1.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to outline the requirements associated with the selection, purchasing, and supply of appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) in common work situations; and to provide clear and consistent minimum standards for the provision and use of PPE.

SCOPE
This procedure applies to common work situations and outlines the responsibilities and requirements for DBP, its employees and contractors in relation to PPE. In instances of new or unlisted work situations guidance from appropriate personnel should be sought

RESPONSIBILITIES
All personnel are responsible for the correct utilisation of PPE. In particular procurement personnel should not source PPE outside the approved specification as identified without seeking guidance from the Health and Safety, Field Practices or Technical Compliance teams. A range of task specific PPE is maintained within the stores system and is available on an as required basis.

All personnel required to wear PPE will be provided with appropriate training and information in the correct use, inspection and maintenance prior to use. 5.2 Selection and Purchase of PPE Where it is determined that an item of PPE is required for a particular task, the item selected should be the most practicable to best meet the requirements of the task. In determining the most appropriate item of PPE for a task, the following shall be taken into consideration: The possibility of eliminating or mitigating the hazard through more effective control measures; The availability and suitability of PPE to mitigate the hazard to an acceptable level; The practicability of utilisation of the proposed PPE in undertaking the task; and The compatibility of items when more than one item of PPE is required.
The accepted minimum industry standard for PPE is the use of 100% natural fibre clothing offering neck to wrist to ankle (NWA) coverage supplemented with other items to provide a suitable level of protection. Where 100% natural fibre clothing is not possible, the percentage of natural fibre should be as high as practicable with the intent of providing a garment that does not expose the wearer to an increased level of risk. The identification/recommendation of what PPE is best suited for a specific task shall be the responsibility of the relevant Team Leader in conjunction with a suitably skilled member of the HSE Team where necessary. The recommendation may be supplemented with additional advice from the Field Practices, Technical Compliance teams and or external advice as necessary. A more detailed description of PPE types, the risks being actioned, the requirements for activity, the maintenance and inspection is contained in Appendix 1.

PPE STORAGE
All PPE shall be stored in an appropriate manner away from chemicals and heat sources. PPE should not be placed in a location where it is possible to come into contact with sharp or heavy objects. Wet PPE shall be dried before storage where practicable.

Protective Eyewear Where an employee is required to wear protective eyewear whilst working and that employee has a visual defect that requires correction in order that they may perform their work safely, Employees shall be reimbursed for the necessary alterations, eg Lens Hardening and/or tinting in specific instances. Any alterations to eyewear to enable the eyewear to be utilised in the workplace must meet the Australian Standard AS 1337 Eye Protectors for Industrial Applications. (see Personal Protective Equipment Protective Eyewear_HSE 773 1 PR.)

Respiratory Protection Beards and goatees and any hair below the lip can interfere with the sealing of the fitting surface and/or the inhalation and exhalation valve operation. Therefore, no facial hair of any type is permitted. All facial hair with the exception of moustaches and sideburns must be clean shaven.. Moustaches can interfere with the sealing of the fitting surface and/or the inhalation and exhalation valve operation if they are not maintained to an acceptable level. Therefore, moustaches must be kept neatly trimmed and tidy. They are not permitted to grow beyond imaginary lines extending vertically from the corners of the mouth. Sideburns can interfere with the sealing of the fitting surface if they are not maintained to an acceptable level. Therefore, sideburns must be neat and tidy shall not extend below an imaginary line drawn between the centre of the ear hole and the corner of the eye.

APPENDIX 1:
ITEM PROVIDES PROTECTION FROM
WHEN REQUIRED When required by company work instructions, standards and policies and whenever working and auditing in the field, including but not limited to: Designated hard hat areas; Near items of plant (eg cranes, back-hoes, EWPs, etc); Excavating with mechanical equipment or in trenches; In situations where there is a risk of injury to the head; and When work is being carried out above shoulder height. ITEM PROVIDES PROTECTION FROM WHEN REQUIRED When required by company work instructions, standards and policies and whenever working and auditing in the field, including but not limited to: When operating or working near an item of plant that produces significant noise (eg concrete saw, jack hammer, earth stake driver, generator). When attending to gas escapes When using or working near hand held tools that produce significant noise (eg grinders, hammers, welder). In any other situation where significant noise is present.

Sun Protection: Sunscreen, Neck Flaps, Sun Hats, Sunglasses UV radiation Thermal Stress MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION Inspect use by date prior to and after use; and For sunglasses refer to eye protection. GENERAL GUIDANCE When working outdoors for lengthy periods, sunscreen shall be applied and regularly re-applied; and Sunscreen shall have a minimum SPF of 15+. Neck flaps are available for additional UV protection when wearing hard hats. Sun hats only when a hard/safety hat is not required. Sunglasses for bright/glare conditions.

Remove filter and wash in warm water with detergent. Rinse in clear water and allow to air dry away from sunlight.
