Schedule of Classes and Events

All classes and events require advance registration. Programs are open to all military and civilian personnel and their families unless otherwise noted. For registration and information, call the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 634-3366. The A&FRC now offers childcare payment when attending certain classes indicated by this symbol 30 minutes prior to and after the class at a maximum of $5/hr. Childcare must be by an FCC provider (lists available at A&FRC)

Pre-Deployment 0830 Every Monday at Airman & Family Readiness Post-Deployment 0800 Every Tuesday and Thursday at Bldg 721-B All personnel returning from deployment or about to deploy must attend the briefings. Spouses are highly encouraged to attend. Deployed Family Dining September 5 & 19, 1730-1830 This is a chance for deployed spouses and their families to enjoy a low cost meal from the marshal dining facility. As well as meet and mingle with other spouses. OAEEP Warden Training September 26, 0900-1100. This training is required for newly appointed Okinawa Area Emergency Evacuation Plan (OAEEP). Learn the OAEEP and Safe Haven procedures.

Job Search and Transition


Group Pre-Separation Counseling Every Thursday, 1400-1530 Attendance is mandatory for every military member separating or retiring. Learn about your benefits and entitlements. Pre-separation counseling required prior to attending the Transition Assistance Program Workshop. Spouses are encouraged to attend. Employment 101 September 17, 0900-1100 New to the island and looking for employment? Explore your options and learn new resources to help you find a job on Okinawa. TAP Workshop September 11 - 14, 0800-1630 Learn about all aspects of a job search and your benefits after separation from the military. Military members must complete pre-separation counseling prior to registering for the workshop. Spouses are encouraged to attend. Federal Job Search September 24, 0900-1100 Learn how to navigate the complex USAJOBS hiring process, find jobs and apply for federal service. Also get tips on making your application stand out and how to put together a rewarding resume. Veterans Affairs Briefing September 28, 0900-1200 This is an overview of several VA programs and services available to all veterans and service members. Topics: GI Bill, Medical Care, Home Loans, Vocational Rehabilitation, Disability, and VGLI.

Adapting to Life in Japan


Basic Japanese Language (Step 1) September 4 - 27, 1730-1900 Tuesdays and Thursdays This is a 4 week language class focusing on proficiency of speech and practical application. There is a $27.00 text book Japanese for Busy People which can be purchased from the instructor or Amazon.com. Washi Craft September 10, 1000-1130 Learn to make decorative items with traditional Japanese craft paper. This months class will make a Japanese style picture frame. Japanese for Busy People September 4-6, 1200-1300 This is a 3day lunchtime session for those wanting to learn useful words and phrases for daily living. Kimono Wearing September 14 0900-1100 Learn about the rich history of the Japanese kimono and learn how to wear this traditional style of dress. Bring a camera to take photographs. Newcomers Island Excursion September 21, 1000-1500 Departs from Schilling Community Center Explore the history, culture and customs of Okinawa on this FREE excursion to the Onna Glass Factory, Ryukyu Mura, Zakimi Castle, Yomitan Pottery Village and more. Bring a snack for lunch or yen for a light Japanese lunch and purchasing souvenirs. Registration required. Open to all ages. Sanshin for Beginners Every Thursday, 1700-1800 Learn a traditional Ryukyu song on the Sanshin, an Okinawan 3-string instrument. Participants can start at any time; eight classes per session.

Newcomers Orientation Every Wednesday, 0800-1545 Schilling Community Center Newcomers will receive a welcome by the 18th Wing Commander, great information for recent arrivals, mandatory military briefings, and completion of medical and TMO in-processing. Spouses are welcome to attend. Sponsorship Training September 6, 0900-1045 This class is mandatory for all first time sponsors. Participants will learn the latest policies and procedures on Kadena's sponsorship program. Sponsor packages for new service members are available upon request. Plan My Move September 20, 0900-1130 Speakers from Finance, Traffic Management, Housing, Lodging, AMC Terminal, Tri-care, Medical, and Veterinary Services. Come to answer questions to prepare you for your PCS move. Space-A Travel Workshop September 24, 1200-1300 This workshop is designed to prepare you for Space-A travel.

Financial Foundations Pt. 1
September 4, 0830-1200 Learn how to select a financial institution and create and establish a working budget to manage savings, checking and reduce debt based on individual goals. (Bring detailed LES, bank investment reports, credit card statements, and a wireless laptop). First Time Home Buyer Workshop September 7, 0800-1200 This class teaches you how to use a Realtor, determine which financing programs are best for you, how to shop and qualify for a loan, how to assess a homes value and what benefits home ownership really offers. This class is essential for all first-time home purchasers or individuals seeking to expand their knowledge of the home buying process.

Bundles for Babies September 25, 0900-1130 Financial planning, birth registration, Tri-care and Childcare information, and more for expectant parents. Military members receive a gift package, valued at $75. Japanese Spouses BiCultural Workshop September 11, 1300-1500 Japanese participants can learn American and military cultural. Come and learn how to network on base.

Relocation Assistance
Loan Locker Monday-Friday, 0900-1700 Visit the Kadena Loan Locker to borrow household items. Available items are dishes, microwaves, cookware and other household items to use while you are arriving or departing. Located in building 220. Please provide a copy of your PCS orders.
