Music Video Director

In this coursework I would have to create a professional looking music video, I felt it would be a good idea to research into a music director of my chosen music genre to give me a feel of their influences and style. Starting my research I looked up the music director of one of my analysed videos, The Power by Dj Fresh and Dizzee Rascal, I picked this song because this is the style I felt I would want to base my music video on. Rohan Blair-Mangat is the director for this music video. Looking at his previous work he has also done these music videos: -Misha B Home Run -Rita Ora Hot Right Now -Cocaine Unwrapped Run For Your Life He has also worked with Adidas, Herve, and Trailer Park, he is also known to be working with Conor Maynard. He also directs lots of small promotional videos. Looking through all his previous work, they all seem to have similar features such as athletic sport, dance and urban theme. Also all of the videos he has directed uses lots of positive colours and similar mise en scene which means his videos are very targeted at a specific audience. For example in all his videos there are lots of graffiti streets, use of council areas, bright warm colours, use of sharp lighting. These all denote lower class and usually connoted as bad and grimy. However Mangat portrays these areas as positive by creating a happy atmosphere with a community enjoying each others company with a common interest such as sport or dance or even bubbles. This could mean that he is trying to show audiences that lower class areas should not be stereotyped into being places of antisocial behaviour and crime. He is a Young London based director and he graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in fine art, after he began to shoot promos for his friends such as Goldielocks, Kano and Gorrilaz sound system where he found his interest and passion. He is now represented by stink. He has continued to develop his style

shooting promos at music and art events across London whilst looking to document intimate moments and to capture and convey energy and emotion. while his work with DJ Fresh gave the producer his most successful music video to date, garnering over 21 million views on YouTube alone. Since then, Rohan has again worked with DJ Fresh, becoming a favourite over at Ministry of Sound and EMI, for his work with Conor Maynard. Overall I believe that Rohan Blair-Mangat is successful being a young director and working with such established and known names. His creativity and style reflects in his work and I believe that it has impacted on the way audiences see certain areas and beliefs as he channels emotion and energy through his videos.
