DME-7000

The Sony DME Digital Multi Effects continues to earn a well-respected reputation in post and production applications because of its ease of use, innovative feature sets, high image quality, and field-tested reliability. A perfect companion with the powerful Sony line of production switchers and effects editor, the DME is a great addition to an existing room or a new facility. Extending the Sony DME product line, the latest addition, the DME-7000 - provides new levels of performance in both eye-catching features and improved image processing. The DME-7000 builds on the DME-3000 with its functional and attractive graphics user interface and effects capability which have met the demands of uncompromising video artist around the world.

The DME-7000 provides additional tools which the demanding creative video professionals may call on every day. Tools like the 3D shadow to add even more realism to the powerful lighting tools, Digital SKETCH for creative renderings in real time, new Duality mode multiplies the power of a single channel, Brick effects for a cube or slab in a single channel, and the new ChromAlloy effects. And the many tools are easily accessed through an attractive and nimble graphic user interface which permits the operator to control many functions with a mouse, track ball, or key pad entry. Digital technology is putting greater demands on image quality for digital multi effects systems. Sony's DME-7000 meets this challenge with the highest level of interpolation and filtering available in a real time video effects system. The 8x8 Multi-Point Interpolation insures an accurate translation of pixels when compressing or expanding. And the 33x33-Point, Pixel-Based Filtering virtually eliminates artifacts associated with image manipulation artifacts which can not be tolerated in the almost transparent digital recording systems like Digital BETACAM. And when it comes to integration, the DME products let you have it your way. Control can be fully integrated with the new sub control panels offered for the powerful line of Sony DVS-7000 Series switchers. If you choose to use the dedicated DME panel you will still have powerful features like DME-LINK transition, Keyframe-LINK effects, and Processed Key. These features simplify digital effects manipulation and control with DVS switchers to a few button strokes. With previously unachievable levels of picture quality, effects creativity and system operability, the DME-7000 facilitates a no-compromise approach to every post production and live broadcast operation.

Main Features
u Unprecedented Picture Quality
The DME-7000 employs 4:2:2:4 processing with 10-bit resolution for picture manipulation which allows direct signal interface with Sony 10-bit digital switchers. In addition to this high quality video processing, two state-of-the-art technologies have been developed to further enhance the picture quality of the DME-7000. Multi-Point Interpolation Interpolation techniques directly affect the quality of digital video effects and this is an area of development in which the Sony DME design team have been particularly innovative. The DME-7000 calculates an interpolated pixel from the surrounding 8 x 8 pixel data. This remarkable technology, together with adaptive field-frame interpolation, provides incredibly clean effects.

Pixel-Based Anti-Alias Filter Filtering technology is another important contributor element to clean picture generation. The DME-7000 can optionally incorporate a new pixelbased anti-aliasing filter. This filter calculates the optimum filtering parameters for each pixel according to its position, greatly contributing to reduction of blur and aliasing noise over the entire video screen.

while Drawing gives the picture the appearance of a drawing design. The Relief and Enhanced Edge effects allow various picturesque motifs to the edges of an image in the picture. The Beveled Edge effect adds a frame around a cropped picture while the Color Grabber function grabs a color from any part of the input video and copies it to create color mattes for backgrounds, borders and drop shadows. Duality TM Effect The Duality effect enables the DME-7000 system to simultaneously handle two live video sources within a single channel of DME. With the BKDM-7020/7060/7070 boards installed in the DME-7000, a sub-DME channel is provided which allows 3D linear transformations, such as sizing and rotation. The main channel and the sub-channel can be independently controlled, as well as allowing a linked operation for easy keyframe creations such as 3D-symmetry and duplicate manipulations.

u Exciting New Visual Effects

In addition to the amazing number of video effects, from simple 2-D to complex 3-D non-linear, supported with the DME-3000, a broad range of new effects is offered with the DME-7000. Four brandnew boards realize the following attractive picture enhancements. Digital SKETCHTM Effects With the optional BKDM-7041 board installed, the DME-7000 provides Digital SKETCH effects that give a sketch touch to the input video. For example, the picture can be given the appearance of an oil painting with the Sketch effect,

3-D Shadow

Brick

Glow

Wind

Metallic

Explosion

Drawing

Advanced ShadowTM Effects The Advanced Shadow option, which is included with the BKDM-7070 board, gives more natural shadows to a picture. This option allows precise 3-D control of shadows including sizing, perspective, fade and depth defocus. The movement of shadows can be automatically synchronized to follow the light source. An external key signal can be used to shape a shadow by using the BKDM-7060 board. And, most importantly, all of these effects are realized within a single channel of DME-7000. Brick Effect The BKDM-7060/7070 boards provide the DME-7000 with another advantageous feature called Brick effect. This automatically assembles a brick-shaped object and maps video and matte color onto its three surfaces, again within a single channel of DME-7000. The brick can be freely transformed and rotated in 3-D space. The height of the brick is also controllable.

Digital SPARKLETM and Non-linear Effects Digital SPARKLE effects are also available for the DME-7000. SPARKLE effects such as Explosion(Pixel), Swirl, Melt, Multi Mirror, Twist, Kaleidoscope and Blind are offered by the BKDM-7031 option board. The BKDM-3030 Nonlinear Effects board provides further SPARKLE and non-linear effects including Wave, Ripple, Rings, Broken Glass, Flying Bars, Lens, Character Trail, Mosaic Glass, Split Slide and Panorama. Improved Defocus & Blur Effects The DME-7000 supports advanced Defocus and Blur effects as standard. The improved defocus filter considerably reduces the black noise along a picture frame, which would often appear when a picture was deeply defocused. The many mask patterns generated by the BKDM-3040 can be used to mask the defocus area. The Blur effect can be independently adjusted for video luminance, video chrominance and key signals as well as for H and V directions. Glow Effect The Glow effect gives an illusional look to a picture by detecting the luminance level of the picture and softening its high-light areas, making them glow. Effect areas can be cropped. The BKDM-7060/7070 optional boards make this effect available. New Lighting Effects Lighting and Shading effects, which are available with the BKDM-3050 board, give three dimensional realism to nonlinear effects. For a 3-D linear picture, the lighting type can be selected from flat, bar or circle while the appropriate lighting type is given to each of the non-linear effects. The DME-7000, together with the BKDM-3040 and BKDM-7060 boards, also provides two types of spot light effect. In the Source Spot Lighting effect, the light on the foreground picture tracks movement in the foreground. On the other hand, Target Spot Lighting, which can be put on both foreground and background, is targeted at a global point and not affected by movement in the foreground. Spot light shapes can utilize wipe patterns such as star and heart. New Recursive Effects The variety of available recursive effects are extended when the DME-7000 is equipped with the BKDM-7060 board. These include Wind effect, Rainbowcolored Trail, Random-colored Trail and Defocus Trail.

u Auto Fitting Function

For a DME-7000 system which is installed with the BKDM-7060/7041/3040 boards, a very convenient feature - the automatic frame fitting function - is now supported. When an external key signal which shapes any quadrilateral is fed to the DME-7000, this function automatically detects its coordinates. A picture can then be automatically transformed in the 3D space and fitted into the quadrilateral shape.

u Keyframe Operation
Up to 99 animated effects can be created and stored in the keyframe memories of the DME-7000. Four types of motion paths such as Linear, Spline, Smooth and Step are available to connect the keyframes into a trajectory. The path type and its motion parameters can be applied independently to each of the 3-D transformations such as Location and Sizing. Furthermore, keyframe effect data created in a DME-3000 system can be loaded into a DME-7000 system to realize the same effect.

u Powerful Linked Operation with Switcher and Editor

Sony integrated system interface enables superior system performance in both live and production applications. When the DME-7000 is combined with Sony DVS Series switchers and BVE Series edit controllers, a wide range of convenient operational features are provided. DME-LINKTM The DME-LINK function is provided in conjunction with the DVS-7000 Series, DVS-6000/C and DVS-2000C switchers. Up to 44 preset patterns of the DME-7000 such as Slide, Split, Squeeze, Door, Pageturn and Roll can be used for scene transitions in the same manner as switcher wipe transitions. They can be controlled from the switcher fader lever or auto transition button. User DME In addition to the preset DME patterns in the DME-LINK function, user programmed keyframe effects are also controlled from the DVS-7000 Series, DVS-6000/C and DVS-2000C. Any keyframe effects can be rapidly recalled and performed from the switcher fader lever, contributing to efficient operation, especially in live program production.

Keyframe-LINKTM When the DME-7000 is combined with the DVS-7000 Series and DVS-6000/C Video Switcher, the Keyframe-LINK function is available. Timelines of the DME keyframe effects and the switcher keyframe effects are linked to be simultaneously displayed on the single EL panel of the switcher. In addition, the DVS-2000C GUI option can display the DME keyframe effects on its timeline together with the switcher snapshot sequences. Relative timing between these effects can be easily adjusted. Snapshot Recall Snapshot memory stores all the status data of the Current Work Buffer in 99 memories. In other words, since up to 99 keyframe data can be temporarily stored in this snapshot memory and quickly recalled, very efficient effect editing is achieved. The recalling of a snapshot can be commanded from the DVS-7000, DVS-7200 and DVS-6000/C control panel as well as via the DME-7000 menu display.

Editor Interface The DME-7000 has a serial interface with Sony BVE Series edit controllers. Full keyframe control including keyframe modify are available from the BVE-9100 system. The BVE-2000 can manually control the keyframe effects in PLAY, STOP, VARIABLE PLAY, JOG and SHUTTLE modes.

signals, the DME-7000 is also switchable between 525/60 and 625/50 standards, while the composite configuration operates in NTSC. In addition, it is possible to switch between a 4:3 and 16:9 operation.

u Intuitive Operation Style

The operational style of the DME-7000 is consistent with that of the DME-3000. The comprehensive Graphical User Interface shows two menu windows at the same time, greatly contributing to easy, quick operation. The convenient track ball and the Z-RingTM on the control panel unit, together with an optional mouse, allow intuitive and efficient operation for picture manipulation and keyframe control.

u Simple System Switching Composite/Component and 4:3/16:9

In its digital environment with the BKDM-7020 I/O board, the DME-7000 can handle either composite or component video signals via a simple menu selection. As the Sony DVS-7000 Series digital switchers also support this switchable operation, a very quick alternation between digital composite and digital component is provided to the total editing system. On the other hand, with the BKDM-3022 Composite or the BKDM-3023 Component I/O board installed, a mixed operation of digital and analog signals is available. When configured to handle component

ChromAlloyTM Option
The DME-7000 now supports the creative ChromAlloy option, which offers high-quality and precise color manipulation to satisfy the artistic requirements of the operator. The BKDM-7021 Digital Color Effect board provides the effects to either the main channel or the sub-channel of the DME-7000 by menu selection.

u RGB Color Correction Option

The DME-7000 can include a powerful digital color corrector. This color correction can be performed in both R/G/B and Y/U/V color spaces, using full 4:4:4 processing. Mask patterns can be used to limit the area on which the color correction effect is added. The color correction circuit consists of three sequential stages of processings.
Color Corrector Processing
YUV to RGB Primary CCR Secondary CCR RGB to YUV Lum Proc.

Primary Color Correction The first process in the color corrector provides Gain, Black, Gamma and Knee correction of R/G/B. Typically, a poor White and Gamma balance, which may have accidentally occurred during shooting, can be corrected in postproduction with this process. In addition to the numerical adjustment of White, Gamma, Black and Knee, there is another mode to control the primary correction. This mode allows you to adjust the R/G/B colors by directly varying their respective characteristic curves. Moreover, the histogram menu displays a distribution graph of R/G/B for reference of correction values. 6-Vector Color Correction The second process supports very advanced six-vector color correction. In this processing, Luminance, Saturation and Hue corrections are individually made to the six color vectors of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Cyan and Magenta. Therefore, this sophisticated correction allows precise adjustments to be made to a specific domain on the color vector without affecting other domains.

Lum Proc Function The Lum Proc (Luminance Processing) function divides the input source video into two or three segments, depending on luminance level. A coloring effect can then be individually added to each of the areas. For example, a color can be emphasized, or even replaced, only within the bright area of a picture. Four creative modes, such as Tint Add and Color Modify, are provided for this effect.

u Metallic Effect
Another valuable feature of the ChromAlloy option is called Metallic effect. This effect gives a picture the appearance of a metallic surface. Gold and Silver modes are prepared to add luster to a picture according to luminance level. In addition, Rainbow and Psychedelic modes are available to create a vivid surface on the picture. Effect area can be masked.
