Senior citizens whose lives depend on their saved earnings are in crisis because of the economy but somehow, because theres a Democrat in the White House, the media says nothing. In a concise and brilliant column (http://www.usatoday.com /news/opinion/forum/story/2012-08-29/seniors-obamarepublicans-media/57410976/1) in USA Today, Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit.com delineates how shockingly bad the situation is for seniors.
Reynolds starts by noting that the basic elements of seniors savings: "...interest rates on bonds, CDs and money market accounts are at historic lows. Money markets are down 0.35% and CDs are 0.90%. Stocks are lower than they were five years ago." The University of Tennessee law professor then posits this: Years ago, when seniors could accrue 5% on their savings, a $360,000 portfolio of CDs would garner $18,000 a year in interest, which amounted to $1500 a month. Combined with a Social Seurity payment that was roughly equivalent, the total would be $36,000 a year, $3,000 a month. But in the current economy, that 5% becomes 0.9%, which means instead of receiving $18,000 a year, the total becomes $3,240 per year, or about $270 a month. Add the same $1,500 a month from Social Security, and the senior is now living on a mere $1,770 a month just $21,240 a year. That's almost cutting their income in half. Reynolds notes that the Federal Reserve's low interest rates are designed to bail out overextended banks and the borrowers who owe them money, including the U.S. Treasury. But the low interest rates hurt seniors; they steal from seniors in order to pay off the banks

and the borrowers. Seniors incomes are down, and to make matters even worse, costs are increasing markedly. Gas is double what it cost when Obama was inaugurated, ground beef is now more than $3 a pound for the first time ever, and the summer drought is only going to make matters harsher. Meanwhile, the media parrots the same eternal Democrat talking points that "Republicans dont care about the elderly." Reynolds is absolutely correct; the media should be called out for tacitly absolving Obama for ruining the lives of the elderly.

Add in there that Democrats are content let Medicare continue to be insolvent and even to raid $716 Billion from Medicare to pay for Obamacare, while Conservatives like Paul Ryan are proposing ways to save it by making it a solvent, self-sustaining program over time, and the reasons for seniors to vote for Mitt Romney become very clear.

Exactly. This is what I have been saying to everyone that is willing to listen. The so-called 1% may be comprised of the RETIREES who have worked and scrimped so they could be self sufficient. Now, with interest rates at less than 1% and the President's THREAT to increase the taxation on dividends, interest, etc., the income that those who had PLANNED their retirements are in tremendous jeopardy. The scenario noted in the above is optimistic at best. I believe that the President is requesting taxation on interest and dividends. Imagine that the interest and dividend of $3240 was taxed at another 24-28% as per the President's plans, then the $3240 would be down to $2200-2400. That is just plain insane and rude to the GREATEST GENERATION (as per Mr. Hanks). Yes, OMG.

The you struggle to pay drug costs since his revision of Prescription D is a joke, add to that supplement premiuns that have double and they are just waiting to see if Obama is reelected to hit us another increase. I was already notified by mine that they have the RIGHT to increase me two more times prior to Jan 2013 and then again. Obama has to go and it is sick the media pays no attention to us. I was depending on the interest on my savings to pay my property taxes so this puts me at risk of losing my home that is paid for.....taxes, taxes and more taxes.

I am glad someone confronted this issue. Us seniors saved and behaved but the Fed is taking us to the cleaners. The only way we can survive and not take government assistance is to lower our standard of living. Maybe the federal government can put all the seniors on reservations just like what they did to the Indians. Anybody got a bottle of whiskey?

It's no wonder our Senior Citizens would feel the full-force brunt of this bad economy. Everything costs way more than it did even 2 years ago and for people on a fixed income, that means they are forced into deciding to pay the utilities or buy what little food they can afford. It sickens me that the democrats are considered the party of "caring" but the only thing I can see they care about are voting blocks they can con into supporting them. they love to trot out every "disadvantaged" group and minorities when it benefits them at the ballot box but the minute there is evidence that their horrible economic policies are hurting the very people they purport to "care" for, the complicit media is silent. And we wonder why we're in the boat we're in?

The context was self-explanatory. There was really no picking and choosing. If I had done that, I would have point to the continued decline that extended a couple months into 2009, when it dropped into the 6,000's. And THEN came roaring back. It would have made my numbers look even better. Regardless of when you choose to look at the numbers, the fact remains that the DJIA is doing great and that fact flies in the face of the narrative that Republicans want.

Devolved, the Dow is the only thing that is not in decline, and it has more to do with the success of companies in global markets than anything Obama has done. Obama's war on business through opressive regulations and Bernake's manipulation of fiscal policy have led to massive, unprecedented debt, continual high unemployment and a future of hyperinflation and a lower standard of living which mirrors France.

Don't worry seniors, if ObamaCare ever kicks in, you won't be around long enough to require any retirement savings. Hope your kids don't have to go into debt to bury you. And many seniors thought that AARP (major proponent of ObamaCare) was there to help you.

Seniors (me) are an ENDANGERED species under ObamaCare and the IPAB board is a tool to cull the herd, with its age based formula that refuses treatment to older American's and saves the govt SS $ when they pass on. See the gory details here at: http://dailycaller.com/2012/07... The IPAB has15 full-time members, and only a minority of them can be health care providers. We had several jobs come available via attrition over the past year, and relatively few people who actually qualified for them. It was a technical professional position requiring at least five years of experience. In each instance, we were bombarded by applications from seniors who were qualified, but were supposed to be enjoying their retirement. These people had resumes that were 600-pound gorillas, each and every one, and each and every one was not able to survive in retirement from their PROFESSIONAL careers. If retirees from a technical profession are having problems with retirement, I can't imagine what it's like for those further down on the food chain. :( People, this broke my heart. Interviewing people for an open position used to be a joy for me, but the fact that we could not give every one of those people a job to help them gave me the shakes for weeks afterward. I am 63. I don't think I'm going to be able to retire if Obama is put back in. I've already seen what it's done to others. And if I don't retire, some college graduate with a couple of years of experience is not going to get the move-up job to replace me, which means that some other college graduate isn't going to get the job that person would vacate, and some other college graduate isn't going to get the entry-level position that person would vacate... S%it rolls downhill...

Yes, Obama's policies have made this situation as bad as it is, but nobody is going to fix it any time soon. If interest rates go back to where they should be, then interest on the National Debt will consume a quarter to a third of the Federal budget. This is part of the problem with letting the government both borrow money and set the market's interest rates.

As a baby boomer on the cusp of Social Security and Medicare I ask this. The government took the money for these programs from my paycheck every week for over 40 years. The different administrations of both parties continuously raided those funds to support their own causes. Those administrations also expanded those programs to include many who never contributed anything or even worked in this country. There are people who never worked a day in their life in this country benefiting from these programs and now after 40 years or more of taking my money you tell me there is not anything for me. These programs did not become financial disasters overnight. Baby boomers such as myself did not just appear out of thin air. We were the backbone of american productivity and we are not looking for anything more than what we were promised.Shame on us for not holding politicians feet to the fire years ago. Shame on those in power to treat us like some undeserving citizens looking for a handout. My advice to the young people working today would be to watch those in power very carefully, hold them accountable. Someday you younger Americans will be standing in the same shoes we wear today.

Try and get a new doctor if you are on Medicare - your own doctor will probably continue treating you, but if you relocate after retirement you may have a big problem getting a primary doctor.

In all honesty, Dubya and his Federal Reserve started the warfare against the elderly. I railed against the Fed's policy of easy money when my parents were still living and having to liquidate their savings in order to pay for their care, because Greenspan/Bernanke drove interest rates to near zero. Where Obama has intensified the war is in his destruction of Medicare in favor of Medicaid.

The democrats LOVE seniors, as long as they can be used/exploited/scared in order to advance their agenda. My current savings account is at .1% right now. What's your at?
