ACETAL / DELRIN

Also Known As (common industry trade names): Acetal . Acetron . Co-Polymer . Celcon . Derlin . Ensital . Pomalux . Polyacetal . PolyOxyMethylene (POM) . Sustarin . Tecaform . Ultraform . Unital . ZL 900

Material Information: Acetal and Delrin represent a crystalline thermoplastic polymer that possesses many qualities that make them a leading choice for machined plastic parts. Acetals properties include low water absorption, superior creep resistance, high tensile strength, and high melt point. The low water absorption, coupled with the high tensile strength and modulus, relate to an ability to maintain excellent dimensional stability in close tolerance fabricated parts. The chemical resistance of acetal includes resistance to hydrocarbons, solvents and neutral chemicals. In addition, most of the materials properties are maintained in operating temperatures up to 180 F. The combination of the physical properties and ease of fabrication makes acetal an excellent choice for machined mechanical parts. Applications: Bushings Gears Seals Wheels Bearings Cams Rollers Washers Wear Components
Characteristics /Enhancements /Varieties / Fills:

*PTFE (Teflon) (Delrin AF) The Teflon fill is used in applications where a lower factional coefficient along with improved wear properties is needed. *20% Glass Filled The addition of glass fibers increases the strength of the material and adds dimensional stability.

Nylon (polyamide) has enjoyed increasing success in replacing bronze, brass, steel and aluminum as well as wood and rubber in engineering applications. Nylons high impact resistance, high resistance to brittleness and deterioration, high heat distortion temperature, vibration resistance and machinability make it the perfect material for many applications. Nylon exhibits excellent resistance to a wide array of chemicals including, alkalies, dilute acids, and oxidizing agents which cause many metalics to fail. The relatively light weight of nylon eases handling of large parts as well as lessens both inertial and static loads. Nylon is available in a variety of fills and basic shapes to meet just about every need.

Characteristics/Enhancements/Varieties: Fills: *Molybdenum Disulfide (MOS2): A dry lubricant that is popular in bearing applications. *Oil Filled: With one of the lowest frictional coefficients coupled with the strength and wear of nylon, oil filled is the choice for the most demanding of applications. *30% Glass Reinforced: The glass fill provides additional strength and wear needed in load bearing applications. More Information on Nylon:

(continued - page 2)

Nylons were the first of the thermoplastic engineering resins. These crystalline plastics are available in many compositions. Nylon 6/6 (usually extruded) is the most widely used of the nylon plastics. Higher priced grades for more specific or demanding applications include 6/10 and 6/12. Nylon 6 (usually cast) is the second most widely used of the nylons. Its properties are similar to those of 6/6, but it absorbs moisture more rapidly and its melting point is around 70F lower. Nylon 11 and 12 have better dimensional stability and electrical properties than the other nylons because they absorb less moisture. These types, which are more expensive than the others, are available compounded with plasticizers to provide greater flexibility and ductility. Newest additions to the Nylon family of products are transparent molding grades amorphous polyamides that offer superior performance in hot water, compared with other nylons. A recent development in nylon toughening technology has resulted in the availability of super tough resins, such as Duponts Zytel ST. These materials are 17 times the notched impact resistance of conventional 6/6 nylon. In part because it has been around the longest, but also because of the many variations of resins and additives used in nylon, it is one of the most widely used of the mechanical plastics and can be specially formulated to a wide variety of applications.

Material Information: Phenolics are a laminated plastic created by the impregnation of layers of a substrate with a resin then formed utilizing heat and pressure. The resins are generally Phenolic, silicone, melamine or epoxies while the substrate materials range from paper and cotton to glass. The resulting material is extremely versatile and used in a variety of applications. The notable properties of laminates include impressive resistance to shock, heat, stress, and corrosive chemicals. Phenolics are able to be machined, drilled, punched, sanded, tapped, turned, milled, sheared and cut. The dielectric properties make this an excellent insulator which is used in applications from electrical transformers to circuit boards. Unlike other groups of plastic materials, thermoset plastic industrial laminates have their own standards which are published by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association). In concert with member manufacturers, NEMA standards are set and minimum values published. The most commonly used NEMA thermoset laminate grades are as follows: C, CE (Canvas Cotton-Cloth Reinforced Phenolic) Medium weave cloth G-10 / FR-4 (Glass-Cloth Reinforced Epoxy) . G-11 / FR-5 (like G-10 but higher temp) G-5 / G-9 (Glass-Cloth Reinforced Melamine) . G-7 (Glass Cloth Reinforced Silicone) GPO-1, GPO-2, GPO-3 (Glass-Mat Reinforced Polyester) . Description: Polycarbonate offers all of the clarity and beauty of acrylic with an impact resistance that is unparalleled in glazing materials. Polycarbonate is used in applications such as machine guards and security windows that require the optical clarity and the assurance of safety. Polycarbonate is relatively light weight and is fairly rigid. Polycarbonate is easily sawed, machined, heat formed, cold formed, cemented and painted. Polycarbonates are highmolecular weight, amorphous engineering thermoplastics that have exceptionally high-impact strength over a wide temperature range. Polycarbonate resins are produced in the U.S. principally by General Electric Co (Lexan) and by Bayer Corp (Makrolon). The Dow Chemical Co has recently become the third producer of polycarbonate resins (Calibre). The resins are available in general-purpose and specialty grades that provide specific properties or processing characteristics. These include flameretardant formulations, grades that meet FDA regulations for parts used in food-contact and medical applications, and glass-reinforced grades for applications requiring maximum strength and stiffness. The natural resin is water-clear and transparent. Polycarbonates are generally unaffected by greases and oils. However, they are attacked by most aromatic solvents, esters and keytones which cause crazing and cracking in stressed parts. Grades with improved chemical resistance are available and special coatings can be applied to provide additional chemical protection.

Xylethon Description: Polyethylene has long been considered the work horse of thermoplastics. Its chemical inertness coupled with the ease of fabrication and low cost make it an ideal solution for a variety of applications ranging from harsh chemical environments to notebook covers. Polyethylene, the largest volume thermoplastic polymer used today, is available in a wide variety of grades and formulations that have an equally wide range of properties. Some polyethylenes are flexible, others are rigid; some have poor impact strength, others are virtually unbreakable; some have good clarity; others are opaque. Service temperatures can range from -40 to +200F. In general, however, polyethylenes are characterized by toughness, excellent chemical resistance and electrical properties, low coefficient of friction, near-zero moisture absorption, light weight (approximately one-eighth that of steel) and ease of processing. Polyethylenes are classified into three main categories, according to density: Low, Medium and High. A fourth type, ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE), is beyond the high-density range. In some cases, properties of this high-performance plastic are similar to other polyethyenes, but in others cases can be dramatically different. Also available is crosslinked polyethylene, a special grade which, by chemical or irradiation treatment, becomes essentially a thermoset material with outstanding heat resistance and strength.

Classification of Polyethylenes:
Polyethylene is classified into several different categories based mostly on its density and branching. The mechanical properties of PE depend significantly on variables such as the extent and type of branching, the crystal structure, and the molecular weight. UHMWPE(ultra high molecular weight PE) HMWPE (high molecular weight polyethylene) HDPE (high density PE) HDXLPE (high density cross-linked PE) PEX (cross-linked PE) MDPE (medium density PE) LDPE (low density PE) LLDPE (linear low density PE) VLDPE (very low density PE)

POLYPROPYLENE
Also Known As (common industry trade names): Cor-X . Corogard . Coroplast . Coroplast CI . Coroplast SI . Copolymer Polypropylene Ensipro . Homopolymer Polypropylene . Intepro IR . Resinol Type O . Polystone . Polystone P Propylux . Propylux . PPro . Ultrapro
Material Description: Polypropylene has long been recognized for its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent chemical resistance, as well as high performance in corrosive environments. This material is easily thermoformed and welded making it a popular choice for chemical and plating tanks. Polypropylene homopolymer meets FDA 21CFR 177.1520 requirements and is approved by the FDA for use in poultry and meat packing facilities. The copolymer offers a greater impact strength along with stronger low temperature impact resistance. Both homopolymer and copolymer maintain high degrees of flexural strength and low moisture absorption. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic made by the polymerization of propylene gas, a by-product of petroleum refining. Various techniques can vary the physical, chemical or mechanical properties of polypropylene. Polypropylene is easily fabricated with ordinary wood or metalworking equipment. It can be welded with standard plastic welding equipment. Polypropylene has such a hard, high gloss surface it is ideally suited to environments where there is concern for bacteria buildup or buildup that can interfere with flow. Excellent track, arc resistance and dielectric strength allows polypropylene to be used extensively in electrical applications. It can also be modified to be conductive or antistatic. As a homopolymer, polypropylenes use temperature ranges from 30 to 210F, depending on specific chemistry. For copolymers use temperatures can range from -20 to 180F. Resistance to chemicals and solvents is very good. It has good resistance to aqueous, salts, acids or alkaline solutions. It also has very low permeability to water vapor and gases. Because of its excellent resistance to solvents, it finds extensive use in the semiconductor industry. It performs well in the presence of DI water. Polypropylene can be used in direct contact with foods, and many icecube trays are made from it because of its toughness and flexibility at low temperatures.

Care must be taken when in the presence of active oxidizing agents, especially with fabricated parts. Numerous chemical resistance charts are based solely on press molded plaques and do not take fabricated parts into consideration. The resins are attacked, however, by halogens, fuming nitric acid and other active oxidizing agents, and by aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons at high temperatures.

POLYURETHANE
Also Known As (common industry trade names): Material Information: Polyurethanes are versatile engineering materials designed to provide properties not available in conventional rubbers, metals and plastics. Typically they have higher oil and solvent resistance, along with greater abrasion and tear resistance. Impact strength, low compression set and superior load bearing capacity are also important engineering characteristics. Urethane is available in several different forms such as thermoplastic, thermoset, coatings and foams (flexible, semirigid, rigid and integral skin). A variety of processes are used to produce parts, including injection molding, extrusion, RIM, spray and casting. Most can be supplied in polyether or polyester base formulations. The ethers are generally better for use in contact with water and have higher heat resistance. The esters have higher abrasion and oil resistance. Thermoset and some foam types are supplied in standard shapes (sheet, rod, bar and tube) as well as custom molded parts. Advantages of the cast types are low cost tooling and short production runs. Injection and extrusion will generally result in lower piece prices, but tooling can be quite expensive. Applications: Seals . Printing Rolls Die Pads . Gaskets Idler Rollers . PVC is easily machined, thermoformed, welded, and solvent cemented. PVC is weather resistant, maintains a high impact strength and has good electrical properties. PVC is available either flexible or rigid. CPVC is a higher temperature material that can see service temperatures to 190 degrees F. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl is usually an amorphous thermoplastic material with excellent chemical resistance and dielectric properties, good tensile, flexural and mechanical strength, low moisture absorption, exceptional dimensional stability and good flammability characteristics. The maximum service temperature for PVC is 140 F. The physical properties of PVC can be readily altered by addition of plasticizers, impact modifiers and other ingredients to develop and enhance specific properties. Generally there are two basic types of PVC available - rigid PVC and plasticized, flexible, PVC or vinyl. Additional subcategories of rigid and flexible PVC with desirable physical properties targeted to a specific application can be developed by altering additives to the base resin (i.e., the addition of UV stabilizers to enhance weatherability of rigid vinyl siding used in outdoor applications, etc.). Also Known As (common industry trade names): PTFE . TFE . Chemflour . Surf Chemical . Teflon Material Description: Teflon was originally developed for use in aerospace applications but soon found a home in countless industrial applications. Teflons unique characteristics include: chemical inertness (very few chemicals can attack it), extremely low coefficient of friction (nothing can stick to the material with any strength), high heat resistance (capable of service temperatures of 500 F) and extremely useful in cold temperature environments. The fluoroplastics industry began in 1938. DuPont Company discovered the fluorocarbon poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE). DuPont called it Teflon. Over the past 60 years, the industry has commercialized seven additional fluoroplastics: FEP, PVDF, PFA, ETFE, PCTFE, ECTFE and PVF. Applications: Gaskets Washers Backup Rings Various Packing Material Rollers Containers Sleeves Liners Conveyor Components Bearings Insulators Standard Sheet:: Rod: Tube: Film: Other: Characteristics: Dielectric Properties, High Surface and Volume Resistivity, Corrosion Resistant, Nonflammable, High Heat Resistance, Chemically Inert, Weather Resistant, Low Friction Additives: Graphite . PVF (polyvinyl fluoride) has outstanding resistance to weathering and good resistance to abrasion and staining. It is used as a surfacing film for industrial, architectural and decorative building materials. PTFE (molded) is not able to be melt processed. The resin must be compressed, then sintered (a controlled heat treatment) to produce useful plastic. FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) processes by conventional means. It is extruded and injection molded. It has the chemical resistance, mechanical and electrical properties of PTFE but a more narrow temperature range maximum temperature is 400F. Commonly used to make chemical resistant tanks and vessels for the corrosive chemical industry. PVDF (poly-vinylidene fluoride) is not a processable fluoropolymer capable of being injection and compression molded and screw extruded. It is stiffer and resists cold flow better than PTFE, FEP, and PFA. It has a lower useful temperature range (-80 to +300F). Glass backed sheets of PVDF make liners for vessels as does FEP. Pipe and fittings of PVDF are one of the most economical and chemical resistant, high temperature solid pipe systems available. PFA (polyfluoroalkoxy) is also melt processable. Its properties are those of PTFE and include resistance to practically all chemicals, the useful temperature range of PTFE, resistance to weathering, low friction coefficient and excellent electrical insulation characteristics. It is however, more expensive than PTFE and FEP resins. ETFE (ethylene tetra fluoro ethylene) is a copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene and is readily processed by conventional methods. It has maximum service temperature of 300F but greater strength and stiffness than PTFE, FEP and PFA. ETFE also has excellent impact strength. PCTFE (polychlorotrifluoroethylene) is melt processible. Within its service temperature range, it has greater tensile and compressive strength than PCTFE, FEP, or PFA. At high temperatures it is subject to stress cracking. It does not have the solvent resistance of PTFE, FEP, PFA or ETFE. However, its radiation resistance is better than any of these others. ECTFE (ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) is a copolymer of ethylene and PCTFE. It is melt processible. It has excellent electrical insulating properties. At ambient temperatures its mechanical properties compare to those of nylon 6. It has excellent impact resistance at ambient and sub ambient temperatures. Its service range is -80 to +300F.
