Pastors Corner - Ready for Judgment?

I was given a book to read recently that cause me to do some heart searching. I dont know if I follow the book with all its conclusions but I do know that at the heart of the matter it is right. The main point of the thesis in the book is the coming judgment on a country [ie. The U.S.] that had followed God and now is full of apostasy [turning from the truth God]. The author drew a continuum from Isaiah 9.10 to present day America. Now, I wont go into all the details and story line of the book but the main thought is there is an arrogance found in America similar to that found in the northern kingdom of Israel that we read in Isaiah 9.10. That arrogance is this: instead of humbling itself after an attack and returning to God [the attack came from and enemy, allowed by God, as warning of greater judgment] the cry was to build bigger and stronger than before-relying on the strength of the nation instead of on God. And, as we know throughout Scripture, that recipe is the making of great calamity! Needless-to-say, at the end of the book the one character turns to the other and says, Are you ready for judgment? Of course, thinking they were speaking of nations, not individuals, the other character was taken off guard by the question. Therefore, the first character has to logically take the other through the journey of individual rebellion and apostasy to show that it is in our own heart-the need for a Savior, who is Christ Jesus [Gods love revealed and mans sacrifice made]. Ask yourself this question, truly, Am I ready for judgment? Have I humbled myself and now rely on Jesus or do I plan on standing before a righteous and holy God on my own terms? Be honest, often we plan on standing on what we think we are doing right. Yah, Jesus saved me back when, but Ive been doing pretty good myself as of late! Beware of arroganceread Isaiah 9.10. Let us humble ourselves and pray. God is just and will forgive us our sin. In Christ, Pastor Matt

If I only had this as my guideif all I had was the Bibleand I was to read this book and then start a church, what would it look like? Would it look like the thing that weve built here and all refer to as church? Or would it look radically different ? -Francis Chan Over the next few months (every other Sunday night, or so check on church calendar) we will be looking at the basics of church. Using Francis Chans videos to prompt our thoughts and discussions, we will be searching Scripture to challenge us to reclaim the church as Scripture describes it to be.
