Importance of Sanitizers As per reports, about 80% of infectious diseases are spread by hand contact, which is a matter of concern.

One has million of germs on his/her hand even when hands look clean. Most of the germs are not harmful however; some of them can cause flue, common cold and diarrhea. Apart from germs getting transferred from a human, they can also enter the body when one comes in contact of any hard surface Therefore, it is important to use sanitizers regularly through out the day. Doctors and medical experts advice to use sanitizers and gels in the following situations: Before eating food/cooking After using the toilet During travel After coughing/sneezing Before touching infants Before & after changing baby''s diaper. Before & after caring for an ill person. Before and after contact with pets. After contact with surfaces in public places. After smoking Product A hand sanitizer or hand antiseptic is a supplement or alternative to hand washing with soap and water. Various preparations are available, including gel, foam, and liquid solutions. The active ingredient in hand sanitizers may be isopropanol, ethanol, n-propanol, or povidone-iodine. Inactive ingredients in alcohol rubs typically include a thickening agent such as polyacrylic acid for alcohol gels, humectants such as glycerin for liquid rubs, propylene glycol, and essential oils of plants. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are more effective at killing germs than soaps and do not dry out hands as much.[2] Popular alcohol rub brands include Purell, Germ-X, IC Gel, Hygel, Deb, Labo, Aqium, Avant, GermOut, and Aquawet. Lysol, and Method Products also produce popular alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Ethyl or (ethanol) has the formula C2H5OH and is suitable for consumption by humans, isopropyl alcohol (C3H8O) is an isomer of propanol with the OH alcohol functional group on the second carbon as opposed to at the end of the chain as normal, whats marketed as isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in America actually contains no isopropyl alcohol as far as I know, just denatured ethanol. Isopropyl alcohol is a skin irritant and is metabolized to acetone in the body, it is about twice as toxic as ethanol. Ethyl alcohol is C2H6O, consisting of a two carbon atoms bound together as well as a number of hydrogen atoms. One of them bound to an OH group. Isopropyl alcohol is C3H8O consisting of a 3-carbon. In the UK the equivalent skin preparation is surgical spirit which is always an ethyl alcohol-isopropyl alcohol mixture The term "rubbing alcohol" has become a general non-specific term for either isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) or ethyl alcohol (ethanol) rubbing-alcohol products. It is widely believed that 99% isopropyl alcohol provides the greatest reduction in bacterial count; however, this is incorrect as there does not appear to be significant differences beyond a 60% concentration.[

Difference of Ethyl and Isopropyl alcohol: Ethanol and isopropanol are two different chemicals but with similar physical properties. They both appear as colorless liquids with strong distinguishable odors. It burns with a smokeless blue flame that is not always visible in normal light. Both Ethyl and Isopropyl alcohol is the main ingredient in rubbing alcohol but Ethyl is better when used in greater quantity for a longer time because it is milder to the skin while isopropyl alcohol is better for wounds because it is more poisonous to germs. When ethyl alcohol is produced synthetically it cannot be use in beverages but is frequently used as ingredient in hand sanitizers and perfumes. Other uses of Isoprophyl alcohol: As ingredient in the household products, including windshield washer fluids and nail-polish remover. Isopropyl alcohol removes dirt, and fingerprints from cell phones and computer screen, it is also effective at removing residual glue from some sticky labels. It can also be used to remove stains from most fabrics, wood, etc. Where is it made? Isopropyl alcohol is produced by combining water and propylene gas. It shares many properties with synthetic ethyl alcohol. Conversely, isopropyl alcohol is not quite as versatile. It is primarily used as the active ingredient in rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizers. Both ethyl alcohol and isopropyl have antiseptic properties, but isopropyl is cheaper to produce, so it is used more commercially As antiseptics, both alcohols perform equally well. Alcohol has the ability to break down the outer membrane of many bacterias, killing them. For this reason, alcohol is the primary ingredient in hand sanitizers and other aseptic products used in hospitals and medical Rubbing alcohol is simply a home antiseptic that has seventy percent isopropyl alcohol. Its used to disinfect hands and cleanse wounds when theres no soap and water. Many manufacturers produce home decontaminants that contains ethyl alcohol and not isopropyl. Ethyl alcohol can be found in alcoholic beverages and is actually less harmful as compared to the other. Isopropyl alcohol should not be taken in since it is actually a lot more harmful as compared to ethyl alcohol (ethanol). The alcohols such as ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, are used for disinfection and antiseptic purposes.1 Ethyl alcohol is widely used as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Like many chemical disinfectants, alcohols are generally considered to be nonspecific antimicrobials because of a multiplicity of toxic effect mechanisms. The predominant mode of action appears to stem from protein coagulation/denaturation. Associated disruptions of cytoplasmic integrity, cell lysis, and interference with cellular metabolism have been reported. Alcohol-induced coagulation of protein occurs at the cell wall, the cytoplasmic membrane and among the various plasma proteins. Coagulation of enzymatic proteins leads to loss of cellular functions. Protein coagulation occurs within concentration limits around an optimum alcohol level. In the absence of water, proteins are not denatured as readily as when water is present.2 This is the reason why absolute alcohol is less bactericidal than mixtures of alcohol and water. Isopropyl alcohol may cause vasodilatation of the skin when it is used on the skin before injection.3,4 Concentrations between 60 and 95 % are bactericidal and a 70% solution is usually employed for the disinfection of skin, clean instruments
