Fifth Annual HarvestFest Dinner & Barn Dance in Salem SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its fifth annual HarvestFest Dinner & Barn Dance on Saturday, September 8. Celebrate the end of summer with local food, music, art and activities for the entire family. All events take place at Salem Art Works on Cary Lane from 4pm to 11:00pm. A silent auction will help raise funds for the Chambers Crisis Fund, which helps families in the community experiencing a medical crisis. This years celebration, in conjunction with the Washington County Cheese Tour, begins at 4pm with Vendor Fair and Childrens Area offering face painting, games & fun and Cheese Sampling. The fun continues when, at 6:00 pm, a stroll up the barn lane leads you to the music of the award-winning duo of Al and Kathy Bain performing their traditional country, bluegrass and gospel music. The Bains are known for their outstanding vocals and harmonies, with Kathy on upright bass and Al playing a Travis-style guitar and 5-string banjo. Throughout the Bains performance enjoy the farm to fork dinner entirely sourced from locally grown food: slow cooked beef and pork from Locust Grove Smokehouse, corn from Sheldons Farms, freshly baked Rupert Rising Breads, salads made with produce from Slack Hollow Farm and the Courthouse Community Garden, and (the grand finale) ice cream from Battenkill Valley Creamery with Gardenworks famous berry sauce. Beer, wine, water and soda will be available for purchase. The fun continues with a boot-scootin Barn Dance beginning at 9:00 pm. Swing your partner to the country harmonies of The Bluebillies, a 5-piece band from the foothills of the Adirondacks. The Bluebillies feature close-harmony country singing and songwriting duo Melba Deen and Mark Guarino joined by other local noted musicians John Tichy, Dale Haskell and Kevin Maul. The annual HarvestFest Silent Auction begins at 4pm and benefits the Salem Area Crisis Fund, which helps local people in need with severe medical or accidentrelated expenses. Youll find fabulous baskets, gift certificates from local businesses, arts and crafts. Bids close at 8:00 pm. Admission to 4-6pm activities is free. A combined Dinner/ Barn Dance ticket is $25 per adult; $6 for children under 10; and free for children under 5. Tickets for the Barn Dance only are $10/person or $15/couple. Tickets are on sale at Gardenworks, Salem Hardware, Salem Auto Parts, Jackson Traders, and Glens Falls National Bank Salem Branch. Tickets are also available in Shushan at TRIPs Antiques, Garden & Gifts & Yushaks. All activities are held at Salem Art Works on 19 Cary Lane, off West Broadway in Salem. For more information visit www.salemnychamber.com. If you are interested in donating to the Silent Auction please contact: Angela Sturgis at 518-854-3335 or asturgis@nycap.rr.com & Jessica Corey at 518-491-3339 or jtiplady@wildblue.net . Percentage of seniors (65+), with low income, who say they are in excellent health:U..S. 12%England 02%Canada 06% So, I am wondering, why do we want to totally scrap an oviously superior system and go to Obamacare, which follows the models of England, Canada and other socialist plans? Check this last set of statistics!! 2. The percentage of each past presidents cabinet who had worked in theprivate business sector prior to their appointment to the cabinet. Here are the percentages. T.Roosevelt-38%; Taft- 40%; Wilson- 52%; Harding- 49%; Coolidge- 48%; Hoover - 42%; F. Roosevelt-50%; Truman50%; Johnson - 47%; Nixon- 53%; Ford -42%; Carter- 32%; Reagan-86%; GH Bush- 51%; Clinton- 39%; GW Bush-55%; And the winner is:Obama- 08% This helps to explain the incompetence of this administration: only 8% ofthem have ever worked in a job not supported by tax money!Thats right! Only eight percentthe least, by far, of the last 19 presidents! And these people are trying to tell our big corporations how to run their business? They know whats best for GM, Chrysler, Wall Street, and you and me? How can the president of a major nation and society, the one with the most successful economic system in world history, stand and talk about business when hes never worked for one? Or about jobs when he has never really had one? And when its the same for 92% of his senior staff and closest advisers? Theyve spent most of their time in academia, government and/or non-profit jobs or as community organizers. One of the penalties of not participating in politics is that you will begoverned by your inferiors. Plato FIND THE GNOME- Pumpkinpalooza 4 is adding No Place Like Gnome to Pumpkinpalooza 4. Aunt Kathy Thinks... Politicians should only have 2 weeks a year to campaign and that comes out of their vacation time not the taxpayers time. 2) They pay for their own travel, expenses and security during this time, not the taxpayer. 3) They cannot spend more than $25,000 on their campaign. 4) Any money left over from donations to their campaign will go towards the national debt. 5) All political convention expenses (this includes security) will not use any taxpayer money and will be limited to 1 day. (Lets face it if you cant get your point across in this amount of time, youre just not going to! Lets see how they all do when they cant use our money for themselves!

Attendants at the recycling center record all transactions and process the credit card purchases on an IPAD, with VISA and MASTERCARD credit and debit cards accepted. Residents still have the option of using tickets purchased elsewhere as well. Traffic flow has also been changed for more effective flow. The original exit is now the entrance and the old entrance is now the exit. An attendant will meet cars as they enter and process a credit card transaction or take the recycling tickets purchased elsewhere. Attendants are still there to aid those requiring help. The county recycling centers are the most cost efficient way to dispose of your trash. They are price competitive with private haulers and offer more services such as disposal of refrigerators, electronic equipment, construction and demolition products, yard waste and brush. The centers also offer recycling in specific categories of plastic and paper products, which is more environmentally friendly than single-stream recycling, which is used by most private haulers. Citizens save money, the county coffers benefit, and the environment benefits when people use their recycling centers.

Come Explore the Cosmos

On Monday, August 6, the Curiosity rover, a compact-car-sized biochemistry lab, landed on Mars to help determine whether Mars ever had the conditions to sustain life. The rover has been sending back breathtaking images of the Martian landscape creating a buzz in both the science world and the private sector as well. If you have ever looked up at the night sky and wondered just what is out there, now is your opportunity to explore the possibilities. This September, the Salem Astronomy Club is beginning its second year and welcomes new members. The group meets at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month at the Courthouse Community Center located at 58 East Broadway across from the Salem Central School. Meetings are open to anyone with an interest, and no membership fee is required. Bill Frederick, club director, has put together an informative web page at http://wfrederi.wix.com/salem-astronomy.club. Planned events for the coming year include observation sessions, star parties, trips to local observatories and astronomy conferences and stimulating monthly topics. Members range from the novice to experts with decades of experience who enjoy sharing their understanding of the cosmos. Anyone interested in participating should contact the Courthouse Community Center or email Bill Frederick at wfrederi@gotsky.com.

WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN! We The People.. are the backbone, skeleton, flesh and blood of this great country. Our government is simply a tool that allows us to achieve our goals in a civilized and organized manner. September 11, 2001 proved to us and the world that when the chips are down it is individuals who make a difference. To us, hero is a term more appropriately attributed to the actions of Todd Beamer, Thomas E Burnett, Jr, Jeremy Glick and Mark Bingham, the people who took it upon themselves to take down United Flight #93, fully aware of the consequences. But, they did it, and in so doing, saved countless lives. Individuals like these men are the ones who have built this country and made it great. They didnt wait for any directive from a government agency. They didnt beg for help or anguish over what they knew they had to do. They simply did it, and in doing so the terrorists were denied. So, never forget! It is during times like these that many of us feel that our contributions are inadequate or not important. But, every effort we make on our own behalf or on behalf of others solidifies the foundation upon which our system of government sits. It is not the politicians, nor the media pundits, nor the bureaucracies that make this country great. No.. its we, the people. Celebrate our freedoms, and be vigilant so that we dont lose them.
