1. Name the functions of the following Protocols and the layer of the OSI Model they function at: HTML Located in the presentation layer. HTML is the language that a web browser reads web documents in. FTP FTP, or File Transfer Protocol is found in the application layer of the OSI model. HTTP HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is found in the application layer. Telnet Telnet is used on the internet or LANs to provide a bidirectional interactive text-oriented communication facility using a virtual terminal connection. SMB SMB, which stands for Server Message Block, is a protocol for sharing files, printers, and serial ports between computers. SMB is found in the application layer. DNS DNS, which stands for Domain Name System, is a naming system for any device on a private network or the internet. DNS is located in the application layer. SSH SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that allows for secure data communication. SSH is located in the application layer. 2. Two Forms of Application Software are? Most programs on a computer are application software. Some are music players, some are video players, some create text documents, and some create web pages. 3. How does the application layer process client request for services? By using the OSI model to interpret input. 4. Define Daemon? What are they used for/with? A daemon is a process that runs in the background without any user input. Daemons are used with application software to ensure that it runs properly, but it does not require the user to make any additional actions. 5. What does the following Acronyms stand for and how do they work? RFC RFC stands for Request for Comments. A document submitted to the IETF. If the document gains enough interest, it becomes an internet standard. MTA MTA stands for Message Transfer Agent. MTA is software that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another using client-server application architecture. MDA MDA stands for Mail Delivery Agent. MDA is

software that delivers email to the recipients mailbox. MUA MUA stands for Mail User Agent. It is used to access and manage a users email. SMTP SMPT stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is used to transfer electronic mail

across internet protocol networks. POP POP stands for Post Office Protocol. It is used to retrieve email from a remote server via a TCP/IP connection. HELO Short for hello. A command used in SMTP. EHLO Another command used in SMTP.

6. What do GET, POST and PUT do? GET requests a web page from a server. POST submits data to be processed. PUT uploads a representation of the specified source. 7. Name the functions of the Application Layer. The application layer contains all of the protocols for process-to-process communications across an IP. 8. Name the characteristics of clients in a data network. 9. What port #s are defaults for the following? HTTP TCP UDP What is port 21, 23, used for? 10.What are the ports numbers reserved for services that are commonly used by applications that run on servers? 11.How do the following commands work? Ping Pong Push Ipconfig/all Ipconfig/displaydns 12.What protocols are used to control the transfer of web resources from a web server to a client browser?
