RAPID CITY #35 by Josh Dahl Joshdahl75@gmail.com Page 1 Panel 1 The story so far. 5 panels In the evening, police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances outside the hospital from the previous issue. Andrew and Charge being zipped into body bags. Switchboard slumping in her chair, surrounded by monitors showing scenes of the hospital attack and aftermath. A local chain department store with its front window smashed and an alarm going off. It is night. Night time. Coil is hiding behind a fence at a construction site as a police car goes past. Icicle at the grave. 6 panels At night, close on a door handle. This is the rear door of a grocery store. Very similar shot, but now a woman's left hand, covered in ice armor, is reaching toward the locking mechanism. Ice is extending from her fingers and into crack between the door and the frame. Similar shot, but now there is ice spreading out, just an inch or two, across the door and the frame. Shot from inside the place that is being broken into. There is a crack of light where the door is opening just enough to admit a shape similar to Icicle. A full shot of Icicle. She is just inside the door. She is lit by the light coming through the open door behind her. Her left arm has spiky ice armor on it. Her right arm is a bandaged stump at mid-bicep. She is wearing a t-shirt, yoga pants, shoes that do not require tying. She has a small athletic bag over her left shoulder. Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. Close on her bandaged stump. Small ice spikes are growing out through the bandages. At their bases, they glow slightly. ICICLE This ice is my armor. ICICLE

A cold, hard, shell. Page 3 Panel 1 Stop and Shop. 2 panels Very thin panel across the top of the page. The boarded-up grocery store from the heist in issue #23. Icicle's balloon comes from inside. ICICLE I came here to talk to you... Panel 2 The whole rest of the page, making this the splash page. Inside the store, it is very dark. Our camera is near the boarded-up windows, so there is some light trickling through. We are looking across the dark, empty, store to the door through which Icicle has just entered. She looks very small back there. In the foreground, a dark, shadowy, figure stands and looks at Icicle. This is the ghost/memory of Piledriver, so he can be partially insubstantial. ICICLE ...Because this is the last place I saw you alive. Page 4 Panel 1 1 Icicle in denial and isolation. 6 panels Our "eyes" are adjusting to the dark and this scene starts to seem lighter. This panel is Icicle looking small and alone. The ghost image of Piledriver is more clear now. He is just standing in the foreground, not really paying attention to her. His speech is just floating caption boxes. It does not need to look like he is actually speaking it. ICICLE I know you're not here. But I... ICICLE I don't have anywhere else to go. PILEDRIVER You're not trapped. You're here with me. Panel 2 Icicle approaching where the escape hole had been busted in the floor. ICICLE That whole set-up's gone now. The vault and that science stuff. There's not even any police tape up. Panel 3 Close on Icicle looking down. ICICLE It's like none of it even happened. Panel 4 Wider shot again. Icicle is removing the athletic bag

she has been carrying. The ghost is nowhere to be seen. ICICLE As far as the cops know, it didn't. To them, you're not even dead. You, and Black Flag, and The Cut are just missing. Panel 5 Icicle pulling a plastic handle-jug of vodka from the bag. ICICLE That's all. You're probably on the run... hiding out somewhere. PILEDRIVER All I've got to do is get everyone out of there. I can do that with my eyes closed. Panel 6 Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. Tight shot on a hard looking column of ice spikes. The spikes are thickest at the base of the column, the newer, thinner, ones glow slightly as they are forming. ICICLE Super-dense ice crystals created by my super power. ICICLE I can feel it when they're forming. That blue glow inside them, that's my power. Page 5 Panel 1 Hartborn reports. 6 panels Agent Hartborn is sitting alone at a small table in a break room at the MRA. There is just one small light in the room and it is not right on him. He has nothing on the table in front of him and he is just looking at his hands. In the hall outside the break room, a woman in her 50s, DIRECTOR DILORENZO, is talking to two men. All three look worn out after a long day. DIRECTOR OK, fellas, try to get some rest. This isn't going away any time soon. MAN You got it. Panel 3 Director Dilorenzo standing in the doorway to the break room, talking to Hartborn. DIRECTOR

Agent Hartborn. I'm glad you're still here. I want to talk to you. Panel 4 Hartborn looking up at her as she walks to the side of the table opposite him. He looks sad and serious. HARTBORN I thought you might. I couldn't just go back to my hotel room. Panel 5 Director DiLorenzo sitting across for him looking at him very seriously. DIRECTOR You've been sitting here thinking about what happened, huh? You think about how this might shake out? HARTBORN I have. DIRECTOR You know there's going to be an investigation. There may be charges. HARTBORN Yes. Panel 6 The two of them talking. She is leaning forward, and he is sitting rigidly. DIRECTOR I haven't had the pleasure of working with you, Hartborn, so I don't really know what kind of person you are. Pretty soon, though, I'm going to get to know every fact there is to know about Lester Hartborn. DIRECTOR But that starts tomorrow. For right now, off the record, what happened? Page 6 Panel 1 What happened. 6 panels Hartborn looking up to talk to the director. She is leaning forward and tapping the table to make her point. HARTBORN You're not talking about a debriefing, are you? DIRECTOR You came to this office with a sterling reputation, and while you've been here I've heard nothing but praise. So I'm asking, what happened? Panel 2

from off panel. HARTBORN Coil. Before him, The Syndicate had almost no influence in Rapid City. DIRECTOR The Syndicate? was there any evidence supporting that? HARTBORN There's plenty now. Panel 3 The director looking skeptical. DIRECTOR But not before you made the decision to delay the transfer of a federal prisoner? Panel 4 Pull back a bit to see Hartborn sitting there and looking at the director. HARTBORN That prisoner, Icicle, would have been the evidence I could have used to keep The Syndicate from getting a foot hold here. HARTBORN I've seen the cities where they've gone unchecked for too long. Crime, terror, corruption. It's like a disease. Panel 5 Hartborn looking down at his hands which are cradled in his lap. HARTBORN I know Rapid City's got its share of crime, but not like that. Not Syndicate crime. I thought, somehow, I could keep it like that. Pure. I thought I could protect it. Panel 6 Tight on his large, strong-looking, hands. HARTBORN ...stop the disease. keep this city from losing its innocence. But I failed. I made it so much worse. I saw it happening, but I couldn't stop myself. Page 7 Panel 1 2 Icicle in Anger. 5 panels Icicle standing over the hole busted into the ground. She is staring down with seething anger. Her left hand is sheathed in ice and is growing ice spikes. Her speech is very small and quiet. ICICLE

No. PILEDRIVER You telling me you're not mad? Panel 2 Panel tight enough to obscure what exactly the action is, but Icicle is screaming and smashing her spiked hand to the ground. ICICLE NO! It isn't fair! Panel 3 Panel 4 Icicle, unable to counter balance with just one arm, crashing to the floor. Icicle slumping with her face and shoulder to the floor, surrounded by ice shards, sobbing with rage and pounding the floor with her free hand. ICICLE I don't want this. I want you here. I want you here! PILEDRIVER Then I'm the guy that's moved on... Panel 5 Wide panel across the bottom panel, Icicle's speech in in to the last image of the ice the spikes are thick and not of the page. In this caption boxes. Similar column, but now all of glowing.

ICICLE My energy. My life... I can feel it inside the crystals. ICICLE But once they form, and that light goes out, they're just cold ice. I can't feel them at all. Page 8 Panel 1 Icicle's anger part 2. 5 panels Icicle grabbing her stump and grimacing in pain, still writhing on the floor. She can't support herself and is just flopping around. ICICLE Why... Why... Right here! Why! PILEDRIVER You think something's gonna go wrong? Panel 2 Cupping her stump, she rocks back, her eyes wide with the clarity of all consuming pain. ICICLE Nnnnnggg. Panel 3

Icicle breathing heavily as she gets some control of herself again. ICICLE hu... Why...huh...Why you? Piledriver, huh... why did it have to be you? ICICLE You didn't have to... You could have just left. PILEDRIVER But he's right. What am I going to do? Panel 4 Icicle on her knees, pleading and cradling her stump. Ridges of ices are growing on her. ICICLE It hurts. Oh, god, it hurts so bad. PILEDRIVER Your ice. It's glowing. ICICLE You're gone and all I have left is pain. PILEDRIVER It's beautiful Panel 5 Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. Tight shot on the column of ice spikes smashing into a wall, the smaller spikes are cracking, but there is not much damage. ICICLE And that's good. Armor doesn't feel pain. Armor protects you, it's not part of you. ICICLE Not a living part of you. Page 9 Panel 1 Panel 2 Coil on the run. 6 panels Goth girl, Shannon, sound asleep in her meager apartment. Lit by a street light out the window. She is sitting up suddenly, alarmed. We can see more of her room. Some goth decoration, but mostly just the regular stuff that people have. There is a sound coming from the other side of the closed door. SHANNON What? SOUND EFFECT SLAM Panel 3

Her hand grabbing a baseball bat from her bed side. Panel 4 Shannon walking out into her hall, holding the bat out in front of her. There is light coming from a door that is open a crack. SHANNON Hey! There someone in here? Panel 5 Largest panel on the page. Shanon has opened the bathroom door and discovered Coil in there. He has no shirt, just some sparse wires wrapped here and there. He is bruised and bloody.. but not badly injured. He is hunched over and vomiting in the toilet. SHANNON Coil! What are you doing here? Panel 6 Small shot of Coil's face. He is looking back at Shannon. His humanity is gone. There is vomit on his lips and bloody scrapes on his face. His expression is that of a sick, injured, dog. 3 Icicle bargaining. 6 panels Wide shot of Icicle kneeling alone in the empty grocery store where she has been freaking out. It is still quite dark there. The ghostly Piledriver is standing near her, just watching. She is cradling her stump and looking pleadingly upward. ICICLE Why... PILEDRIVER Do you think this will actually work? Panel 2 Close on Icicle's face. She is angry. ICICLE Why didn't I listen to you. You wanted to walk away. PILEDRIVER I told him, I'm done. ICICLE Why couldn't I... PILEDRIVER You can't what? Are you still afraid of going underground? Panel 3 Similar shot, but now she looks worried, manic. ICICLE Why was I so afraid? He wasn't afraid. Why couldn't I just trust him and go with him?

PILEDRIVER I can get you out of there. Safe. If you can trust me. Panel 4 Icicle slumping, defeated and exhausted. ICICLE If... ICICLE If I could have been as brave as he thought I was, he'd still be alive. PILEDRIVER Ok, I'm in, but so is Icicle. Panel 5 Still slumped, but we are pulled back further from her. The ghost is still watching her. ICICLE Why wouldn't he just walk away from me? PILEDRIVER Just one more time, though, and we're out. Panel 6 Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. Still tight, but now really seeing that this ice column has grown where Icicle's right arm used to be. The focus is mainly on the ice column, which is about 12 inches long. She is looking away from the ice-limb, like she can't bear to see it. ICICLE Living parts hurt. And when you lose them, they hurt even more. ICICLE The pain you feel from a living part of you can never equal the constant pain of its absence. Page 11 Panel 1 Coil broods. 6 panels Coil walking into Shanon's living room. It looks like he has showered. He has a large comforter wrapped around him instead of clothing. Shannon is following him defiantly. COIL I need some food. SHANNON No. You can't be here. COIL Yes I can. Get me some food. Panel 2

cupboards, while Shannon stands by with the baseball bat. SHANNON Coil, no. There were federal agents here asking about you. COIL Today? SHANNON A week ago COIL Then who cares? Where do you keep your food? SHANNON I didn't lie to them. I told them that you had been here. COIL This is all garbage. Don't you have anything real? Panel 3 Shot from inside the mostly empty freezer looking out at Coil who has opened it wide, We can see Shannon behind him. COIL There's nothing here. SHANNON I haven't been to the store. Are you even listening to me? Panel 4 Coil turning from the freezer, which he leaves completely ajar, and backhanding through her drying rack which has several plates and glasses on it. He is smashing the hell out of them and yelling at her. COIL What's wrong with you? Panel 5 A shot of Shannon looking surprised and slightly amused. SHANNON Oh. ha-ha. SHANNON Look what you did, idiot. Panel 6 Inset on panel 5. A very tight shot of a long shard of glass slicing into Coil's forearm. It is so close, though, that all we can really see is blood and glass and skin without a clear frame of reference. Who's going to clean this up? 9 panels

Coil holding up his arm and staring at him newest injury. A shard from a tall drinking glass is lodged deep in the meat of his forearm. He is looking at it and it offends him. There is blood, but not a huge amount. Panel 2 Similar shot, but now he is using his other hand to slide the piece of glass out. Blood is now cascading from the open wound down his arm. Shannon is off panel. SHANNON What are you doing? Who's going to clean all this up? Panel 3 Close shot on Coil's arm, and him looking intently at the gushing wound. Thin wires from around his wrist and shoulder are snaking their way toward the gash. COIL Shut up. Panel 4 Panel 5 Panel 6 Panel 7 Panel 8 Panel 9 Very tight shot of the wires beginning to stitch up the wound. Very tight shot on Coil's eyes narrowing in concentration. Another small, gruesome, close-up of the stitching process. Small, tight, reaction shot of Shannon. She is horrified at what she is seeing. Another similar shot, now the stitching is almost done. Coil standing upright, dropping the blanket. Our angle keeps us from seeing anything "adult". He speaks with drunken clarity. COIL I have to leave. Go get my clothes. Page 13 Panel 1 4 Icicle in depression. 6 panels Icicle has walked over to the window where there is some thin light coming through. ICICLE So what did I do? Nothing. ICICLE I was too afraid to walk away when I had you with me. So when I was alone, I went right back to it. PILEDRIVER

Can you just "walk away"? Panel 2 Close on her looking at her dim reflection in the glass. ICICLE You were trying to get me out, and for that I got you killed. PILEDRIVER And then you try it again, and again, and again. Until what? Until you're dead? Panel 3 Icicle stepping away from the glass to face the vast, empty, room. ICICLE Maybe there is no way out of this life. Panel 4 Ghost Piledriver in the foreground, looking at Icicle. ICICLE Except the same way out of every life. PILEDRIVER I'm not free. I'm trapped now, in this cycle, worse than if I never had powers at all. Panel 5 Icicle wobbling slightly as she steps. ICICLE I just want out. PILEDRIVER It's nice to be out here, away from the city. Panel 6 Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. Similar to the last shot of the ice column, but now Icicle is focusing on it and grimacing through pain. Now the core of the column is mostly glowing, all but the ends of the spikes. The column is longer now and bending slightly where an elbow might be. ICICLE Life will cause you pain, but its a small price to pay. ICICLE Pain doesn't kill you. It just hurts. HECTOR So, what do we do now, "Boss"? COIL Hector? What are you doing? Panel 6 Close on Hector. He is smiling slightly. HECTOR You tell me, man. Page 15 Panel 1 Cut the crap. 6 panels Coil walking towards Hector, restraining his anger. COIL Cut the crap. You talk to Shard? HECTOR I did, just a few minutes ago. He still hasn't heard from Charge. Panel 2 Tighter on Hector. HECTOR Have you heard from Charge? It's not like him to go this long without checking in. HECTOR He usually reports a couple of times a day, on you and how you're handling Syndicate affairs here. Panel 3 Hector smiling slightly. HECTOR After today, I would have figured he'd have a lot to say. Panel 4 Coil leaning angrily toward Hector. COIL He reports on you too, you know. And so do I.

You were supposed to be this brilliant strategist, my advisor. I did what you told me. COIL This whole thing was your idea. What happened to you? Panel 6 Shot of the two of them standing on the sidewalk. HECTOR I'm not a strategist, Coil, I'm a tactician. HECTOR Do you know the difference? Page 16 Panel 1 Strategy vs tactics. 6 panels Large shot of Hector and Coil standing near a gated up store front talking. HECTOR Strategy is the big ideas. HECTOR Tactics, however, are my area of expertise. Tactics are the specific methods by which strategy is applied under real-world conditions. HECTOR You set the strategy, Coil, I only helped you make it a reality. Panel 2 Tighter, mostly just their heads. COIL The hospital was your idea. You had to know what would happen. HECTOR No. Too many variables. But I knew The Syndicate would be done with you after that. COIL So you set me up. Panel 3 Close on Hector smiling smugly. Coil's balloon comes from off panel. HECTOR

From my point of view, your only clear plan was to crash and burn. Panel 4 Coil, angry, crowding Hector. COIL You piece of garbage, you're just jealous. So, what are you gonna do now? HECTOR Nothing, Coil, I'm done with you. But I want you to know why this is happening to you. Panel 5 Large panel Hector talking. He is mostly ignoring Coil. HECTOR You think Hector's my name, don't you? It's not. "Team Hector" was the call-sign of my special forces unit. Delta Level. HECTOR I developed tactics, and trained recruits, to handle super-human threats without the aid of special weapons or technology. HECTOR When the unit disbanded, I walked. The others were absorbed into our replacement unit. Panel 6 Coil interrupting, and being interrupted COIL Who gives aHECTOR I know, what's this got to do with you? Page 17 Panel 1 What it has to do with Coil. 5 panels Coil and Hector still in each other's faces. HECTOR To prep for Rapid City, watched your tapes, Coil. ICICLE You were always better than this. ICICLE Through all this wreckage, you kept yourself. PILEDRIVER We're moving fast now. Can you feel it? Panel 2 Similar shot, but closer. Pull back wide to see Icicle standing there alone. There is a faint glow coming from the new crystals forming under the bandages on her stump. ICICLE Good Bye, Piledriver. Panel 5 Wide panel across the bottom of the page. In this panel, Icicle's speech in in caption boxes. The main focus is Icicle's face. She holding up her newly formed, spikeless, glowing, ice-arm. The arm, however, is so deep in the foreground that only the top edge of it can be seen along the bottom of the panel. Her face is well lit by the glow, which is reflected on her tear-soaked cheeks and wet eyes. She is smiling a little bit. ICICLE Accepting that pain... and the fact that it is part of being alive... ICICLE Can make you whole again. Page 19 Panel 1 Day breaks. 6 panels Now it is morning. Hartborn, looking like crap and wearing the same clothes from the night before, is standing at a crosswalk. There are two kids on the other side of the street and a crossing guard holding up a hand to stop traffic for them. Shannon, on her knees, cleaning her kitchen floor. Claw Hammer in his civilian clothes, hunched over a cup of coffee at a convenience store/betting parlor. He's just staring down into the steaming cup. Similar shot, but the angle moved to show Icicle standing by his right shoulder. She has changed clothes and is wearing a bulky hoodie with both arms tucked into the front pocket. As much as her right arm can be hidden, it should be hidden. Claw Hammer is looking at her with surprise. ICICLE Hammer. CLAW HAMMER uh! Didn't think I'd see you again. ICICLE After this, you won't. He is listening intently. ICICLE I'm leaving now. Getting out of here for good. But I want you to do one more thing for me. ICICLE If you see Coil in the next few days, I'd like you to give him a message. Page 20 Panel 1 Icicle on the move. 5 panels Icicle getting onto a Greyhound bus. I will never forgive what you did to me... Icicle in her seat on the bus, she is looking out the window at city streets rolling past. ...but I am sick of throwing my life away to get back at you. Hurting you won't undo what you did. Claw Hammer and Coil in front of the store where Hammer hangs out. Huge signs in the window advertise gambling. WIN WIN WIN, Million Dollar Ticket, and Set For Life. Claw Hammer is handing Icicle's folded paper to Coil. So what's the point? I've already lost too much. COIL You told me you knew where she was. From the POV of the passenger seat, we can see the smashed driver's side window, as well as Coil guiding wires from his finger tips into the ignition. If possible, the crumpled note is in there somewhere. But, if you still think we have something to resolve... In the early afternoon, Icicle is standing outside the trailer/cottage in the middle of a barren and scrubby lake lot. I will be staying at my mother's cottage... In the foreground, Coil is grinning like a predator as he moves through a dry, wintery, forest. In the background, we see his stolen car ditched by the side of the road. on the north end of Sand Lake. Coil emerging into the clearing with the trailer. He is in the foreground, ranting. We can see Icicle across the clearing. She is sitting on the steps to the trailer and sipping a mug of coffee. Looks like she might have two arms. COIL I got your note, little girl. COIL You don't get to walk away. I'm not done with you. Panel 6 View from the step where Icicle is. We are looking past her as she stands up from the step.
