TS 2000 Safety for operation and environment

Depending on the aggregate in which they are used, the mode of operation and the environmental protection requirements involved, etc., mechanical seals as a rule need additional equipment which ensures problem-free functioning or, in many cases, enables this in the first place. Circuit pipelines are among the few applications which allow a socalled dead-end arrangement; they are to be installed in the most basic case for single seals, e.g. from the pump discharge. However, increasing demands on mechanical seals necessitate changes in their design, mode of operation and thus ultimately their supply facilities. The Burgmann TS system fulfils all the basic tasks of a buffer system for the operation of double seals, including: b pressurization of the buffer compartment b leakage compensation b circulation and cooling of the buffer medium b cooling of the seal When used with mechanical seals in tandem arrangement, the TS system also ensures, among others: b specific absorption of product leakage and b prevents dry running.

TS 2000
Thermosiphon vessel Pressure vessel with torispherical heads, sight-glass for level monitoring and incorporated cooling coil. (All threaded connections to DIN/ISO 228. Assembly holes also in accordance with DIN 28162). TS vessels are supplied with all the necessary connections and mounts as standard. Additional components may be retrofitted as required. The TS system forms a closed buffer fluid circuit. All components are under the same pressure. Designed, constructed and manufactured in accordance with the Pressure Vessel Directive 97/23/EC. Conformity assessed to module H. The AD 2000 Design Code was used as the specification. b All TIG, TIG plasma and MIG-welded joints that are required to withstand pressure are either through-welded or backwelded. b Sockets with recessed gasket (no contamination of the circuit by thread sealant). b Cooling water connection OUT at the top and IN at the bottom, for venting and draining.

Burgmann Thermosiphon System TS 2000

Assembly and Operating Instructions
Assembly The thermosiphon vessel must always be mounted on a higher level than the mechanical seal, the recommended distance being 12 meters. For thermosiphon system with circulation devices a shorter distance is possible and recommendable. The uppermost connection of the seal cartridge is to be connected to the lateral connection of the thermosiphon vessel. For the connecting pipework cold-drawn precision tubes made of stainless steel (18 x 1.5) in connection with screwed pipe joints have to be used. The piping layout between mechanical seal and thermosiphon vessel has to be such as to afford a minimum of resistance of circulation; any form of throttling has to be avoided. Air-traps in the buffer system have to be avoided under all circumstances. The mechanical seal and the pipework must be capable of self-venting between the seal and the thermosiphon vessel. The coolant supply has to be installed and controlled in such a manner that the maximum allowable operating pressure of the cooling coil is not exceeded and that the flow is controllable. Using a flow controller may assist in minimizing coolant consumption. A valve for draining the system should be provided at the lowest point of the system. Additional application in connection with double mechanical seals Pressurization with N2 from nitrogen supply system or bottle b Nitrogen supply system: A non-return valve has to be provided in the N2-supply line towards the thermosiphon vessel. In case the supply pressure is too high, a self-relieving pressure regulator is required. If pressurization is effected directly from the supply system, the thermosiphon vessel has to be protected by an additional safety valve. b Nitrogen bottle: A self-relieving pressure regulator has to be provided. Additional application in connection with mechanical seals in tandem arrangement Depending on procedure a flare- or overflow pipe may be required. After start up of the buffer system the mechanical seal may be loaded on the product side. Subsequently the machine (pump/agitator) can be started. During operation it has to be ensured that the filling level in the vessel does not decrease below the MIN-level or increase above the MAX-level. If the MAX-level is reached, the level in the vessel has to be lowered to the middle of the sight glass. Pressure Vessel Directive
b The pressure vessels must be manufactured and tested in accordance with a national design code that has been harmonised with EU Directive 97/23/EC. Burgmann pressure vessels are manufactured and produced in accordance with the AD 2000 Design Code. b According to the AD 2000 Design Code, a material certificate conforming to EN 10204/3.1B or 3.1C is required for all parts made from austenitic steels that are required to withstand pressure and is to be submitted to the manufacturer. b A pressure test is carried out on every TS vessel. The test pressure is specified in the AD 2000 Design Code. b The pressure vessels are classified by category and medium. Vessels from the TS2000 series should be classified as category 2 or category 3. They are suitable for use with a wide range of different media, so they are designed for fluid group 1. b A hazard analysis conforming to the Pressure Vessel Directive was carried out for the TS vessels. b The conformity is assessed to module H. The appointed testing body is the TV for South Germany (ID number 0036). b Every vessel from the TS 2000 series is identified with the CE mark and the ID number of the appointed testing body (CE0036) if the Pressure Vessel Directive is applied. b A certificate for the pressure inspections and final tests, an as-built drawing and an operating manual are supplied as documentation with every TS tank. Material certificates are archived by us and may be viewed upon request.

Start-up Double mechanical seals The start up procedure is always carried out as follows: b Filling of the vessel with clean buffer fluid up to the MAX-level of the level gauge. This can be done via the filling connection provided at the vessel (pressureless vessel) or by a manually driven refill pump. b In case of a natural circulation the viscosity of the buffer fluid must not exceed 20 mm2/s. If a circulation pump is used the max. permitted operational values of the pump have to be observed. b Filling level is controlled by a levelswitch with MIN-contact.
SPS N2 (from PCV)* SPI

Pressurizing adjustment of the buffer pressure. The pressure of the nitrogen (buffer pressure) has to be adjusted to a value of 2 bar above the highest pressure occuring during operation. If there are pressure fluctuations at the product side a sufficient safety distance between this product pressure and the buffer pressure has to be chosen. b Opening of coolant supply line and appropriate adjustment of the flow rate. After start up of the buffer system the relating mechanical seal may be loaded on the product side. Subsequently the machine (pump/agitator) can be started. During operation it must be ensured that the filling level in the thermosyphon vessel does not decrease below the MINlevel and that the buffer pressure is always above the product pressure.
b

Mechanical seals in tandem arrangement The start up procedure is always carried out as follows: b Filling of the vessel with clean buffer fluid up to the middle of the sight glass. This filling can be carried out via the filling connection provided at the vessel. b In case of a natural circulation the viscosity of the buffer fluid must not exceed 20 mm2/s. If a circulation pump is used the max. permitted operational values of the pump have to be observed. b Filling level is controlled by a level switch with MIN- and MAX-contact. For the procedure with flare- or overflow pipe the MAX-contact is obmitted. b Opening of coolant supply line and appropriate adjustment of the flow rate.
