ND early Canada goose season opening Wednesday

BISMARCK (AP) North Dakotas early Canada goose hunting season opens Wednesday . The early season is aimed at reducing local numbers of Canada geese. The state Game and Fish Department says the statewide population of the geese remains high despite liberalized regulations the past several years including larger bag limits and expanded shooting hours. Limits for this years early season are 15 birds daily and 30 in possession. Shooting hours are half an hour before sunrise until sunset. The season ends in the Missouri River zone on Sept. 7. It closes in the rest of the state on Sept. 15.

Fister pitches 8 strong innings for Tigers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Miguel Cabrera became the first player to reach 100 RBIs this season with a run-scoring single and Doug Fister pitched eight strong innings for the Detroit Tigers in an 8-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Fister (7-7) did not allow an earned run and struck out seven to win for the third time in four starts. The Tigers overcame a bad defensive inning to end a three-game slide. Detroit remains two games back of Chicago in the AL Central. Josh Willingham hit his career-high 30th home run for Minnesota. Tied at 4 in the sixth inning, Andy Dirks hit a solo home run off Brian Duensing (2-8) to put the Tigers ahead for good. Miguel Cabrera got his 100th RBI with a seventhinning single off Casey Fien, becoming the third player in Tigers history to collect at least 100 RBIs in five or more consecutive seasons. Harry Heilmann did it in seven straight seasons (192329) and Charlie Gehringer did so in five straight (193236). Cabrera added an RBI double in the ninth. In seven starts since the All-Star break, Fister is 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA and 48 strikeouts. Last year, Fister was 8-1 down the stretch for the Tigers after being acquired in a trade with Seattle. Other than an inning where two errors led to all of Minnesotas runs, Fister retired 21 of 26, including Joe Mauer and Willingham to start the eighth before Justin Morneau doubled to center. Ryan Doumit grounded out to end the threat. Duensing had two bad innings and he continues to struggle since joining the Minnesota rotation June 23. He allowed five runs in six innings, striking out four. Hes now 1-6 with a 6.34 ERA in eight starts overall this season. Hes allowed 16 runs 11 earned and 29 hits in 19 innings while going 0-2 in three starts this month. The Tigers offense gave Fister plenty of early support. Jhonny Peralta had a tworun single in the first. Gerald Laird had an RBI triple in the second and scored on an RBI double by Austin Jackson to make it 4-0. But the Tigers were sloppy on defense in the third inning with two errors leading to four unearned runs. Omar Infante began the inning by misplaying a grounder by Jamey Carroll. One out and three batters later, Darin Mastroianni hit a grounder to Infante, who was unable tag Ben Revere running to second base he singled. Infantes throw to first would have gotten Mastroianni, but Prince Fielder pulled his foot off the bag. Fielder then threw wildly to second trying to force Revere, allowing Carroll to score.

ND salmon anglers asked to turn over fish heads

BISMARCK (AP) The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is asking salmon anglers to turn over fish heads to the agency so that tracking information can be retrieved from microscopic tags embedded in the fishs snouts. The agency says anglers can tell whether a fish has a coded tag by looking on its back. If its missing the small adipose fin in front of the tail, the fish has a tag. The agency says some young salmon were tagged before being stocked in Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River. Salmon cant reproduce naturally in Lake Sakakawea, so eggs are brought to the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and fish are raised there for stocking.

Van Diest will remain Carroll football coach

HELENA, Mont. (AP) Carroll College athletic director Bruce Parker says Mike Van Diest will remain as head coach of the football team. The school says Van Diest talked to his team Monday to reassure his commitment to the student-athletes and the program. Parker had told the Independent Record that Van Diest indicated to upperclassmen on Sunday that he was thinking about stepping away from his head coaching position. Its not clear why he indicated that. Van Diest wasnt available for comment Monday . A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday .

As the weather gets colder, and the kids get back to school, sports fans get excited for another reason, the

start of football season. As the college football season begins, Williston will have a representative in one of the BCS conferences. Williston High School standout Brent Qvale is entering his junior season at the University of Nebraska, competing for a starting spot on the Cornhuskers offensive line. I cant really comment on the depth chart because of coachs rule, Qvale said. I should be up there. Also working in Qvales favor is the fact that Tyler Moore, the expected starter at left tackle, has failed to

show up for camp, according to the Associated Press. An AP story says that Moore left the Huskers to deal with personal issues. Qvale was a star at Williston High, being named Gatorade North Dakota Player of the Year in 2008. He received all-state honors in both football and basketball. He was also a star academically, holding a 4.0 grade-point average. By committing to the Huskers, Qvale became the first player from North Dakota since 1994 to be on scholarship from Nebraska. Entering the 2012 season

Qvale has been named to the conference All-academic teams every year, but has been on the fringes as far as getting on the field, playing as a backup guard and on special teams. He has also struggled with injuries, having the red shirt his first year at Nebraska due to shoulder problems With two starters from last season having graduated, Qvale has a chance to get some more time on the field. The Huskers are ranked 16th in the USA Today preseason poll, But expecta-

NHlPA makes 1st proposal to owners

TORONTO (AP) The National Hockey League Players Association has made its first proposal in the latest round of collective bargaining talks with the NHL. The union said its proposal to the league includes a smaller percentage of revenues for players and an expanded revenue sharing program. Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players Association, said the proposal could stabilize the industry . Fehr said players are set to surrender as much as $465 million in revenue under the proposal if the league continues to grow at an average rate. He says that number could balloon to $800 million if the league grows at the same rate it has over the last two seasons. We do believe that the proposal the players made today, once implemented, can produce a stable industry ... that can give us a chance to move beyond the recurring labor strife that has plagued the NHL the last two decades, Fehr said. Fehr has said the players are willing to work past Sept. 15 if an agreement hasnt been signed, as long as one is on the horizon. Bettman has already said the NHL is prepared to lock out its players if no deal is reached. Negotiations have been under way for seven weeks. The regular season is slated to begin on Oct. 11. Fehr said the proposal, should lead to a new CBA. Players did not believe the owners initial proposal was appropriate, he said. Both sides said negotiations are constructive. In essence, when you boil it all down, what were suggesting is that the players partner with the financially stronger owners to stabilize the industry, Fehr said, and assist the less financially strong ownership groups. The NHL has had two seasons disrupted by labor disputes. In addition to the cancellation of the 2004-05 season, almost half of the 1994-95 season was wiped out by a labor dispute.
