SPORTURA. When Seiko measured her gold medal long jump at the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships, we knew that Darya
Klishina was destined for greatness. Today, she wears the new Sportura chronograph which reects her dedication to perfection.
With a diamond dial and ceramic highlights on the case and bracelet, its looks are as exceptional as its performance. Like Darya,

6 LETS GO WITH RYANAIR
RYANAIR WILL CARRY 79 MILLION passengers
this year, making us once again the worlds favourite
airline as conrmed by IATAs analysis of the top 50
airlines (see below).
The cleanest, greenest airline in the world, Ryanair
operates 300 aircra on 1,500 routes, connecting 160
destinations and delivering Europes No 1 customer
service, with the most on-time ights and the fewest
cancellations and mishandled bags.
Ryanairs winter schedule is now available on
www.ryanair.com with unbeatable fares and lots
of great new routes, especially to/from Poland and
Hungary. Take a look at our new winter schedule from
Warsaw Modlin and Budapest airports to plan a break
to these beautiful and historic cities.
Even though Ryanair delays are very rare, we
now oer a free SMS update service for passengers
who experience delays of over 90 minutes, especially
useful during periods of severe disruption, such as
ATC strikes or airspace closures so enter your mobile
number the next time you book.
In August, Ryanair invited charities to apply to
become the partner to our 2013 Ryanair Cabin Crew
Charity Calendar. Over 500,000 has been raised
for charities since 2008 and we hope to raise another
100,000 for charity this year, so look out for the 2013
calendar which will be on sale soon.
Congratulations to Andrea Pisu from Sardinia,
the second passenger on our Trapani-Calgiari route to
win a free Fiat 500 car (aer Rosea Ampola in April
11) on our Fly to Win scratchcard game. For just 2, you
could win up to 10,000 in cash, travel vouchers or a car,
as well as the chance to scoop a cool 1m. Ask one of our
Cabin Crew for a scratchcard today.
Dont forget Ryanairs new hotel search engine,
RyanairHotels.com, comparing more hotel prices than
any other website, ensuring that as always Ryanair
gets you the lowest prices.

From the Editor
in Vienna! Its kind of insane, I mean who
would have thought that the city of the
Vienna Boys Choir and the Schnbrunn
Palace, and snow and Christmas markets,
has some of its best nightlife on a beach?
And the sea is nowhere to be found! All this
sand has been dropped on the banks of the
Danube Canal at dierent beaches and the
party goes on. Vienna is a magnicent city for so many reasons,
and to discover them see our cover story, starting on page 51.
But we dont just have the Austrian capital for you this
September, no sir-eee, we are packed with incredible ideas and
amazing experiences for your next trip, many of which have
come from your tweets and emails.
For instance, you may still have time to book a Barcelona
ight and get out to the citys big end-of-summer festival in
honour of the Virgin of Mercy towards the end of the month. See
page 14 for a fantastic image of the human pyramids involved!
And if youre planning a trip for later this year, be sure to
read our feature on sunny autumn destinations (page 68). If
youd prefer some snow, try dog-sledding in the Alps (page 90).
Is there something happening in your city in the coming
months that you want us to cover? Wed love to hear from
you, so tell us about whats going on near you via Twier
(@helloletsgo), Facebook (facebook.com/letsgomag) and email
(hello@letsgo-mag.com). Lets Go!

MATT GLASBY
London-based journalist
Ma usually writes
about movies, for
magazines such as Total
Film, but for this issue
of Lets Go with Ryanair
he learned the art of
mushing travelling by
dog-pulled sledge in the
French Alps. His feature
starts on page 90. The
dogs were beautiful,
says Ma. If a touch
perky. Id recommend
mushing to anyone
whose love of animals
outweighs their fear of
eating snow.

and The Independent.
She commissions

Londons Shoreditch,
because there are
always more exciting
lile shops and places to

PETER GEOGHEGAN
Irish journalist Peter
lives in Edinburgh, but
spends a lot of his time
travelling. For this
issue he headed to one
of his favourite cities,
Brussels, to explore
the Belgian capitals
culinary scene with the
help of some food and

city of its size, Brussels
has a staggeringly
high number of great
restaurants, he says. It
was fantastic to explore
them with locals. Read
about it on page 79.

#6 IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
Read this and youll never forget a name or a shopping list again
BETTER
MEMORY
CRIB SHEET
Give everyone
a floating name
tag in your mind
Add a picture
to associate
them with
something or
someone
Listen to what
they say
Repeat their
words in your
head right away
Create a story
incorporating
all the things
you need to
remember
HELLO AGAIN FRIEND! Its been, what
ages? Ah, that familiar feeling of dread
when bumping into someone you know you
know, but you know you dont know where
from. Or what their name is. Or what they
do. Your brain has let you down again time
to give it a bit of a workout.
Give everyone you meet a name tag,
says motivational speaker and all-round
memory whizz Vinay Parmar (vinayparmar.
co.uk). When you meet them, imagine they
have a balloon above their heads with their
name wrien on it, or even a ashing neon
light. Make it vibrant and suited to them.
Vinay recommends making
associations with other people or things
of the same name. So, if someones called
Clint, picture them standing next to Clint
Eastwood in full cowboy gear. If its a
lady called Amber, imagine her stuck to
a tree and coated in resin. People do this
naturally when giving directions, says
Vinay. We provide landmarks, like turn le
at the old clock tower. Try applying this to
other things you need to remember.
Another great tip for retaining what
people say is to, well, listen. Really listen.
Most of us have lile voices in our heads
that like to throw in random thoughts
while we are listening, says Vinay. So turn
o those distractions by instead trying to
repeat what they are saying. Its called the
echo technique. As someone is telling you
something, repeat it in your mind.
A nal trick and one employed by
memory experts the world over is to
create a story. If your shopping list contains
pork, bread, cucumber, eggs, lemonade,
washing-up liquid and a mop, you may
forget it. But not if you picture a pig walking
into a bakery and smelling the fresh bread,
only to accidentally smash some eggs
with a cucumber. Devoid of water, he uses
lemonade, washing-up liquid and a mop
to clean up. This can also work well for
remembering what you have to do on a busy
day, says our unforgetful friend. So did
you get all that? W

When I asked online for your tips on
this German city, I ended up with a
weekend that involved beer, poison
and talking animals
I enjoyed the tour of the Becks Brewery
Eric Seufert, via Facebook
I love beer, I blurt out, perhaps a lile too loudly.
Youre in the right place then, says Insa, my
impossibly tall and blonde guide, and she is right. I
have followed Erics most excellent tip to the banks
of the River Weser and the mighty monument to
beeriness that is the Becks Brewery.
I try not to giggle as Insa explains that Becks
is the product of boom fermentation, then she
whisks me onto the production oor; all whirring
conveyor belts full of boles, lightning-fast labelling
machines and vats of hops. Insa tells me I must
wear a neon orange safety vest. I suspect the real
reason is so she can spot me if I run o and try to
get my head under the taps that ll all the boles.
Eventually, I am dragged away upstairs for a special
tasting session. Its a dirty job, but someones got to
do it. You can take your neon vest o now, Insa tells
me. You are safe.
Id beer keep it on, I reply. You havent seen
me when Im drunk.

The House of History in the old Schnoor area is fun
its a museum where local people play characters
from the towns past
@leilaos, via Twitter
I am face to face with Bremens most notorious
serial killer. Infamous for spicing her victims soup
with arsenic, Gesche Gofried has killed at least 15
people. She is the Hannibal Lecter of north-western
Germany. She also, thankfully, died 181 years ago,
but the actor playing her is still prey scary. I say
actor, the nice thing about the House of History is
that all the people working here are until-recently
unemployed locals, given a fresh start.
Aer Gesche, I meet a tough sea captain looking
for recruits. I fail the rst two tests: knowing port
from starboard and being able to tie knots (Im more
of a Velcro man). The only position hell oer me is
lookout, up in the crows nest. I explain that I rather
unhelpfully have a fear of heights.
Thats ne, he says. Well just nail you to

Roxy is a trendy restaurant
in Stockholm with a retro,
New York feel. They do really
great burgers that you can wash
down with local beer. For a casual
place, the bill was a tiny bit higher
than I was expecting, but its
still a great choice for dinner
with friends.

MY CITY TALLINN
Local fashion designer Liisi Eesmaa, whose shop stocks own-label and
vintage pieces, picks her favourite places in the Estonian capital
FLY RYANAIR TO TALLINN
Do you live in a Ryanair destination? Tell us about it! hello@letsgo-mag.com
Tallinn has a
beautiful old
town, which I
love, but it also has
a really open-minded
community of young
people and a mix of
sub-cultures. As a
designer I feel real
artistic freedom here.
Its like the new Berlin,
loaded with charismatic
people with fresh ideas.
The citys
coolest street
is Mrivahe.
I run Sireen Vintage
Boutique here (22
Mrivahe, tel.
+372 5597 5275) together
with the actress Elina
Phklimgi. Its open
only on Thursdays, or
for special bookings,
has a cute, friendly
atmosphere and we
stock lots of rare and
delicious dresses. I also
love a store on this
street called Drink
Shop (15 Mrivahe,
tel. +372 641 2427), as
they have the best
selection of beers and
ciders. And I really
like a bar/restaurant
called Must Puudel (20
Mrivahe, tel. +372 505
6258). Theres a music
quiz every Wednesday
evening, and its the
perfect bar for some end
of the night drinks.
My favourite
gallery in
Tallinn is called
Temnikova and Kasela
(22 Mrivahe, tel. +372
640 5770, temnikova.ee),
in the same building
as my shop look
for the bright yellow
door. They feature
up-and-coming artists.
Nearby is the oldest
and hippest art-house
cinema in Tallinn, Kino
Sprus (8 Vana-Posti,
tel. +372 646 6332,
kinosoprus.ee). And
I love psychedelic
vintage shop
Fankadelik (6 Vana-
Viru, fankadelik.com),
selling clothes and
records, plus you can
get a haircut here!
In the cool,
bohemian Kopli
neighbourhood
is one of Tallinns best
bar/bistros, Kukeke
(57 Telliskivi, tel. +372
677 8738). They use only
local produce, and make
magic in the kitchen. Im
also a fan of an outdoor
party called Hoovi Pidu
(Hoov, 4 Viru, +372 5375
3332, hoov.eu), which
usually happens twice
a month on a Thursday.
Its a carefree music
mash that goes on
until morning.
We have some architectural
leftovers from the Soviet period, like the iconic
Linnahall (20 Mere Puiestee), a huge sports and
concert hall built for the 1980 Olympics. Theres also
Patarei (6-124 Kihnu, tel.+372 504 6536, patarei.org),
which used to be a sea fortress prison. I go for the
19th-century architecture and spooky atmosphere. I

FLY RYANAIR TO BRATISLAVA (VIENNA) FROM 16 DESTINATIONS, INCLUDING ALGHERO | DUBLIN | EDINBURGH | LIVERPOOL |
IF ANY CITY HAS THE BEST of the old, the
best of the new, and a standard of living
that is o the charts, then that city is surely
the Austrian capital, Vienna.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire may
be long gone, and the creative nucleus that
existed at the beginning of the 20th century
when Josef Homann, Oo Wagner,
Koloman Moser, Adolf Loos and Gustav
Klimt heralded the great age of Austrian
modernism may be no more, but the
echoes resound. Viennas elegant buildings
house many leading institutions of art,
music and theatre.
Today, Vienna really feels like
a city coming into its own, to which
Austrias young gravitate to mix with an
international community. Horse-drawn
carriages vie with bikes on the roads,
yet there are plenty of wide open spaces
and gorgeous parks too great news for
travellers exploring the city on foot.
One of Viennas biggest advantages is
its superb transport system. Get around on
trams, buses and the U-Bahn (which runs
24-hours on weekends), or make use of the
public bike scheme and cycle lanes.
The city is divided into 23 districts. At
the heart is the 1st district, surrounded by
a boulevard called the Ringstrae, which
follows the route where the old city walls
once stood. Eight more central districts are
arranged around it, with the others further
out. The Danube river slices through the
north-east near the famous Prater park.
So how do the Viennese see their city?
Local graphic designer Christof Nardin,
puts it this way: Its a city where new
things happen but nothing much becomes
trendy, where big city meets small town
mentality, and new meets old.
And hes right. New cafs, bars and
shops are popping up all the time, but
theyre not pretentious or over-hyped. In
many ways, Vienna is a place that is quietly
reinventing itself. Theres a real buzz about
the city right now, making this the perfect
time to experience it for yourself.

so much art to see in Vienna, but Gustav

humankinds search for happiness.

HIT THE SHOPS ON THEOBALDGASSE
This up-and-coming street in the 6th district is a prime example
of Viennas creativity. Check out hip contemporary caf Akrap,
delicatessen-cum-record-store Tongues (pictured), fashion
boutique We Bandits, and top interiors store Habari all nestled
alongside each other. Sip espresso, buy records, eat lunch!

SPEND TIME IN THE MUSEUMSQUARTIER
Have breakfast at a caf like MQdaily or Kantine, then visit
modern art museum Mumok, the Leopold Museum (and its
superb Egon Schiele collection), or Kunsthalle Wien. Whatever
you see, this car-free open space has a cool, cultural vibe.

SWIM IN THE NEW DANUBE Cycle or take the U-Bahn out east to the Donauinsel,
a 21km-long man-made island in the centre of the river, where you can swim in the
clean, still water from May to October. A dip in this artificial channel is truly refreshing,
and there are lots of places to picnic and relax, and even a few naturist spots!

CAF CENTRAL
AS YOU SIT IN ONE OF Viennas classic n
de sicle cafs with the aroma of freshly
roasted beans all around you, its easy to
imagine yourself surrounded by literary
giants of the golden age, busy scrawling
their ideas on scraps of paper, fuelled
by warm slices of apple strudel. At Caf
Central 06, writers and thinkers from
Sigmund Freud to Leon Trotsky rubbed
shoulders, and the elegant interiors create a
romantic atmosphere.
Todays intellectuals may prefer the
trendy surrounds of bookshop Phil 07,
where you can sit on vintage chairs and
read the various tomes over a frothy
cappuccino. Its one of several concept stores
that give the coee tradition a modern
twist. And more of the citys contemporary
buzz can be felt at Vienna Design Week
(viennadesignweek.at), an event that will
transform the capital into one giant design
showroom from 28 September to 7 October.
One of Viennas year-round cultural
pulls is its amazing selection of museums
the Mumok, MAK, Belvedere and Albertina
to name just a few. And the Leopold
Museum 08 includes a huge collection by
Austrian gurative painter Egon Schiele. He
was mentored by Gustav Klimt, whose 150th
anniversary celebrations will see the newly
restored Klimt-Villa 09, home of that artist,
opened at the end of this month.
Vienna is renowned for its architecture,
with buildings like the Opera House set to
astound you. But for a quirkier landmark
head to the nostalgic Wurstelprater 10, an
amusement park whose giant Ferris Wheel,
the Riesenrad, features in The Third Man.
Its located in the Prater park, one of many
elegant green spaces doed around town.
Vienna is full of surprises, and one
museum that is sure to leave an impression
on you is the Museum of Crime 11. Oering
a spine-tingling insight into some of the
citys most gruesome murders (and the
punishments meted out to those who were
caught), its old photos, pistols and daggers
are an alternative window on the past.

WE DONT CARE what you do in your
room runs the moo of my super-cool
Vienna crashpad as long as we dont have
to renovate. Thats a winner in my book,
and at the aptly named 25hours Hotel 12

you could easily hold a party in any of the
spacious 34 suites (I did!), each of which
come with a huge bathroom, iPod dock
and oor-to-ceiling windows that give you
magnicent views over the historic centre.
Doubles start at 130, with 15% discounts
for anyone under 25.
The design of the suites is carnival-
esque, with trippy wall illustrations by artist
Olaf Hayek. And even if youre not staying
here you can head out to play at Dachboden
(Aic), its trendy rooop bar (see page
62). Located in the 7th district, next to the
MuseumsQuartier, its easy to get around
from here especially if you borrow one of
the hotels Electra bicycles, at no extra cost.
Drawing crowds all-year round,
Viennas hotel oerings are vast. If you
want a classic stay, try the Hotel Imperial
13

(doubles from 350), a majestic former
palace all rich carpets, 19th-century
paintings and elegant antique furniture.
At the other end of the scale, in the
newly hip 2nd district, is the recently
opened Meininger Downtown Sissi 14

(dorm beds from 16), clean, well-located
and giving you loads more cash to splash
on your trip.
Another cool Vienna concept is the
Urbanauts 15

street los project, set in a
former tailors. Book online (it costs 120 a
night), pick up your key from a safebox on
arrival and eat breakfast at a hip caf round
the corner. Not only can you live like a local,
but its also a way of revitalising disused
shops. More street los are on their way.
My nal recommendation is the
designer downtown gem Hotel Topazz
16

(doubles from 198) in the 1st district,
whose sculptural exterior looks like it is
studded with jewels. Siing in one of its
comfy oval window seats is like peering
out of an eye into the heart of Vienna.

Spotlight on Vienna
THE STAPLES OF VIENNESE cuisine are
instantly recognisable and delicious from
Wiener Schnitzel (a tender veal cutlet in
breadcrumbs) to Sacher-Torte (chocolate
cake with apricot jam and chocolate glaze).
An authentic place to try them is at a Beisl,
Viennas traditional pub-restaurants found
throughout the city. Two of the best are
Haas Beisl 17

in the 5th district, warm, jovial
and decked out in wood, and Finkh 18

in the
6th, a more avant-garde take, housed in a
former engine workshop.
A dining experience not to miss is
Holy-Moly! 19, the gourmet joint from
Austrian star chef Christian Petz. Aer
winning accolades at the lavish Palais
Coburg, Christian quit to make simple
food using good-quality local produce at
aordable prices. At this restaurant on
Danube boat the Badeschi with its tiny
kitchen and tight menu that changes every
night he succeeds. At an average of 40
per head, its always packed, you can bring
your own bole (for a 14 corkage fee)
and the service is faultless. The beuschel I
ordered, a heart and lung ragout made with
deer, was divine.
Less Austrian, but just as good, is Maria
Fuchs Neopolitan pizza at Pizza Mari 20.
The former fashion student opened this
minimalist, wood-red pizzeria aer a year
spent living in Naples, and hasnt looked
back. It helps that her pizza chefs are
Neopolitans themselves!
Just down the street is the colourful
and fun Fe + Zucker 21

(Fat and Sugar),
a small coee and cake house where the
owners make incredible cakes that taste so
good because they are full of, you guessed
it, fat and sugar. A real treat.
I cant omit the humble sausage
from this list the Wrstelstand 22

is a
ubiquitous sight in the city. So if youre
feeling peckish at lunch or late at night then
these kiosks are just what you need. The
one near the Burggarten is open till 4am.

Spotlight on Vienna
THROUGH SUMMER INTO OCTOBER
most Viennese qua spritzers (German
for splash), the much-loved combination
of white wine and soda water. Theres
variations on the theme too, with Prosecco
and a dash of Aperol a popular alternative.
Over four nights in town, I drink many,
particularly at the popular Danube Canal
beach bars Adria Wien and Strandbar
Herrmann 23. The laer is a Viennese
institution, an open-air sliver of concrete by
the water replete with sand and deck chairs.
Its populated by a hip and arty crowd who
come for its DJs and regular parties.
Viennese nightlife is varied, fun and
growing. Check out the nights hosted
by underground dubstep group de jour
Atomique (facebook.com/atomiquevienna),
held once a month at the Badeschi.
And youll nd an up-for-it crowd at top
clubbing spots Fluc 24

and Volksgarten
25. The former, in a converted pedestrian
underpass near Prater park, is all about
experimental electronic music, with a mix
of DJs and live acts every night of the week.
Volksgarten, located in the 1st district in
the eponymous peoples park, has indoor
and outdoor sections and big names on the
decks. Its celebrated happenings include
Techno Cafe on Tuesdays.
A laid-back and seriously good-looking
crowd populates Dachboden 26

, the rooop
bar of the 25hours Hotel, sipping cocktails
and dancing on the terrace. A rather more
studenty crowd can be found in the various
bars in the MuseumsQuartier, before
hiing nearby clubs like Donau 27. Hidden
behind a metal door and open every night
playing techno, minimal and house music, it
even has its own hot-dog stand inside.
My favourite nd in Vienna though is
a bar in a former brothel in the 6th district,
Tanzcafe Jenseits 28 (the aerlife bar).
Red velvet curtains stop prying eyes, and
you gain entry at the barmans discretion
via camera, aer ringing the bell. Order
a spritzer and dance to swing, funk or
whatever the DJ of the night treats you to.

they are. She laughs at my naivety. Cest gratuit.
Between the free nibbles and the funky decor its
no surprise that Delecta (2 Rue Lannoy, tel. +32
(0)2 644 1949) is, as Yamina says, the place to be on
Thursday evening.
Its just past 8pm and the weekend has already
started. The bar is full, music pumping. Through
the window I catch a glimpse of a DJ, silhoueed
in front of brown oral 1970s wallpaper. An old
stove planted in the centre of the bar doesnt seem
to bother the waitresses, who shimmy around it.
Everyone else even the small cadre of dancers
arranged around the DJ seems to be eating.
Brussels may be the biggest city in Belgium
(not to mention the uno cial capital of Europe)
but it retains a refreshingly intimate feel. Most of
the city can be traversed on foot in an hour or two,
and neighbourhoods feel less like urban spaces and
more like small, overlapping villages, each with its
own special ambience and as I quickly discover
culinary specialities. This year has been billed by
the city as Brusselicious 2012 (brusselicious.be), a
quirky moniker for a fun and year-long food festival.
Yamina has been blogging about food in her
native city for the website Spoed by Locals
(spoedbylocals.com) since 2009. She writes mainly
about places in and around Ixelles, where she lives.
The leafy suburb is popular with cool kids and also

with expats who work in the nearby European
Union buildings. As the DJ ups the tempo,
we polish o our drinks, ready to build up an
appetite with a walking tour of some of Yaminas
favourite restaurants.
On Chausse dIxelles, the main thoroughfare
connecting Ixelles to the city centre, every second
building seems to be a restaurant. Its a ingly
multicultural mix: theres Italian, Egyptian,
Chinese, Vietnamese even an Eritrean, decked
out in garish neon lights. We look in the window
of Hama Shin (number 272), a Japanese place that,
Yamina says, doesnt look fancy but is one of the
best in town. Theres also a fantastic Portuguese
deli that is so small only an estate agent could
describe it as bijou.
At the summit of Chausse dIxelles sits
Matong, a lile piece of Africa in the heart of
Brussels. Matong, which takes its name from
a neighbourhood in Kinshasa, capital of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, has the lively,
bustling feel of an African city. Cars drive by blasting
their horns, people stand talking on the street and, of
course, there is the rich, sweet smell of cooking.
Matong boasts a number of restaurants, many
specialising in a fusion of Western and African styles.
For a genuine taste of Central Africa, we head straight
to Kuumba (35 Rue de la Paix), a community centre-
cum-restaurant decked out in African art, and posters
of Manchester City and Belgium captain Vincent
Kompany, a footballer proud of his DRC heritage.
People who visit Matong should not just
experience the food but the culture too, enthuses
Jeroen Marckelbach, a tall Flemish man who set up
Kuumba three years ago, aer completing a nine-
month cycle from Matong in Brussels to its Kinshasa
namesake. Having explored the gallery at the back,

we sit down to a sumptuous meal of salt cod, wilted
cassava leaves, plantains, and that Central African
staple, maize. The food is hearty and perfectly cooked,
but the incredibly generous portions defeat Yamina

Les Brassins is just a ve-minute walk from
Matong, on the other side of Chausse dIxelles,
but it feels like another world when I arrive
with Jane Goodyear, an American who runs the
blog Best of Brussels (bestorusselsblog.com).
In the low-ceilinged, wood-panelled brasserie,
you can hear the happy chaer of aer-work
diners sharing glasses of beer and plates of frites,
competing with the sound of the Marianne
Faithfull record they're playing over the speakers.
Patrice, Les Brassins avuncular owner, presents
us with a rustic menu brimming with Belgian
specialties: rabbit in cherry sauce, steak with fries,
and the famous Brussels take on mashed potatoes,
stoemp. In the end, I plump for charbonnade, a
succulent meat stew slow-cooked with beer that
tastes as good as it sounds.
In Brussels a lot of the best places are hidden. I
think the Belgians like it that way, Jane remarks
as we stroll back along the nondescript residential
street that leads to Les Brassins. Certainly many
of the citys nest restaurants are in seings that
seem, at rst glance, rather unremarkable. Take

Janes favourite, Chez Marie (tel. +32 (0)2 644 3031, 40
Rue Alphonse de Wie). Youd easily miss the quiet
street near the Ixelles ponds that is home to this
small, stylish French bistro (although youre less
likely to forget the myriad photographs of buxom
ladies in various states of undress that adorn the

+32 (0)2 611 0622), an excellent Japanese noodle bar,
sits in the midst of an unassuming row of o ces
and town houses.
When it comes to food on the street, your
options are plentiful. Situated between the
imposing Palace of Justice and the Royal Museums
of Fine Arts, the Place du Grand Sablon is one of
Brussels most charming public squares. Its also
home to a Brussels food institution: Claire Fontaine
(3 Ernest Allardstraat, tel. +32 (0)2 512 2410).
This tiny deli, just on the corner, is a veritable
foodie heaven. Alongside rows of spices, salts
and sugars, ne oils and vinegars, is a fresh food
counter stacked high with cheeses, tarts, pts,
cooked vegetables and, a Brussels favourite, shrimp
croquees. Claire prepares all the food in her
kitchen. Every day youll nd something dierent
here, she smiles, passing me a small plate of todays
special, shellsh in a creamy tomato sauce.
Sablon has plenty for those with a sweeter
tooth, too. Pierre Marcolini is arguably the name in

favourite marzipan, thyme and lemon.
A 10-minute walk south-west from Place du
Grand Sablon, up-and-coming Saint-Gilles boasts
some of the best bars in the city. Its also the place to
go to sample another Brussels speciality a cone of
frites. La Friterie de la Barrire, essentially a gloried

the best friterie in the city, just the thing aer a few
strong beers in Potemkine or Brasserie Verschueren.
Chips are fried twice and come smothered in a
choice of sauces.
As for beverages, what can I say? Belgium is, of
course, the beer capital of the world and Brussels
is the place to try them. No one knows exactly
how many Belgian beers there are, but Andrew
Stroehlein has set himself the challenge of sampling
each one. I think 800 is a fair estimate, but not

CHOOSING TO GO to the city
and province of Ferrara means
experiencing Italian history,
nature, art and culture up
close. UNESCOs recognition
of the city and its territory is
an authoritative guarantee of
the value of this unique urban
and natural landscape. Ferrara
was home to one of the most
important Renaissance courts,
the Estense Court, in which
art, culture and philanthropy
thrived at the forefront of one
of mankinds greatest periods.
Ferrara is a place for strolling
along the narrow lanes in the
centre, a city of bicycles, and
the access route to some of the
most famous palaces in the
world. Stop for a while in the
inner court of the magnicent
Estense Castle, visit its many
enthralling museums and savour
the typical dishes of a city whose
gastronomic roots go back to
ancient times. There are multiple
reasons for visiting, innite
reasons for staying.
In just three centuries, Ferrara
grew from a modest rural centre
to a Renaissance masterpiece
with a highly enviable historical
centre. Marvellous palaces, which
once housed the citys nobility,
are still intact, including the
Palazzo dei Diamanti, Palazzo
Schifanoia, Palazzo Marsa
dEste and many others. And then
theres the castle, the symbol
and heart of the city, which still
captures the fascination of all
who see it.
But what the city, and as a
result the entire area, has to
oer really is wide-ranging: for
example, Ferrara is indissolubly
bound to a passion for two
wheelers and hundreds of
kilometres have been designed,
built, and moulded around
pleasing cyclists in the city and its
province. The entire region
has an impressive network of

bicycle tourism routes that wind
through the city and countryside,
taking in protected oases and
villages on the plains real trips
that allow you to understand the
city and its territory, their past and
present, with the intent of telling
the tales of their history and
various characters. For those who
love golf, there are ve courses in
the Ferrara province, including
one in the city that, at less than
a kilometre from the historical
centre, allows guests a very easy
visit to the city and its environs.
And then, what can one say
about its food and wine? The
roots of Ferraras cuisine go
back to the Estense period and
even today these traditions are
vibrant and tasty, full of history
and pleasure real works of art
to be admired and, above all,
savoured! Specialities include
salama da sugo (a pork sausage
speciality), cappellacci di zucca
(pumpkin-lled ravioli), pasticcio
di maccheroni (an oven-baked
macaroni dish), coppia ferrarese (a
bread product typical of Ferrara),
and pampepato (a round, spicy,
cake-like dessert).

across the endless wintry white. This is, at least in
some ways, looking more and more unlikely.
I know them beer than I know my wife, jokes
Christophe as he introduces me to my husky team:
Lucky, Fiesta, Loup, and Roisin, the demure-seeming
leader (apparently the girls always lead because
theyre cleverer than boys). The dogs are harnessed
in front of a shopping trolley-sized sled, which can,
in theory, be halted by pressing the footbrake into
the snow. Christophe tells me to shout Stop! if I
topple, keeping my weight on the sled so the animals
know Im there. How nice that theyre worried for
my safety, I think naievely.
The dogs are assigned to the group based on
weight. Its bright and beautiful up on the plateau,
but in the valley its -26C and the extra layers Im
wearing make me look heavier than I am. The
women in the group, some of whom are taller than
me, are assigned three dogs. I get four. I have a
feeling this might be too much dog-power for me.
As we ready for the o, the dogs on the sled
behind me nip at my feet and yelp with excitement,
while Roisin and her pack strain at the reins as if
they were born to do this. In many ways, they were.
The history of working with canines in cold climates
is a rich one. Horses arent much use on the ice, so
huskies proved essential to mans penetration of the
Poles. In fact, the canny deployment of dogs was the
reason the Norwegians, lead by Roald Amundsen,
beat Britains Robert Sco to the South Pole by ve
weeks in 1911. Although Amundsen did shoot his
tired-out animals then feed them to the others,

Helmer Hanssen. He wasn't wrong. At various
points throughout our half-day trip the other dogs
decide to take dierent routes to the ones that
Christophe is leading us along out in front, and all
of their friends follow, ignoring his instructions
completely. If theyd ganged up on Amundsen like
this he might have found himself endlessly circling
the Pole. Well call it 2-2.
On the nal downhill of the day, the end of
our glorious jaunt, our inter-species rivalry comes
to a head. Before I can slow them, my dogs have
shrugged me o the sled and are bounding down
the incline. Theres nothing more demeaning than
chasing aer your own sled, so I dust myself o
again and trudge south. At the boom I nd four
gleeful dogs who look up at me, surprised, as if to say,
Oh, youre back! What kept you?. Alright guys, call
it a draw?

ONLY 15KM FROM SANTANDER
in northern Spain, lies the vast
Cabrceno Wildlife Park, home
to over 1,200 animals from across
the globe.
The park has a spectacular
karst landscape, upon which
elephants, hippos, ostriches,
camels, tigers, zebras, giraes and
other species live in a semi-wild
state. Spaces have been created
so that the animals can live in
conditions that are as similar as
possible to their original habitats
the elephant enclosure alone is the
same size as Madrids entire zoo.
Cabrceno is home to the
largest reserve of brown bears in
Europe, with around 70 living in
the park. Similarly, the herd of 15
African elephants, many of which
were born here, make up one of the
largest populations of this species
in the world outside Africa.
The gorillas are continually
among the parks most popular
residents. Their enclosure is the
largest of its kind in Spain, and
features a 800m
2
home complete
with large windows so that their
daily life can be observed.
The park is ideal for a family
day out; numerous picnic and
recreational areas, lakes, botanical
trails, cafs, restaurants and play
areas are found across the site,
while visitors can also enjoy the
exciting daily performances in the
seal and sea lion enclosure and the
bird of prey ights.

Education and research
This natural paradise serves an
educational, cultural and scientific
purpose, as well as being one of the
primary recreational attractions in
northern Spain.
The Environmental Education Centre
offers a comprehensive programme of
educational activities aimed at schools
from all over the country.
Cabrcenos scientific facet has
made it an international leader in
endangered species conservation, and
a pioneer in breeding programmes for
animal species in captivity.
The facility participates in a significant
number of studies and analyses, which
it carries out in cooperation with other
parks and zoos, as well as universities,
associations and research centres from
all over the world.

youll need to do is when you
disembark at your destination,
ready to explore by foot, car,
mobile home, motorbike or
bicycle. For those who dont want
to drive, the advantage of joining
a cruise is that you can travel
without a motor vehicle by ying
with Ryanair to one destination
country, cruise around the Baltic,
then y back from another.
Being on board is as much fun
as being on dry land: the cabins are
comfortable, the food in the buffet
restaurant is second to none and,
depending on the vessel, theres
free use of the gym, sauna and hot
tub. Alternatively, indulge in some
shopping or enjoy a relaxing drink
at the bar at very reasonable prices.
When its sunny, grab a deck chair
and soak up the rays while gazing at
the stunning scenery. Meanwhile,
there are games and playrooms to
keep younger travellers amused.
Finnlines oers a variety of
routes across the entire Baltic Sea.
