Agriculture, Food & Rural Business Those at the BoP living in rural areas face challenges substantially different from those faced in an urban setting. Creating a livelihood for oneself is subject to weather, access to technology, and ones own health to farm the fields. The questions that our finalists are looking to solve through their innovations are: how do we support local farmers in an effective, and at the same time, an environmentally friendly way? How do we use technology to increase agricultural outputs to increase incomes? Is there a way to farm sustainably with an increasing population demanding more at faster rate? The following social enterprises are facing these challenges head on and aiming to create sustainable business from the ground up. Bhushan Agro aims to contribute towards rural transformation and 2nd Green revolution of India by improving yield/revenue of agricultural lands in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. The Company is involved in agriculture using modern scientific methods resulting in improved agricultural yield and productivity. There are plans to set up food processing units to produce value added items. The business model is to lease agricultural land from farmers at Rs. 8000-10,000 per acre per year and carry farming using modern scientific methods, equipment, systematic crop rotation, and water harvesting techniques. The projected result is an improved yield and 3 crops per year instead of the 2 currently possible in that region. The revenue from agricultural activities per acre per year is approximately Rs. 100,000 150,000. Driptech is a water technologies company operating from Silicon Valley, with offices in Pune and Beijing. Driptech produces affordable, high-quality irrigation systems designed for small-plot farmers.
