Moment of silence for Marikana at ASA

A moment of silence in respect of the victims in the Marikana massacre was observed by ASA Metals management and employees on Thursday, 23 August. The Human Resources Manager, Mr Moleko Rannona gave a short overview of the tragic events that took the lives of 44 people in the North West Province. The Deputy Chief Executive Officer: Services, Mr Adolph Munyai, said that we have become a violent nation and this could be seen all over the country at universities and during labour disputes. Every employee has the right to strike, and to go to work. He further stated that employers and employees need to take note of what happened and learn from it. The Deputy Chief Executive Officer: Operations, Mr Kleinjan du Toit, stated that every life we loose on a mine, is one too many. He further said that everybody should act responsibly and treat other people the way we want to be treated. Mr du Toit said that we should think in respect of those people who were killed at Marikana, and that we must ensure that history does not repeat itself at ASA Metals. Before the moment of silence was observed, the Employee Relations Superintendent, Mr Godwin Nthane, prayed for the families who were left behind. Dwarsrivier Mine invests in development of local entrepreneurs and suppliers

The exhibition has given them the opportunity to network and interact

Photographs above and below: Mr Trinity Mthiyana, SD Manager of Dwarsrivier Mine with his team Mr Pius Monyela and Mr Themba Sibanyoni with the exhibitors.

Last week Friday, 24 August 2012, Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine participated in the Annual Steelpoort Mining and Technical Exhibition. The Mine sponsored six local SMEs (Small & Medium Enterprises) who specialise in the provision of various goods and services in the mining industry. The local entrepreneurs displayed services and products that are offered by their respective companies which Dwarsrivier utilizes. The reason for the initiative was to give exposure to capable SMEs in the region and to create a platform for the establishment of business linkages between local entrepreneurs and established manufacturers. Feedback received from one of the suppliers (La Fancy Kay) was that the exhibition has given them

the opportunity to network and interact with different mine officials and other stakeholders in different sectors. It also allowed them to explore new products from other suppliers (exhibitors) who attended the exhibition that may be viable for both their manufacturing and service operations. The Dwarsrivier/SME marquee attracted a lot of attention, from visitors who merely wanted to know about the Mine, to potential customers who came to see what is an offer by the SMEs.

To centralise wage negotiation or not?

In South Africas mining industry wage negotiations are done through various channels. The gold and coal mines work through the Chamber of Mines of South Africa who facilitates a centralised bargaining process on behalf of everyone. Platinum mines are however each doing their own wage negotiations. After the recent tragedy at Lonmins Marikana Platinum Mine where striking workers and the police were involved in a bloody clash, pressure is mounting for the platinum industry to also have a collective bargaining structure. According to Northam Platinums CEO Glyn Lewis there are very definite benefits to centralised bargaining. We asked readers how they feel about creating a centralised bargaining structure for the platinum mines and whether they think it could have an influence on future labour disruptions in the industry.

Mr Phillip Manzini said: I think it is good. I was working in the gold mines and moved to the platinum mines. There is a difference. It will be better if they do their wage negotiations like the gold mines. I also hope it will prevent future strikes. With him is Ms Phindiwe Malebe.

Mr Clement Banyini said: I think it will help the mines because all the employees will get the same percentage increase or everyone will strike. On the one hand it is good but on the other hand the platinum mines are more than the gold mines and if they all go on strike what will happen to our economy?

Mnr Charles Ambrose s: Dit sal goed wees as hulle saam onderhandel. Dan val almal mos onder een kombers. Ek dink dit sal stakings in die toekoms verminder. Mr Innocent Zondi said: I think it will work. The platinum mines are too seperate. I was working for a gold mine and we would be able to tell what would happen with the wage negotiations, but with the platinum mines it is difficult to predict. It will have a positive impact if they work through one body.

Mr Mark Geddes said: It would be good to belong to a board or something like the gold guys. It makes it easier for negotiations for everyone as they are working from the same platform. In the end it will boil down to job satisfaction for the employees.

Mr Pakeng Mohlala said: Bargaining councils represent everyone and it is very effective.

Ms Lina Mohlatlole and Ms Kedibone Magagula said: That will be good because it will be fair for everyone - also for the ones that are voiceless. Yes, well want all the platinum mines to join a central structure for wage negotiations.

Mnr William Todd s: As die management van die platinum myne hulle beloftes kan nakom dan sal daar nie stakings ens. wees nie. Hulle moet daar wees soos hulle ges het. As hulle net by die deal hou dan is n sentrale ding nie nodig nie.

Ms Mokgadi Tebele said: No, I dont think it will work if they have one body negotiating on everyones behalf. It will take too much time. Mine people are so impatient - there will be chaos. Left: Ms Hazel Mqhayi said: I would encourage them to join and make one big structure. Ja, Im thinking it can prevent strikes in future.

Mnr Louis Etzebeth s: Dit kan werk ja. Hulle moet die veiligheid van die mense ingedagte hou en saam werk.

Mr Abraham Masango said: I think it will help if they have one negotiating body. With platinum it does not matter - there is one market and one price - regardless of how much they produce. It will be better if they have one bargaining chamber because the market is one.

KFC Mini Cricket - a hit!
Schools from all around Burgersfort gathered for some cricket development through the KFC Mini Cricket programme. Laerskool Burgersfort played host for the days activities. Each school had a team who in a round robin fashion played against all the other teams in attendance. The idea is to teach the children basic cricket skills and assist with the hand-eye-coordination skills. The children each get a specific amount of throws and do both bowling and batting. Boys and girls are involved in the sport. The area in which the children play is also much smaller than a regular cricket pitch. KFC sponsored the kit, hats and much more for the days event.

Primary school learners from all around Burgersfort participated in the KFC Mini Cricket day at Laerskool Burgersfort. For those who were not involved or finished with their games, the jumping castle was irresistable (see photograph below).
