RIO +20
Background to the event
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) or Rio+20 aims - to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development, to see how much progress has been made towards agreed goals; and look at the new and emerging challenges. The conference will be focusing on two speci c themes: poverty eradication and sustainable development - in the context of a green economy and institutional framework for sustainable development. Nepal is leading on community-based forest management and witnessing substantial post-con ict political, institutional, economic and social transformations. The forestry sector is facing a number of unfolding challenges and opportunities resulting from changes within and outside the sector particularly due to green economy, climate change, carbon business and payments for environmental services. The forestry sectors goal is to ensure that the Rio+20 outcomes and decisions rmly re ect the sustainable forest management agenda, and it includes a framework for action on forestry and green enterprises together with related mandates for forestry sector, including inclusive economic growth through REDD+ payment mechanisms, climate change adaptation and mitigation to signi cantly increase the forestry sector's contribution in the national economy. In order to continue information sharing and seek inputs from international communities, the MFSC, Nepal is organizing a side-event on Sunday 17 June 2012 from 09:30 to 11:00 at Room T-9, RioCentro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
