Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe These are the three expectations for students and staff who learn and teach in our school environment. We expect students and adults to be respectful to one another at all times; to be responsible for their learning and actions; and to work to create a safe school environment. Our district uses the principles of the Olweus Bullying Prevention program to help support students in learning how to treat others with respect and develop into caring friends and peers. Parents as Partners We encourage families to become active participants in their childrens learning experiences. There are many ways for families to be involved in our school. We welcome parent volunteers and lunch and recess visitors. You will receive information about volunteering at the start of the school year. We have a strong Parent-Teacher Organization here at Brecknock Elementary School, and YOU are invited to be a part of it! We are thankful for the support of this group. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, at 7 PM in our library. For more information on how to be involved, visit our Parents as Partners page on our school blog.

ALL ABOUT LEARNING

The Eastern Lancaster County School District offers a rich curricula in literacy, mathematics, and social sciences.
LITERACY Our literacy curriculum was developed based on the PA Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. Primary students focus on early literacy skills such as letter and sound identification, concepts of print, and speaking and listening. Intermediate students delve deep into learning about how to read, respond, and understand informational text and literature. The writing process is infused into the literacy program in all grades. We use the Reading Street program to support literacy learning in grades K-6. MATHEMATICS Our math curriculum was developed based on the PA Common Core Standards for Mathematics. We use the program Everyday Math to support students in learning foundational skills in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. These elements support a students ability to learn and apply more demanding math concepts and procedures. SOCIAL SCIENCES Students in grades K-6 are engaged in rich, hands-on learning experiences in the areas of science, covering units in life science, earth and space science, and science processes. Social studies units address civics and government, geography, and history of our community, state, country, and world.

Brecknock Elementary School is one of three K-6 schools in the Eastern Lancaster County School District. Our school is comprised of approximately 480 students and 70 teachers and staff members, located in a beautiful rural location and supported by a strong foundation of parents and community. We provide educational opportunities for a diverse population of learners, including life skills and autistic support students, as well as English language learners. Our classrooms are inviting, with caring teachers who greet and guide children every day. Teachers design a variety of opportunities for student engagement in the classroom. Students enjoy special area subjects such as art, library/ media, music, and physical education. Our students and staff are fortunate to have access to a number of technologies that enhance and support their learning. Students also assume various leadership roles in our school.
