Why Christy Clark's Team Is Jumping Ship

Bill Barisoff, Dave Hayer, Murray Coell, Kash Heed, Kevin Krueger, Harry Bloy and B.C.'s Minister of Education George Abbott followed suit this week. The Premier was once a rising star in her Liberal party both federally and provincially. When she became Premier, she made history as the second woman Premier of her province and now, just in over a year, the longest serving woman Premier of her province. Her stature is now beginning to be lost just mere months away from an expected BC provincial election. The fact is that, her leadership style and lack of clarity has made her irrelevant and incompetent at best. As a result, it has helped the once damaged provincial NDP from the left and the Conservative Party from the right a real claim at a future government. She has tried to shed her lifelong centrist image and has embraced a slew of conservative causes while hiring a number of Harper staffers as well as pollsters as her trusted advisers. This happened while totally ignoring her political base within her own Liberal base who cheered and supported her when she won the leadership over Kevin Falcon in a bloody contest last February. For them, she represented the progressive and safe political middle that was the reason she became leader and by default Premier. From the get go, she looked like a Premier who panicked and confused her supporters, foes as well as the electorates when she became a turn coat and became

something she is not. As a "conservative" Liberal premier, she has been anything but Conservative when it comes to tax payers' money. The British Columbia Office of the Comptroller recently revealed how the Premier charged $475,000 in expense credit cards in just a year. This was double what her predecessor spent previous to taking over the position. These charges included spending of thousands in a number of over the top restaurants in Vancouver including $3,267.66 at Ferris Oyster Bar in Victoria and $2,279 at Bishops in Vancouver. Former Premier, Gordon Campbell, reported office's expenses that totaled $205,000 and $195,000 the year before that. In politics, authenticity matters most. Her one time supporter Warren Kinsella recently wrote how "Authenticity is the most prized commodity in politics, even in Winlaw, where cellphones don't work and no one seems to care so much. Clark - who was always a card-carrying federal Liberal, and even worked for a cabinet minister in Jean Chretien's government -- has tried for months to persuade everyone she isn't at all what she used to be." Often times, electors are generous enough to over look minor shortcomings with their money. They are wise to look at the bigger picture over small mistakes. However, what they do not forgive is lack of authenticity. Ernie Eves in Ontario learned it the hard way. Premier Clark does not poss authenticity and that is why she will not be Premier for long.

FLP To Work With Mineworkers Union

Fijis Minister of Labour, Industries and Employment Jone Usamate says unemployment remains a serious concern locally. There are at least 500 with degrees are registered in the National Employment Centre (NEC) system at the moment who are looking for jobs, he said. Unemployment is a major, major issue in Fiji. The need to stick to 55 as retirement age in order to curb the growing

500 Degree Holders Unemployed

unemployment rate in the country. With that, government has also taken a hand on approach to train youths for blue collar jobs as well as tap into its Pacific bilateral ties for volunteering works. Usamate said while some people try to separate Fiji from other Pacific Islands, they cannot stop the Pacific family spirit. No one can prevent that, the family of one ocean, the spirit of sharing and meeting its own people.

Fijis Labour Party (FLP) has pledged its support to assist the Fiji Mine Workers Union (FMWU) put into effect their claims in relation to a 21-year-old strike. The partys comment follows a FMWU meeting earlier this week where they decided they will only campaign and back a political party committed to help them in their cause fighting against harsh working conditions at the Emperor Goldmine in Vatukoula. The strike, one that has also been noted in the Guinness World Record as one of the longest in the world began on 27 February 1991 involving 436 workers who also voiced their displeasure against the government of the day then for failing to recognize the workers body as a union. FLP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhry said they are aware of the mine workers' plight and concerns. We will definitely assist them, not in the intention to get their votes but to assist them as they have suffered long enough, said Chaudhry. Not only that there are also some members of the union who are active members of the party. We would have helped them in 1999 when FLP came into office but was not successful

because of the 2000 incident. FMWU president Joseva Sadreu said, The 436 miners represented more than 436 families which now include two other generations of voting age. The union members come from all over Fiji and would represent a significant proportion of the voting public, said Sadreu. He said FMWU was established in light of the decision of the Fiji Court of Appeal in 2006 that the solution to the strike was in the hands of the government of the day. We will campaign vigorously and vote for any political party that undertakes to abide by the Court of Appeal decision that the recommendations of the 1995 G.P Lala Commission of Inquiry into work and conditions at Vatukoula, and our claims for human rights, can be accepted, respected, and acted upon by the government. FMWU had made their submissions to the Constitution Commission last week. The Fiji Labour Party, Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, United Peoples Party, newly formed National Youth Party are among parties who have confirmed they will stand in the 2014 election.

Report Teenage Pregnancies

The heads of the Cakaudrove and Macuata provinces have been advised to report cases of teenage pregnancies to the police. Even though the two provincial offices have not received any case so far this year, provincial officials believe the problem persists. Roko tui Cakaudrove Ro Aca Mataitini said such cases were rife in the province last year where seven primary school students aged between 11 and 14 years were reported pregnant. "We haven't received any case so far this year but we know there are victims out there who need our help," Ro Aca said. "At the moment, we are just increasing our awareness programs, advising mothers to play their role and teenage girls to look after themselves well." Ro Aca said it was everyone's responsibility to report cases of teenage pregnancy in a bid to control the social ill. "We sent young mothers to Suva last year where they have been cared for and looked after well," he said. Roko tui Macuata Sitiveni Lalibuli said the issue should be a subject of discussion in homes. "Parents also play an active role in disciplining their children because their teachings will shape their future," Mr Lalibuli said. "Teenage pregnancy should be talked about at home and mothers should constantly remind their children about the consequences they will encounter when they become single mothers."

New Parties Will Emerge - PM

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said new political parties that have not relied on race as their main driving force to get votes will definitely emerge before the 2014 elections. Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji needs parties that address real issues affecting people on a daily basis. When recently questioned by the media on whether he is aware of any new party, Commodore Bainimarama said people have to wait and see. Commodore Bainimarama said parties like SDL, Labour and United Peoples Party have nothing new to offer as they are used to the politics of the past from where they come from.

Eight members from the Panorama Team of the Fiji Beach Resort and Spa managed by Hilton went on an education trip and attachment at the Hilton Surfers Paradise and Hilton Brisbane and Queensland, Australia last month. Fiji Beach Resort and Spa training manager, Eremasi Rova, said having reached the finale of their two years management trainee programme, the team was given an opportunity to go on an educational trip abroad. Mr Rova said the group consisted of members ranging from line to supervisory staff in areas of food and beverage, rooms division, recreation and activities, spa, and business development and sales. With the key objectives of a crossexposure in related departments within the sister hotel properties as well as experiencing lifestyle in one of our core markets, the Panorama team members spent at least four hours of attachment daily, Mr Rova said.

They mainly observed and made friends with Hilton counterparts in Australia to identify some best practices that they could bring back with them to the Fiji propertys operations. He said the teams also got a chance to visit tourist sites, eateries, hotels, shopping malls, and experience some lifestyle factors of Australia during their trip. One of the key areas observed was the cultural difference and its effect on how service was delivered, he said. Guest expectations of service efficiency in Australia were very high because of the market it caters for, compared to our resorts more relaxed environment and its leisure market. Mr Rova said another notable observation was how all Hilton hotel properties maintained consistency in the application of Hilton brand standards. He said the team was able to bring back some best practices to offer some alternative strategies in how we serve guests from one of our key markets.

Fiji, UAE Pact To Eliminate Double Tax

Fiji and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a final agreement to eliminate double taxation on income. This move is aimed at bolstering economic ties and enhancing trade development between the two countries. The agreement follows the opening of Fijis latest embassy in the UAE last Sunday by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. The agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Filimone Waqabaca on behalf of Fiji and Younis Haji Al Khouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance on behalf of the UAE. TradeArabia News Service reports the agreement falls in line with the UAEs efforts to support the process of opening up to the global economy. This is through the promotion of the free movement of production factors, increasing investment opportunities and encouraging import and export operations, as well as avoiding the obstruction of free flow of trade and investments. It also aims to enhance the economic climate between the UAE and Fiji in addition to promoting the development goals of the UAE at the local level. Mr Al Khouri said: The signing of the agreement to avoid double taxation between the UAE and Fiji is an important step we have made to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries in the economic and financial sectors. This agreement falls within the framework of our efforts to consolidate and strengthen the economic and investment cooperation between the UAE and countries globally. These agreements have a positive effect on protecting and guaranteeing the investment, trade and economic cooperation between the countries. Double taxation agreements help to diversify the sources of national income and increasing the volume of inward investment. They focus on tax-related matters, prominent changes witnessed by the economic and financial sector, as well as new financial instruments and mechanisms of transfer pricing, the removal of most forms of tax discrimination and the reduction of some of the taxes that were imposed on foreign investors. They also provide a stable tax environment for foreign investors, leading to increased international competitiveness of the economy.

The Bank South Pacific Limited has achieved a consolidated operating profit of $255.20m for its half year ending June 30, 2012. The operating profit is an increase of 22.7 per cent on the consolidated operating profit of $207.99m for the same period last year. BSP chairman, board of directors Kostas Constantinou said the steady first half 2012 results followed solid 2011 full year results. "The conditions contributing to 2011 second half performance continued during the first half of this year," Mr Constantinou said. He said the bank had again performed creditably, posting an increase in operating profit before tax over the corresponding period of 2011. "After tax profit is $190.35m compared to $147.90m for the same period last

year primarily due to the growth of non-interest income resulting from the delivery of several strategic initiatives." He said the consolidated 12 per cent revenue was achieved while maintaining a controlled lending strategy that had seen interest income grow at a more than acceptable level. Mr Constantinou said despite all the challenges there had also been growth in the level of BSP group total assets from 10.24 billion at the end of 2011 to $12.37 billion at June 2012. The banks customer net loan has also exceeded to $4.23b and market shares remain stable. "Expenses to income ratio for the first half of 2012 stands at 48 per cent, compared to 58 per cent 12 months earlier," he said. Mr Constantinou said they noted that the current trend in the economy

BSP Profits

would continue to present further earnings challenges for the bank for the remainder of this year. "BSP is already experiencing pressure from its investment portfolio, which will impact second half earnings. Much energy is being directed to measures to preserve revenue stability and attention to operating costs remains very critical." He also announced that in keeping up with the underlying improvement in operating results, the board of BSP has declared an interim dividend of $0.19 per share which on a post consolidation basis represents 27 per cent increase on the interim dividend of last year. The interim dividend will be paid on October 26. He said he was confident that the bank would continue to adapt to challenging market conditions and continue to deliver a sound underlying performance.

Scholarship To China
The first-ever recipient of the Confucius Institute scholarship has left for China on a three-year study program at the Beijing Language and Culture University. University of the South Pacific student Meihua Luo was born in China and raised in Fiji since the age of five, left for China last week to study for a master's degree. She said she was awarded the scholarship for being an outstanding student of the USP's recently-established Confucius Institute. Ms Luo said she applied for the scholarship to study the Chinese language and culture. "I will be expected to study Chinese and culture and after completing my studies, I will teach the language to others," Ms Luo said. She said her postgraduate diploma in psychology from USP would help in her teaching career. "Having completed my postgraduate diploma, I believe my qualification will relate well to teaching," Ms Luo said. "Being out of my comfort zone for the first time will be a challenge for me, but at the same time I will get to experience being independent." Ms Luo is expected to spend her first year learning Mandarin and Chinese culture.

Fijian Grannies To Graduate This Month

Ten Fijian grandmothers who are undergoing 6-month solar electrification training at the Barefoot College in India will graduate this month. This was revealed by Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni who will be attending their graduation ceremony. Once they come back, the 10 grandmothers will be expected to solar electrify their villages, Luveni said. Workshops will be constructed and they will take on their roles as the solar engineers of Fiji to solar electrify their own villages. While in India, Luveni will also witness the signing of an MOU with the Barefoot College to secure assistance for two new projects planned for women in Fiji. One is about the manufacturing of sanitary pads using raw materials in rural areas at reasonable costs. If adopted in Fiji it will reduce our imports of sanitary pads. The second initiative is the production of educational toys for children in preschools, using recycled products such as plastic bags. Luveni said the two projects are in line with the governments commitment to create economic opportunities for women in Fiji.

The first Hindi movie shot in Fiji this year is in its post-production stage in India. Supermodel, which was shot in parts of Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka, generated much interest in the local community. It is about the search for a supermodel and the movie's shoot saw the likes of Ashmit Patel, upcoming actress Veena Malik and model-turned-actress Aparna Jadhav gracing our shores. Movie producer, Ravi Ahlawat, said the shooting had been completed. "After shooting in Fiji, the postproduction is now in full swing," he said. "I am planning my next film in Fiji after the release of Supermodel."

Another Bollywood Movie Shot In Fiji

Mr Ahlawat said the film was expected to be in cinema screens in either December or January. On the cast for his next film planned to be shot in Fiji, he said: "I am talking with the stars now and as something is finalized, we will tell you." Mr Ahlawat told this newspaper earlier the support he received from locals while shooting Supermodel in Fiji was overwhelming. He said about 90 per cent of the movie was shot in Fiji. The movie will feature a local businessman and his wife playing the roles of the lead actress Veena Malik's parents. Part of the movie was also shot in the couple's home at Denarau in Nadi.

Miss India Fiji Pageant Gets Underway

The 2012 Miss India Fiji pageant got underway in Suva with the ten finalists going through catwalk and public speaking training at TappooCity. The final of the Miss India Fiji, an affiliate of the worlds only cultural pageant will take place this Saturday and the winner will represent Fiji during the Miss India Worldwide Pageant, which is celebrating its 22nd year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia early March next year. In the lead up to the finals, the girls are undergoing a number of training and grooming sessions including public outings. Fiji Fashion Week director Ellen Whippy took the girls through the ramp walk and public speaking training. Pageant Director, Aliyah Jan says the pageant is not only to promote the Fijian culture and celebrate the Indian Diasporas around the world but it is also to help develop the participants through training. The guest lecture by Fiji Fashion Week is to help the girls in their preparation in terms of public speaking, posture, catwalk and etiquette," she said. The pageant consists of four segments, the introduction, Indian tradition, talent and a question & answer session. The Miss India Fiji Pageant is intended to provide entertainment and enlightenment about Fijian and Indian arts and culture to the audience. Over 30 countries are expected to be part of the Miss India Worldwide finals in Malaysia.

Arson Charge

A range of kids clubs and day care centres that allow parents to have their own holiday and head off on their own adventures, are another compelling reason why Fiji is the best family holiday destination in the world. Fiji continues to be the destination of choice for Australian family holidays and it is wonderful to receive this validation, Australian Regional Director, Paresh Pant said in a Tourism Fiji statement. Families who holiday with us always leave with a smile. With over 330 tropical islands to choose from, Fiji received approximately 345,000 Australian visitors in the last year alone and according to Tourism Fiji; over 21% of that figure was travelling with families.

A man refused refugee status in New Zealand has re-applied, saying Fiji's military authorities have worked out who he is and he fears arrest on his return. The Banaban man, identified only as BG, said after an Immigration and Protection Tribunal decision about him was published in February the military regime worked out who he was. The 45-year-old claimed the 5000 Banabans now in Fiji occupied the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder and lived in fear. In February, the tribunal, in a decision published on its website with his name removed, refused refugee status to BG. "The publication of the article caused (BG) and his wife and children to fear returning to Fiji," a Department of Labour report, written by a refugee and protection officer, said. The officer was considering the man's second bid for refugee status. The report said BG's sister met with a regime official involved with the Rabi Island community. He told her BG's name "appeared on the army blacklist''. "This meant that (BG) would be taken to the army barracks as soon as he returned to Fiji," the report said.

Fijian Man Re-Applies For Refugee Status In NZ

"(The official) advised (the sister) to tell (BG) not to return to Fiji.'' The official said the case was often discussed in the office of military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama. Discussion of it would "endanger the lives of the Banaban elders and community", the report said. However the report questioned the credibility of BG's sister's statement regarding an army blacklist. The refugee and protection officer said he believed some of the claims were "embellishments and are not credible". The report said BG had, since refusal earlier this year of refugee status, developed liver kidney disease that would ultimately require dialysis. The refugee and protection officer's report said it was accepted there had been "significant changes of circumstances" for BG and the refugee application was being re-considered. "It could appear speculative that the Fijian regime is aware of the tribunal's decision, let alone the identity of 'BG'. Even if they are, it could appear speculative that (BG) would experience any problems as a result," the report said. Refugee status is still under investigation.

Fiji is working to set up the Pacific island nation's first resource centre for women in Savusavu with support of the Australian government. "This will be the first centre of its kind for rural women in Fiji and I must acknowledge the vision and commitment of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama Cakaudrove, who in collaboration with the Architects without Frontiers from Australia has been working on this project since 2008," acting Australian High Commissioner Glenn Miles said on Wednesday. According to Miles, with funding support from Australian AID of 1.3 million Fiji dollars (US$742,000), the Cakaudrove Women's Resource Centre will provide local rural women with safe accommodation when travelling to Savusavu town to sell their produce and handicrafts. The centre will also become a key meeting point for women from Cakaudrove to receive training and assistance to improve their livelihood and enhance their culture in Fiji's northern island. The contribution of women to rural development is already well documented. According to the 2010 UN Women economic analysis report of municipal markets in Fiji, 87 percent of all market vendors were women and rural women in particular reinvest up to 75 percent of their income earned in municipal markets back into their villages on family wellbeing and community commitments. The centre will also be used as a training facility to empower and train young rural women towards self-employment, which will ensure that women living in remote parts of the northern island of Vanua Levu to have easier access to services over economic opportunities, health, nutrition and education. "Improving women's economic empowerment is achievable. This centre, once completed, will become the vehicle to do this," Miles said, adding Australia "is committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged women, men, their families and communities in Fiji". As Fiji's largest bilateral donor, Australia is increasing its support to Fiji to an estimated 100 million Fiji dollars (US$57 million) in official development assistance by 2014.

Consort Shipping Limited, operators of the inter island vessel Spirit of the Fiji Islands (SOFI), has called on its open ticket holders to ensure their tickets are reconfirmed before attempting to travel. This comes after passengers with unconfirmed tickets were not allowed to travel on the SOFI as the vessel had reached the maximum number of passengers it was allowed. The incident occurred as the vessel was about to leave Narain Jetty last Friday night for Savusavu and Taveuni. Consort Shipping finance and corporate affairs manager Adrial Prasad said open ticket holders were allowed to use them at any time over three months. "The open tickets are valid for three months, however, passengers must contact our officers 24 hours prior to

sailing in order to reconfirm the tickets for that voyage," Mr Prasad said. He said the passengers with unconfirmed tickets were asked to wait while those with confirmed tickets boarded. "After the passengers boarded, we accommodated those with unconfirmed tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis. Unfortunately, we couldn't accommodate a handful of passengers." Mr Prasad said the details and conditions of an open ticket were clearly shown on the tickets and said the whole process of loading passengers had been overseen by Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji officers. "All the passengers who were not allowed to travel on Friday have been rebooked for our trip," he added.

Journalists Urged To Take Advantage Of Lifting Of Censorship

Permanent Secretary for Information, Sharon Smith-Johns has urged journalists to take advantage of the lifting of censorship. Speaking at the conference on Media and Democracy at the University of the South Pacific, Smith-Johns said the Government is looking at journalists to again rise to the challenge of giving ordinary people information they need. She added that one will hear a lot about censorship and journalists in Fiji are too afraid to report fully and without fear and favour. Smith-Johns urged journalists not to use this as an excuse in not doing their jobs. She said the Government wants a vigorous media but with certain conditions that are a prerequisite in most countries. According to Smith- Johns these conditions are not to fuel racial division, not to threaten peace and order, not to damage the economy and peoples jobs. Meanwhile, according to lawyer, Richard Naidu during censorship when the public dont trust the media to come out with the information then they resort to other sources of information such as blog sites. He further added that during censorship those in authority would not know what people are thinking about them.

Iran And Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

Fiji and the Islamic Republic of Iran formally established diplomatic relations after Fijian Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola signed a Memorandum of Understanding with his Iranian counterpart DrAli Akbar Salehi in the Iranian capital Tehran. This historic achievement is a culmination of close cooperation and dialogue between officials of the two governments and the signing demonstrates the unwavering commitment between Fiji and Iran. At their meeting, Dr Salehi welcomed Minister Kubuabola stating that Iran had long considered Fiji as a strategic ally amongst the Pacific Small Island Developing States and that the two countries had a lot to offer in terms of further exploring and enhancing economic and development cooperation, Minister Kubuabola said that Fiji looks forward to strengthening this important bilateral relation with the view of advancing areas of common interests to both countries. This new development will enable economic relations and deepen collaboration between the two countries in the fields of agriculture, economy, science, education, tourism and culture. This new development also allows for the appointment of non- resident ambassadors for both countries. The establishment of this diplomatic relations is consistent with Fijis Look North Plus Policy and Pillar 11 of the Peoples Charter on Enhancing International Relations and Global Integration. This MOU also comes at a very important juncture when Iran is assuming the role of Chair of the NonAligned Movement. The diplomatic affairs of the two countries are being handled by their respective embassies in Wellington, New Zealand.

Coral Coast Shows Increase In Tourists

Amex Resources Limiteds bankable feasibility study for the Mba Delta ironsand project has confirmed the viability of the dredging operation over its planned 20-year life. The Australian mining company was earlier this year granted a 21-year mining lease to extract ironsands from the Ba River delta. Managing director, Matthew Collard, told the media that the feasibility study sets

out the plan for project implementation and civil works at their Lautoka port site. Works at the port are scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2013 and will incorporate the construction of a new wharf, storage shed and offices plus the delivery of all the marine fleet for the operation. Mr Collard said the construction of a sealed access road and perimeter fence are nearing completion.

fully-furnished classrooms. The Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, Takeshi Tanabe, officiated at the opening. Each classroom has new desks and chairs for the students and teacher and a new chalkboard. The project cost more than $160,000.

Hotels along the Coral Coast are recording high occupancy rate as they enter their peak season. Coral Coast Hotels Association chairman, Peter Hopgood, said most of their members were recording maximum occupancy rate. This is a positive outcome for the hard work staff and management of their member hotels put in, while trying to recover after being indirectly affected by the two flood experienced in the Western Division early this year, he said. Our occupancy rate has increased to ten percent compared to the same period last year, which is a good indicator that all is going great for hotels and resorts along the Coral Coast, everyone is busy and happy. Mr Hopgood, who is also the general manager of the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji Resort, said the resort had only one room vacant on Wednesday night.

This is to be expected around this time of the year. Not only has the occupancy rate increased tremendously, we have also seen an exciting increase in the number of wedding bookings, he said. We have now reduced our number of weddings to one per day so that we can give as much attention to the couple who are getting married. We have also recorded advance wedding bookings for early next year. That is a good sign not only for hoteliers in the Coral Coast but also in Fiji as our members are assisting other organisations and hotels in promoting Fiji as a wedding destination. Mr Hopgood said the fact still remained that Australia and New Zealand still made up the highest number of guests to resorts and hotels along the Coral Coast, with a few Asian countries tourists visiting Fiji once in a while. Association members are expecting a decrease in occupancy rate towards mid November.

2012 Export Awareness Seminar

Investment Fiji will be organizing an export seminar on September 15 to address impediments to exports with South Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Anti-Corruption, Public Enterprises, Industry, Tourism and Trade & Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum will be the chief guest at the seminar in support of Investment Fijis initiatives. A number of agencies including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Fiji Ports, Pacific Island Private Sector Organisation and the Fiji Revenue & Customs Authority have been invited to exchange information and provide solutions to overcoming barriers to trade with the PICs. This is the third seminar organised by Investment Fiji this year but this time around the seminar will only feature in Suva and is planned at a much bigger scale. It will cover specific areas such as Fijis trade relations with the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). This would include in-depth information on the Regional Trade Agreements, and overview and detailed discussion on the negative list and general information on improving sustainable trade development with PICs. Investment Fiji chief executive, Ravuni Uluilakeba said: We have been very successful in organizing two seminars earlier this year. We focused on areas such as Suva, Nausori, Sigatoka, Nadi, Labasa and Savusavu and it had been overwhelming to see good attendance. He said this showed the commitment people of Fiji had in growing the economy through improved exports. He also said: With the huge availability of resources in Fiji, we feel by creating awareness and identifying the obstacles to trade, we will not only be making better use of our resources but at the same time establish better trading relationships with the PICs. A number of exporters have already registered their interest to participate at this seminar and Investment Fiji is still accepting registrations and interested participants can register at Investment Fiji Office in Suva. Seminar registration closes on Friday, September 7. The registration fee of $50 per person covers the full day seminar, morning tea, lunch followed by an evening networking cocktail reception.

No Brucellosis In Meat And Milk Fijian Prime Minister Opens New Confirms Health Ministry Embassy In Abu Dhabi
Since the outbreak of brucellosis in cattle in June, 2009 in the Tailevu, the Animal Health and Production Division of the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) embarked on a campaign to test and slaughter infected cattle to get rid of the bacteria from cattle herds. A press conference was held by the Animal Health and Production at their headquarters in Toa Street, Vatuwaqa to discuss the progress on this programme. Director Animal Health and Production, Tomasi Tunabuna, said the testing and removal of diseased cattle was going well and gave reassurance there was nothing to fear as far as the consumption of the meat and milk of the cattle was concerned. People need not worry; the meat is safe and the heating processes for the production of milk will make it safe for consumption, he said. We are going forward with the removal of reactors and would like to inform the public that while the disease is dangerous because of the fact it could spread to humans, it can be avoided by restricting the movement of the cattle. He said bigger countries like Australia also had such problems with cattle and that they were only able to get through it because the general public was wellinformed on the matter. We would like to thank the farmers and the general public for all their cooperation and would also like to work closely with the media to assist us with educating the public on this matter, Mr Tunabuna said. He said there were a number of ways to deal with this problem but they opted to concentrate on the affected areas and remove the reactors from the farms. Mr Tunabuna said: If we were delayed or if the farmers would have not been so cooperative with us then the spread of the disease would have been worse.

but also nurtured a now-flourishing, state-of-the-art winery in Manukau, Auckland. As the company celebrates its 50th vintage this year it embarked on a road show, which started in May this year, with events planned for countries like the United States, Canada, Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe. Opening its doors in 2005, Villa Maria winery and restaurant is now one of the most popular outdoor concert venues and one of the busiest cellar doors and restaurants in New Zealand; encompassing of a high-end restaurant, cellar door and events space; a first of its kind. This in turn led to Villa Maria becoming the first New Zealand wine company to structure their wines into a tier system of quality and price.

E-Ticketing In Effect
More than 240 students of eight schools in the Central Division made their mark in Fiji history when they were the first to use e-ticketing cards in buses. A total of 97 buses have been installed with e-ticketing machines by two bus companies. Land Transport Authority (LTA) officers and Telecommunications Fiji Limited (TFL) officers assisted bus drivers and the students on how to use e-ticketing cards. LTA media spokesperson Alfred Wiliame said schools were for the first phase of this exercise. Over 2000 students had received e-ticket cards from TFL which was given to their respective schools. Each student with a card had his/her name and card number on it which is read by the console as soon as it receives the card. The cards and the e-ticketing console is controlled and monitored by the TFL back office where a transaction is retrieved by the system as soon as the card is swiped on the console. A student takes the card and gives it to the driver who swipes it on the console. The card is only accessible twice a day, which is in the morning from home to school and in the afternoon from school to home, Mr Wiliame said. He said the cards were post-paid and closed on each days transaction. Each day after the student had completed his journey back home he or she had to swipe the card again to close the process. The cards also have a validity which expires at the closure of the school term and is renewed when a new school term begins. Meanwhile TFL officer Vuli Senikaloni said students and drivers would continue to receive training by them until they automatically had it right. We will be monitoring the buses and the students on how they use the cards as we will assist them, A Class Two student of Stella Maris Primary School, Elai Phillip, said the system was easy, however the rush made things confusing for him on this first day. More schools are expected to join the e-ticketing process. Meanwhile TFL and LTA continue to hold talks with other bus companies to come on board to revolutionaries the bus industry with e- ticketing.

B1 Rating For Fiji MORTGAGES

Moody's Investor Services has given the Fiji government a B1 rating saying it reflected a low level of economic resiliency, low government financial susceptibility to event risk. "Some of Fiji's statistical indicators notably external debts ratios compare favorably against rating peers," the credit report said. However, the ratings were constrained by other factors such as low economic resiliency as indicated by the small size of our economy and a "very low GDP per capita", it added. "The government's financial strength is assessed as low because of the high ratios of government debt and interest payments to government revenue." The report said this was mitigated by two factors, which were that most of the government debt was held by the Fiji National Provident Fund, which would continue to invest in government securities over the medium term. The other factor was that the proportion of debt denominated in foreign currency was small, which meant that the government was not vulnerable to exchange rate risk or to adverse conditions in global financial markets. The negative outlook on Fiji was also maintained by Moody's, which thought that economic growth remained lackluster and had an adverse effect of the "trajectory of government debt". However, the rating could improve if the trajectories of the external current account balance and the government's fiscal balance improve. The Reserve Bank of Fiji revised its GDP growth forecast upwards in June this year from 2.3 per cent to 2.7 per cent. Announcing this revised growth projection, Governor Barry Whiteside said it incorporated the impact of the 2012 National Budget policies, the recent floods, revised outlook for the global economy and our major trading partner economies, as well as recent developments in the domestic economy.

Chinese Delegates Show Interest In Rice Farming

A high-level Chinese delegation specializing in rice cultivation was in the country for the last two weeks looking at options in which China can assist in Fijis current rice revitalization programme. The delegation consisted of rice researchers, rice mechanization experts and others specializing in the general cultivation of the crop such as pest and disease control and recommended fertilizers and chemicals for rice under irrigation and rain fed areas. Senior agriculture officer for rice, Jone Matawalu said the group was here to see for themselves ways in which China could assist the rice industry in Fiji. After a three-day visit to the rice growing areas up in the North, there had been some recommendations made by the delegation which they say will bring more efficiency in the cultivation of rice in Fiji, he said. Mr Matawalu said the group visited and held discussions with farmers in the Dreketi and Bua areas where the bulk of rice for local consumption is currently being produced under irrigation schemes. They had visited the Dreketi Irrigation stages one, two and three, Nasarawaqa Irrigation Scheme, Korokadi Irrigation Scheme and the Droca Irrigation Scheme, he said. The group also visited the Rewa Rice Mill complex in Dreketi and proposed a new rice mill in Dreketi that could be built with their assistance that will be smaller in size and much more economical in terms of operation costs. Currently a major problem faced by the rice farmers in the Northern Division which results in low rice production is the unavailability of labourers to work in the fields and the introduction of machinery for rice cultivation can ease this problem, Mr Matawalu said. He said the visiting Chinese delegation also indicated they would look into the issue of appropriate machines to be brought in from China to assist this farmers overcome the problem of labour shortages. Because of the high production costs the local rice at $1.50 costs more than the imported rice with price range from $0.90 to $1.30 per kilogram, Mr Matawalu said. This feasibility study would also determine how farmers can grow rice locally at a reduced cost to ensure the availability of affordable rice to our consumers.

MarkOne Apparel Spreads Out

Honouring the best Fijian companies operating in international markets since 1993, the 2012 Vodafone and Westpac Prime Ministers Exporter of the Year Awards will this year be celebrating 20 years of global recognition. The award measures exporters against their peers, based on the strength of their exporting, marketing and financial strategies. MarkOne Apparel Limited last year won the BSP Group Special Recognition Award during the Prime Ministers Exporter of the Year Awards. The company, which specializes in shirts, blouses, sportswear, work wear, school wear, dresses, shorts and jackets, has since last years award, moved into womens high-end fashion and expanded their capacity for sports clothing as well. Managing director, Mark Halabe, confirmed more expansion plans are in the pipepline. Ensuring that MarkOne remains as a world-class manufacturer of quality apparel is important for us, he said. We have plans to expand as our customers and markets take advantage of our ability to provide a service they require. Our gross exports to Australia and New Zealand are approximately $15 million while our aim to export to the United Kingdom market is another 10 per cent in the next 12 months. And although the company wont be entering the awards this year, Mr Halabe said they would remain a proud supporter. The awards are a way of recognition for all the efforts in securing new export markets for Fiji, he said. Fiji must export. A famous saying of Margaret Thatcher when she became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was that the UK must export or die! The challenge was enormous but succeeded so must Fiji. He said Fiji must persist in exporting its goods and services and the awards helped in the promotion of this nationally economically important fact. If the awards spark the idea that exports is possible than it would have achieved its goals, Mr Halabe said. MarkOne Apparel will however apply for the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 9000 accreditation for the business this year. Meanwhile, the awards this year will be held on Saturday November 17 at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. Applications for nominations close on Friday October 19, 2012.

Imagine buying something on hire purchase, knowing you have to make the payment for a fixed period of time, but just a week later learning you dont have to pay anything. In turn, the money gets returned to you. That is exactly what happened to ten lucky Carpenters Finance customers who bought their purchase from newlyopened MH Homemaker city branch (opposite Suva market) between August 17 to 26. These customers received cash for their purchase worth over $7000 in total through Carpenters Finances Win Back Purchase sales promotion. General manager, Alok Mishra, said these customers do not have to pay anything now; no processing fees, no charges and whatever they had deposited, would also be refunded. The promotion was for the MH Homemaker customers and this was specifically to promote the Homemaker City branch that just opened recently, he said. Carpenters Finance is planning on having another promotion during

Diwali or New Year. Mr Mishra said they might do it for the entire MH Homemaker around the country. Forty-year-old, Eka Marama, was one of ten winners of the promotion. Along with her husband, Lepani Ratu Golea, the couple purchased a Maxton DVD player. We feel happy to hear the news; life is hard with so many bills to pay so it was good to know that we have won something, Ms Marama said. Another winner, Pita Banuve purchased a Westwood three Division Queens Bed costing him $999 and was over the moon to have this money refunded to him. It was a real blessing to have won because I have been a customer of Carpenters Finance for 20 years now and this is one way the company is paying me back and it feels great, Mr Banuve said. When asked what he planned to do with the money he said: There are a number of things that I want but I might also use the money on a deposit for something with Carpenters.

Tappoos Donate To Worthy Cause

As the Tappoo Group celebrates 71 years of doing business in Fiji, they are also giving back to society. Group chairman, Kanti Tappoo, during the opening of their new juice plant, expressed the groups commitment to the country. First, Mr Tappoo announced a $12,000 initial donation to kick-start the fundraising for a new maternity ward at the Sigatoka District Hospital. Mr Tappoo then handed a $10,000 cheque to Deo Raj Raju, from Save the Children Fiji. This was from a collection made through charity boxes at Tappoos tourist-oriented stores nation-wide and topped up by the companys own contribution towards the fund. . The endowments were part of the Tappoo Charitable Trust that the group established on its 65th Anniversary and which has contributed both in cash and in kind towards various individuals, groups and charities supporting school projects, community halls, water projects and medical care. The opening of Tappoos new juice plant would offer a new range of health juices at their Eddie Hin Beverages factory in Lautoka. The Lautoka plant would produce the Tarumba range and rebranded Tampico.

Energy Minister In Malta For Irena Summit

The Minister for Works Transport and Public Utilities Hon Timoci Lesi Natuva is currently in Malta attending the upcoming International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) - Renewable and Islands Global Summit. He is accompanied by the Director of Energy Mr Epeli Nakavulevu. The International Renewable Energy Agency has been given a strong mandate to take the lead regionally and globally in accelerating the adoption of renewable energy as a key component of sustainable development. Through the provisions of its Statute, and the Assembly decisions to date, the Agency has been requested to focus, as one of its priorities, on the accelerated deployment of renewable energy in islands. In 2011, this work has been concentrated on technology solutions, and the geographic focus has been on the Pacific region. In 2012, programmatic activities continue in the Pacific region, but are also being expanded to encompass Island States globally. The Malta Summit will take place at an opportune time, as the efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions are at the heart of the global energy debate, under the umbrella of the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All and the UN SecretaryGenerals initiative Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL). Commitment to sustainable energy, however, is not a short-term endeavor; it will require a long-term commitment and combined efforts from the international community. The UN Secretary-Generals SE4ALL agenda sets three broad goals for 2030: ensuring universal access to modern energy services; doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable in the global energy mix. As part of this effort, IRENA is dedicated to supporting countries to achieve these ambitious long-term goals. The nature of the challenges involved in working toward universal access to energy and improving energy efficiency is well recognized. It is our conviction that the promotion and accelerated deployment of renewable energy will play a crucial role as part of this global effort. This is particularly pertinent in the context of islands, considering their unique circumstances and vulnerabilities. It is widely recognized that a new perspective and enhanced commitment are necessary to ensure a sustainable energy future. The European Island Agenda considers non-renewable energy sources as, provisional solutions, inadequate to solve in the long term the energy problems of the islands. Our meeting in Malta will give us a timely opportunity to examine these issues from the specific perspective of islands, in the context of the Year of Sustainable Energy for All, and the outcome of the Rio+20 Conference. While each island has its own distinct conditions and circumstances, islands also share a number of common needs and problems. Most islands around the world today are dependent on imported fossil fuels for the majority of their energy needs, especially for transport and electricity generation. For reasons of scale and isolation, energy infrastructure costs are higher, and the impact of oil price and supply volatility has been severe, exacerbated by the small size of local markets. These vulnerabilities accentuate similar challenges faced by other countries in general. Studies have shown that, in the span of six years, the increase in the price in petroleum has cost most Pacific Island Countries and Territories some 10 per cent of their gross national income. Similar trends are encountered by Caribbean and Indian Ocean Islands. On the other side of the globe, estimates indicate that, out of the total value of imports, energy often accounts for more than 15% in the islands in the European Union. Fuel imports thus come at a great expense and pose a significant constraint on development; they crowd out vital capital and social expenditures and inhibit much needed economic growth. Several Islands States have adopted visionary strategies and targets to find sustainable solutions to their energy challenges. Renewable energy sources have been shown to be economically viable in small island energy systems, since their viability is less dependent on size and fuel handling infrastructure than fossil fuel technologies. Some islands have become a lighthouse for the possibilities that renewable energy offers, by showing that their energy demands indeed can be satisfied mainly or entirely from indigenous and renewable sources. Key issues to be discussed: Realising the high potential for renewable energy to address the islands energy needs and access in a sustainable way; Pooling of knowledge and exchange of ideas between islands, with different levels of development; Sharing best practice, and showcasing examples of innovative solutions; The role of renewables in power generation and end use sectors; Possible areas of future collaboration; Ensuring that IRENAs islandsrelated activities correspond to the priority concerns; and Using the Rio+20 outcomes as a platform to draw attention to energy needs of islands and the potential that renewable sources present.

Fijis insurance industry reported another year of strong performance in 2011 despite the high economic losses recorded globally, according to Reserve Bank of Fijis 2011 Insurance Annual Report tabled Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama on August 28. In the report, Governor Barry Whiteside attributed the strong form by the local industry to stable investment income and the notable absence of severe catastrophes during this period. Whiteside said domestic insurance

industry recorded a growth of 6.4 per cent in gross premiums to $221.2 million, a higher growth compared to 0.9 per cent in 2010. He said improvement was noted in the solvency surplus of both the life and general insurance sectors in 2011. The introduction of micro-insurance was further enhanced as part of the national initiative to promote greater financial inclusion through the provision of affordable insurance plans to low income earners. Whiteside said RBF was pleased to note the increased effort of industry players in seeking to improve regulatory compliance and contribute to ensuring a sound and safe insurance industry for Fiji. He added RBF will continue to develop the policy environment conducive to the growth of the insurance industry, as well as enhancing its supervisory role. The 2011 Insurance Annual Report also includes highlights of developments in the international insurance market. Globally, 2011 saw the highest economic losses from natural

catastrophes and manmade disasters on record and the second highest insured losses ever. The total economic losses significantly increased from the US$226 billion experienced in 2010 to a massive US$370 billion in 2011, while insured losses were reported at US$116 billion.

Pacific Sun Improves Operations

Domestic carrier Pacific Sun says it has improved its operational performance on on-time arrivals, fleet reliability, and completion factor in August. "This year's marked improvement in operational performance follows on the heels of some very poor results late last year and in January and February, so we are thrilled to let our passengers and the public know that we have fixed our fleet and restored reliability and consistency to Pacific Sun's operations," Pacific Sun Shaenaz Voss general manager said. "Our disappointing results six months ago were largely the result of our decision to prohibit 18-seat turboprop DH-6 Otter commercial flights in adverse weather until our entire DH-6 Otter fleet was equipped with weather radar systems, GPS and new avionics equipment equipment similar to that found in our much larger and much faster 42-seat ATR-42 turbo-prop aircraft. "Thus, we are equally excited to provide everyone with another update on our continual fleet investments to enhance airline performance, especially the extensive upgrades we are currently making to all of Pacific Sun's 18-seat turbo-prop DH-6 Otters." Pacific Sun's on-time performance (OTP) for August was 96 per cent with year to date overall OTP performance (January to August) at a record-high 88 per cent. OTP is an airline industry standard metric which measures aircraft flight arrivals as being "on time" if they arrive at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time shown in the carriers' schedule. Pacific Sun's Technical Dispatch Reliability (TDR) for August was 99.6 per cent and Year-to-Date (April 2012 - August 2012) TDR performance was 99 per cent. TDR is another worldwide airline performance metric that measures if an airline's fleet is "maintenance ready" for push-back and not delayed by mechanical or other technical issues. The airline also recorded 98 per cent completion factor from April 2012 to August 2012, meaning almost all of the airline's flights were completed as scheduled, and not cancelled because of maintenance or weather-related issues. "To ensure public visibility and continued focus on our dramatically improved performance, as our board promised earlier this year, Pacific Sun will now report our internal airline performance metrics at the end of each month (as we did today to show August performance)," Ms Voss said. "I'm also pleased to report that Pacific Sun made a significant investment in additional avionics improvements to the first of our three 18 seat Turbo-prop DH-6 Twin Otter aircraft. "Our remaining Otters will receive their upgrades in the coming months," said Ms Voss.

$1.7M Vegetable Plant

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the opening of the complex The opening of a fruit and vegetable processing plant is anticipated to bring in over $35 million in gross foreign exchange earnings annually once it reaches its full potential. The processing plant will cater for the needs of the booming produce export market. This was revealed by Bula Island Food Supplies Limited's managing director Narain Sammy Naidu at the opening of his $1.7 million complex in Nadi. "The majority of this will filter down to ordinary farmers. "The success of our business is very dependent on the close to 200 farmers that supply us with produce for export every week. "Our farmers are from Lautoka and Sigatoka and as far as Taveuni and Rakiraki," he said. Mr Naidu added the complex would allow for business to expand and meet international requirements. "The complex will also provide an opportunity for the company to boost its weekly output and source additional markets abroad. "It will be fully equipped to meet the increasingly stringent quality and food safety requirements of destination countries we export to," he said. Situated in Carreras near Votualevu, the 756 square meter premises is equipped with blast freezers and packaging equipment and a designated space for Biosecurity and Health Department officers. The company processes paan leaves, taro leaves, cassava leaves, pumpkin, jackfruit and bora beans for export to Australia.

Social Welfare Assistance Under Reform

Fijis Ministry of Social Welfare, Women, and Poverty Alleviation advise that they are not in a position to make comments on each of the social welfare cases raised before the Constitution Commission. But recipients are advised to seek redress through their district and divisional offices. The ministry has advised that it is currently working on a reform agenda to streamline social welfare programs in Fiji. Permanent secretary Govind Sami has confirmed that the reform agenda is emanating from the review of social welfare programs by the World Bank Social Protection team in 2010. Sami said the reform agenda will eliminate the vulnerability categories (such as elderly, disabled and chronically ill) as a filter of eligibility and allow poverty benefit directed at the poor. He said they are looking at making the Family Assistance Program benefits open to all extreme poor individuals, subject to assessment of the welfare status He added final changes are being factored in and the new form is more transparent with clear definition and assessment processes. The two major programs administered under social welfare assistance are Family Assistance Program (FAP) and Care and Protection Program (C&P).

Prince Harry Out Of Hiding, Laughs Off Nude Pics At London Charity Event

PRINCE Harry has seen the funny side of the worldwide exposure caused by his nude romp in a Las Vegas hotel, joking of the incident with a cheeky boy. Alex Logan met the prince at an awards ceremony, celebrating seriously ill children and the doctors and nurses who care for them. When asked on camera by a TV crew prior to the royal visit what he would say to the third in line to the throne, the six-year-old Alex boldly replied Im glad youve got your clothes on Prince Harry. But the prince was told of the lunchtime news broadcast and when he attended the function he had a few choice words of his own for the youngster. You keep looking up at your mum, looks like your dying to say something but you know she will tell you off, he said smiling and wagging his finger at the beaming boy, who simply pushed a soft toy into the princes head instead. "'I heard you were on ITV earlier, you said something cheeky, let's not talk about that here'. Harrys attendance at the WellChild Awards ceremony in Central London

was his first official function since embarrassing naked pictures of him and an unnamed woman partying hard with strangers in his hotel suite during a holiday were published. Prince Harry looked relaxed, joking and laughing with the sick children, including Alex who is in remission from acute leukemia. His mother Debbie Logan, 39, was at his side when the prince came to visit. The prince, patron of the UK-based charity, told the crowd of parents, children, doctors nurses and volunteers, they were all too remarkable for words. "But never one to be shy in coming forward, I'll give it a go. You're fun, brave, inspirational, dedicated, professional, magnificent ... oh, and fun again," he said. "It may seem an odd thing to say after the patriotic euphoria of the Olympics and Paralympics, but I think you represent the very best of Britain. "Your spirit triumphs through adversity, and makes our every day worries seem very very insignificant. It is the example that you set us that makes me so proud to be the patron of WellChild."

The Japanese government will help pay for the disposal of debris washing up on Canadian and American shores due to the catastrophic tsunami which hit the country last year, according to press reports from Tokyo. Japan does not have to take care of such debris under international law, but in a report on Monday the English-language Nikkei newspaper said officials would announce a plan to provide assistance to the U.S. and Canada later this month. According to Japan's English-language Kyodo News network, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimara confirmed a strategy for retrieving the debris could be drawn up before the end of September. Beaches like landfills Experts estimate more than 1.5 million tonnes of debris were swept out to sea when the tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. The Kuroshio ocean current runs from

While most of this debris consists of smaller items, including a motorcycle which volunteers are attempting to reunite with its Japanese owner, larger debris is already costing authorities millions of dollars to dispose of. Earlier this year, the U.S. Coast Guard decided to sink an unmanned Japanese fishing boat after it appeared in March, floating about 275 kilometres off the coast of Haida Gwaii. And in June, a 20-metre-long dock that had torn loose from a fishing port in northern Japan washed up on a beach in Oregon. According to the Nikkei, Japan sees helping to pay for the cleanup as a "way of expressing appreciation for the outpouring of support following the disaster."

Mcdonalds To Open First Vegetarian Restaurant In India

The world's leading fast-food burger chain is opening an all-vegetarian version in India, in hopes of capitalizing on the massive population of non-meat eaters. McDonald's, perhaps best known for the towering, two-patty Big Mac beef hamburger, will open the vegetarian restaurant next year. It will be located in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar, in northern India, near the Golden Temple, a popular pilgrimage site. Rajesh Kumar Maini, a spokesman for the chain in northern India, told the news agency AFP that McDonalds is looking to cater to Hindus, who are vegetarian, and Muslims, who don't eat pork. "There is a big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants as many Indians are vegetarian," he told AFP. "At the moment, India is still a very small market -- we just have 271 restaurants in India, and across the world, we have nearly 33,000." According to reports, McDonald's plans to open a second location in northwestern India, near a Hindu pilgrimage site in Kashmir that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Typical McDonald's outlets in India offer a 50 per cent vegetarian menu. The McAloo Tikki burger, which has a spiced potato-based patty, is among the most popular menu items. The McAloo Tikki will be on the menu at the new all-veg location, along with the McVeggie, a patty made with carrots, peas and potatoes, and the McSpicy Paneer, a patty made from traditional Indian cheese.

Alleged drug cartel member Eduardo Arellano-Felix, 55, was extradited from Mexico to the United States to face charges of racketeering, money laundering and narcotics trafficking, U.S. Attorney Laura E. Duffy announced. Arellano-Felix was arrested by Mexican authorities in Tijuana, Mexico, on Oct. 25, 2008, after a gun battle with a Mexican Special Tactical Team. An extradition order to the U.S. was granted in 2010, followed by two years of unsuccessful appeals. Arellano-Felix allegedly a top leader in the Arellano-Felix Organization (AFO) -- finally arrived in San Diego. The AFO is known as one of the most notorious multinational drug trafficking organizations, controlling the flow of cocaine, marijuana and other drugs through the Mexican border cities of Tijuana and Mexicali into the United States. Its operations also extended into southern Mexico and Colombia. The extradition of Arellano-Felix

Alleged Drug Cartel Leader Extradited To US From Mexico After Nearly 3 Years
marks a major development in the war on drugs along our border and signals the official end of the notorious AFO. For the past 20 years, federal prosecutors have been working tirelessly to stop extreme violence across the border fueled by the AFO cartel, which has a long history of torture and murder. Everybody in this organization has had somebody killed, said former federal prosecutor John Kirby. Kirby helped draft the indictment against the Arellano-Felix cartel which has led to the capture of four of the Arellano brothers. Eduardo is the last one to face justice. I do have a level of personal satisfaction. Finally, Eduardo, the last one, said Kirby. Kirby said Eduardos extradition sends a powerful message to other cartels. "If the Arellano brothers can be brought here, anybody can be, warned Kirby. He also believes other cartels have learned not to make the same mistakes made by the Arellano brothers. "The violence and corruption was just too much, and was too out there, so I

think other traffickers might want to think, we want to be much quieter."

Mumbai Metro Bridge Slab Collapse; 1 Killed, 11 Injured

Children 'Knifed In Drug Attack'

A man has been charged with stabbing two children, one fatally, in their beds in the New Jersey city of Camden, authorities have said. Osvaldo Rivera, 31, was said to be high on PCP-laced marijuana when he killed a six-year-old boy and critically wounded his 12-year-old sister. Police said blood-stained shoes found at the time of his arrest matched bloody footprints at the crime scene. The attack came shortly after the drug mix was cited in another Camden death. A 33-year-old woman in the impoverished town was alleged to have decapitated her two-year-old daughter before taking her own life. Babysitter escape In the latest attack, six-year-old Dominick Andujor died while his sister had her throat slit as she slept. The critically injured 12-year-old girl fled the property and was found at a neighbour's home. A 14-year-old girl, who had been looking after the children while their mother recovered in hospital from a surgery, was not hurt. The accused told investigators he had smoked a mixture of cannabis and the hallucinogenic drug PCP before the attack, said a spokesman for the Camden County prosecutor's office. A spokesman for the Camden County prosecutor's office, Jason Laughlin, told the media that the combination of PCP and marijuana - known as "wet" makes people incoherent, hallucinatory and, in some cases, violent. Authorities are aiming to take steps to restrict access to the drug, he added, without specifying how that would be achieved.

A section of an under-construction Metro rail bridge collapsed on Tuesday, killing one and wounding 11. The incident occurred near Leela Hotel in suburban Marol when a huge slab caved in; disaster management department of the city's municipal corporation said. While one person, believed to be a construction worker employed at the site, was declared dead on arrival at the Seven Hills Hospital, another man is admitted in a critical condition with serious chest injuries. Five others admitted to Seven Hills Hospital and as many at Cooper Hospital are stable, sources said. Cranes and other heavy machinery have been deployed to clear the huge debris. The island city and suburbs received heavy downpour. This part of the overhead Metro Bridge

is on the crowded Andheri-Kurla road that leads to the airport. The collapsed bridge is part of the much-delayed 12-km VersovaAndheri-Ghatkopar corridor of the Mumbai Metro. Meanwhile, reacting to the tragedy, Reliance Infra which is constructing the Metro railway said in a statement that its emergency response team was at the site for rescue operation. The statement said, "We deeply regret the accident at the airport station metro site, which is being constructed by our contractor HCC. "Our emergency response team along with HCC staff is at the site to provide rescue and relief services which is the immediate priority." The company also clarified that the length of the bridge that collapsed is 15 meters and not 50 meters as was being reported.

Bill Clinton Officially Announces Obama's Nomination For Second Term

Widely popular former president provides incumbent with his most effective endorsement yet; Clinton: Obama saved U.S. from economic depression. U.S. President Barack Obama arrived at the jam-packed Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday, to be officially nominated for re-election by former President Bill Clinton. "We are here to nominate a president, and I've got one in mind," the former president jokingly said at the start of his speech, saying that he wanted "to nominate a man whose own life has known its fair share of adversity and uncertainty. A man who ran for president to change the course of an already weak economy, and then, just six weeks before the election, saw it suffer the biggest collapse since the Great Depression. A man who stopped the slide into depression and put us on the long road to recovery." Clinton likely provided the most effective endorsement Obama could have received, by a former president who is still enormously popular with Democrats, with Clinton, lauding the U.S. president for successfully balancing the budget, or, as Clinton put it, in cleaning "the mess" created by the Republicans. Recalling his own experience in dealing with a bad economy, Clinton said that "no president could have repaired all the damage in just four years," adding, however, that the situation was improving, and saying that if the Americans "renew the President's contract," they will feel it. "I believe that with all my heart," he said. Clinton went on to present the Democratic vision for the U.S. economy, saying that "Democrats think the country works better with a strong middle class, real opportunities for poor people to work their way into it and a relentless focus on the future, with business and government working together to promote growth and broadly shared prosperity. We think 'we're all in this together' is a better philosophy than you are on your own.'" Last week, Republicans claimed Obama country they want to live in. "If you want to be on your own, in a winner takes all society, you should support the Republican ticket. If you want a country of shared opportunities and shared responsibilities, you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden". "I know we're coming back," Clinton said, "for more than 200 years, through every crisis, we've always come out stronger than we went in. And we will again as long as we do it together."Of course, he reminded the audience, in order to make it happen, "we have to re-elect President Barack Obama". Then President Obama went on stage. The two hugged, waved to the crowd, shook some hands, and left. Obama's motorcade left the area before midnight, while delegates went on with a roll-call vote on the nomination. Clinton also referred to Obama's seemingly distant demeanor, as opposed to his closeness, friendly handshakes and wide smiles, saying Obama is "cool on the outside but burning for America on the inside." The first part of Clinton's speech seemed almost like a stand-up comedy routine that included occasional jokes and personal asides, prompting the crowd jump to its feet with applause and laughter. Calling Obama "a man who believes we can build a new American Dream economy," Clinton didn't forget to add that he "had the good sense to marry Michelle Obama." Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, was in the arena, listening intently to her, while wife and Secretary of State, Hillary, was on a mission to East Asia. Barack Obama gave his big acceptance speech later on Thursday. Because of the inclement weather forecasts the Democratic National Convention Committee has decided to move the event from the Bank of America stadium to the much smaller Time Warner Cable Arena, where the first two days of the convention were held.

President Barack Obama joins former President Bill Clinton onstage after Clinton nominated Obama for re-election during the second session of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. had already had enough time to prove his policies are working - and failed. Clinton insisted Obama inherited the problems from the Republican administration, exactly as he had. More than once in his speech, while playing the part of mentor, Clinton offered a lesson in arithmetic with an example. He compared between the Democrats' and Republicans' job creating records. "In 52 years, our economy produced 66 million private sector jobs. What's the jobs score? Republicans 24 million, Democrats 42 million." Clinton called the Democratic approach - "advancing equal opportunity and economic empowerment," saying it is both morally right and good economics. "Discrimination, poverty and ignorance restrict growth, while investments in education, infrastructure and scientific and technological research increase it." The major goal of this convention is to justify President Obama's record, despite the 8.3% unemployment, and that's exactly what Clinton did, arguing that he "laid the foundation for a modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses, and lots of new wealth for the innovators," while stressing that the problem is still far from being solved. In two cases, commenting on the Republicans criticism of Obama's policies on Medicare and on the welfare reform bill, Clinton provided detailed rebuttal, starting with stating "here's CHRISTINE GIRARD went what happened". Clinton on comparing between Obama's plan to reduce debt - and his opponent's. "I think the president's plan is better than the Romney plan, because the Romney plan fails the first test of fiscal responsibility: The numbers don't add up... People ask me all the time how we delivered four surplus budgets. What new ideas did we bring? I always give a one-word answer: arithmetic... Remember, Republican economic policies quadrupled the debt before I took office and doubled it after I left." According to the former U.S. president, Americans have to decide what kind of

India's Hitler Clothing Shop Owners To Choose New Name

The owners of a new Indian clothing store called Hitler say they will rename it after receiving complaints. Rajesh Shah, one of the shop's coowners, told the media that there would be a new name in couple of days. Jews in the city of Ahmedabad, where the shop opened last month, said using the Nazi dictator's name was offensive. Israeli diplomats also raised the issue with the Gujarat state government. The owners said they did not know who Adolf Hitler was when the shop opened. Mr Shah told the media: "Yes we are planning to change the name. There has been too much political pressure from the government." He said officials had promised compensation for the rebranding of the store, which sells men's clothing, although he said they had provided nothing in writing. His co-owner, Manish Chandani, told the news agency they had never intended to glorify Hitler. "I was not aware of Hitler being responsible for the killings of six million people before the shop's inauguration. This time I will choose a non-controversial name." Mr Chandani says the shop's name was a tribute to his grandfather who was nicknamed Hitler because he was "very strict". Others saw the name as a marketing gimmick in a country where the former German leader attracts unusual interest in some sections of society. "I am happy that the store owner

decided to change the name. I guess he realised that it was not the right thing to

do," Orna Sagiv, Israeli consul general in Mumbai, told the media.

B.C. Woman Learns Weeks Later She's Won $25M

A Burnaby, B.C., woman didnt realize she had won the Lotto Max lottery until she returned from vacation and checked her numbers to find she was $25-million richer. "I was at the mall exchanging cash before we left on vacation when I bought the tickets," said Lesley Vickars. "I didn't think about them again until we got home. I hadn't even realized that a winning ticket this large had been sold in Burnaby." Vickars had matched all seven numbers to win $25 million on the

Aug. 24 draw. "My husband thought something was wrong when I called him screaming. I was just in disbelief. It still hasn't sunk in." The winning ticket was purchased at the Metrotown Save-On-Foods in Burnaby. "We are still deciding on our plans for the prize," said Vickars. "I do know that we'll be taking off on another vacation." Vickars picked up the prize with her husband and two children on Tuesday.

As thousands of students return to school, Transit Police in Metro Vancouver are cracking down on fare evaders with a new law that gives them more power to issue and collect escalating fines. Under the new rules, both Transit police and Transit security will be able to issue fare evasion tickets, and about a dozen police and security staff were at the busy Broadway station on Tuesday morning checking passengers tickets. Tickets will still start at $173, but will now increase to $213 unpaid after six months and to $273 if the fine isn't paid after one year. TransLink will also be able to send unpaid tickets to collection agencies and ICBC will be able to refuse to renew or issue a driver's licence or vehicle registration to those with unpaid fines. Previously fare evasion was considered

a provincial offence and ICBC was responsible for the collection of fines, something they admitted they failed to enforce. TransLink is also installing new fare gates at transit stations to stop fare evasion, which are expected to start operating sometime in 2013. But transit police are already looking for one vandal who damaged six new fare gates at the Marine Drive Station just before midnight on August 31. Police say it cost about $750 to remove the graffiti from the fare gates. The suspect is described as a white male, mid-20s, six feet tall, 190 pounds, with light brown hair, a fair complexion, wearing a red baseball hat, a black hooded sweatshirt with what appears to be light coloured graffiti-style writing on the chest and black shorts.

Canadians Happy With Job Security: Survey

We seem more optimistic about the hiring plans and growth prospects of companies we work for than we were this time last year, according to the annual BMO Labour Day survey. The report, which was released last Sunday, shows that 41% of Canadians believe their company is growing and expect it will be hiring this year. Almost two-thirds are comfortable with their job security (up 13 percentage points from 2011), and four-in-ten expect to receive a raise or promotion this year (up 11 percentage points from 2011). Only 22% expect their company will be laying off employees. "Canadian job security is fairly good, with our 7.3% unemployment rate below historic norms," said Sal Guatieri, a BMO spokesman. "Canadians should expect wages to rise modestly faster than inflation, supporting household purchasing power, with the strongest gains in Alberta and Saskatchewan." The survey says those living in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are most comfortable with job security and are most likely to expect a raise or promotion in the coming year.

Police remind drivers to have a Plan B if going out for drinks New penalties for Alberta drivers who have a blood alcohol level of between .05 and .08 per cent came into effect on Sept. 1. The province says drivers with that much alcohol in their blood will be subject to an immediate three-day suspension of their driver's licence and their vehicle will be impounded for 72 hours. The penalties go up for repeat offenders. Currently, drivers who have a blood alcohol level between .05 and .08 are subject to a 24-hour licence suspension at the discretion of a police officer.

Tougher Drunk Driving Penalties To Hit Alberta Streets

Acting Insp. Michael Watterston of the traffic unit says Calgary police support the tougher penalties as a way of discouraging people who drink alcohol from getting behind the wheel. He said this is another tool for officers to impose immediate roadside sanctions. "Certainly the message here is for motorists to be aware of the new changes that have come into force and, clearly, it is so important for individuals who do choose to go out and consume alcohol to have a Plan B," he said. Alberta's Justice Minister Jonathan Denis says the second phase of tougher penalties is about making the province's roads safer because nobody has the right to drive drunk.

PNE Attendance Down From Last Year; Is It Too Expensive?

Jean Charest Bids Farewell As Liberals Lose To PQ

Au revoir, Jean. ( Means Goodbye Jean) Fifteen years ago, he bid farewell to the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservatives, choosing to wage battle with sovereignty in a province on the edge of another divisive referendum. Tuesday night, Quebecs Liberal leader Jean Charest said goodbye to the provinces top job after he was ousted by separatist Parti Qubcois leader Pauline Marois in the provincial election. For the first time in nearly a decade, Quebec will rise Wednesday to a sovereigntist government in a province no longer led by the federalist from Sherbrooke. The Liberal party instead becomes the official opposition to Marois minority PQ government. It came away with a respectable 49 seats to the PQs 55; and with 19 seats, the Coalition Avenir Qubec holds the balance of power. Looking out at the room tonight, I have a lot emotion, Charest said to a cheering crowd during a speech in which he congratulated Marois and encouraged supporters to do the same. Twenty-eight years of service in Sherbrooke. That service ended Tuesday night Charest lost his seat to PQ candidate Serge Cardin. But key Liberal figures, including Charests health minister Yves Bolduc and public safety minister Robert Dutil were voted back to the National Assembly. And as Charest pointed out, there was approximately just a one per cent difference in the popular vote. Still, he assumed responsibility for the outcome, though he did not step down from leadership of the party. Announcing he was very proud to be a Quebecer and to be a Canadian, Charest told party faithful that the result of the election speaks to the fact that the future of Quebec lies within Canada. He ended his speech casting forward to the future. We have done great things, we will do great things, and the Liberal party will always be there, he said. Charests defeat marks the end of a tenure that saw him help take sovereignty off the table, shepherd the province through a worldwide economic crisis, and in recent months, take on a massive student protest movement that garnered international attention. His law-and-order, no nonsense handling of the latter drew both intense criticism that he was infringing on constitutional rights, and accolades for cracking down on those wreaking havoc on Quebec streets. Indeed, Charest believed a silent majority stood behind his decisions to increase tuition fees and pass emergency anti-protest laws during the student crisis, and he cast Tuesdays vote as a plebiscite on the type of society in which Quebecers want to live: one where a student has the right to access their classroom, he said, or one marked by chaos and where no such right is respected. More broadly, Charest tried to sell a society defined by jobs and a strong economy, compared to one governed by Marois, which he claimed would result in referendums and instability. Tuesday nights outcome was by no means an upset. Liberals were behind the PQ early in the campaign, demoted to second place by allegations of corruption within government and the sentiment that the party had held power for too long. Near the end of the campaign, the CAQ, the centre-right upstart party led by Franois Legault, had bypassed the embattled premier in the polls. That they fended off the CAQ threat is among the victories the Liberals can away. But Charests defeat in Sherbrooke stings. Its where he was born, grew up, and where at the age of 16 he first showed a flair for politics when he was elected student council president. Charest went on to pursue office shortly after becoming a lawyer. At just 26, he was on Parliament Hill representing his hometown as a PC member of parliament. Two years later, he was cabinet minister. Then, at age 35, Charest became party leader. Tallied together, Charest has represented the people of Sherbrooke provincially or federally eight times. Though his ambition had been to stay in federal politics, Charest was nudged back to Quebec in 1998. While still in Ottawa during the 1995 referendum, he had become one of the most vocal advocates for federalism, ultimately leading to him being tapped to take the helm of the Quebec Liberals, and to take aim at PQ premier Lucien Bouchard. In his first election as Liberal leader, he became leader of the opposition. Six years later, he led his party to a majority in the National Assembly. Save for a brief period in 2007 when he led the provinces first minority government in well over 100 years he was a majority premier ever since. Two days before Tuesdays election, as Charests campaign drew its last breaths, the premier was asked about the life he did not lead, one where he didnt go into politics. What would he have done instead? Its difficult for me to envision what could be better than what Im doing now. It is a real privilege for me to be the premier of Quebec, he said. What better job could I have? Now, he must find try to find out.

B.C. Students Warned To Stick To Budgets

Financial advisors are warning British Columbia's students moving out on their own for the first time to stick to a budget, as figures reveal B.C. leads the country in consumer debt levels. While the average consumer in B.C. is shouldering debt of $37,000, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada estimates the cost of a fouryear degree in terms of rent, food and other expenses is more than double this amount at $77,000. Of the 6,500 students who moved into residence at the University of British Columbia over the Labour Day weekend, many first-year students admit their budgeting skills leave much to be desired. Mila Mezei, who is embarking on a four-year degree, says just managing her money for the first time away from home presents be a steep learning curve. "I guess just figuring everything out and, I don't know, there's some nerves with everything," she said. Diane McCurdy, a financial planner in Vancouver, recommends students keep a tight rein on their finances. "You have to really guard your money jealously, manage it carefully and if you come out of university with as little debt as possible, it's such a big leg up," she said. McCurdy encourages students who take loans to only spend the money on education-related expenses.

Yes, in most cases the Citizenship and Immigration Canada respects the principle of family unity so that a family will have one hearing and one decision.

5. How do I know if my Refugee Claim will be accepted?

There is no guaranteed way to know if you will be accepted since a single decision maker of Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board will hear your testimony and must decide if your claim is credible. That is why it is essential to provide documentary proof of your story and to be well prepared for your hearing, and to hire a lawyer who is an expert in refugee law. Since June 28th 2002, the government of Canada accepts refugees who fear cruel and unusual punishment, a risk to their life, or torture. However, your claim will not be accepted if your fear is one of generalized violence faced by everyone in the country, if it is based on a need for medical treatment, or

if you can obtain protection from the authorities in any part of your country. Furthermore, if the Refugee Board believes that you are a member of a terrorist group, have participated in human rights violations or have committed serious non-political crimes, you can be excluded from refugee protection. If you are a citizen in more than one country then you must explain why you cannot obtain protection in all your countries of citizenship. If you can automatically obtain protection in another country then you could be denied protection in Canada. Processing times are between 12 and 18 months.

Statement Ministers Kenney And Toews Issue Statement On Charges Laid Against Marriage Fraud Ring Participants
Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, and the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that 78 charges have been laid against 39 individuals involved in a marriage fraud ring: We wish to commend the RCMPs Immigration and Passport Section for their successful efforts in bringing charges not only against the alleged mastermind of the operation, Mr. Niang, but also against those individuals who allegedly chose to participate in a marriage fraud scheme designed to circumvent Canadas immigration laws. These charges underline that the Government of Canada takes immigration fraud very seriously and those involved in these acts will face serious consequences. The problem of marriage fraud is serious and will only get worse if we dont put measures in place that protect the integrity of our immigration system while deterring people from trying to use a marriage of convenience to cheat their way into Canada. Over the past 12 months, our Government has introduced a series of measures to fight marriage fraud. Canadians depend on an immigration system that is fair and secure. They dont want us to allow phony marriages to discredit our entire immigration system. That is why we will protect the integrity of the immigration system and weed out those engaging in this type of fraud.

An excellent source of vitamin C, plus vitamin A, potassium and fiber, tomatoes are high in lycopene, which works with other vitamins and minerals to aid in disease prevention. Research suggests that the combination of nutrients in tomatoes may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Cooking may actually increase the health benefits of this lush fruit because although cooked tomatoes have less vitamin C, their lycopene is more available and antioxidant activity is undiminished by cooking.

Eating just under a cup of mixed berries daily for eight weeks was associated with increased levels of good HDL cholesterol and lowered blood pressure, two positives when it comes to heart health, according to a study of 72 middle-age people . Included in the mix were strawberries, red raspberries and bilberriessimilar to blueberriesas well as other berries more common in Finland (where the research was conducted): black currants, lingonberries and chokeberries. The diverse range of polyphenolsa broad class of healthpromoting plant compounds that includes anthocyanins and ellagic acidprovided by the mix of berries is likely responsible for the observed benefits. Polyphenols may increase levels of nitric oxide, a molecule that produces a number of heart-healthy effects. One is helping to relax blood vessels, which subsequently results in lowered blood pressure.

One banana has 422 mgabout 12 percent of your recommended daily doseof potassium. The potassium in bananas helps maintain normal heart function and the balance of sodium and water in the body. Potassium helps the kidneys excrete excess sodium, thereby contributing to healthy blood pressure. This mineral is especially important for people taking diuretics for heart disease, which combat sodium and water retention but also strip potassium from the body in the process. Other good sources include sweet potatoes (694 mg for one medium), nonfat yogurt (579 mg for 1 cup) and spinach (419 mg for 1/2 cup, cooked).

Some of the strongest evidence of teas health benefits comes from studies of heart disease. Scientists have found that those who drink 12 ounces or more of tea a day are about half as likely to have a heart attack as non tea drinkers. Scientists also reported in 2009 that Japanese men who drank a daily cup of green tea significantly lowered their risk of developing gum diseasethe more tea, the lower the risk. Easy Ways to Keep More of Your Money

Entertainment

Some of the best things around may be free or close to it. Visit civic assets in or near your own town or city -- state and national parks, museums, galleries, memorials, zoos, aquariums, libraries, stations, waterfronts, etc. The list goes on! Also, check on base for discount tickets to local attractions. -When eating out, it is always cheaper to "lunch" than to "dinner." Not the same effect maybe, but definitely cheaper. This is a good thing to remember if you have your own business and want to take a potential client out for a business meal. Don't be embarrassed to take home what you don't eat, as long as you're eating with friends and family. At a business dinner, it's probably not a good idea. Restaurant portions these days are so large that you can usually get at least two meals from one restaurant meal. -For the smaller appetite, ask if the restaurant has child portions or half portions, or split an entree with your spouse. Even if there is a small charge, it's still cheaper than paying for two entrees and having leftovers from both. -Vacation rule #1: Go off-season and save big time. -Make money from work you love. Skills that grow from hobbies like furniture refinishing or repair are always in demand, and can provide a good source of second income. -Leave the driving to them. Going to grandma's via bus or train instead of plane isn't as fast, but it can be about half the price. Check train prices -sometimes, depending on the route, they're not a lot cheaper but will add days to your traveling time if it's a cross-country trip. -Don't assume you can find the best plane fare if you must fly. Use a travel agent to get you through the tangle of competing airfares. Or use a good Internet travel site with "intelligent agents" that update you regularly about

fares on routes you choose. -Travel as a group on vacation. The rates are much cheaper. If that's not possible, take a tour. You'll meet interesting people and save $$$ because the tour operators can negotiate better discounts. -Giving a dinner party? Make it a "pot luck special" and ask every guest to bring a dish. It's more fun and less money. A fun twist is to ask each cook to bring enough copies of the recipe for each family to take one home. If you have a guest who insists it's an old family recipe that she can't share, just accept that she's a party pooper and don't let it bother you. Some people just have to be more "special" than everyone else. -Kids in tow when you're on the road? Don't stop anywhere for the night where you can't put the kids in your room at no extra charge. There are plenty of hotels and motels that offer this. -Use your public library liberally. Why buy a book you'll never refer to again? Plus, you can use a library outing as a fun trip for the kids, and teach them how much information is out there. You can work on manners, too. -Want to try a cheap, fun family vacation? Try camping. People are catching on, so make your campground reservations well in advance, especially over main holidays. Gifts -Give homemade cookies, pies, cakes, breads, etc. You'll be remembered, and you'll save. We make grape jelly and fig preserves from fruit grown in our own back yard, and we have friends and family members who can't wait for the next year's crop! -Give of yourself. IOUs for services such as child-sitting or yard care are unexpected and always welcome. Trade baby-sitting services with a friend so each couple can have a date night! -Shop for next year's gift wrap and holiday cards after the December

holidays are over. You'll usually find them for 50 - 75% off, sometimes more. -Give hand-crafted or sewn gifts. They often mean more than store-bought items. -When shopping for gifts of any kind, be sure to do so only if items are on sale or discounted. Set aside some space in one closet in your house for a "goodie locker." During the year, as you find items on sale that would make nice, and inexpensive, gifts, buy them and stash them in the goodie locker. Then, when you need a last-minute

hostess gift, or realize you almost forgot someone's birthday, you can shop the goodie locker and know you have a nice gift that didn't break the budget. I carry this idea through to my Christmas shopping, too. All year long, as I see a gift I think would be perfect for a friend or family member, I buy it and stash it in the goodie locker till Christmas. Makes Christmas shopping much easier (I don't have to try to remember where I saw it!) and spreads the cost throughout the year.

Making sure your house is weatherproofed and insulated can save on energy bills. Sealing gaps around windows and doors cuts down on drafts in cold months and keep airconditioned air in the house during hot summer days. Using plastic sheeting to seal and insulate windows in the winter also lowers heating energy costs. Here are some steps you can take to weatherproof your house. Things You'll Need -Candle -Tube of window caulk -Caulk gun

Weatherproof Before Winter Arrives

Instructions

Seal Window Gaps with Caulk 1. Identify gaps around windows. You need to seal and insulate all of the windows in your house. When feeling for drafts, you can use a candle. Just light it and hold it near each window. When the flame dances, a draft is likely the cause. 2. Insert caulk tube into the caulk gun. 3. Cut off tip of caulk tube with a utility knife. 4. Gently squeeze gun handle as you move along the perimeter of each window, laying down a solid seal of caulk as you go. This will insulate the living areas of your house. Install Plastic Sheeting on Windows 5. Wash the inside edge of window panes with warm, soapy water.

6. Cut double-sided tape with scissors to fit along the inside of window pane. 7. Peel one side of the backing off of the tape and stick it to the window frame. 8. Peel off the exposed side of the double-sided tape on the top of the window. 9. Starting at one of the corners, stick the plastic sheeting to the tape, forming a complete seal. Leave about an inch overlap to be trimmed later. Move slowly across the window, sticking the plastic to the tape. 10. Repeat for the sides and bottom edges of the window. 11. Trim excess plastic with scissors or a utility knife. 12. Smooth out any wrinkles in the plastic by using a blow dryer. Keep the setting on low and slowly pass it over the plastic to shrink it to fit your window. 13. Repeat this process to seal every window in your house. This will ensure that you will get the most out of your new insulation.

Tips & Warnings

Many door "draft-stoppers" are available. They are designed to be placed along the base of your doors. These products are effective during winter months. Most home inspections will tell you the status of the insulation in your home.

ICBC'S Tips To Help Parents And Drivers Keep Children Safe As School Returns
Car crashes still number one preventable cause of death for children in BC
The start of a new school year is an exciting time for children and ICBC wants to help them get to and from school safely. Sadly, on average, 33 children (aged five to 18) are killed and 5,090 injured in 15,365 crashes every year in B.C. These tragedies are preventable. Were offering tips for drivers, parents and students to help them do their part to keep children safe on our roads as they head back to school:

Tips for parents and students:

Post these safety tips in your home and review them with your children even older children need to be reminded about road safety. Remove your headphones and put away your phone or other gadgets when crossing a street. Focus on the road so you can see, hear and respond safely. As parents, we can help by reviewing the rules of the road with our children and going over their route to school. Try to make lessons fun and interactive. You could teach your child to memorize the chorus of Walk n Roll, a song by childrens musician Will Stroet, which is included in ICBCs kindergarten to grade three road safety curriculum: Wear something bright; Look left and look right; Wait for the light; Make sure youre in the drivers eyesight. Use designated crossing points and follow pedestrian traffic signs and signals. Make eye contact with drivers, so you both know you see each other. Teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestrian crossing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible. Even at a crosswalk, be aware of traffic and always make sure that vehicles are stopped before walking. Dress to be seen. Wear bright or light coloured clothing. In dark or bad weather, wear reflective material on clothes or accessories.

to cross mid-block.

Tips for drivers:

Now that schools back, dont forget that every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30-km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing. Plan ahead and be alert. Driving routes will be busier, so give yourself extra time to get to your destination. Look for children near or around crosswalks and intersections. Always yield to pedestrians its the law. If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may have yielded to a pedestrian, so be prepared to stop. Watch for pedestrians when youre backing up. Before getting into your vehicle, make it a habit to walk around your vehicle to make sure no small children are behind it. When dropping off children in school zones stop and allow them to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child

Always walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk. This way, youre further away from the traffic. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and drivers see you. Be aware of parked vehicles in a parking lot or on the road. A driver may not see you between parked vehicles and you may not see them moving. Before crossing or walking through a parking lot, stop and look left-right-left around the parked vehicle. Encourage children to avoid taking shortcuts through parking lots. ICBC provides free road safety educational materials to B.C. schools to help students learn about road safety using fun and interactive activities. The materials are unique to each grade level from kindergarten to grade 10. ICBC road safety speakers also share their personal stories with more than 50,000 high school students across the province every year to help motivate them to think twice before taking risks while driving. This fall, ICBC is also launching its annual Your Ad Here contest for high school students to create a print ad about road safety topics that will be featured in next years school agendas.

Helping Kids Deal With Bullies

Helping Kids
If your child tells you about a bully, focus on offering comfort and support, no matter how upset you are. Kids are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying because they feel embarrassed and ashamed that it's happening, or worry that their parents will be disappointed. Sometimes kids feel like it's their own fault, that if they looked or acted differently it wouldn't be happening. Sometimes they're scared that if the bully finds out that they told, it will get worse. Others are worried that their parents won't believe them or do anything about it. Or kids worry that their parents will urge them to fight back when they're scared to. Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it. Remind your child that he or she isn't alone a lot of people get bullied at some point. Emphasize that it's the bully who is behaving badly not your child. Reassure your child that you will figure out what to do about it together. Sometimes an older sibling or friend can help deal with the situation. It may help your daughter to hear how the older sister she idolizes was teased about her braces and how she dealt with it. An older sibling or friend also might be able to give you some perspective on what's happening at school, or wherever the bullying is happening, and help you figure out the best solution. Take it seriously if you hear that the bullying will get worse if the bully finds out that your child told. Sometimes it's useful to approach the bully's parents. In other cases, teachers or counselors are the best ones to contact first. If you've tried those methods and still want to speak to the bullying child's parents, it's best to do so in a context where a school official, such as a counselor, can mediate. Many states have bullying laws and policies. Find out about the laws in your community. In certain cases, if you have serious concerns about your child's safety, you may need to contact legal authorities. everyday basis and also help restore their self-esteem and regain a sense of dignity. It may be tempting to tell a kid to fight back. After all, you're angry that your child is suffering and maybe you were told to "stand up for yourself" when you were young. And you may worry that your child will continue to suffer at the hands of the bully. But it's important to advise kids not to respond to bullying by fighting or bullying back. It can quickly escalate into violence, trouble, and someone getting injured. Instead, it's best to walk away from the situation, hang out with others, and tell an adult. Here are some other strategies to discuss with kids that can help improve the situation and make them feel better:

bully is nearby and don't go to your locker when there is nobody around. Make sure you have someone with you so that you're not alone with the bully. Buddy up with a friend on the bus, in the hallways, or at recess wherever the bully is. Offer to do the same for a friend. -Hold the anger. It's natural to get upset by the bully, but that's what bullies thrive on. It makes them feel more powerful. Practice not reacting by crying or looking red or upset. It takes a lot of practice, but it's a useful skill for keeping off of a bully's radar. Sometimes kids find it useful to practice "cool down" strategies such as counting to 10, writing down their angry words, taking deep breaths or walking away. Sometimes the best thing to do is to teach kids to wear a "poker face" until they are clear of any danger (smiling or laughing may provoke the bully).

-Avoid the bully and use the buddy system. Use a different bathroom if a

They may offer some helpful suggestions, and even if they can't fix the situation, it may help you feel a little less alone. -Remove the incentives. If the bully is demanding your lunch money, start bringing your lunch. If he's trying to get your music player, don't bring it to school.

Reaching Out

At home you can lessen the impact of the bullying. Encourage your kids to get together with friends that help build their confidence. Help them meet other kids by joining clubs or sports programs. And find activities that can help a child feel confident and strong. Maybe it's a self-defense class like karate or a movement or other gym class. And just remember: as upsetting as bullying can be for you and your family, lots of people and resources are available to help.

Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic that attacks the bacteria causing tooth decay. It could be incorporated into commercial dental care products, say scientists. Researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland, tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion. They found that enzyme-modified coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria which commonly inhabit the mouth, including Streptococcus mutants - an acid - producing bug that is a major cause of tooth decay. Damien Brady who is leading the research at Athlone, said: "Dental carries is a commonly overlooked health problem affecting 60-90 percent of children and the majority of adults in industrialized countries." Additional testing by the Athlone Institute found that enzyme-modified coconut oil was also harmful to the yeast Candida albicans that can cause thrush. Researchers suggest that enzymemodified coconut oil has potential as a marketable antimicrobial which could be of particular interest to the oral health care industry, according to an Athlone statement. "Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection," added Brady.

If you happen to be one of those who often find it difficult to fall asleep at night, the reason could be usage of cellphones or tablets at bedtime. Researchers in the US have found using an electronic gadget for just two hours before the bedtime can cause sleep problems. The new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute believes the displays cause melatonin suppression. Melatonin is the chemical that controls our body clock. Researchers believe that the teenagers are particularly susceptible to the problem. "Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent," said Mariana Figueiro, associate professor at Rensselaer and director of the LRC's Light and Health Programme. Figueiro says that stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime.

Using Cellphones, Tablets Before Bedtime Affects Sleep

Eating organic food will not make you healthier, according to researchers at Stanford University, although it could cut your exposure to pesticides. They looked at more than 200 studies of the content and associated health gains of organic and non-organic foods. Overall, there was no discernible difference between the nutritional content, although the organic food was 30% less likely to contain pesticides. Critics say the work is inconclusive and call for more studies. The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at 17 studies comparing people who ate organic with those who did not and 223 studies that compared the levels of nutrients, bacteria, fungus or pesticides in various foods - including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and eggs. None of the human studies ran for longer than two years, making conclusions about long-term outcomes impossible. And all of the available evidence was relatively weak and highly variable which the authors say is unsurprising because of all the different variables, like weather and soil type, involved. Fruit and vegetables contained similar amounts of vitamins, and milk the same amount of protein and fat - although a few studies suggested organic milk contained more omega-3. Organic foods did contain more nitrogen, but the researchers say this is probably due to differences in fertilizer use and ripeness at harvest and is unlikely to provide any health benefit. Their findings support those of the UK's Food Standards Agency, which commissioned a review a few years ago into organic food claims.

Prof Alan Dangour, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who carried out that work, said: "Consumers select organic foods for a variety of reasons, however this latest review identifies that at present there are no convincing differences between organic and conventional foods in nutrient content or health benefits. "Hopefully this evidence will be useful to consumers." Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler, the lead author of the latest review, said there were many reasons why people chose to eat organic, including animal welfare or environmental concerns. "Some believe that organic food is always healthier and more nutritious. We were a little surprised that we didn't find that. "There isn't much difference between organic and conventional foods, if you're an adult and making a decision based solely on your health." But the Soil Association said the study was flawed. "Studies that treat crop trials as if they were clinical trials of medicines, like this one, exaggerate the variation between studies, and drown out the real differences. "A UK review paper, using the correct statistical analysis, has found that most of the differences in nutrient levels between organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables seen in this US study are actually highly significant." A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "Evidence has not yet emerged that there are nutritional benefits from eating organically produced foods compared to conventionally produced foods. We will continue to review research on this subject."

Dining With Friends Can Make You Fat Dining with a friend could be bad for those on a diet - it tempts you into eating

Kidney Stone

Researchers led by Eric Robinson, psychologist at the University of Birmingham, believe it may help to explain why groups of friends often put on weight at the same time and why some women complain that they get heavier when they find a boyfriend - they start to copy his eating habits. "There is a lot of evidence that points towards this idea that your friends make you fat. If you have got friends or people you know who have put on weight recently, then you will put on weight too," said Robinson. "We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating. They tended to pick the foods that were high in calories," added

Robinson. "Recognizing that this effect is real could help people who are trying to watch what they eat. They could even look at a menu and try to decide what they are eating before those they are with to help avoid being influenced," the media quoted Robinson, said. The research asked 100 female volunteers to select from a choice of food consisting of healthy fruit and vegetables or unhealthy foods including crisps, pastries and cocktail sausages. They found that when they were eating with someone who had been asked to pick unhealthy options, the volunteers also picked far more of these compared to when they ate alone or with someone who chose healthier foods.

Kidney stone facts

A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline mineral material formed within the kidney or urinary tract. Nephrolithiasis is the medical term for kidney stones. Symptoms of a kidney stone include flank pain (which can be quite severe) and blood in the urine (hematuria). Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume and/ or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine. Dehydration is a major risk factor for kidney stone formation. People with certain medical conditions, such as gout, and those who take certain medications or supplements are at risk for kidney stones. Dietary and hereditary factors are also related to stone formation. Diagnosis of kidney stones is best accomplished using a CT scan. Most kidney stones will pass through the ureter to the bladder on their own with time. Treatment includes pain control medications and, in some cases, medications to facilitate the passage of urine. If needed, lithotripsy or surgical techniques may be used for stones which do not pass through the ureter to the bladder on their own. that about 12% of men and 7% of women in the U.S. will develop stones in the urinary tract at some point in their lives. About 20 million people seek medical care each year because of kidney stones. Most urinary stones develop in people 20-49 years of age, and those who are prone to multiple attacks of kidney stones usually develop their first stones during the second or third decade of life. People who have already had more than one kidney stone are prone to developing further stones. In residents of industrialized countries, kidney stones are more common than stones in the bladder. The opposite is true for residents of developing areas of the world, where bladder stones are the most common. This difference is believed to be related to dietary factors. People who live in the southern or southwestern regions of the U.S. have a higher rate of kidney stone formation than those living in other areas. Over the last few decades, the percentage of people with kidney stones in the U.S. has been increasing; the reason for this is not well understood. A family history of kidney stones is also a risk factor for developing kidney stones. Kidney stones are more common in Asians and Caucasians than in Native Americans, Africans, or African Americans. Uric acid kidney stones are more common in people with chronically elevated uric acid levels in their blood (hyperuricemia). A small number of pregnant women (about one out of every 1,500-3,000 pregnancies) develop kidney stones, and there is some evidence that pregnancyrelated changes may increase the risk of stone formation. Factors that may contribute to stone formation during pregnancy include a slowing of the passage of urine due to increased progesterone levels and diminished fluid intake due to a decreasing bladder capacity from the enlarging uterus. Healthy pregnant women also have a mild increase in their urinary calcium excretion. However, it remains unclear whether the changes of pregnancy are directly responsible for kidney stone formation or if these women have another underlying factor that predisposes them to kidney stone formation.

He ranks highest amongst the most loved ones on Indian television. But last week, there came a moment in his life when the charmer was charmed! Complementing his immense popularity, thirty female fans of television superstar Ram Kapoor landed in Mumbai from all over the world, especially to celebrate his birthday last week. Obviously, the actor is on cloud nine! It became a grand celebration and I simply loved the little creative gifts they personally made and brought for me. We partied all night! It was quite unreal but an awesome as well as humbling experience for me, he beamed. Whats more! Ram followed up this rollicking bash with another very special one for his family and friends before he gets back to the grind of his shoots for Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and the select movie roles he does in Bollywood.

Salman Khan Stayed Away From His Lucky Charm In Ek Tha Tiger!!
The lucky blue-stone bracelet on Salman Khans hand has never ever left him. It has always accompanied him wherever he went. However, this time, in the film Ek Tha Tiger, Salman did not have it around his wrist. The actor felt the bracelet wouldnt go well with his character of a RAW agent, in the movie. The silver bracelet was made to order for Salman by his father, Salim Khan some years ago and naturally, Salmans very attached to it. But he did not wear it in Ek Tha Tiger as it did not go with the character he essayed in the film that of a RAW agent. He wore it in Ready and in any film that it doesnt clash with his on screen character, says Salman Khans sister Alvira Khan to a website. It is heard that the blue stone that Salman boasts of shoos away bad luck and draws only good fortune, in short, the bracelet is a lucky charm to the actor.

Shahrukh Khan Vs Ajay Devgan: The Battle Is On!

Bollywood's Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgan make their first moves in the war over who will capture more theatre screens this Diwali. Diwali is a time when the biggest hits of the year are made at the box office, and actors and producers are known to have an eye out for a release during the festival even before their films begin shooting. A similar case is of Yash Chopras yetuntitled Shahrukh Khan-starrer and Ajay Devgans Son of Sardaar. It seems the studios producing the two films are trying their level best to muscle each other out of as many cinema screens as possible. Yash Raj Films has already cut deals with a majority of theatres to release its Shahrukh-Katrina Kaif flick in as many screens as Salman Khans Ek Tha Tiger. In a bid to undermine SRKs film, Eros International and Viacom 18, who own the rights to Son of Sardaar along with Ajay Devgan, have allegedly begun bullying distributors. Theyre apparently threatening to back out of screening their other productions OMG! Oh My God, Bhoot Returns, Aiyyaa and Chakravyuh if the theatre owners dont give as much importance to Son of Sardaar as the SRK-starrer. Word is that Ajay Devgan is desperately looking to surpass Shahrukh in terms of BO earnings, while SRK on the other hand badly needs a hit and wants to overtake Salmans Eid release Ek Tha Tiger. May the best movie win.

Contrary to the rumours that the Rockstar actor had walked out of the Dabangg directors next, Kapoor Jr confirms that he will act shameless in Kashyaps next

Basking in the joy of Ek Tha Tiger, Katrina Kaif has this time hit the headlines for all wrong reasons. The diva who returned from Dhoom 3 Chicago shoot has violated the airport rules by re-entering the terminal. Katrina Kaif on Sunday landed at Mumbai international airport at 5 pm. She walked through the green channel carrying no luggage. Kat who was accompanied by her two assistants P Chaddha and Arun Sharma suddenly remembered that she had forgotten to collect her luggage signed in her name. She reportedly sent her two assistants back to the terminal to collect her forgotten language. Two assistants of Kat were caught by airport officials when they tried to walk out with Katrina's bags consisting

an iPad, undeclared cash amounting to Rs 30,000 and two bottles of whisky which they had purchased from a dutyfree shop. P Chaddha was asked to pay penalty of Rs 2000 and Arun Sharma was fined for Rs 10,000 as penalty under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, which limits the amount of Indian currency a passenger can carry abroad. Katrina Kaif without entering into the trouble left the airport. However, airport officials have claimed that Katrina will be called back to give an explanation about the alleged violation of airport protocol. Celebrities often complain that they are targeted by Customs. But, they should realise that everyone is equal in the eyes of law, an official told.

We found it hard to believe that Viacom 18 had pulled out of Abhinav Kashyaps Besharam. After all it is one production house that is backing many ambitious projects and has become one of the names to reckon with, as far as Bollywood is concerned. Our disbelief was also fueled by the fact that Besharam had Ranbir Kapoor playing the title role, and he is the hottest property in B-town these days. No doubt he is not in the league of the Khans yet, but he is definitely a major draw at the BO. RK Jr, who is busy promoting his forthcoming film, Barfi! These days,

didnt react to the talk about him walking out of Besharam. But we were relieved when he recently said, Besharam is Abhinav Kashyaps film and I have not left it. These are just rumours. Naysayers are still going around town saying that the film has been shelved, and there has been no statement from Viacom 18 yet. But the fact is that Kashyap is busy looking for a leading lady for Ranbir. While any babe would go out on a limb to share screen space with the Kapoor scion, we hear that the director is considering the possibility of casting a newbie.

Sallu And Preity Look Superb Together In The Song Kudiye Di Kurti!
Sallu looks charming in the promos of Kudiye di kurti, the song he specially shot for his friend Preity Zinta for her debut production Ishkq In Paris. Preity said, I love Salman for being part of my first film as a producer. First experiences are always the most memorable and special and he has rocked the movie for me by looking so handsome and super hot. Composed by duo Sajid-Wajid, the song is part of a wedding sequence where Salman Khan, the star, is invited for his celebrity presence.

Early influences

To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia. A bubbling, bustling melting pot of races and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony.

The earliest evidence of human life in the region is a 40,000-year-old skull found in Sarawaks Niah Caves. But it was only around 10,000 years ago that the aboriginal Malays, the Orang Asli, began moving down the peninsula from a probable starting point in southwestern China. By the 2nd century AD, Europeans were familiar with Malaya, and Indian traders had made regular visits in their search for gold, tin and jungle woods. Within the next century Malaya was ruled by the Funan Empire, centered in whats now Cambodia, but more significant was the domination of the Sumatra-based Srivijayan empire between the 7th and 13th centuries. In 1405 the Chinese admiral Cheng Ho arrived in Melaka with promises to the locals of protection from the Siamese encroaching from the north. With Chinese support, the power of Melaka extended to include most of the Malay Peninsula. Islam arrived in Melaka around this time and soon spread through Malaya.

European influence

Melakas wealth and prosperity attracted European interest and it was taken over by the Portuguese in 1511, then the Dutch in 1641 and the British in 1795. In 1838 James Brooke, a British adventurer, arrived to find the Brunei sultanate fending off rebellion from inland tribes. Brooke quashed the rebellion and in reward was granted power over part of Sarawak. Appointing himself Raja Brooke, he founded a dynasty that lasted 100 years. By 1881 Sabah was controlled by the British government, which eventually acquired Sarawak after WWII when the third Raja Brooke realised he couldnt afford the areas up-keep. In the early 20th century the British brought in Chinese and Indians, which radically changed the countrys racial make-up.

relatively peaceful and cooperative. Led from 1981 by outspoken Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysias economy grew at a rate of over 8% per year until mid-1997, when a currency crisis in neighbouring Thailand plunged the whole of Southeast Asia into recession. After 22 momentous years, Dr Mahathir Mohamad retired on 31 October 2003. He handed power to his anointed successor, Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi, who went on to convincingly win a general election in March 2004. Since this win, the new prime minister has increasingly been criticised by Mahathir for degrading the freedom of the press and for scrapping projects such as a new bridge between Malaysia and Singapore that would have replaced the existing causeway.

This is a challenging adventure, and those interested to experience via ferrata on Mount Kinabalu should note that the beginner's route will let the climber take their first experience along the granite walls of Mount Kinabalu (a journey of about 23 hours). Independence to the current day

Home to prehistoric rainforests and a melting pot of culture, Malaysia is an amazing country to discover. Here are some picks of what to see, do and experience in Malaysia.

Malaya achieved merdeka (independence) in 1957, but it was followed by a period of instability due to an internal Communist uprising and an external confrontation with neighbouring Indonesia. In 1963 the north Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak, along with Singapore, joined Malaya to create Malaysia. In 1969 violent interracial riots broke out, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, and hundreds of people were killed. The government moved to dissipate the tensions, which existed mainly between the Malays and the Chinese. Present-day Malaysian society is

Mt Kinabalu Via Ferrata, Sabah

Via ferrata (or iron road in Italian), is a mountain path consisting of a series of rungs, rails and cables embracing the rock face. There are more than 300 via ferrata routes around the world and the world's highest via ferrata, can now be found on Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia, whereby the highest point starts at 3,400 m and ends at 3,800 m. This is the first time that the sport of via ferrata climbing is being introduced in Asia. An activity for everyone, the via ferrata is devised to give people with little or no climbing experience access to rock faces normally reached by mountaineers and rock climbers. There

There are some among us who cannot fathom the use of a small pickup truck. Whether they need it for work or just because they like to look over every other vehicle on the road, the threequarter or full-ton pickup is the only one that counts. For those people, theres a Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Actually, that model Silverado will only appeal to Chevy loyalists, because pickup truck buyers are probably the most loyal in the world. I could sit here and write about how much better the Silverado 2500HD is than the Ford Super Duty F-250 or the Ram 2500, and the Chevy people would think to themselves Damn straight, while the Ford and Ram loyalists would think This guys hauling a bedload of crap. And the Chevy people are reading this to validate their beliefs while the Ford and Ram people are anticipating the Chevy falling on its shiny face. Its a no win situation for writers when evaluating full-sized pickups, so Ill just say that if big things come in small packages, then humongous things come in big packages. The Chevy Silverado 2500HD is big. Not just big as in full-sized, but big as in massive. Everything about it is big big grille, big bulging hood, big doors, big roomy seats front and rear, big bed (which is nearly full width, unlike a competitor who has innovative bedwall storage that noticeably narrows the bed width). Big, big, big. Its got a big engine, too 6.6-litres of Duramax diesel V8 with enough torque (765 lb.-ft. of enough) to not only yank out stumps, it will probably yank down the tree in order to avoid pulling out the stump. Power is sent to either the rear axle or both front and rear axles by an Allison six-speed automatic (thats the one that reportedly goes into tanks the 2500 HD could probably haul a tank, too). The transfer case is a dial on the

dash. Remember the days when you had to get out of the cabin and turn a little dial on the front wheel hubs to make sure the wheels would turn with the axle when you were in four wheel drive mode? Same principle on this truck, except that the little dial is on the dash. The Silverado 2500HD is shiny too chrome grille, chrome bumpers, chrome running boards, chrome wheels. About the biggest challenge I encounter is taking pictures without finding myself in the shot (and Im sure youll see me in a couple photos). Yep, even worse than trying to climb up into the sucker (which admittedly is not an issue with the pillar mounted handles and running boards). Yep, even worse than loading up 1,000 kg worth of stuff to take to the dump. Yep, even worse than climbing up into the bed to push all the trash out. The latest presents a bit of conundrum the Ford has a pull out step and a fold-down grab handle to help you step up, but the function gets in the way of practicality (you have to park farther away from dumpster; you have to fold the pole back down; etc. Its not a problem, if you absolutely must have it, but for somebody new to the feature, it takes a bit getting used to. But despite its hugeness, the Silverado HD is a pretty comfortable vehicle, and not just in terms of space. The rear seat is roomier than that of some stretch limos, but its also nicely padded so you dont actually feel as if youre riding in a truck (except for the telltale signs, such as the grinding engine and pitchy ride). If you need a place to stow some things out of the elements, the rear seat bottoms easily fold up to create a pretty high and wide interior cargo hold. The Silverado 2500HD will cart away pretty much anything you need to take. And why not? When you got the size, everything else is easy.

Save Money On Lighting

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and require special handling if they are broken. CFLs should be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers recycle CFLs for free. LED bulbs are rapidly expanding in household use. ENERGY STARqualified LEDs use only about 20%-25% of the energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. They come in a variety of colors, and some are dimmable or offer convenient features such as daylight and motion sensors. In addition to standard screw-in bulbs, you'll find LEDs in desk lamps, kitchen under-cabinet lighting, and even holiday light strings. Indoor Lighting Tips Replacing 15 inefficient incandescent bulbs in your home with energy-saving bulbs could save you about $50 per year. For the greatest savings, replace your old incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs. Visit ENERGY STAR to find the right light bulbs for your fixtures. They are available in sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture and provide the greatest savings in fixtures that are on for a long time each day. When remodeling, look for recessed light fixtures or "cans" which are rated for contact with insulation and are air tight. When replacing incandescent bulbs from recessed light fixtures, use energy-efficient bulbs that are rated for that purpose. For example, the heat buildup in down lights will significantly shorten the life of spiral CFLs. Consider purchasing ENERGY STAR-qualified fixtures. They are available in many styles; distribute light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures, and some offer convenient features such as dimming. Controls such as timers and photocells save electricity by turning lights off when not in use. Dimmers save electricity when used to lower light levels. Be sure to select products that are compatible with the energy-efficient bulbs you want to use. Keep your curtains or shades open to use day lighting instead of turning on lights. For more privacy, use light-colored, looseweave curtains to allow daylight into the room. Also, decorate with lighter colors that reflect daylight.

An average household dedicates about 6% of its energy budget to lighting. Switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. Timers and motion sensors save you even more money by reducing the amount of time lights are on but not being used.

Tips: Indoor Lighting

You have many choices in energyefficient lighting. The most popular light bulbs available are halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although they can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, over their lifetime they save you money, because they use less energy. Energy-Saving (also called Halogen) Incandescent Lighting Energy-saving, or halogen, incandescent light bulbs are about Try out these handy tips for trouble free time in kitchen. Avoid sticky rice Wash the rice a few times until the water runs clear. Remove all the water until no water remains. Let it sit for 20 minutes. This will remove all the starch and help the rice to remain separate. Also adding a few drops of lemon juice to the rice while cooking, you will find that the grains of rice will tend to remain separate.

25% more efficient and can last up to three times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. They are available in a wide range of shapes and colors, and can be used with dimmers. CFL Lighting CFL Bulbs. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs use about 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescent. CFL bulbs last about 10 times longer and use about one-fourth the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs. A typical CFL can pay for itself in energy savings in less than 9 months and continue to save you money each month. You can buy CFLs that offer the same brightness and colors as traditional incandescent bulbs. Some CFLs are encased in a cover to further diffuse the light and provide a similar shape to traditional incandescent bulbs. pre-preparation. Make masalas ahead of the time. in the Paralympics is an enormous achievement. At the international level, it doesnt get much better than this, the Prime Minister said. I congratulate Iliesa for his strength, his dedication and commitment to his own goal of winning gold and being the best in his sports. In paying tribute, the head of government said that Delana's perseverance to succeed and to make a name for himself is something that every Fijian should aspire to. Bayside Club In Vancouver Helps Local Teams

The Bayside Rugby Club in Vancouver, Canada has been donating rugby jerseys to teams in Fiji for the past three years. Past recipients of the donations were the Qauia and Ratu Filise rugby clubs. Adi Nani Vulaca, who has been living in Canada for the past 20 years, presented the jerseys to the vanua of Namara over the weekend. The club has been doing it for three years and they aim to make it an annual event,Adi Nani said. Some Fijians play for the team and is managed by Lau native, Petaia Usakilakeba. Adi Nani said the donation this year was more compared to previous years because 7s legends Waisale Serevi and Ben Gollings also contributed. Serevi gave 13 rugby balls, socks and more,Adi Nani said. Gollings also contributed and we are grateful to the two rugby legends.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will ask the owners for authorization to lock the players out at a board of governors meeting a couple of days before the current CBA expires, according to the New York Post. No negotiating sessions are scheduled for this week even though the clock is slowly ticking towards Sept. 15, when Bettman will shut down the league if he's granted approval. Talks broke down last week and show no signs of resuming. The Post reported that the NHL has rejected the NHLPA's offer to meet again to talk about "non-core" economic issues. "We actually don't think that meeting on the other issues while the main

economic issues remain uncertain would be particularly constructive or productive in terms of resolving those issues," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email to The Post. "A lot has already been done and most of those issues are teed up for resolution if the main issues can be addressed." One of the NHL's proposals included a management rights clause that would allow the league to have total control over things like realignment, scheduling and the playoff format, according to the Post. Last season, the NHLPA scuttled the league's proposed four-conference format and playoff change, which would have come into effect in 2012-13.

The Fiji Football Association has warned the districts to adhere to the rules when hosting Fiji SUN/GP Batteries National Football League matches. Competitions manager Jainendra Sukhu said some Super Premier teams failed to have sound systems in order to play their sponsors jingle before their match and during halftime interval. There is a mandatory fine of $200 and all those districts that failed to honour our sponsor will be fined, Sukhu said. Furthermore it is noted that First Aid personnel with stretchers are not available during national league matches. The Vancouver Canucks goaltender, who is awaiting a trade after losing his No. 1 job to Cory Schneider, skated near his off-season home Tuesday and made it clear during an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel that his preference was to return to the Panthers. (Florida) makes sense for myself, for my career and my family, Luongo told the paper. That being said, theres obvious other options as well. This is a preferred location for obvious reasons but Im not shutting the door on other possibilities if it comes up. Toronto has been speculated as a possible landing spot for him. Current Panthers goalies Scott Clemmensen and Jose Theodore took to the ice for an informal practice with several teammates just moments after Luongo had finished his own skate. Its useless energy wasted on speculating what might happen with him, Clemmensen said of Luongo. We pretty much have the same lineup that we had last year, as far as goalies are concerned.

Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks Goalie, Says Return To Florida Panthers Makes Sense

TImes sporTs

Friday September 7, 2012

Roberto Luongo says it just makes sense for him to return to the Florida Panthers. I feel like we did a great job last year, the three of us who played at this level anyway. I feel confident and very excited to be in the same kind of scenario. Luongo spent five seasons in Florida between 2001 and 2006, when he was dealt to Vancouver. He and his wife return to the area every summer with their young children. The 33-year-old has 10 years remaining

on his contract at a cap hit of $5.33 million and holds a no-trade clause. Luongo posted a 31-14-8 record last season with a .919 save percentage and 2.41 goals-against average. Hes dealt with speculation about his future in Vancouver for the past two seasons and it reached a new pitch when Schneider took over the No. 1 job during a firstround playoff loss to Los Angeles in the spring. Luongo, who backstopped Canada to gold at the Vancouver Olympics, maintains that he wants to be in a position where he gets the majority of starts. The veteran is willing to be patient while the Canucks look for a trade that makes sense. Youre dealt different situations in life, said Luongo. Youve got to handle them the right way. I dont know whats going to happen this year. The only thing I could do is work hard and have a positive attitude. At the end of the day, Im sure everything is going to work out.
