Phased Antenna Array Technologies and Propagation Models for Advanced Wireless Communication Systems
ABSTRACT:
The development of advanced antenna designs and new propagation models that address wireless applications in challenging propagation environments have and will continue to be critically important in the development of future wireless technologies and their phenomenally growing applications in communications, radar, and transportation systems. In spite of the significant advances in these antenna and propagation capabilities, implementation in growing application areas such as cognitive radio, telemedicine and target detection and classification continue to be challenging. In this presentation we describe some of the ongoing research activities at the Hawaii Center for Advanced Communications (HCAC) at the University of Hawaii. In antennas, projects will be described including the integrated phased antenna array system using the Ferroelectric and the Continuous Transverse Stub (CTS) technologies, the hybrid smart antenna system, and the development of an ultra-wideband designs using metamaterial technologies. For the propagation modeling area, a computationally efficient ray tracing approach will be described and the recently developed geospatial resources (e.g. Google images)-based approach for modeling challenging propagation environments will be discussed. In all cases simulation results will be presented and validation with experimental observations will be included whenever available.
