SISTER JOAN MAHONEY: STATEMENT BY BISHOP DECLAN LANG ON VIOLENCE IN SYRIA:

"Over the past sixteen months, the people of Syria - whether in Aleppo or in many other parts of this historical country - are suffering from the awful violence that is being inflicted upon them on a daily basis."My thoughts are with each and every one of them as they struggle with great courage and fortitude for their dignity and basic freedoms. I pray today that they will succeed in building up a society of equal citizens in which all Syrians of all backgrounds will enjoy a future marked with reconciliation and plurality and where they will rid themselves from all forms of sectarianism."Declan Lang Bishop of Clifton and Chairman of the International Affairs Dept of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.

October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Vatican II and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church."The 'door of faith' (Acts14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith.

Home Mission Sunday is the day in the Church's calendar when the Catholic community in England and Wales is invited to pray for, celebrate and support the work of evangelisation in England and Wales. It falls this year on 16 September and the theme is Confident in Faith. Home Mission Sunday 2012 is intimately connected to the opening of the Year of Faith which will commence just over three weeks after Home Mission Sunday on 11 October. The Rt Rev Kieran Conry, Chair of the Bishops' Conference Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis highlights the scriptural grounding to the day: "One of the purposes of the Year is to invite baptised Catholics to rediscover and be more confident in their faith. This is what St. Peter demonstrates so powerfully in the Gospel for Home Mission Sunday, proclaiming 'You are the Christ' Mark 8: 27-35. The more confidence we have in Jesus Christ as Our Lord and Saviour, the more ready and equipped we are to share the treasure of our Catholic Faith." st nd 50/50 CLUB WINNERS FOR AUGUST: 1 Prize Sheila Welsky (74), 2 Prize Roger Bodnarchuk rd (27), 3 Prize Paul Teer (47).
