2012 ACSI is an action-learning camp addressing societal concerns in a new and highly eec- tive manner: it initiates a continuing proc- ess empowering people and organizations to think and act in concert, creating shared understanding of how opportunities for societal innovation emerge, and how to use them constructively in business and re- search. At the same time participants ap- ply innovation skills to address challenging real-life issues. v.0.9 / 27 Aug 2012 acsi.aalto. CASE : INNOVATIVENESS Region Skne is Swedens third most important region when it comes to growth, population and educa- tion; it is responsible for health care (with 32 000 employees and a budget of 30 billion euros), develop- ment, culture and public transportation. Furthermore, Region Skne (and the City of Malm) is one of the most innovative regions within the OECD. With its International Innovation Strategy, adopted in 2011 and to be implemented during 2013-2020, Skne will position itself as one of the top innovation regions in Europe, with a thriving innovation culture. With all its impressive ambitions and plans, many challenges remain. This case focus will be on what is needed to enable this transformation: - what socletal changes are needed today to make thls happen! - what are the lmpllcatlons for cltlzens, on a polltlcal level, for the soclal structure, and for soclety as a whole! - How can the reglon deal wlth aspects of follow-up on thls year's ldeas and suggestlons, wlth lssues of ownership; and issues of how to present this on a political level (in order to obtain political go ahead")! The main challenge now is to get an understanding of what innovation culture is, what constitutes it, how to create conditions to allow it happen and to endure. How can all the players ln the reglon be part of value creatlon! what are the connectlons between lnno- vatlveness and lncluslveness, and how can they then be enhanced! what are the connectlons between lnnovatlon culture, lncluslveness, and attractlveness! Key questions for the case participants are: - How can cltles best support people ln developlng thelr own lnnovatlve splrlt! what klnd of lnnova- tiveness is needed to make cities attractive, innovative places, where collaboration, interaction and an entrepreneurlal mlnd-set nourlsh! - How can cltles encourage lnnovatlveness - ln practlcal matters, ln consumptlon patterns, worklng hab- lts, and dally llfe! And what does thls mean for cltlzens of these open, servlce-drlven, entrepreneurlal and responslve cltles! - what opportunltles does thls new lnnovatlon culture create for socletal lnnovatlon and an lncluslve, all- pervaslve lnnovatlon economy! These are some of the issues, challenges, and questions that will be addressed at ACSI 2012, with the ul- timate aim of understanding of what needs to take place for Skne to become the world class innovation region it aspires to be, attracting talent from all over the world. Case owner is Region Skne and the City of Malm, represented this week by Peter Sannestad. Open Political Leadership actively supporting grassroots initiatives Network of Ideas THE IDEATOR Network of Stakeholders & Spaces PEER INNOVATION NETWORK (PIN) + ? ! MANIFEST OF THE INNOVATIVE SOCIETY Innovation is creating new value out of old and new. Innovation turns ideas into action. We believe the culture of innovation is the mind-set of the future and should be a core value in society. This mind-set is characterised by openness, spontaneous connections and sharing ideas. Based on the example of Skane we propose globally adaptable solutions for the society. Idea sharing, peer innovative networks, and spatial links together have a potential to create societal innovation.
WE ARE IN 2030! In 2030 we are not afraid of failing and learning from our mistakes. Our work is neither a place nor time. Our work is a free choice. We work together in networks and communities having fun, sharing experience, ideas and inspiration. Our children are a source of innovation. They learn in an informal way, cultivating creativity and shaping their education. We create and shape the world as it shapes us. BRAINSTORMING and ACTION PLAN THOUGHT PROCESS RESULTS / TOOLS The PIN Peer Innovative Network Hierarchic society is slow to move and resistance to change is in its boundaries that are the 2012 structures. In 2030 there are no societal power ratios between citizens. The hierarchy is lateral and the complex- ity of connections only strengthen the society and its movements. People move and shape the society eortlessly and quickly. Decisions leading to actions are carried out even by individuals but shape the society only by support. There is seamless cooperation between schools, workplaces, corporations and governments that together create Peer Innovation Network. Dierent institutions are merely dierent modes of operation under the same societal aim. Each citizen can give an input, idea and innovation to the PIN-society and the peer support is manifested by ac- tion. The PIN promotes the idea that every one is a leverage point of society and that will ease the connection between dlnerent multl-level actors - lt wlll brlng the balance to so- cietal positioning. Since issues at hands of PIN individuals are societal, the aims are under common interests. Caring enough about these issues will create ripple eect around separate individuals and connect the network to be an ul- timate social sphere, where the six decrees of separation will be non-existing. INNOVATION OUTCOME 3 INNOVATION OUTCOME 2 INNOVATION OUTCOME 1 Network of Ideas THE IDEATOR Network of Stakeholders & Spaces PEER INNOVATION NETWORK (PIN) ? ! * * * What is a PIN? A PIN is the rst, practical step that will lead to a society where innovation is a core value. In a peer inno- vative network people can nd other people, with additional ideas, get together to share ideas, discover common interests, and they co-create and add value to society. In 2030 getting value out of an idea is easy. Innovation is happening everywhere. Ideas that strengthen each other, are connected in an intuitive way and the right people and qualities are brought together to create value out of ideas. People actually know more than they think they know! The PIN-concept enables the Skane region actors to see the critical mass and to then act upon it.
How does it work? what are the steps to take to get value out of an ldea!
Issue -> idea A P|N starts wlth wantlng to solve an lssue, or wlth a great ldea you would llke to act on - or [ust leave lt to the open transparent knowledge capita of you community and society. Idea -> connecting ideas Ideator can be fed with suggestions, beginnings of an idea and open questions. The network activates itself whenever there is critical mass around an idea in a particular region or around a particular issue. Connecting ideas -> stakeholders when ldeas are connected around an lssue, lt's lmportant to know who are the stakeholders - to get the right people around the planning and action. The PIN connects these dierent people. Not only the usual suspects, but also the uncommon ones to form uncommon pairs. We especially want to bring children into the dlscusslon and use thelr natural ablllty of stochastlc thlnklng - to see more optlons than the usual ones. Education can discourage the open minds of children. By giving children an important role in this PIN, their innovative minds are encouraged and stimulated and education becomes mutually benecial in direct way. Innovation is already a core value of children by understanding their possibilities and value in society. These children are adults in 2030, and incorporating dierent individuals from all ages, levels and areas of society is the natural way for them to see the world. That is why we call this a PEER innovative network. Lverybody ls consldered as a peer: a chlld, an adult, a cltlzen, a declslon maker, a student, a worker, etc. - basically, in us as human beings, there often lies the two opposites we lack to be able to connect. the INNOVATION PROCESS Network of Ideas THE IDEATOR Network of Actors & Spaces PEER INNOVATION NETWORK (PIN) THE INNOVATION OUTCOMES ? ! * VALUE ADDITION INNOVATION ISSUE IDEA CONNECTING IDEAS STAKEHOLDERS ACTION PLAN GOES AS PLANNED GOES DIFFERENTLY ? ! * DIABETES CASE : Actors -> action plan All the actors work together to make an action plan. When they are all involved, they can use each others expertise and skills to co-create an action plan out of an idea. The PIN is to be thought as scal and digital, but to really exist in the connections. Action plan -> value addition When realizing the plan, dierent things can happen. A plan can work out the way it was planned or it can work dierent as planned. Unexpected things can happen, that make the action plan even work better, but it can also produce an unwanted result. In a PIN, the less expected is seen as a valuable result too. You learn from it, and you try again until the issue worked upon has found its resolution. Both results are valued ln the eyes of soclety and a deep understandlng that to socletal lssues, there are no rlght answers - but several possible answers. Value addition -> innovation Finding value and use for an idea will turn an idea into innovation. Ideas are valued as seeds of change and movement, but also treated as [ust a mass ln a matrlx untll they actlvely nd the need they lntend to solve. Innovation -> issue All societal innovations, that create movement in the society will cause new issues, ideas, movements and innovations to rise. Building a society is a never ending task, but well worth working with and for. Innovation is accelerated with- out the use of tools. Smartphones are made redundant. That is in 2030. Small steps lead us to utopia. Thats why we have developed the idea of the ideator for now. What is it? The ideator is a location based crowdsourcing game that allows people to get rid of their ideas and share them with others. It is an free online app that builds on the belief that innovation happens everywhere and is accelerated by sharing. People can post their ideas, or add to the ideas of others. People can also post a challenge to generate ideas. Who could use it? Everybody. Young and old. Individuals and companies. Around the globe. Why would I use it? Because it is fun. Because you realize that your ideas can be valuable for others. Because you want to bring your ideas into action and realize that others can help you rene your ideas and help you bring your ideas into action. Because you are looking for inspiration or want to know what others people come up with in your living and working environment. How does it work? People send their ideas to an online application and tag their geographical location on a map. Other peo- ple can see on the map where people had their ideas, what their ideas are and can add a suggestion to rene the idea. Or people can use the ideas of others to bring into action themselves. Why develop it? Because it is a great tool to make innovation happen. Because it is a simple tool to make people more aware of their potential to create value out of their ideas and those of others. Because it is a valuable tool to promote cities or regions. What is the risk of this? There is a risk that it fails. Failure is the risk of any innovation and luckily so. Because failure is nothing but a new opportunity to learn and improve. There is a chance that not all ideas posted will be tapped in to by others. But the ideas will remain and at one point someone may nd inspiration in it.
