Activity 3: Columbus as an Author

Honestly, I see Christopher Columbus as mutual. He made rough estimations about the world he lived in and continued to believe them until he died. He indeed has some heroic features, but an even number of corrupt features as well. If I were to choose, I personally would decide he is a villain to other cultures. In Columbuss Journal it was stated that he and his crew merely appeared to be honest people, that doesnt mean they were honest people. He seems to use and enforce his power and stature. In his letter to the King and Queen of Spain he states I will say whatever occurs to me in reference to the colonization and commerce of the Island of Espanola, seeing that he says very little about how the citizens prior to his arrival are being treated, but he doesnt state what it is he is doing to them.

What might this tell us about the attitudes of Europeans on the eve of Columbus' voyage? o That he must sail in a specific direction in order to arrive on foreign soil.

Exploration 2: Sebastian Munster's 1504 Map

How accurate is Sebastian Munsters 1540 map, the first to show the Western Hemisphere? o Its accurate, but not precise. He roughly has the shape of the Western Hemisphere, but the measurements are slightly off, which could be troublesome when journeying to these lands.

Exploration 3: Abraham Ortelius's 1570 Map

Compare Abraham Ortelius's 1570 map to Munster's. o Orteliuss map is far more accurate than that of Munsters. With the only exception of Orteliuss map being Canada and a few other minor details it is very similar to that of a map of the world today.
