Chapter 2. Compatibility issues with earlier versions

Important: v The version of IBM Systems Director Server must always be the same as or later than the version of any Common Agent or Platform Agent that is installed on the managed systems. For example, you must install and use IBM Systems Director Server 6.2.1 to manage Common Agent 6.2.1 that is installed on managed systems, or you must install and use IBM Systems Director Server 6.2.1 to manage Platform Agent 6.2.1 that is installed on managed systems. v IBM Systems Director version 6.1 or later is not compatible with any versions of IBM Director Server extensions, IBM Director Console extensions, or IBM Director Agent extensions that are supported by IBM Director version 5.20.x or earlier. Therefore, you must first uninstall those extensions before you install or upgrade an IBM Systems Director component from version 5.20.x to version 6.1.x or 6.2.x. For detailed information, see What's new in version 6.2.0. v If you must run a version of IBM Director or IBM Systems Director that is older than the version that is currently installed, you cannot update or migrate to it. You must instead uninstall your current version and then install the older version. See the following table for a complete listing of previous agent versions that are compatible with and can be managed by IBM Systems Director Server or 6.2.x.

Information to provide to the IBM Technical Support Center or IBM Systems Director customer forum
When looking for assistance, either from IBM Technical Support Center or in the IBM Systems Director customer forum, there is some basic information that you should provide.

System x, BladeCenter, and x86-based system information

Before you contact IBM for assistance, or append to the customer forum, you should gather the following information for the affected systems. Note: Frequently, IBM uses information and logs generated by the Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) program to resolve problems. DSA is available from the Systems Management Web page at www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/ systems_management/. v The machine types of all the affected systems. v The operating system. v The BIOS and firmware version levels of the affected systems. If you do not know this information, you can use Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) to gather the information for you. v Whether the failure is intermittent or persistent. v The last time the feature or function worked. v Any exceptions or error messages that occur. v The version of IBM Systems Director that is installed. Also note whether it is a new installation or an upgrade installation. If it is an upgrade installation, note from which version of IBM Systems Director you upgraded. v The error and trace logs that are located in the install_root/lwi/logs directory, where install_root is the root directory of your IBM Systems Director installation. Note that this path uses the backslash (\) to delimit the directory; depending on the system that you are using, you might be required to enter the path using the forward slash (/). v If it is an installation problem, the install logs that are located in the standard system directories and the install_root/logs directory, where install_root is the root directory of your IBM Systems Director installation. Note that this path uses the backslash (\) to delimit the directory; depending on the system that you are using, you might be required to enter the path using the forward slash (/). The following table contains examples of the install logs that are located in the standard system directories.
