Boyne City 18,

Kent City 13
BOYNE CITY The Boyne City
football team helped cap a very
successful first-ever Rambler Day
at Boyne City with a 18-13 victory
over Kent City on August 30, as
the soccer, volleyball and JV foot-
ball teams came away victorious.
The final contest however, was
not an easy one.
Boyne trailed 13-9 at halftime,
before using a nine point third
quarter, along with some solid de-
fense in overcoming a trio of
turnovers in the red zone to come
away with the win.
Very pleased with how the
kids reacted through the adver-
sity, when things went wrong,
Rambler coach David Hills said.
They settled down and re-
sponded well.
With the victory, Boyne im-
proves to 2-0.
The Ramblers got on the board
first, as freshman Malik Smith
crossed the goal line from 5 yards
out at the 7:40 mark of the first
for a 6-0 lead, the extra-point at-
tempt was no good.
On the ensuing drive Kent
City's Shane Rodenberg was able
to punch it in with a 45-yard run,
along with the extra-point with
3:59 remaining in the quarter for
a 7-6 Eagles lead.
Boyne went back on top 9-7 at
10:33 of the second quarter when
senior place-kicker Austin Gard-
ner split the uprights for a 32-
yard field goal.
The Ramblers would make a
crucial defensive stand at their
own 12 yard line with 4:49 left in
the half and take over on downs,
but after a Boyne punt, Kent City
quarterback/running back
combo of Jake Krueger/Roden-
berg moved the ball 75-yards to
paydirt, capped by a 2-yard score
by Rodenberg with 14.1 seconds
remaining in the half for a 13-9
Eagle lead.
Boyne City stopped the Eagles
opening possession of the third
quarter and forced Kent City to
punt. Rambler sophomore Maceo
Vroman scooped the punt on a
roll, maneuvered his way
through a couple of would be
tacklers and exploded into the
open field for a 63-yard score.
Gardner's extra-point attempt
was good, giving Boyne a 16-13
lead with 9:53 remaining in the
third.
Our special teams gave us a
boost, Hills added. From the
kicking to the returning, the kids
made us look good.
After exchanging a couple of
possessions, the Ramblers found
themselves driving towards the
end-zone but turned the ball over,
fumbling inside the 5-yard line.
But on the ensuing Eagle snap,
Rambler senior Brady Calo
busted through the line and
wrapped up Kent City running
back Chad Brown in the end-zone
for a safety, pushing the Boyne
lead to 18-13 with 3:51 remaining
in the quarter.
With the Eagles driving with
1:16 left in the fourth quarter,
Boyne junior defensive back Jor-
dan Wilmot intercepted a
Krueger pass and the Ramblers
ran out the clock to preserve the
victory.
Leading the Ramblers offen-
sively, was Smith, as he carried 26
times for 135 yards and a touch-
down, Bradley Fouchia added 75
yards on 12 carries, and also
hauled in three passes for 53
yards. Senior Jamael Kelly also
rushed seven times, picking up 40
yards.
As a team, Boyne rushed for
283 yards.
Corey Redman finished 3-of-5
for 53 yards passing.
Kent City fell to 0-2, and was
led by Krueger's passing, as he
went 13-of-21 for 176 yards. Roden-
berg carries seven times for 57
yards and caught four passes for
69 yards.
The Rambler defense was led
by 14 tackles from senior Alan
Manross, while Conner Mills
added nine, Wilmot recorded five
tackles to go with his intercep-
tion, and Calo added two stops,
one for a safety.
Our young team responded
well, Hills said. We played well
and found a way to win.
Boyne will host Kalkaska on
September 7 at 7pm, to open up
Lake Michigan Conference play.
Kalkaska enters the contest with
a 2-0 record.

Ramblers sweep Lake Michi-
gan Conference foes in opener
Hicks, Nichols lead Boyne
By Chris Fiel
BOYNE CITY The Ramblers got a combined 43 kills
and eight blocks from junior Kylie Hicks, setter
Heather Nichols added 60 assists and five aces and
Erin Baker finished with 34 digs as Boyne City swept
Harbor Springs and Charlevoix in a Lake Michigan
Conference tri-meet volleyball on August 30 as part of
Boyne City's first-ever Rambler Day.
Boyne opened with a 25-23, 25-10,25-15 win over the
Rams, and then beat the Rayders 25-16, 25-17, 25-15.
Charlevoix topped Harbor 25-16, 25-14, 25-14 in the
other contest.
We got off to a slow start against Harbor, Rambler
coach Casie Parker said. But then we picked it up.
Against the Rams, Hicks finished with 19 kills and
four blocks, while Nichols added 33 assists and five
aces.
Also for Boyne, Rainy McCune finished 17 digs and
Erin Baker had 16, while McCune, Mary Myers and
Baker all served at 100 percent.
In the Rambler victory over the Rayders, Hicks fin-
ished with 24 kills and four blocks, Baker chipped in
with 18 digs, and Nichols added 27 setter assists. Both
Baker and Hicks served at 100 percent in the match.
This was a big match for us, Parker said, We have
not beaten Charlevoix in a few years, our girls were
pumped from the very first point of the game and kept
the momentum going almost the entire match. Kylie
played out of her mind today, it was tough to stop her.
We also had good and smart game play from Mary
Myers.
In the two Rayder contests, Karley Pearsall com-
bined to finish with 16 kills, 14 digs, six aces and five
blocks, while Madeline Boss added 14 kills and 10 digs.
Also for Charlevoix, Gloria Greene and Cassidy Pee-
bles added 19 and 14 assists, respectively; Jennaca
Holecheck and Anna Way added 13 digs each and Pee-
bles nine.
I am confident that the girls are a fighting team,
they want to compete and have high expectations of
the team as a whole, Charlevoix coach Audra Randall
said. Our consistency and positive game energy will
influence the girls being able to be successful on the
court and win games.

The all-new 2013 Malibu is
Chevrolets first global mid-
size sedan designed and engi-
neered to provide customers
from Shanghai to New York
and Sydney to Sao Paulo with
expressive design, advanced
technologies, ride perform-
ance and fuel-efficient power-
trains. It will eventually be
sold in nearly 100 countries on
six continents. In North Amer-
ica, the Malibu comes in LS,
LT and LTZ trim levels, along
with the Malibu Eco, which
uses fuel-saving eAssist
technology to enable EPA-esti-
mated fuel economy of 25 city
/ 37 highway, for the best fuel
economy of any non-hybrid
midsize sedan.
The new Malibu Eco is also
the first 2013 midsize car to
earn double honors for safety,
including a 5-Star Overall Ve-
hicle Score from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Ad-
ministration and a 2012 Top
Safety Pick by the Insurance
Institute of Highway Safety.
The Malibu Eco is a smart
choice for customers who
want a midsize car with excel-
lent fuel economy, but without
the higher price of some full
hybrid sedans. Malibu Ecos
eAssist system uses power
stored in an air-cooled,
lithium-ion battery to provide
needed electrical boost in vari-
ous driving scenarios, opti-
mizing engine and
transmission operation. An
advanced 115V lithium-ion
battery and 15-kW motor-gen-
erator unit help increase fuel
economy.
The exterior design of the
all-new Malibu carries DNA
from its sister vehicles, the Ca-
maro and Corvette, to bring a
sporty sensibility to the fam-
ily sedan segment. A wider
stance, broad shoulders and
an integrated rear spoiler
bring a new athleticism to
Malibu and give it a more ag-
gressive appearance. Malibu
also has electronically con-
trolled and integrated active
aero shutters to improve aero-
dynamics and enhance fuel
economy without sacrificing
the exterior design. They auto-
matically close airflow
through the lower grille open-
ing when air intake is least
needed, improving aerody-
namic performance and en-
hancing fuel efficiency. The
shutters are standard on Eco
and LS models, as well as the
3LT trim.
The new Malibu interior
was designed to bring an ele-
ment of sophistication to
everyday driving, featuring an
all-new, dual-cockpit design
that creates an inviting,
roomy and comfortable envi-
ronment. The increased width
of the new Malibu means a
more spacious cabin. Com-
pared to the previous model, it
has nearly four cubic feet (113
L) of additional interior vol-
ume, along with more shoul-
der and hip room.
For customers who enjoy
style and performance,
Chevrolet will offer its first-
ever Turbo on a Malibu with
an all-new Ecotec 2.0L turbo
engine rated at 259 horse-
power (193 kW) and 260 lb.-ft.
of torque (353 Nm) between
1,700 and 5,200 rpm. It is the
most powerful midsize sedan
from a domestic automaker,
and more powerful than Mal-
ibus previous V-6 engines. It
will be available later this fall
on LT and LTZ models.
The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu
delivers precise ride and han-
dling. It has been engineered
to be best-in-class and on par
with more expensive sports
sedans. Benefiting from con-
tinuous refinement of an
award-winning global archi-
tecture, engineers have tested,
tuned and calibrated the Mal-
ibu on rural roads, highways,
freeways and GM validation
facilities around the world.

Question & Answers About
Selling Real Estate
interior Specifcations
Number of bedrooms.
Pros: Common minimum re-
quested configurations are 3 bed-
rooms. Newer parents prefer
bedrooms located on one level.
Cons: 2 bedrooms appeal prima-
rily to first-time home buyers,
singles or seniors. However, dont
discount a two bedroom if an
extra den will satisfy your space
requirements.
Number of bathrooms.
Pros: More than one bath is pre-
ferred by most people. One bath
homes are often less expensive.
Cons: Dont pass up a one bath
home is there is room to add a
second bath. Sometimes it costs
less to put in an extra bath than it
does to buy a two-bath home.
square footage.
Pros: larger spaces offer more
room and cost less per square foot
than smaller spaces.
Cons: Dont be misled as lay-out
is more important than actual
square footage. Sometimes well
designed smaller spaces appear
larger.
boNus rooms.
Pros: Extra space for media
rooms, art studios, childrens

Sitting across from the 27- year-old soldier at the
Charlevoix library on a sum- mer day, observing his quick smile and steady calmness, it is surprising to nd out that he was nearly killed in
Afghanistan when the truck in which he was riding hit an Im- provised Explosive Device and blew up.
Platoon Sgt. Troy Drebenst- edt said he was thrown into the side of the vehicle, hitting his head and suering other in- juries. e next thing he knew he was on his feet heading down the road, intent on nd- ing whomever planted the IED. I was extremely angry, Troy said. A medic who had noticed signs of a concussion came to get him and his superior ocer ordered him back to the truck. e other four men riding with him also sustained injuries, but no one was killed. e explo- sive device was made with the intention to kill everyone in a large radius anywhere near it. He is blessed, he says, and he credits his character to his Christian faith and his up- bringing. His anger dissi- pated and he separates the Afghan people from the ter- rorists.
Being angry with a whole
race is buying into their big- otry, he said.
Troys job in Afghanistan was one of the most danger- ous. He was part of the Com- bat Engineering Unit, known as SAPPERS. He performed route clearance, that is, his job was to nd IEDs planted by the terrorists and clear the area of them for safer travel by the military.
Its one of the toughest jobs, but the number one threat to our troops are the IEDs, Troy said.
Troy served in
Afghanistan for 10 months and prior to that he served in Iraq for 14 months. He is now home in Marquette, un- dergoing treatment for his injuries and attending

When grabbing the leash to take Fido for a walk in the city of East Jordan, dog walkers are advised to grab a disposable bag, as well.
An ordinance was intro- duced at the city commis- sion meeting on Aug. 3, to amend Section 6-36 of the Code of Ordinances. Sec- tion 6-36 addresses re-
moval of dog feces if a dog happens to decide a neigh- bors lawn is the perfect
place to nd relief. But the new ordinance adds the
language that states:
Anyone walking their dog on property other than
their own shall be required to have a disposable bag .
Also at the meeting, the city administrator updated the commission on the
construction of the Emer- gency Services Facility. e main part of the building and the EMS wing were
under a roof, allowing the electrical and plumbing
contractors to begin their portion of the work. ere is still some ooring to be poured in the Fire Wing, the concrete walls are in
place and the roof tresses on this portion of the
building will be up soon. e completion target date is early fall.
Mary Faculak, president of the East Jordan Cham- ber of Commerce, gave a presentation to commis- sioners that informed
them of what the Chamber does for the city, and up- dated them on events the Chamber has sponsored. She said she is excited
about the Main Street Pro- gram.
