Thanks! Thank you for believing in this organization and for accepting the DOURO BIKE RACE (DBR) challenge. It is an organization of Mountain Bikers for Mountain Bikers that share with you the passion for cycling. We work in order to make your experience in the DBR positively memorable. 3.2.
Security
Although there are many staff members along the route, warning about the roads passages, dangerous points, passage control, etc., it would be logistically impossible to cover the entire route. You are about to begin a MTB race with all the risks that involves. The mountains morphology is what distinguishes the DBR, making the tracks of each of them, a challenge and an adventure for the athletes and their bikes. In order all goes as better as possible we ask all participants to comply with the following: It is mandatory to have a mobile phone on during the stage. Be sure, with the due time, that you will have enough battery charge until the end of the stage (in accordance with your possible cycling). You must ALWAYS comply with the traffic rules along the competition. In Portugal, the driving is done for the right hand of the road. If you meet an athlete in trouble, please stop and help him/her. The time of the stage will be afterwards recalculated deducting the time you have been stopped. It is mandatory to comply with the information and recommendations of the medical team. In the DBR VILLAGE, you will found a first aid post of the RED CROSS (CRUZ VERMELHA) - AMARANTE. This will be entirely at your disposal. The contacts that must be used in an emergency case are the above mentioned (point 1.2); the number 112 must be the last option. Within the villages there are people, agricultural vehicles, animals, etc. that can run slowly. Please respect and be patient enough to face these situations. You must complete and sign the statement of responsibility in the race office when you get the athlete's kit.
Nexplore Rua do Outeiro 28, 4600-267 Amarante, Portugal Email: info@dourobikerace.com Tel. 00 351 917 400 997 The athletes must be present in the general presentation of DBR for each stage. During these presentations, will be provided essential information in order you can finish the stage with security. Please respect to be respected, never forget this along the event.
3.3.
Animals
Along the route, you may meet two kinds of animals. Wild: Foxes Boars Deer Wolves
Usually these animals avoid the human contact, that is, they escape when we come near them. In general, there is no danger, but we request you not to go close since they can attack. Domestic, that can be found in the mountain: Cows Goats Sheep
These animals coexist peacefully with the humans; indeed, they are accustomed to that coexistence. In spite their large size; they are docile animals, which do not disturb who rides a bicycle.
Nexplore Rua do Outeiro 28, 4600-267 Amarante, Portugal Email: info@dourobikerace.com Tel. 00 351 917 400 997 In the case you find any of these animals in the track, slow down your speed and go on quietly since they will not react. As per our experience, as MTBikers, never happened an attack in this area.
3.4.
Markings
The entire route will be marked with the red COCA-COLA band. There will be also signposts in the places where the organization considers they are needed. If you do not find a marking in any place (junction, intersection, etc.), we request you to please stop quickly a few seconds and make sure about the way you will choose. Our concern is about to make the markings in order you do not have any doubts about which track to choose.
3.5.
GPS Tracks
During the days before the event, these will be available for you to load them in your GPS. While this is not needed, it is an extra aid for the athletes that do not want to follow the bands. The tracks will be available in two formats: Google Earth (.kml \ .kmz) and in .gpx. The organization will not be responsible for the loading of the tracks in the participants GPS.
3.6.
Waste
The route along the 3 mountains will go through tracks with a great environmental richness. The tracks must be preserved and cannot be affected by our passage. There will be a big concern of the organization about this matter and that must be shared by the participants. It will not be tolerated any athlete to leave the food packs (gels, bars, etc.) or other waste (inner tubes, CO2 bottles, etc.) in the tracks. If the organization or other participants detect irregularities, the athlete will be punished with the competition elimination. The staff will have the special attention to request the athletes not to leave the waste they bring in the supplies areas.

It will be a journey in time from the beginning of the Humanity, through the Stone Age, the Middle Ages, and the Industrial Revolution until today. This happens because the tracks are close to traces of these eras. It is a 4 days competition - 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th September. DAY 1 URBAN PROLOGUE

7. FEED ZONES
Depending on the stage, we have planned the Feed Zones that allow the athletes in general to go from a feed zone to another one in a "comfortable way". The weather conditions (heat) and the physical training of each one will have a relevant role in this point. We suggest each participant to carry water and food enough to finish the stage. You must also bring some money to buy food\drinks in coffee shops and mini markets along the route if needed.
7.1.
How to arrive
We have tried to place always the Feed Zones in villages to make easiest the movement until the place of the support teams. The GPS coordinates provided are in geographical format (Latitude\Longitude). It is the format used in Google Earth. We advise to do the conversion into the decimal system, if your GPS does not support the geographical format and if you want to go to these points. On arrival to Amarante, there will be also a small feed zone of solids and liquids. We recommend a previous study of the access to the feed zone areas. These are distant villages, some of them very far from Amarante.
7.2.
Water
Products
Water in large quantities. We recommend refilling your containers and hydration backpacks whenever possible. The water in the supplies is NOT to cool the body.
Energetic Drink Energetic drink provided by the recognized Swiss brand Sponser. This drink with a right balance of electrolytes together with other minerals is easy to digest by the stomach and will provide you with the minerals you need to face the tracks. Coca-Cola Needs no introduction, it will present in the supplies and will delight everyone.

This selection will change every day and from feed zone: Mixed natural fruits and salty for those who like something with salt; Biscuits and sweets to balance the sugar levels.
All these food must be consumed moderately, thinking not only in the good functioning of your body, but also in the athletes that will arrive later on.
Support to the athletes Several staff members will be present along the route taking care of your security; A team of DBR mechanics will be at nearly half the route if you need mechanical support for your bicycles; Members of the medical team will be in strategic places.

8. ADVICES
DBR is a MTB competition/race that goes through 3 mountains, most of them isolated from the civilization. Tracks are demanding for men and machines, reason for some special recommendations.
8.1.
Bicycle
The ground of the DBR route is demanding for the bicycles so we recommend you to bring a full suspension bicycle with a 100mm stroke minimum. It must have light gearing to face the steep climb throughout the route. We advise you to do a detailed maintenance in order nothing fails during the competition. To have especial attention to: Frame, Transmission, Wheels, Brakes and Suspensions.
8.2.
Tires
The tires can compromise your participation in DBR, so we point out this component of your bicycle. These must be robust and with the size 2.0 minimum in order to allow facing tracks with many stones. In spite of our concerns about the tracks cleaning, you will find along the tracks dry vegetation (brambles, furzes, etc.) that increase the possibility of holes if you do not use proper wheels to withstand this "treatment". Do not choose wheels converted to tubeless! If your wheels are tubeless, use tubeless wheels with the related sealant liquid inside. If the wheels are not tubeless, use inner tubes with sealant liquid\gel! Take care about the wheels pressure.
8.3.
Equipment
In the DBR VILLAGE, there will be the DBR mechanical service, which has enough material if needed. Additionally, we suggest you to bring:
Cycle Computer\GPS Dismount Pump Hydration knapsack Gloves Quick links Sun protection Glasses Brake linings

Inner tubes Multi-tools Chain oil Zip-ties\cramps Fitting pedals
There are two specialized shops in Amarante. If we do not have the needed product and depending on the specificity of the equipment we will try a solution in the town.
8.4.
Clothes
September is the end of Summer, the days are mild, but the evenings and nights are cooler. The temperature variation during the day is already considerable, so we recommend: Casual outfit - Mid season for the beginning and end of the day. To wear in the bicycle - It depends on the weather during the event, but we recommend including sleeves and raincoat.
8.5.
Other recommendations
It is a 4 days competition/race with many hours pedaling, with wonderful landscapes, so do not forget to bring: o Camera o Enough cycling clothes o Chamois/ Bepanthene/ Halibut o Bars and gels as you wish o Money to use during the stage Those who want to leave the bike in the BIKE PARK may also leave the cycling shoes in there. Every athletes kit will have identifying stickers with the race number and that may be used to identify the shoes. We suggest you bring the shoes and a bag to place them.
