3 Theory for the teacher Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the newspaper, you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research. There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summaries and other organizers as they move down the page or screen. You might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations. Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This technique is useful when you're seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension. Skimming works well to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts. Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it. When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.

4 Articles to skim and scan Helper or exploiter to IIIrd World Recently, if you go to a shop to buy your child a new soccer ball, there is a good possibility that the ball has been made by someone your child's age or even younger. About half of the world's soccer balls are made in Pakistan, and each one of them passes through a process of production where child labor is involved. This problem not only pertains to Pakistan but is worldwide. More than 200 children, some as young as 4 and 5 years of age, are involved in the production line. Majority of these children work in Asia, e.g in the nations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Nike is characterized of making its equipments in countries which are in the developing phase, having very cheap labor, authoritarian government and lack of human rights appeal and union movement. In doing this it has made greater margins on the cost of mere cents to its workers. So Nike success story is not based on good name and advertising alone but also attached to it is the tears of tortured workers and child labor. A columnist 'Stephen Chapman' from Libertarian newspaper argues that "But why is it unconscionable for a poor country to allow child labor? Pakistan has a per-capita income of $1,900 per year - meaning that the typical person subsists on barely $5 per day. Is it a revelation - or a crime - that some parents willingly send their children off to work in a factory to survive? Is it cruel for Nike to give them the chance?" (source: http://www.raincity.com/~williamf/words96.html) Stephen argues that the best way to end child-labor is to buy more of the products that children produce. This would increase their demand, and as they will produce more, they will earn more, hence giving themselves chances to rise above poverty level and thus also benefiting the families of the children and as well as the nation. However, the issue is not that simple. Increasing the demand of the products produced by child labor means encouraging more child labor, encouraging more birth rates, more slavery, increasing sweatshops and discouraging education - as parents of the children working in factories would want them to work more and earn more. If this happened to be the case, then more and more children will be bought and sold on the black market, leading no end to this problem. By encouraging more child labor, you are not only taking away those innocent years from them but also the right to be educated and the right to be free.

Brutality, poor wages and 15-hour days in the Asian sweatshops

Share Jason Burke, chief reporter The Observer, Sunday 19 November 2000 Article history

They are the ultimate status symbols for sports stars and street-conscious young people. With their trademark three stripes, Adidas clothes cost a small fortune to buy and are promoted by world-famous names such as England skipper David Beckham, Olympic heptathlete Denise Lewis and Russian tennis player Anna Kournikova. But the company will this week become embroiled in controversy when the European Parliament hears of the barbaric treatment of employees in Indonesian sweatshop factories supplying the German conglomerate.

M Antnia Ferragut Segu, Anna Jrner

5 The Parliament will be told that clothes for Adidas were made in two factories using child labour, forced overtime and sexual harassment. Representatives of workers in two Indonesian factories supplying the German company, will tell Euro MPs that in the Nikomax Gemilang and Tuntex factories, in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, children as young as 15 were: made to work 15-hour days; expected to do at least 70 hours a week and punished for refusing to do overtime; paid less than $60 a month, rates below the International Labour Organisation's demand for a living wage; penalised for taking leave during medical difficulties and had illegal deductions taken from wages as punishments for minor misdemeanours. Sports goods companies have been criticised for exploiting workers in the developing world before. There was a storm just before the 1998 World Cup, after footballs bearing the Manchester United club crest were being made by child labourers in India, working for as little as 6p an hour. Cricket ball manufacturers were also criticised.

Activities 1. Scan both texts and name the two brands of sportswear that appear in the article. 2. Skim the articles. What problems do they tell us about? 3. Skim again. Do you find the article interesting?

WEB QUEST
Use a search engine (e.g. Google) to find the following information. Which is the official sponsor of the Olympic Games in London 2012? What is a sweatshop? In which countries are there factories and sweatshops that produce Nike and Adidas

products? In which countries are the headquarters of Nike and Adidas situated?

M Antnia Ferragut Segu, Anna Jrner

7 HOW TO CREATE A PERSONALIZED GOOGLE-MAP. Go to i-google, enter e-mail and password. Click on maps.

Click on my places and then on Nike and Adidas on the Map.

Now enter the address or part of the address in the search field. Useful tips: if you dont find the factory when you enter the whole address, enter the name of the factory and the town and the country. If you still cant find the factory search only for the town and put the balloon there, if you do this you should add this is not the exact location of the factory in the information square.

M Antnia Ferragut Segu, Anna Jrner

8 When you have found the factory or sweatshop, click on the balloon and click on Save to map and choose Nike and Adidas on the Map. Next click on done and then on my places. Now you can find your balloon on the map and in the column to the left.

Find it in the column to the left and click on it. Now you can change the colour of the balloon. You should also check that the name of the factory, and not the whole address, appears as title. When you have finished, click on ok.

CONGRATULATIONS, now you have added a balloon to our map!!! But to see it correctly you have to refresh the page or go out of it and back in again. You can click on any of the other options in the menu on the top. And then go back to maps. Now you will also see what your classmates have added to the map.

PUNCTUATION
Remember that we use full stop (among other uses): At the end of a sentence. After an abbreviation (Mr.). After an initial (Miss A. Jarner).

Remember that we use commas (among other uses): To mark a little pause within a sentence. Between adjectives (a dangerous, exhausting job) .

DONT use a comma between the subject and its verb nor between the verb and its object.

ACTIVITY 1: Both commas and full stops have been removed from the first paragraph of this text. Can you add them? (Add 3 full stops and 3 commas.)

A sweatshop worker tells her story

March 26 2008 Arifa is a garment worker in Bangladesh she sews clothes primarily for Wal-Mart but her factory takes contracts from other brands as well Arifa is a member of the National Garment Workers Federation a Bangladeshi union ACTIVITY 2: In the second paragraph there are too many commas. Can you find those that shouldnt be there? (Remove 3 commas.) Arifa started working in Bangladesh's garment factories, when she was 10 years old. She grew up, in a town outside the capital city, Dhaka, and had to find a job when her father could no longer work. She has worked, in the sector for 20 years. ACTIVITY 3: In the third paragraph 2 commas have been used in the place of a full stop. Can you correct it? When she first started working, Arifa was a helper and earned only 100 taka a month, she has gradually worked her way up to sewing machine operator, she now earns 2200 taka a month, working an average of 13-14 hours per day. After 20 years as a garment worker Arifa earns more than Bangladesh's minimum wage, but still less than a living wage.

30 EXTRA MATERIAL 2 GROUP B. Watch the video and read the text. In their webpage Adidas claims to be a sustainable company, one that recognises its responsibilities towards the environment, our employees and the people who make our products. For that reason and also because the bad conditions of workers can harm their image, they have tried to improve the conditions in some of the factories. Now we will read a text about PT Dada, a factory in Jakarta, an example of all these changes. Until Jakarta and other cities in developing countries became industrial towns, people had very few options for a job. At PT Dada and in other Adidas factories in the area the minimum wage (around 72 dollars a month) is better than what a worker could find elsewhere. However, it is still a very low salary, especially taking into account the difficult working conditions there. As factory conditions are closely watched at an international level, the management in PT Dada has started to make important changes: medical facilities have been improved, safety warnings have been posted, temperatures are constantly monitored within the factory, clean chilled drinking water is readily available, etc. One of the workers explains Before the changes workers sometimes fainted for poor ventilation and long hours. Now the conditions are better. Management now conducts training once a week, to discuss many things as well as to understand the needs of the workers. We did not have this in the past. Adidas knew that there were communication problems between management and workers that were having an effect on productivity. So they turned to the International Labour Organisation, the ILO, to train the two groups to work together. The results have been dramatic. Demonstrations have been replaced by dialogue, confrontation by negotiation and trust. PT Dada has become a model in labour management relations for the rest of factories in the region. This shows that when international brands engage in open dialogue with local suppliers, the road to globalisation can lead to improved economic prospects for everyone concerned. Now answer the following activities. 1. Arguments in paragraph 1 that can be useful in your persuasive letter.

2. List some of the changes that have taken place in the factory.

3. What do the management and the workers do once a week?

4. Name three key words to improvement in labour relations.
