Careers and Employability Events 2012/13

TIMES HAVE

CHANGED

Gone are the days of the stuffy careers service where the few-and- far-between students sit in silence reading booklets on how to write a CV. Gone are the days of careers advisers asking what do you want to be when you grow up?. The Service comprises a vibrant team with a wealth of commercial experience they know what employers are looking for and how to improve the employability of students to increase your chances of landing a great job after graduating. Base camp for the Service is Room 4, Town House on the Penrhyn Road campus, with employability co-ordinators sitting out in the faculties they work with. We aim to ensure you have all of the tools youll need to succeed.

The service is already reaching lots of students, but we are always dying to meet more (so please feel free to pop your head in or come to an event). The mantra of the team is mass and meaningful with over 22,000 students at the University, working on a constant one to one basis would be very difficult. Of course we can offer tailored individual advice to students, but we want to expose you to real-life, useful situations and of course cover everything necessary to prepare you for the world of work! There is an employability co-ordinator based within each faculty who is dedicated to providing support for you. Each employability co-ordinator offers drop-in sessions, skills sessions (including CVs, applications and interviews) and they work with employers from relevant sectors, who offer opportunities for recruitment and help to shape what we teach you.

EVENTS

We run many events throughout the year these vary from employer-led events to training sessions and mock assessments. Each event is aimed at helping students to understand a particular sector or area and the huge number of opportunities, OR to train students in a particular skill. Have a look at the rest of this booklet to find out what we are running this year for each faculty. And we promise everything is interactive, so no lectures. The SPlTLIGHT lN: series are events which really hone in on a particular subject area. The events give you a chance to hear from employers and past students about the roles they have gone into and the types of companies who look for your subjects. You will also get an opportunity to network with employers and be speed interviewed.

RESOURCES

There are currently generic employability books available in the LRCs, however if you want something a little more focused, then come over to our careers library its filled with lots of industry related resources and books. Weve also got a computer area, for you to browse for jobs, sort your CV out and practise psychometric testing. Come over to see us in Room 4, Town House on the Penrhyn Road campus.

BOOKING AND VENUES

All of the events in this publication will take place in the 2012/13 academic year. Information on dates, times and locations will be posted on the Service website no later than two weeks before the event is due to take place. Please note, you will be required to book your place online for most of these events. To book your place for an event or for more information, please visit: www.kingston.ac.uk/careers/events Other events, including employer-led workshops, employers on campus and skills workshops will also be running. Please ensure you check the website, relevant facebook page or speak to your employability co-ordinator to see when these are running.

RECRUITMENT

Moving away from the old-style careers service and into a new age means that we are now helping employers to recruit for internships, placements and graduate roles; this means that once youve got your CV up to scratch, it will be added to our database and put forward for any relevant vacancies we receive. Make sure you keep in touch with your employability co-ordinator and keep checking your Kingston emails and the faculty facebook page for updates.
