Camping is for the

id you know that camping is not just for young people anymore? For much of the year, thats where THEWILDS specializes because there is a great, great need to encourage and rescue a generation of young people. But, the fact remains, adults need the benefits of coming apart for a brief time to hear the Words of Christ in a godly, refreshing, uncomplicated, beautiful environment as well. Adults are now rediscovering what made camp so special to them when they were in those carefree or even turbulent times of youth. We are finding out that critical stretches in life are not just where young people live. Were all in those critical times as Christian spouses, parents, friends, parents-to-our-parents, and employees in the workplace. So we want to reintroduce you to the delights of camping for adults at THEWILDS as a reminder, for the first time, or for the first time in a long time. Ive given our staff, including myself, a unique assignment. Since various ones have a love for a particular adult camp, I want them to convince you that there is one adult retreat or conference you do not want to miss. Each one will write to convince you that this program is the best 2

Whole Family!

program on the planet! They will write as though astonished that anybody would even consider the possibility of wanting to go anywhere but to this time away at THEWILDS. Understand though, we all love em all! Camp is encouraging and wonderful whether youre 7 months, 7, 17, 27, 47, 67, or 77. Here is our attempt to encourage you to come to the mountains and warn you that if you dont, you are really missing out! Really!

ho says senior adults cant have fun? You wont be able to convince the attendees at one of the Senior Adult Conferences at THEWILDS that fun is in the past tense! Let them tell you in their own words about this conference: This is the most fun I have had in years. I cant believe I went on the Giant Swing and want to go again. The falls were beautiful. The food is fantastic. My favorite activity was the miniature golf course. The messages were great. They made me realize how much I have to be thankful for. I gained so many new friends. The field trips were delightful. The accommodations were wonderful. The staff served us so cheerfully. These statements are just a few of the many responses we receive from our senior adult campers each year. In fact, a good percentage of the

attendees sign up for the next years conference before the present week is over! Worried about navigating all of the steps THE WILDS is known for? Fear not! Camp vans are ready and waiting to take you anywhere on the campsite you would like to goexcept the waterfalls, of course! Come and enjoy special music miniconcerts, special demonstrations (such as shepherding, chainsaw carving, and handmade pottery), and hilarious Funtimes. The campsite is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains where Gods creation is always on breathtaking display. The accommodations are fresh and clean, and the program is exciting. Our staff sees to every detail in order to make your stay one of the highlights of your year. Sign up todayas a church group, couple, or singleyoull be delighted you did. We would be excited to talk with your senior adult director to answer any questions. My wife, Diane, and I will be your hosts for the week, and we greatly look forward to welcoming you!

Who says
THE WILDS Christian Association, Inc. is an independent, nondenominational, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization created for the purpose of operating Christian camps and conference centers. We are fundamental in our beliefs, Bible-centered in our philosophy, and evangelistic in our outreach. THE WILDS Christian Association, Inc. presently operates a Christian camp and conference center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina that is open year-round. The camp has a carefully selected and trained staff and averages over 20,000 campers per year. In 2009 THE WILDS of New England began ministry at our campsite in Deering, New Hampshire. In this peaceful, rural setting we experienced good growth in attendance at our summer camps as well as in our limited fall schedule programs. We anticipate a continuing steady growth and expansion of the ministry at this New England location. In addition to providing a God-honoring music publication service as an integral part of our ministry, THE WILDS Christian Association, Inc.

LOVE Those Ladies Retreats!

love, Love,
Question: Why are Ladies Retreats the best adult programs? Answer: Hats!
Hats? Yes, ladies wear so many different hats! They may have the wife, mother, daughter, friend, church member, employee, manager, cook, housekeeper, teacher, home decorator, hand-crafter, financial manager, or organizer hat; and the list can go on and on. But when they come up the mountain to one of our spring retreats, ladies can take off some of those hats for a few hours: Work Hat: A consuming hat (whether worn while working outside or inside the home) that gets a rest! Hard Hat: The depressing news reports, the turmoil of the world, and some of the burdens of life traded for the quiet beauty of Gods creation as we are challenged and encouraged by the truths of Gods Word. Busyness Hat: Life gets pretty crazy, and its wonderful to take off that hat and relax. Chefs Hat: Ladies are rarely free from the fixing of food, so we thoroughly enjoy eating delicious meals we dont have to cook! Mom Hat: We can take off the mom hat and let Dad wear it. (But you know the kids will eat at McDonalds three times and the house may not recover until mom puts her housework hat back on.) What lady hasnt gone by the fancy hat display in Macys and been tempted to try on some of the gorgeous or outlandish hats? While at THE WILDS, ladies can try on some outlandish and interesting hats: Daring Hat: We can experience many of the same fun and adventuresome activities that teen campers enjoy. (Oh, Mom, too bad youll never be able to make it to the waterfalls!) The camera wont lie! Silly Hat: Laughter. Skits. Late-night giggles. Being silly is a huge part of the camp package. Friend Hat: One of the favorite things about a ladies retreat is the ladies! Enjoying old friends, turning acquaintances into friends, and making new friends is a natural part of coming to a ladies retreat. 6 newsletter spring 2012

When its time to go back down the mountain, each lady will head home wearing some lovely new hats: Spiritually-refreshed Hat: Every lady leaves THEWILDS having been challenged and refreshed by the truths of Gods Word presented by the speaker, the workshop leaders, the beautiful and God-honoring music, and her personal time with God. Resource Hat: Through the workshops, the General Store, and the counseling and recorded ministries, ladies can take advantage of the various practical resources that help women and their families grow spiritually, learning how to deal with lifes problems biblically. Encouraged Hat: We head home encouraged and ready to redon our everyday work hats with enthusiasm. Yes, the best retreats are definitely the Ladies Retreatsevery single year!

Family vacations are all about great memories. Those of us who were around before minivans may remember riding with our siblings in the back of a station wagon and singing The Bear Went Over the Mountain or stopping to take the first of hundreds of pictures before entering a state park. Maybe your favorite memories included hearing moms hysterical screams while on a rollercoaster in the theme park or listening to Dad makes lame excuses as to why it was best for him not to ride! Those vacations were great fun, but how about a remarkable memory- filled week with a spiritual impact for the whole family? THE WILDS Family Camp provides adventure, excitement, and spiritual refreshment without regret and without spending a fortune! THE WILDS Family Camps are a change of pace whether you choose continuous action with the dozens of Freetime activities or the calmer hangin out with family route. Regardless of your familys choice of pace, come make life-changing memories by spending time together by hearing Gods Word preached by age appropriate speakers. The messages from Gods Word tend to be the greatest memories of allmemories that make a difference throughout the year! Family Camps are available for a weekend or an entire week. Lets do this great family vacation together at THE WILDS!

Bring a Friend

Summer
When I was in high school, our church would designate one Sunday a year as Friend Sunday. This was a Sunday that everyone in the church was supposed to try his best to bring a guest with him to church. Of course, every Sunday was a great Sunday to bring a guest, but this particular Sunday we were supposed to make a focused effort to bring a friend. I would like to officially designate the summer of 2012 at THEWILDS as the Bring a Friend summer. (Am I even allowed to do this?) While I would hope that you are trying every summer to bring a friend to camp with you, lets try especially hard this summer to get someone to come to camp with you who has never been to THEWILDS. Invite your cousins. Invite someone from your public school. Invite someone from your Christian school. Invite someone from your homeschool (pets and/or underage siblings dont count). But seriously, Homeschoolers, invite someone from your youth group, neighborhood, job, or sports team. Here are a few suggestions of ways to invite your friends. Show them your camp DVD from last summer. How could someone resist coming to camp with you after seeing that? What? You didnt get a DVD from last summer? No worries! You can go to our website and show them the video on the Teen Camp page. (www.wilds.org)

Tell them about Cool Beans. That says it all! Promise them youll pay their way. Of course Im jokingsort of. Wouldnt it be really neat for you to save your money and pay for someone to come to camp, and perhaps even see them make a life changing decision for Christ? It would be worth every penny.

2012 Scripture MeMory paSSageS

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:3-5 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Romans 12:6-8 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:9-10 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Romans 12:11-13 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Romans 12:14-16 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Romans 12:17-18 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:19-21 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Summer lasts a long time. I know it is not nearly long enough considering you go to school for 9 months and only get a 3-month break, but just be glad you're not in Japan or China where they go to school for...never mind, I digress. Summer is long enough and taking ONE WEEK to go to camp is a no brainer (tubing, wacky games, Funtime, great counselors, stairs, great preaching, stairs, Paintball, stairs)! One week at THEWILDS has been a life changing experience for many teenagers (including me). God could use you to get your friend to camp so the Word of God could change his or her life as well. Take the challenge and bring one person with you who has never been to THEWILDS. The Bring a Friend summer challenge has officially started! Hasnt it? Sure it has! P.S. Bring this article and your first-time friend to me this summer, and youll both get a free drink from Cool Beans! Now, that makes it official!

can do camping for all seasons? The answer is simplethe seasons I refer to are the seasons of life, not the seasons of the year. Whether people find themselves in the youthful exuberance of the spring of their life or the slower pace of senior adulthood in the autumn of their life, they can each find a program at THEWILDS to encourage them in their walk and challenge them in their relationship with God. How is it that all people, regardless of their season of life, can have their needs met at just one camp? This answer is also simple: God does it! He does it through faithful servants and supporters that He calls to serve Him through THEWILDS ministries. God called a few faithful people to lay the foundation for THEWILDS in 1968

and 1969 and a whole lot of faithful friends and staff to build on that foundation to keep the ministry going and growing. I am blessed to hear regularly from ministry friends who helped us get started in the early years and have now seen two more generations of their own family attend camp and support us in a variety of ways. We actually have several families who have supported this ministry for over 40 years that is God working through them and using them to help us for His glory. God enabled the development of a sound biblical philosophy to guide the direction for and the management of the ministry. The following is our Mission Statement: Using the unique benefits of Christian camping, we serve people by presenting the Truth of God with the love of God so lives can be changed to the glory of God. God has blessed us with beautiful, naturally impressive properties on which to offer our wide variety of programs. The North Carolina property consists of over 1,000 acres of hills, streams, a lake, waterfalls, woods, and other natural characteristics that make it an exceptionally attractive

place for retreating from the world and getting closer to God. The New Hampshire property is 105 acres of rare, rural beauty and is uniquely located to provide a camper with the unmistakable feeling of being in a peaceful place of reflection and meditation right in the midst of a very busy world. Through hundreds of ministry friends, God has enabled us to acquire and develop these properties debt-free so the liberty to minister would not be burdened by the extra load of debt. Thousands of campers (over 22,000 in 2011) participate in the programs of THEWILDS ministries annually. They are campers in all seasons (of life). This is possible because God is using many churches and friends to uphold us with their attendance, volunteer service, and financial resources. As stewards of this great trust and substantial investment, we are striving, by Gods grace, to be found faithful. If God is laying it on your heart to be more involved in THEWILDS ministries in one or more of the ways mentioned, you will graciously respond to His leading. I TRUST.

Assistant Director THE WILDS Brevard, North Carolina

I am a pyro. I love a good fire (safe one, of course), and somehow, my three boys inherited the pyro gene from me. A good campfire is like a magnet that pulls all four us to view its wonders. The flickering flames, the pulsating coals within, the smoke in the eyesawesome! But we are not alone. I believe most boys (old and young) love a good campfire. So when I was asked to write an article about the Father/Son Campout, fire was the most irresistible reason I could see for dads and their sons to come. Beyond the fire in the ring of stones is the fire in the smoker our cooks use to make real man mealsfinger-licking good barbeque ribs, thick and juicy hamburgers, hot dogs to perfection, and barbeque chicken that wont quit. And then there is the fire in the griddle used to make fresh pancakes, eggs to order, Philly cheese steaks, grilled cheese sandwiches, and much more. Good fire! Time to eat, Boys! We cant forget the Ready. Aim. Fire. at the Rifle Range, Archery Range, and Slingshot Range. What more could my boys and I ask for? I love the fire in my boys eyes when I challenge them to a game of H-O-R-S-E, miniature golf, Human Foosball, Water Wars, or even a good old-fashioned pillow fight. Bring it on, Boys! (What am I getting myself into?) Dont forget the blazing fire of delight in our eyes when we conquer the Climbing Wall, jump into the 2nd Falls, run like crazy in Cat in the Hat or 3 Ball Baseball, or ascend to the top of a tree. Love it! Lastly, there is the fire in the soul that is fed and nurtured by the practical preaching times. I simply love the confidence of knowing that my boys and I will be encouraged to be more like our God by biblical teaching that meets us where we live every day. Bring it on, Lord! If it seems that I am all fired up about Father/Son Campouts, it is because I am! I cant think of a better way or place for a dad and his son(s) to add a little fire to their lives. Fire it up, Boys!
