Faithful Citizenship Quote

"As we tinker with the beginning, the end and even the intimate cell structure of life, we tinker with our own identity as a free nation dedicated to the dignity of the human person. When American political life becomes an experiment on people rather than for and by them, it will no longer be worth conducting. We are arguably moving closer to that day. Today, when the inviolable rights of the human person are proclaimed and the value of life publicly affirmed, the most basic human right, 'the right to life, is being denied or trampled upon, especially at the more significant moments of existence: the moment of birth and the moment of death' (Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life [Evangelium Vitae], 18)" (US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n.4).

A Message from Rachels Vineyard

This weekend literally saved my life." - Retreatant Testimony Rachels Hope is hosting a Rachels Vineyard Retreat for anyone hurting from a past abortion, October 26-28, 2012. Mass Intentions
As Catholics, we have a long tradition of having Masses celebrated for those we wish to offer up in prayer. The Mass is the ultimate form of prayer, and each Mass is celebrated for an intention. Please consider having Masses celebrated for family and friends on special occasions and anniversaries, as well as those who are in need of prayers. Masses are also encouraged in memory of those loved ones who have died, especially on the anniversaries of their deaths. Contact Fr. Cory for more information!

From the Office of Stewardship and Development

Stewardship Thought: In the First Reading, Joshua gives the ancient Israelites a choice to either serve God or the pagan gods of the Amorites. He boldly proclaims that he and his family will serve the Lord. In St. Johns Gospel, after many disciples turn away from His teaching on His everlasting gift of his Body and Blood, Jesus asks the Apostles if they, too, want to leave Him and go back to their old way of life. Simon-Peter professes that Jesus has the words of eternal life; where else would they go? Serving the Lord as a Christian steward is not easy. There is a cost to follow Christ, but He gives us the strength to accept that cost. Development Thought: Did you know you can make plans to give your house to our Parish or to our Diocese? You can even deed your home today, and continue to live there for as long as youd like. It is called a life estate. By doing so, you will receive immediate tax benefits, avoid potential estate tax upon your passing and unburden your beneficiaries from having to sell. You could also deed your home to the Church (and stay living in it if you wish), in exchange for a Charitable Gift Annuity. This would provide you a lifelong, level income at an excellent rate, while also enjoying tax benefits. Most of all, you will experience the joy of knowing you have made a significant gift to your Church that will help evangelize and build the Kingdom of God. To learn more, contact Father or Judy Held (diocesan staff) at 800-332-9998. To reserve the Parish Basement or other St. Marys facility, please contact Fr. Cory or Lana at the Parish Office.

Religious Education
As I am sitting at my computer, trying to write a letter of encouragement to our parish, on our need for Religious Education teachers/leaders/sharers, the words that are beckoning me are USE OUR CHILDREN To help us! To inspire us!! To encourage us!!! Wow, that seems to be a pretty cool idea. And HE has already inspired us to have our families be the real teachers of our children in their faith lives. I believe that so many of us do not feel we are qualified to teach what we may think is needed to be learned. But, we, as parents are the ones that God entrusted with these children. He knows we are qualified. He will give us all that we need So dear LORD, we are asking YOU to guide us through this Year of Faith.through Jesus name we prayAMEN But, as with all good ideas there is the but..we need the help of our whole parish family to do this. Remember at baptisms, we promised to help raise these children in the way they should go. We cant let this phrase be just words.we need these words to be action real, to be active words. So, I believe this letter was started by asking for help with Religious Education on Wed nights. The needs are great, class leaders to help with reinforcing what is learned at home, craft people, food people, prayer people.. We will have a RE registration kickoff POTLUCK on Wednesday night, Sept 5th beginning at 5:45. Bring your favorite dish and share a fellowship with us. We will have a short lesson at about 6:30 to share what our year holds for us and what that means for each of us!!! THIS IS FOR ALL PARISH MEMBERS As we remember that it takes a whole parish to raise a child. Basics of Catholicism
This is where becoming a missionary comes in. The call by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI to a new evangelization is a call to renewing our missionary zeal. We need to be inviting For those of us here in Montana, this might seem hard to people to join us. We need to be talking about what we believe as Catholics. We need to be encouraging those who are not believe. There are some parts of New York or Philadelphia that practicing their faith to take it seriously, and those of us who are to have more Catholic churches in one square mile than we have in always go deeper. As Greg Erlandson, editor of Our Sunday some of our counties. New York and Philadelphia have Catholic populations that date back almost to the original settlement of the Visitor magazine, said in Cardinal Dolans post, Without a conversion of heart, starting with ourselves, we may never truly 13 colonies, while most of the Catholic population in Montana date only back to the late 1800s. How can those two archdiocese address the heart of the current crisis. with massive populations be mission territory, and does that mean When we held the two meetings in Malta last spring, the were also in mission territory? purpose was to brainstorm ideas of how we can put the New Evangelization into effect here and now. The conversation isnt The simple answer to both questions is that they are mission territory and so are we. As Catholics, we have an image of over, however. More meetings will come, and there will be mission territory being somewhere in Africa or South America or activities and events as part of the upcoming Year of Faith that will even Asian countries that do not have a large Christian population. help to strengthen and grow how we practice the faith and give us the tools to encourage others to join us. We see missionary work going to another part of the world and another culture for the sake of proclaiming the Gospel of Christ. We shouldnt wait, however, for some future point in which we think well be ready to evangelize. We need to begin While this form of missionary work is important and now, if we havent already. Some might say, But I dont know should be encouraged, were missing an important aspect in our enough. Fine. Time to pick up a book or two to learn - I understanding on being a missionary. Cardinal Dolan put what it recommend the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults - but means to be a missionary when he wrote, we are a mission territory, too. Every diocese is. And every committed Catholic is start now with what you do know. You dont have to know anything to invite someone to Mass. If you want to ensure a missionary. To be a missionary means to proclaim the Gospel someone will come, say as part of the invitation, Ill pick you up to everyone. on Sunday. See you at 9:45! and follow up with them. The problem is that were not proclaiming the Gospel. If As Catholics, we should be greatly disturbed that young we were, our churches would be full. Nearly every weekend, one person or another is mentioned as someone who used to come to men and women are not practicing the Catholic Faith, and we should be doing everything in our power to encourage them. We church, but doesnt anymore or grew up Catholic, but stopped are in mission territory, and we are called to be missionaries! coming or married outside the Church and joined their wifes church. Weve assumed that just having a Religious Education program and bringing the kids through the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation is going to be enough to make them into Catholics. As we see by the shrinking numbers of younger people who attend Mass, this isnt happening. Going back to Cardinal Dolans post, he quotes John Garvey, president of the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, More and more residents of the Western World [you and me!] are simply wandering away from their faith, which means that what is happening in Philadelphia is but a microcosm of a much more disturbing erosion. The Religious Education and put them through the Sacraments method isnt working. Younger adults arent practicing the faith in which they grew up, which means theyre not passing it on to their kids. We see this in our Religious Education program. Very few of our RE kids have a basic understanding of the faith, and the number of kids who attend Mass with their parents on a weekly basis is extremely low. About the only time any sizable number of kids attend Mass with their parents is for the monthly Childrens About a month ago, Archbishop Charles Chaput, new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, stated that his archdiocese is now really a mission territory. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Cardinal Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York, echoed this statement by writing on his personal blog, Our beloved Archdiocese of New York is also mission territory! Choir. There are some RE kids Ive never seen at Mass throughout my 2 years here! This is not a good situation, and we need to do something about it.
