2012

Dear Friends, I was asked this week, am I a creative person and I quickly responded with the affirmative. For what comes to my mind when I think of being creative is turning my hand to any form of arts and crafts, the ability to make something. When I was informed that my creative flare was required for this front cover of the newsletter this is definitely not what I see as 'being creative'. I don't see my skills in the same light; give me something to make and I can accomplish it at the drop of a hat. Ask me to write, I struggle. For those 15 years as a Corps Officer this was the struggle I faced each week putting words on paper to convey a message of hope, encouragement, direction. 'What did God want these people in this Corps to hear? For me it is far more challenging to come up with a fresh idea, original thought, to pen words that encourage and to evoke a response. I often read other peoples sermons to give me ideas, other peoples devotional messages. Just last week I read these words from an online devotional site and while I can't recall what the scripture reference was about, I had a conversation with God about my contact with people at the up and coming Waverley Car Boot Sale. "He wants us to put our excuses on the shelf and then get ourselves out of the way to fully and faithfully obey Him and His word". 'OK Lord I hear you, help me to step out of my comfort zone and have those meaningful conversations.' From that same devotional message I copied these words down "It is often our pride and our desire for accomplishment that leads us to hide behind half-truths and excuses." While reflecting on my role as Trainer, thinking about the opportunities I have to travel, all the comments people make regarding my training skills - I used these words to ask the Spirit of God to keep me humble and to examine my true motive. So, has it been easy to put these words down, did they come together easily? No! But I am grateful to God that he gave me a starting point, these two quotes from a daily devotional last week. Just as I reflected on them and allowed God to speak to me I invite you to reflect upon them and be open to God's leading.
"He wants us to put our excuses on the shelf and then get ourselves out of the way to fully and faithfully obey Him and His word". "It is often our pride and our desire for accomplishment that leads us to hide behind halftruths and excuses."

Bless You. Christine Pickens

Lord God, grant that after years of climbing I may not find the mist in my soul has dulled the vision of thy glory. Keep me from the habit of looking for faults, and missing the virtues in others. Forbid that I should be so occupied in taking measure of other lives that I neglect to measure my own. Amen.

DONCASTER CORPS - All Together Celebration Lunch

Friends of Doncaster Salvos, were invited to our first all together lunch & celebration. A great day with around 70 people joining us - celebrating dads with our mainly music families, one year of Familyzone, and loads of other positive things. Paper plane making resulted in a keen competition. On each fold of the plane was something positive to be grateful to our dad, grandad, brother, favourite uncle, positive male role model for teaching us. A day to celebrate!

BOX HILL CHINESE CORPS FATHERS DAY CELEBRATION

About 110 people, young & old, came together to worship and celebrate Fathers Day. It was great to see some unfamiliar faces, the male spouses and busy fathers who dont normally come to church, but happily accepted the churchs invitation for the meeting. It was a great joy to see 13 young children taking part in singing a song which was very much enjoyed and appreciated by everyone present (fathers of the children in particular). Following the meeting, there was a time of fellowship for everyone, especially newcomers, while enjoying a delicious hot meal together.

Hope for Life Suicide Prevention and Bereavement Support

Thursday 27th & Friday 28th September

Suicide is a real issue facing our nation, and ordinary, everyday people need
to learn the skills and knowledge required to reduce the statistics of suicide. The Living Hope Suicide Bereavement Training Program will give everyday people, skills and confidence to provide support to people bereaved by suicide.

Workshop will be held at The Salvation Army, Dandenong Contact Karen Mitchelhill karen.mitchelhill@aus.salvationarmy.org / phone 8872 6400 As part the awareness week Corps Officers across the Territory will receive information to prompt all Salvationists to develop the skills and confidence to engage with people who may be contemplating suicide, as well as any friends and family who have been bereaved by suicide. You may be aware that The Salvation Army runs a national program called 'Hope for Life' that is funded by the Department for Health and Aging. Hope for Life offers two training programs QPR an online suicide prevention training program and Living Hope, a face to face suicide bereavement training program. The QPR and Living Hope training courses are complementary programs that provide training on how to deal with people contemplating suicide and those who are experiencing suicide bereavement. Information about these free training programs is available on our website http://www.suicideprevention.salvos.org.au/ During the designated week there is an opportunity to raise the profile of the issues of suicide. Hope for Life presents an important ministry for The Salvation Army and as such two designated Sundays are included for corps to encourage people to learn to support people practically and emotionally. THQ have prepared a range of resources to help your Corps and/or Social Centre ministry to support the Salvation Army Suicide Prevention Bereavement Support week:

Designated Sundays: September 9th or September 16th

We would like to encourage all Corps and Social Centres to spend time on one of the designated Sundays, 9th or 16th September 2012, reflecting on the pain experienced by those at risk of suicide as well as the devastating grief and trauma that the bereaved families experience following the loss of a loved one to suicide.
