developing and population
increasing 14th and U streets commercial zone
in Northwest Washington, for example, contro-
versial 10-year incumbent Ramon Estrada is not
a candidate. A notorious objector of nearly every
restaurant and bar liquor license application and
development project in surrounding areas and
representing the Dupont Circle outer extrem-
ity comprising ANC 2B-09, Estrada had won
increasingly narrow victories in recent elections.
Observers have noted that both newer
and younger residents have led to run this
year, continuing a nascent trend, particularly
in areas experiencing signicant develop-
ment and an inux of their contemporaries.
For many, the decision to seek election be-
gan with basic investigation of what the ob-
scure ANCs do and how they operate.
A newfound spirit of engagement by a
more forward-thinking segment of residents
of all ages supporting the aspects of urban
life that attracted them to the city and their
neighborhoods is frequently the motivator.
Many of these new faces have a refresh-
ingly divergent attitude about a potential role
as a commissioner, eschewing past objections
about neighborhood growth and opposition
to expansion in the number of restaurants,
bars and other popular amenities. They tend
to be more focused on public safety and
crime, transportation and parking, recreation
facilities, environmental and sanitation issues
as well as engendering a more cooperative
context for businesses and residents.
The threshold for ballot access is low, re-
quiring the signatures of only 25 registered
voters within a Single Member District
(SMD). Each of the now reapportioned 296
ANC-SMD areas represent approximately
2,000 total residents, including those not
yet of voting age. Most residents are un-
able to identify their complex district des-
ignation or name their commissioner.
ANCs, as the name implies, offer advisory in-
put at D.C. Council public hearings, recommen-
dations to city agencies and commissions during
citizen input opportunities, and opinions about
liquor licensing and zoning matters at agency
board hearings for which they are granted for-
mally deferential consideration. Critics complain
that ANC tactical ability to complicate neighbor-
hood development approvals is oftentimes un-
representative of majority opinion.
ANC 1B-02 commissioner Alexandra
Lewin-Zwerdling, having won a special
neighborhood election late last year for
an open seat abutting U Street opposite
Estradas district along 14th Street in the
adjacent ANC but not seeking a full term,
describes the rigors of the position in
stark terms. Despite having earned broad-
based commendation for her diligent and
dedicated efforts adjudicating resident
tensions and mitigating concerns, she
says the experience can be frustrating.
Although representing close to 4,000
constituents in the now-Census-adjusted
newly recongured district double the
proscribed number due to recent population
increases, I always hear from the same 10
people, Lewin-Zwerdling says.
She notes spending a lot of time attempt-
ing to navigate between these loud voices and
the overall neighborhood indicating that it is ex-
tremely difficult to resolve the angst and anxiety
of a few toward neighborhood businesses, even
long-term ones. Nonetheless, she looks for-
ward to remaining active in community projects
in a more selective and productive way.
Whether an illustration of democracy
gone wild, a efdom for aspiring over-
lords, an opportunity for residents to make
a civic contribution or the rst rung on the
ladder of seeking higher ofce, ANCs are
an entrenched local institution.
How the function and focus of these
small neighborhood commissioner group-
ings evolves to better reect a changing
city increasingly desirous of neighbor-
hood development and commercial en-
terprise remains to be seen.

When singer/songwriters Matt Alber and Tom Goss last
performed together in Washington, the city was buried under 20-35
inches of snow. Despite the abnormally awful weather, people came
out to hear their acoustic love songs.
Now the two are reuniting at Atlas (1333 H St., N.E.) on Sunday
evening. Coming from opposite ends of the country, Alber brings
his guitar from San Francisco to join the D.C.-based Goss to sing
about nding love, losing love and starting anew.
Though the pair may sing about similar things, both say that their
styles are very different.
Matt has a awless voice, his arrangements are beautiful, Goss
says. Mine are a little more aggressive than his. People typically say
that mine are working class love songs, a little grittier. It is not perfect.
Alber, a two-time Grammy winner, began his musical career
when he joined the group Chanticleer, a classical vocal group that
performs baroque and renaissance music. When he rst entered
pop music, Alber and Goss admired each others music from afar.
We met in San Francisco in 2009 and Tom showed me the
ropes, Alber says. He encouraged me to take my guitar around
as he does.
Goss, a former Catholic seminarian-turned guitarist, began
performing in D.C. coffeehouses in 2006 and has since released
two albums and performed in about 100 cities nationwide. In 2011,
Blade readers named him best musician. A shameless romantic,
many of his songs are inspired by his husband.
I think we write about what we know, Goss says. You have the
ability to dream of the world as you would want it.
Alber uses his music to express his wants and some problems he
has faced.
I use my guitar and my piano as my therapist, he says. I sing about
things like looking for Mr. Right or working out personal demons.
He says being gay denitely inuences what he writes about and
how he sings about love. His songs arent just for LGBT listeners,
but being out gives them a level of unwritten honesty he says gay
listeners appreciate.
Most of our audience members are super cute gay couples, but
straight couples can have just as good of a time. What I write about
love can apply to all couples, he says.
Mixed with his original songs, Alber also does what he describes
as unexpected covers by artists such as Whitney Houston and
Madonna.
While love is a major subject in their music, the artists often touch
on challenges that face the LGBT community. Goss, especially, has
sung about subjects such as the Dont Ask Dont Tell law.
In some of my songs I explored the lives of men in the military
who have been affected by DADT, he says. Soldiers who had to
hide their identities and who they loved.
Goss says he and Alber work well together, yet only get to see
each other a few days a year. This weekends performance will be
the fourth theyve done in the past two years.
I just really admire his music, Goss says. I always learn a lot
when I play.
Alber is also looking forward to reuniting with Goss and is
especially excited by the slim chance of extreme weather.
There is absolutely no chance of snow and the Atlas is air
conditioned, he says.
At the end of the night, Alber and Goss will be sitting in the lobby
to speak with audience members. They will also be offering a VIP
private performance an hour before the doors open to the public.

Hamid Lagder knows four languages his native Arabic, the French he
studied in his native Marrakech, Morocco, the Russian he mastered during his
seven years there and, of course, English. Hes mostly lived in Washington since
winning a Green Card lottery and arriving here in 2005.
Lagder doesnt claim to have any special afnity for mastering new
languages. He just adapts to where he is and his needs at the time. What hes
most passionate about is painting. He works by day as an IT manager for an
e-commerce company but has been painting since he was a child.
I could paint all day long, Lagder, 45, says. Maybe if I still lived in Morocco
I could do it full time but the situation there is different. Here you have to pay
bills and everything.
Hes having his rst exhibition Thursday at Puro Caf Bar & Lounge (1529
Wisconsin Ave., N.W.) from 7-10 p.m. (one night only). About 12 of the acrylics
on canvas landscapes and abstract will be on display. More information is
at hlagder.com.
There are so many things you can express in art, he says. A lot of these
works tell a story.
Lagder says it wasnt particularly hard for him to come to terms with being
gay, though hes not out to his family in Morocco, where he visits once or twice
per year.
The gay life you have in Europe and America just doesnt exist there, he
says. They would probably think it was just something to be cured. They
wouldnt understand at all.
Lagder, who loves Western pop culture, enjoys painting and traveling in his
free time. Hes single and lives on H Street.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
I have been out to friends since I

WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
Sax is one of the best nightspots in
D.C. I love the interior and the music.
Its just what D.C. needs an upscale

Diana was still alive.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
The recent deaths of gone-too-soon
Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Honesty. And no ice in my Diet Coke.

Golden Girls actress

Some people cant stand having stuff
around they dont use. Rue McClanahan
was not one of them.
The Golden Girls actress, who died
at age 76 in 2010 of a brain hemorrhage,
wanted fans to have a chance to have her
many personal belongings. Her best gay
friend, Michael J. LaRue, has organized
her items in a series of sales. The two met
at Studio 54 for an animal charity event
about 10 years before she died, LaRue
says.
For some reason, we could just crack
each other up all the time, LaRue says.
We just became really good friends. She
always joked about marrying me so she
could be Rue LaRue, but of course that
wouldnt have worked.
LaRue, who was collaborating with
the actress on a stage adaptation of her
memoirs, says McClanahan was a keeper
and collector.
Let me tell you, that woman was a
shopper and she saved everything,
he says. She had this sprawling urban
oasis in mid-town Manhattan she had
13 closets in the house and ve external
storage areas and you couldnt t a
paperclip in any one of them.
As per McClanahans instructions, after
family and friends had their pick, the rest
goes to auction. Some was sold in Beverly
Hills. A large sampling, including several
scripts, costumes and collectibles from
The Golden Girls, are available for
purchase at estateofrue.com. The items
are direct purchase and some are available
for about $100.
She really wanted the fans to have a
chance to have what they wanted, he says.
This isnt about generating a zillion dollars.
Its about getting the stuff out there.
LaRue says hes not a stuff person. He
has a drawing McClanahan made for him,
her ashes and her Emmy. Her only child,
her son Mark who lives in Texas, also took
many items he wanted. In all, McClanahan
named 22 beneciaries in her will.
LaRue says McClanahan was a great pal.
In addition to the work on the biography
adaptation (It was tight and really coming
together when she got sick, he says), a
lm crew followed the actress around for
two years while she worked on it. Of the
150 hours they shot, a documentary is
being made LaRue hopes will be nished
within 18 months or two years.
LaRue says McClanahan was completely
unguarded with him and had high regard
for her fellow actresses, Betty White and
the late Bea Arthur, though Arthur didnt
particularly care for White.
Betty and Rue were friends and Rue
and Bea were friends, and they all loved
Estelle, he says. Susan Harris told
Rue, Thank God youre here to play
mediator. This show would never work
without you.
The actresses, though, were always
professional with each other, LaRue says.
On taping nights, they would wait until all
four were ready to go to the commissary.
A reunion in which their segments were
lmed separately was done because of
logistics, not animosity, LaRue says.
She used to say she was nothing like
Blanche, but that was such bullshit, LaRue
says of his pal. I mean come on, she had
six husbands she was like Blanche in a
lot of ways.
The ultimate, LaRue says, was watching
Golden Girls reruns with McClanahan,
who also had starring roles on Maude
and Mamas Family in addition to the 70
movies and 250 theatrical plays she was in
over her lifetime.
Wed sit there watching and shed
say, Listen to that, listen to that. It wasnt
about her performance. She was always
pointing out how brilliant the writing was.

Odorless, quiet and
eco-friendly, these arent
the cars you think they are
By JOE PHILLIPS
Noisy. Sooty. Stinky. Thats the decades-
old rap on diesels.
Its like that old Seinfeld rerun The
Smelly Car episode where Jerry and
Elaine go to dinner. When they get back
in the car, they realize the valet had B.O.
and no wants to ride in the car ever again.
Ditto for diesels of yesteryear, with their
belching black smoke.
But that wasnt my experience this summer.
Todays diesels are odorless, quiet and eco-friendly,
thanks to new technology and low-sulfur fuel.
In Europe, 50 percent of the cars have
diesel engines. Here, diesel sales were up
27 percent last year, and there are now more
than two dozen models available. These
cars are about 30 percent more fuel-efcient
than gas engines and the fact that diesels
really are clean seems to be sinking in.
My mind knew all the new arguments
for diesels. But could these cars actually
live up to the hype?
Mercedes S-Class 350 BlueTEC
$93,000
Mpg: 21 city/31 highway
Destination: Indiana/Michigan
Here was the checklist: A 10-hour ride to
the Midwest, two brief pit stops and enough
room for my partner and a pampered
Rhodesian Ridgeback to sprawl out. While
a pricey Mercedes should be a no-brainer
for a long trip, I remembered feeling range
anxiety earlier this spring when the battery
on a Nissan Leaf almost ran out. Would it be
hard to nd diesel stations along our rural
route? And had Mercedes followed other
automakers in adding a confusing array of
high-tech gizmos?
Not to worry, because the S-Class nav
system displayed all gas stations as well
as Zagat Survey ratings for restaurants,
hotels and golf courses. And while theres
a central command dial to control audio,
climate and other systems, Mercedes
included some old-school knobs as a
backup for quicker access. Theres no long-
wheelbase version as there are with other
high-end agships, but the cabin and trunk
were more than spacious. This BlueTEC
can go a whopping 700 miles on one tank
of fuel, which beats the competition, even
the S-Class Hybrid. Its also quieter, with
noise-reducing infrared-reecting glass.
The 16-way power seats come with
heating, cooling and massage functions.
And performance and handling were
superb, whether on highways or
navigating fruit orchards outside the gay-
haven of Saugatuck, Mich.
Audi Q7 TDI
$52,000
Mpg: 17 city/25 highway
Destination: Long Island, NY
Ask anyone in Manhattan, and theres
a narrow timeslot to beat beach trafc
to Fire Island or The Hamptons. Miss
it, as we did, and minutes turn into
hours with lots of honking and raised
middle ngers. Add in a thunderstorm
and, well, its time for yoga breathing
exercises.
Luckily, we were safely cocooned in
the Audi Q7, with its posh cabin and high
seating for prime visibility. Most important,
though, was the 225-hp turbodiesel. This
isnt the fastest seven-seat SUV, but it
quickly darted out of harms way thanks to
superb all-wheel drive and grippy 20-inch
wheels.
Optional air suspension offered
choice of a cushy or sporty ride, a
real plus on the bumpier back roads.
And the rearview camera and blind-
spot warning system came in handy.
So did the rear and side sunshades,
once the sun finally came out. While
cargo space isnt as big as some
competitors, its fine for a long-
weekend jaunt. And the 14-speaker
B&O surround-sound stereo was
perfect for hours of tunes, a saving
grace in any kind of traffic.

Creating a housing prole
can improve the home
buying process
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
Whatever you think of Mel Gibson, you
have to admit that the sight of him in a
bra and pantyhose while sporting lipstick
and mascara in the movie What Women
Want is enough to make Noxeemas
face cream, Chi Chis chi-chis heave and
Ms. Vida Boehme roll over in her grave.
The movie, of course, features the for-
mer Mad Max as Nick Marshall, a wom-
anizer who, after being electrocuted by a
hair dryer, can hear the private thoughts
of women, ultimately learning to use that
knowledge to become a kinder, gentler
business colleague and romantic partner.
Now, I cant say that I would enjoy
hearing what everyone is thinking about
me without the censorship that we call
tact, but it would sure help in my business
if I could hear what people were really
thinking about the homes I show them.
For example, two buyers and their
agent walk into a kitchen (no, this is not
a bad Siri joke).
Agent: So, how do you like this kitchen?
Buyer One: Its nice.
Buyer Two: Yeah, lots of counter space.
So which one is actually thinking, If I
see one more galley kitchen with maple
cabinets and Absolute Black granite Ill
go mad? And why is he too polite to
say it? Moreover, how is their agent sup-
posed to know to eliminate that style
from the properties she shows them in
the future, based solely on that conversa-
tion? Wouldnt it be easier if your agent
could just hear your thoughts?
Candor is very important during the
home buying process. I tell my clients
that just because I show them something
doesnt mean they have to like it, but when
I ask their opinion about a homes location,
layout or special feature, I want to hear the
word because in their response. The
words that come after because tell the
real story and help your agent focus on
whats most important to you.
No matter how long a couple has been
together, they will likely have different
opinions about the location, style, size,
price and features of a home, so if youre
a party of two thinking about purchasing
a home together, try this little exercise at
home before looking at properties.
Complete the outline below, indepen-
dently and without peeking at your part-
ners paper.
My new home must have
_______.
Limit this section to 5 items.
It would be great if my home
also had _______.
Keep this section at 5-10 items.
My dream home also features
________.
Go wild with desire here.
I dont even want to look at
a home that _______.
Insert only one item here and yes,
I know its tricky.
Now open a bottle of your favorite
beverage and share your lists. Youre
probably in for a surprise.
Discuss with your partner the reasons
why you selected the items you did, then
write down all the things you agree on
and give that list to your agent. Be pre-
pared to explain the because behind
your items, even if difcult to articulate,
so you and your agent can develop your
housing prole together.
Having a housing prole is equally im-
portant for single buyers. It can help your
agent nd suitable alternatives among
our limited housing stock or recommend
potential compromises that may not be
as drastic as you think.
For example, my prole looks like this:
My ideal home has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths,
tall ceilings, hardwoods and a replace with
the ame still burning. Small grassy areas
and extra storage are welcome; a dog-
friendly environment is a must.
It has a solid foundation, windows to
the soul and a panoramic view of life. Its
basement can be unnished but its eleva-
tor must go all the way to the top.
It need not be expensive but must not
be cheap. It should be well insulated and
free of hazardous substances and its exteri-
or should feature a liberal dose of sunshine.
No wait! Did I confuse my hous-
ing prole with my Match.com prole?
Sometimes that really is how it goes when
you fall in love with your new home.
