BUENA VISTA WINERY Open Daily from 10 am to 5 pm 18000 Old Winery Road Sonoma, CA 95476 1-800-926-1266 www.buenavistawinery.com
In 2011, Buena Vista Winery, the oldest premium winery in California, became a part of Boisset Family Estates, a well-renowned and charismatic family with a collection of historic wineries in Italy, California and Canada with roots in Burgundy, France. The family, led in the United States by Jean-Charles Boisset, possesses a true love and respect for Buena Vista and its unrivaled heritage, authentic roots, colorful history and of course, great wines. Boisset is passionately committed to his partnership with the Count, to carry on the vision and legacy that the winerys founder, Agoston Haraszthy, the self-proclaimed Count of Buena Vista, first created on the property almost 160 years ago. To that end, restoration of of the original and historic Champagne Cellar began shortly after Jean-Charles took over as owner. The entire restoration project is a two- to three-year process with the first phase nearing completion this month, and it wont be long before wine will once again be made in the cellars. Starting September 1st, , the historic Champagne Cellars will host guided cave tours and barrel tasting, as was done 20 years agao before the building was closed to the public. . The by reservation tours and tastings will take place seven days per week during September and October and Friday through Sunday during the off season. You can see pick ax marks on the cave walls left by the original Chinese workers back in the 1860s, says Tom Blackwood, director of retail operations for Buena Vista Winery We didntont want to lose that, as we felt it was essential to maintain the original look and feel of how it was in the 1860s and how it looks now in 2012. It is exciting to be back into the caves where it all began. Buena Vista suffered earthquake damage to the Cellar Building in 1906 and again in 1989. I never thought I would see the Champagne Cellars restored and used again, said Tom Blackwood, But the Boisset family is committed to returning the property to its former glory. Structural strengthening has taken place on the Champagne Cellars and repointing, a process of re-grouting the outer layer of mortar that exists around the stonework of the winery buildings has been completed. A unique mortar was created following numerous test mixes to ensure that it is compatible with the soft characteristics of the original stone as well as match the original historic stones. No detail in the renovations is being overlooked. And, while all the construction will continue into 2013 it is still business as usual at Buena

A Napa Valley Hidden Gem
When Napa Valley is bustling and its time for a break, drop by Arger-Martucci Vineyards where you can enjoy award-winning wines in a relaxing and unpretentious setting. Located just south of St. Helena, the winery is quaint and picturesque. The tasting rooms poolside picnic area, complete with an outdoor gazebo, boasts a beautiful view of the Mayacamas Mountains and offers guests the ideal atmosphere to taste exceptional wines away from the crowds. Arger-Martucci is a boutique, family-owned winery that is more than a business venture between two owners it is a love and appreciation of making great wine that is shared by two families one Greek, the other of Italian descent. Owners Kosta Arger and Rich Martucci first met and became close friends through a Reno, NV wine tasting group in the 80s. At the time, Arger was establishing himself as an accomplished cardiologist and skilled home winemaker, while Martucci was working to build the struggling bank he had acquired. Dr. Arger, who learned to make wine in the 70s from the legendary Joe Heitz of Heitz Cellars, had always dreamed of starting a Napa Valley winery. In 1998, both families were looking for property in the Napa Valley and decided it was the perfect time to partner and start a winery. The Arger-Martucci partnership is ideal Rich manages the financial aspects of the business, while Kosta handles the winemaking. Still a practicing cardiologist in Reno, Dr. Arger spends his weekends, holidays and the harvest in Napa Valley. The winery is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and its estate reserve, Bordeaux-style blend, the Odyssey. They produce a handful of other delicious reds, along with an elegant white blend called the Iliad. Other varietals produced include Cabernet Franc, Petite Syrah and Dulcinea (dessert wine). All red wines, with the exception of the Petite Syrah, are estate grown on their mountainside Odyssey Vineyards, which are located 1,400 feet above the Napa Valley floor on Atlas Peak. The next generation is also involved in the winery full time. Anthony Arger handles the outside sales and marketing duties, while Vince Martucci is the assistant winemaker and oversees the tasting room. Stop by and enjoy this wonderful Napa Valley secret.

Cheers to Bubbles, Great Times and the Valleys Best View
BY JOSH STEIN
A photographic journey of spiritual discovery: by photographer/artist Janis Miglavs Runs through October 14, 2012
MUMM NAPA Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Last seating at 4:45 p.m. 8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford, CA 94573 1-800-MUM-NAPA | mummnapa.com
The Mumm Napa story started with a quest for great New World sparkling wine production. G.H. Mumm, a renowned French Champagnerie, was one of the first of the Old World houses to realize the United States had locations where sun, soil and rain could combine to create spots ready for their style of winegrowing, and Guy Devaux, with more than forty years of sparkling and still wine production experience, was given the task of finding the location worthy of the Mumm name. Monsieur Devaux finally found what he was looking for in the Napa Valley after a four-year search, and in 1986, Mumm Napa was completed along the Silverado Trail in the heart of the Rutherford District. The winery was built to allow for wines produced according to methode traditionelle, which includes hand-pruning and care of the vines, careful hand-harvesting and in-bottle fermentation so each wine has aged on the yeast, the key to great sparklng wines. Although Guy Devaux passed away in 1995, his spirit lives on in the winerys top bottlings, DVX and Devaux Ranch, as well as in the continuation of traditional production processes under Winemaker Ludivic Dervin. The winery has been certified by the Napa Green Winery and Green Land programs, displaying the attention paid to Devauxs legacy. Equally, they work with growers to produce fruit from Carneros and along the Napa River north towards Yountville, aiming for lush and concentrated flavors combined with crisp acidity. Mumm Napa is, in fact, the remaining large sparkling house to source their grapes exclusively from the Napa Valley, continuing Guy Devauxs belief that Napa is the perfect place for New World bubbles. Mumm Napa is well known for its Brut, Rose, Cuvee M, Deveux Ranch, and Blanc

de Blancs bottlings, which display the range of traditional sparkling styles, as well as its top release, DVX, but its only at the winery that you can gain access to older library bottles of DVX in addition to special releases of the Santana Brut, DVX Ros, Sparkling Pinot Noir, and Demi-Sec, a dessert sparkler; the winery also makes available still bottlings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as large- and small-format bottles of their sparkling wines for those everyday or special occasions in need of pizzazz. Of course, if Mumm Napa were only about its wines, it wouldnt be the world-renowned wine country experience it is, and the real secret is to go at locals time, which is actually in the mornings before the heat and crowds, when palates are at their sharpest and the Valleys best views are in crystal-clear light. Why wouldnt you want to start the day with some bubbles, as everyone says? Once you walk down the breezeway and are greeted by a staff member, everything else is taken care of for you except for deciding which of several different tours and tasting experiences you wish to enjoy. Smaller groups can taste without reservations on the outside patio or in the glass-enclosed tasting salon. Each gives access to staff who really care about your visit and presents views not to be missed. Even more special is the reservations-required Oak Terrace Tasting, which pairs library wines with fruit and cheese, if you choose, with leisurely relaxation on the terrace built around an 180-year-old blue oak, protection of which, in keeping with the Devaux spirit, delayed construction more than nine months in ensuring no damage to the tree during the build. The resulting line of sight over the Valley is magnificent. The winery is quite well known for its Fine Art Photography Gallery; the Private Collection Gallery houses twenty-seven Ansel Adams original signed prints on loan from grandson Matthew Adams, and the Gallery also rotates exhibitions, Ancient Myths and Vineyard Light shows off photographer Janis Miglavss color photographs and illustrations of Africas undiscovered myths and stunning vineyard shots. Sparkling wines and fine art: what could pair better? Clearly, at year twenty-six, Mumm Napa and its staff can be quite proud. Not only have they carried on the discerning eye and demand for highest quality of Guy Devaux, they have continued to push for even greater hospitality and enjoyment of the Valleys bounty. Monsieur Devaux got it absolutely right. Come see and taste for yourself why the quest finally ended when he looked out upon the Valley from the Silverado Trail and knew he had found the place for sparkling wine in Napa. Enjoy!

Vineyards is back by popular demand. Its no wonder that she was named most outstanding female leader, innovator and visionary in the wine field in the North Bay by North Bay Business Journal. Vintners Holidays 2012 also features two Master Sommeliers as event moderators. Not too shabby when you consider there are only 129 masters in the entire world. For example, session three (November 11-13) will be hosted by Evan Goldstein. This Master Sommelier penned the famous wine book Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommeliers Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food. This novel is noted for its easy-reading tone, its usefulness for all skill levels, and its transcendental ability to make fine wine and expert pairing concepts more accessible to the beginning wine-curious consumer. Sessions five and six (November 25-27, November 28-29) will be moderated by Gilles de Chambure, another of the countrys few
Master Sommeliers. Gilles will be on hand to spark lively chats among the attending winemakers and to host proceedings with his worldly and nearly unrivaled knowledge of wine. The final two sessions (December 2-4, December 5-6) feature Dan Berger as moderator. Dan is widely regarded as one of the best wine writers in the business and has authored two books: Beyond the Grapes: An Inside Look at Napa Valley and Beyond the Grapes: An Inside Look at Sonoma County. In all, the Vintners Holidays experience is a lavish yet tasteful adventure. Youll get closer to people that share similar passions. Youll get closer to the finest wines that North America can produce. Plus, youll get closer to a wilderness that enchants the imaginations of all who visit. For more information on Vintners Holidays and a valley of autumn escapes, call (801) 559-4859 or visit YosemitePark.com/Vintners.

As you travel St. Helena Highway visiting wineries, I highly recommend you experience Whitehall Lane Winery and Vineyards, a contemporary world-class operation surrounded by prime Napa Valley vineyards in the heart of St. Helena. At Whitehall Lane Winery, you will appreciate its unique beauty, overlooking the western hills while tasting award- winning wines and learning progressive winemaking techniques first hand. Whitehall Lane Winery was founded in 1979, and was purchased by the Leonardini Family 1993. Since then, they have updated the winemaking process, instituting a new barrel-aging program and continue to nurture and invest in their estate vineyards. The Leonardini Family owns approximately 125 acres of prime, valleyfloor vineyards, located in the Rutherford, St. Helena and Oak Knoll districts. The tasting room holds a simple, trendy and open atmosphere, welcoming a casual wine tasting affair. The walls showcase black and white photography of the Napa wine region, while showcasing several engaging winery, club events and vineyard videos on a large screen tv, as well as select, Whitehall branded retail products. A friendly and knowledgeable staff serve over a dozen varietal wines ranging in price from $18, such as the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley to the $115 Library Reserve 2004 Leonardini Cabernet Sauvignon. Whitehall Lane Winerys flagship 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon over delivers at $40 a bottle. This attractive wine is loaded with floral and bright fruit qualities, nicely balanced with great length on the finish. The Chronicle recently selected the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, as a delicious summer afternoon white wine, known for its cold, crisp and fruity flavors. The Leonardini family, winemaker Dean Sylvester and staff pride themselves on offering their customers elegant wines for the best value in Napa Valley. General Manager, Mike McLoughlin says, The Napa Valley offers many expensive wines, however, for great tasting wines and value, you shouldnt miss visiting our tasting room. For group tastings and wine club members, one can enjoy a more intimate experience in the private upstairs V.I.P Club Room . overlooking panaromic vineyard views Westside hills, to a beautiful private garden and barrel cellar. Whitehall Lanes philosophy is clearly stated on the wall and promises consistency and dedication in their vineyards and in every glass of wine! Whitehall Lane is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering a Current Release Menu tasting for $15 per person, which includes four wines to sample. Winery tours are offered of their vineyard patio, fermentation cellars, crush pad, barrel room and wine library. Winery-only reserve tastings are also available by appointment.

The winery also invites visitors to picnic in their sukkah, the traditional temporary hut constructed for the holiday, during the holiday, which falls between October 1st and 8th this year. What do you do if youve fallen in love with the Napa Valley and want to keep the flavor of the world-class wines and the feel of the vast vineyards fresh in your mind? Visit The Thomas Kinkade of Napa Valley Gallery and take a piece of Napa Valley home. The gallery is the exclusive Napa Valley gallery for the fine art of June Carey. Junes art depicts the beautiful landscapes of the Napa Valley area and its wineries. June Carey began painting full time in 1982. On a late summer afternoon escape, traveling to the Mendocino coast, she discovered the California wine country. I spend my most inspiring times running after the perfect light with my camera, in California and Italy, climbing fences, trees, being chased by dogs and field workers, and getting lost. Her passion springs forth through the beauty of the fertile earth. The Thomas Kinkade of Napa Valley Gallery is a privately owned and operated Fine Art Gallery. Owners Michael and Kimberly Perata have been avid fine art collectors for over a decade. We specialize in finding sold-out and hard to find images at no cost to the collector, says Kimberly. Carrol Cox, Executive Gallery Director has specialized in Thomas Kinkade art work for more than 17 years. This gallery is the destination among the vineyards. Its located in the heart of the hip and happening, historical downtown Napa, right in the middle of world renowned restaurants and wine tasting bars. Not only will you find the perfect Thomas Kinkade or June Carey image for you and your family, but you will be treated like family. The gallery is warm and homey, so its easy to picture one of the beautiful works of art on their walls, hanging in your own home. The Thomas Kinkade Gallery of Napa Valley also carries the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss rare and sold-out editions from his various collections.

Other venues also have music, and many people like to stroll downtown and see what catches their ear. Gracianna Winery Opens Tasting Room Doors, Unveils Worlds First Vineyard That Wears Jewels
Gracianna Winery has opened its long-anticipated tasting room on the lauded Miracle Mile on Westside Road in Healdsburg. It is one more facet of the Amador familys dream to share warmth, graciousness, gratitude and its award-winning wines with Sonoma County. It offers some one-of-a-kind features found in no other winery in the world. One highlight of the tasting room is its Mercedes Riverblock vineyard, where the vines wear medallions featuring the names of the Amador family and friends and Medallion Wine Club members. The Medallion program will be part of the offerings of the Gracianna wine club, which also launched with the opening of the tasting room. Another interesting feature is the entrance to the tasting room, punctuated by a larger than life sculpture of the trademark gift logo. This will be a landmark for visitors to spot the tasting room at 6914 Westside Road. The intimate, welcoming and uniquely decorated tasting room complements what Gracianna stands for wines for those who have something to be grateful for. By opening our new by-appointment tasting room, our family can realize our long-held dream of being able to host customers, fans, friends, family and members of the local wine community, says Ashley Amador, partner. Visitors are able to taste an award-winning lineup of wines, dating back to 2008, as well as learn first hand about the history behind the Amador family and their Basque matriarch Gracianna Lasaga (for whom the brand was named) how their roots helped plant the seeds for the success that modern day descendants have enjoyed in making brilliant, fruit-forward wines for the world to enjoy. Graciannas winemaker is 27-year-old Trini Amador IV, one of nations the youngest up-and-coming winemakers. The business is run by Trinis sister, Ashley, and their parents, Trini III and Lisa, are also involved in the winery. Ashley says, People always ask, What does the gift on the label mean? It represents the gift of giving and being thankful for the gifts we are given. We are thankful for our friends and our fans they have helped us achieve our success and are always rooting for our future.

Got a hankering for Zinfandel? Well then you best zip on by Alderbrook Winery, down on the southern edge of Dry Creek Valley. Alderbrook is something of nirvana for Zinfanatics who want as many different Zins as there are days in the week. Alderbrook offers six different Zinfandels, each with its own personality. Add to that a snazzy Zin-based blend called Zinfluence, and for dessert, a Zin Port, and youre set for a whole week of Zin happiness. Alderbrook also produces one of Sonoma Countys finest Carignane, a Spanish varietal often used in California as a blending grape. The Alderbrook Carignane is dark, firm and bold. Ask anyone in Dry Creek whos got the best Carignane, and theyll say Alderbrook. Better yet? Its a steal at $22. In 2002, the Terlato family purchased a majority interest in Alderbrook, adding it to their portfolio of small Napa and Sonoma wineries that includes Chimney Rock, Rutherford Hill and Sanford Winery in Santa Barbara County. The Terlatos also have their own wines featured under the Terlato Family Vineyards label. At Alderbrook, visitors will find the Terlato Familys Russian River Valley Pinot Grigio, a crisp, light wine made in the traditional Italian style that is the perfect foil for oysters, a chilled calamari salad or anything from the sea. You can also try the Terlatos Dry Creek Syrah, a dark, bold wine showing many layers of flavors, is a nice match for anything off the end-of-summer barbecue, red meats or even medium to strong cheeses. Alderbrook has a fantastic porch out front where you can enjoy a picnic and a bottle of one of Alderbrooks Zins. If you dont want to lug around your own picnic all morning, check out the tasting rooms supply of lunch munchies: prosciutto and other deli meats, a selection of cheeses and crackers, and an assortment of dips. After your picnic, dont miss the fabulous array of housewares and wine country gifts to take home as mementos of your wine country vacation. Now Alderbrook also offers a daily tour at 11 a.m. This exciting and educational tour takes visitors through the process of creating fine wine, including a brief explanation of growing premium grapes and a look inside a boutique winery at the wine production process. The tour is $15 per person, complimentary for wine club members (up to four people).

LOST CANYON WINERY Open friday through Sunday 10 am to 4 pm 123 4th Street in downtown Santa Rosa, CA 95401 (707) 623-9621 | www.lostcanyonwinery.com On facebook and Twitter!
Lost Canyon Winery is the newest, ultra-premium winery to open in historic Railroad Square in downtown Santa Rosa. Sharing a translucent wall with Station 1870 Wine Bar, Lost Canyon Winerys Tasting Room boasts a stunning collection of small-lot, single-vineyard wines from the cool Russian River Valley. Lost Canyons wine portfolio focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a spectacular cool-climate Syrah. And, just how small is small lot? The largest batch of wine produced by Lost Canyon is less than 700 cases. The Lost Canyon label was originally started in Oakland in 1979 but was recently purchased by Clay Fritz, son to the Fritz Cellars wine legacy and owner of Station 1870 Wine Bar. Clay sought to diversify the Fritz Cellars portfolio with the purchase and immediately branched out to select only the finest, boutique vineyards for his new artisan label. Today, Lost Canyon wines are sourced from Russian River vineyards that include famed Saralee Vineyard, Ruxton Vineyards and Morelli Lane with the largest block of grapes being approximately five acres. When you visit as you must! be sure to try the 2010 Ruxton Vineyard Chardonnay. This stellar white wine has real zing and is a full-bodied wine with big notes of citrus, white flowers and a long mineral-driven finish. Fermented 60% in new French oak barrels, this Chardonnay truly lets the terroir of the Ruxton Vineyard shine through. Caution, this is not a Chardonnay for you butter-lovers but rather a fantastically food-friendly wine that will pair nicely with anything ($35). While the Lost Canyon pours some of the finer Pinot Noirs in town (and I truly enjoyed the Morelli Lane Pinot produced entirely from Dijon and Pommard clones), I would like to strongly urge you to try the 2008 Trenton Station Syrah. Please dont get a tasting pour, be sure to order a glass. The 2008 Trenton Station Syrah is one of those unique, memorable Syrahs that truly expresses the primal, sexy, epically alluring quality of Syrah fruit grown in the cooler microclimate, just off River Road in Forestville. Syrahs traditional notes of dusty Earth and hot spice are refocused and tightened by being grown in cooler morning fogs, sandy soils and a longer hang-time on the vine. The Lost Canyon Syrah has a luscious mouth-feel and superb finish of black fruit, burnished leather and red spices. I rarely say this, but Wow ($35). Receive a complimentary wine tasting for two when you mention this article or bring in Wine Country This Week.

Artwork of Michael Holland Returns to Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room & Gallery
The artwork of Sonomas own Michael Holland returns to Charles Creek Vineyards Tasting Room and Gallery with a show of new paintings and prints, scheduled to hang through September 30. The current show is focusing primarily on works created after the artist suffered from a debilitating stroke in 2008. Painting now with his left hand, Mikes post-2008 works, while clearly exhibiting his mastery of color, also display a unique sensibility that goes beyond the physical changes he has experienced since the stroke, seemingly emanating from a different emotional well-spring. Specializing in high quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from great vineyard sources in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, Charles
Creek produces wines that are food friendly, fruit driven, and easily paired with the courses of a meal. The winery Tasting Room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition wine tasting and sales, the Tasting Room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First St. West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

Terin Ignozzi and BRYTER Estates Win Top Awards at the 2012 California State Fair Wine Competition
Sonoma winemaker, Terin Ignozzi at BRYTER Estates just won some of the highest awards at the 2012 California State Fair Wine Competition: BRYTER Estates Inspired Cabernet Sauvignon won Best of California, Best of Napa Double Gold, and 98 points making it the #1 Cabernet in the Land! BRYTER Estates Le Stelle Sparkling Brut with Chardonnay grapes from Sonoma Coast won Best of Class Best of North Coast AVA, 91 points Best overall sparkling wine from the North Coast AVA BRYTER Estates Inspired 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Single Vineyard won a Silver Medal The California State Fair Wine Competition has been called the authentic granddaddy of American wine competitions. First held in 1855, it is, by far, the oldest wine competition in America, and is firmly established as the most prestigious of American Wine Competitions. According to industry leaders, it is the most meaningful of the major competitions restricted to California wines. In addition, the uniqueness of this competition gives further credibility to its future within the industry. It is the only competition that requires all wines to be entered based on the viticultural area (also known as an appellation, Region or AVA) where the grapes are grown, not where the winery is located. This year, the CA State Fair received 2,890 wine entries from 688 participating wineries. The Best of California award is given to only 25 wines one for each varietal / category. After the judges award medals, they line up all of the Double Gold and Gold winners to determine the one best wine for each varietal So when the results were tallied, BRYTER Estates 2009 Inspired Cabernet Sauvignon was named the best overall Cabernet in California. Terin Ignozzi, winemaker uses old world techniques with modern sensibilities to create award-winning wines. Terin and her team are proud to be listed with some of the best wineries in California. With production levels at 1,200 cases per year, BRYTER Estates is truly a boutique winery - a winery of this size winning these awards is truly a substantial feat. BRYTER Estates is a boutique family winery specializing in premium, handcrafted wines from the best vineyards in California. A hidden gem in Sonoma! Inspired by the beauty of old-world winemaking, the enjoyment of food and passion for art, BRYTER Estates is a boutique family winery specializing in small-lot, hand crafted wines. They are passionate about our craft, blending art and science to create perfectly balanced, elegant wines. BRYTTER wines that are ready to drink upon release, but like the best things in life, these wines improve with age. BRYTER tasting room is located at 25 East Napa Street, Suite E, downtown Sonoma and is open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit www.bryter.com or call (707) 501-8272 to learn more about their passion for wine, food, and art.

Foley Family Wines Announces Strategic Partnership With Langtry Estate & Vineyards
FFW To Lead Sales and marketing For Historic Guenoc valley Winery
Foley Family Wines announced it has formed a strategic partnership with Langtry Estate & Vineyards to lead sales and marketing for the iconic Guenoc Valley producer. The Langtry Estate is steward to 23,000 acres within both Lake and Napa Counties. With the establishment of the Guenoc Valley AVA on December 21, 1981, Langtry became the first winery in the nation with its own appellation. Under the Langtry and Guenoc brands, the winery currently crafts approximately 175,000 cases of wine annually. The winery offers four tiers of wines: Langtry Single Vineyard Wines (limited, estate, singlevineyard, luxury-class), Guenoc Lake County Wines (premium, single-AVA), Guenoc North Coast Victorian Claret (Bordeaux blend) and Guenoc California Selection Wines (value, broad distribution). The winery has enjoyed significant critical success for all of its wines. The Guenoc Petite Sirah ranks in the top five in US sales within its price segment. The Guenoc California Selection Sauvignon Blanc is in the top 10 in US sales in its price segment. We are excited to be partnering with the robust sales and marketing team at Foley Family Wines, said Easton Manson, President of Langtry. Their expertise and execution will be invaluable in our efforts to expand sales and distribution across the county for all of our tiers, especially our Guenoc California Selection wines which feature new packaging and redesigned labels. Langtry and Guenoc are the two most recognizable and important brands from Lake County, said Bill Foley. The addition of their wines will strengthen our portfolio and help us gain access to a number of important national and regional accounts. Foley Family Wines was established by Bill Foley in 1996 with the acquisition of Lincourt Vineyards in Californias Santa Ynez Valley. Since then, Foley Family Wines has grown to become a major producer, marketer and distributor of highly-acclaimed, handmade wines from some of the worlds greatest vineyards.

Harvest Celebration Celebrates 31st Year in Lovely Livermore Valley Wine Country
BY LAURA NESS
Livermore Valley Wine Country is truly one of the best-kept secrets in Northern Californias treasure trove of wine regions. If you visit this beautiful hilly vine-rowed mecca on a quintessential late-summer or early-autumn day, youll enjoy the abundant sunshine of summer, cooled by a beautiful breeze that makes sitting outdoors downright pleasant. Hopefully, Harvest Festival this year, held on Sunday, September 2nd and Monday, September 3rd, will be blessed with this kind of weather. On such a day, I happened on Retzlaff Winery as two couples, men in suits, women in fashionably chic dresses, walked in, having just come from a wedding at nearby Ruby Hill Winery. They had an hour until the reception and decided to come wine tasting. Turns out they were from Scottsdale, AZ, and had never been to Livermore. I joined them in a glass of Retzlaff Sauvignong Blanc as they sat in the shade of the enormous pepper trees, transfixed by the natural beauty of the setting. I am sitting here thinking Im really, truly in paradise! said the woman wearing the pearls. This is just so beautiful, I never even thought wine country could be this spectacularly pretty! I wish I could just stay right here, drinking this wine, for the rest of my life! As I left our Arizona visitors to pursue my Harvest Wine Celebration rounds (with visits to Nottingham Cellars, McGrail, Wood Family and Rodrigue Molyneaux), all four were mesmerized by the confluence of the moment: when everything just comes together. I know theyll all be back. They had just discovered the new gold in Livermore: its blonde hills, ruffled by the Bay breeze, and vineyards heavy with Chardonnay grapes glistening in late August afternoon light. You, too can enjoy the beauty of this region on Harvest Festival weekend. Visit Longevity, Nottingham and Occasio, three wineries on Vasco, right next to one another. Therell be plenty of great food, and the wines to pay attention to are the 2010 Sotto Voce and 2011 Sauv Blanc from Occasio, the 2009 Tempranillo from Longevity and the 2010 Awakening GSM from Nottingham Cellars. Then, on to McGrail for some award-winning Cabernet. If its Sangiovese youre hankering for, Rodrigue Molyneaux is your best bet: theyre pouring at Concannon, along with several other wineries, including Darcie Kent Gallery, who makes gorgeous Gruner Veltliner and Merlot, Bodegas Aguirre, whose Malbec and Petite Sirah
are amazing, plus En Garde, one of the newest wineries in the region (lovely ros and tempting Tempranillo). On to Wente, where Muriettas Well is pouring: The Whip and The Spur blends are fantastic values. Make sure to pick up some great mustards and a bottle of something Rhone from Les Chenes Estates while youre there. Its easy to make a full day or two of this festival, now in its 31st year. Many wineries will have special activities planned for Monday, so be sure to come back and enjoy things like bottle your own wine at Cedar Mountain Winery, el Sol Winery and Eckert Estate Winery. Be responsible recyclers, and bring your own bottles! Enjoy barrel tasting at Mitchell Katz or beekeeping demos at el Sol. For tickets and information, including bus route map for Sunday only, visit www.LVwine.org or call 925-447-WINE.

August brings the beginnings of ripeness to the vineyards, and depending on the vagaries of the season, red grapes will begin veraison, turning from green to various shades of purple, somewhere around the middle to the end of this typically toasty month. Everyone is very optimistic about the cropload and the quality so far. Come on out to the vineyards and check out the beautiful Chardonnay at Burrell School and the lovely clusters of Pinotage at Loma Prieta. Winemakers with fog pressures are hoping they dont have to spray for mildew abatement, as the buildup of sulfur on the fruit the closer you get to harvest is not ideal. Theyre also praying that excessive heat waves can be avoided, as the slow maturation of fruit flavors is what theyre after, not just a sudden run-up in sugars which can send cluster chemistry into what literally amounts to diabetic coma. While July is the month where you pull up the wires to accommodate dramatic growth, when you leaf thin for optimal sun exposure and when you pull shoots and drop non-optimal clusters, August is the month you weigh your options on fruit load. If its nice and warm, you might ride it out and keep the clusters in place. If its excessively cool, you take the chance to start dropping fruit. If you dont keep the vines balanced now, you run the risk of either never getting fruit truly ripe before the growing season wanes. Or, you face the consequences of excessive cluster dropping should a September heat wave ensue, throwing the vines into that diabetic coma we talked about earlier, combined with dehydration and heat exhaustion. August is also the time that the bird netting goes up in earnest, and the sounds of bird bombs, air rifles and cannons begin to sound off in those vineyards where netting is too labor intensive. Whether you use the Australian white throwover nets or you install the green or black kind that attach to the trellising and roll up when not in use, most netting lasts only five seasons, due to weathering and UV exposure. Who said having a vineyard was cheap, or fun? Speaking of fun, we know you just wanna have fun in the summer. The Summit to Sea Wineries have tasteful tattoos for the girls. Make sure you get one of those oh so sexy Wine Babes beauties to show off your fabulous summer tan! Grab picnic fixins from the Summit Store and head to one our beautiful mountain wineries for some summer fun.
