Design and Utilization of Fiber Networks for Temperature Monitoring along Cable Lines Abstract
The paper briefly describes the advancement of long sensors cable we can measure the temperature. The paper mainly describes the practical task to design the layout of sensor cables. Finally the paper deals with the utilization of the temperature data in the frame of Computer-Aided Facility Management(CAFM).

Introduction
In buildings and other structures, this cables are used in a special arrangements which we generally call as Cable lines. The cables for temperature measurement consists of small semiconductor sensors located with a distance of usually 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 8 m within the cable. They are connected by four wires to a supervisory station, by which they can be separately addressed. The arrangement of these sensors within the cable are suitable for temperature measurement.

Temperature Measurement By Optical Fibers

Temperature measurement by optical fibers is based on Optical Time Domain Reflectrometry (OTDR).

Characteristics of the ODTR-method

1. Temperature measurement along a distance of up to 20 km. 2. Continuous measurement on long distances. 3. Applicable in a wide temperature range and in severe environment. conditions (e.g. pH-value 2 2). 4. Sensor cable can be laid out in non-accessible spots and regions. 5. Measuring process does not affect the temperature. 6. Technique permits long-term monitoring.

Utilization of temperature data for CAFM

The computer-Aided Network Facility Management (CANFM)system, being an important special field of Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM). generates automatically a flame symbol at the position where overheating occurs. Thus, it is possible to see the location of fire sources in a floor plan on the display. The powerful CAFM-systems contain much information that can be utilized for efficient decision-making in the case of fire, e.g.. This regards the location of danger

zones, fire-protected doors, the description of possible escape routes for people, and many other aspects.

Future work
During the work in the frame of the project AUTEKA, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economy (Registration code: BMWi 46 1/97). They were confronted with a situation that a large finance company has installed a new optical fibre network for communication purpose without completely removing the existing optical fibre cable lines already used in the buildings. Now they are working on this project so that they can utilize the new developments on the old existing fibre cables and with minimum cost.
