SEMESTER: FALL YEAR: 2010

COURSE CODE: CE 354 CREDIT HOURS: 01 COURSE TITLE: HIGHWAY MATERIALS AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERING LAB. PREREQUISIT COURSE: CE353 COURSE DESCRIPTION Test on subgrade, subbase and base materials: aggregate impact test, tests on aggregate shape; roadway capacity studies. Tests on bituminous materials: specific gravity test, softening point and flash and fire point test, Marshal Method of mix design, CBR test. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1.To determine Aggregate Impact Value and Aggregate Crushing Value. 2.To determine Ten Percent Fines Value and Flakiness Index of Coarse aggregates. 3.To determine the Elongation Index and Angularity Number of aggregates. 4.To determine Specific Gravity of semi-solid bituminous materials. 5.To determine Penetration, Softening Point, Flash and Fire Points of bituminous materials. 6.To perform Marshal Method of Mix Design. 7.To determine CBR (California Bearing Ratio) of Soil. LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Students will be able to perform different tests such as AIV, ACV and Flakiness Index on aggregate and evaluate the test results. 2.Students will be able to understand various properties if bitumen like Specific Gravity, Softening point etc. and how these properties affect the Mix Design. 3.Student will also be able to analyze the roadway capacity. STUDENT EVALUATION The course grade will be determined from a weighted average of the quizzes, assignments, mid-term exams and the final. The weights are as follows: Attendance Assignment Report Viva Midterm Exam Final Exam 10% and 30% 10% 25% 25% to assess on learning outcome 1, 2 & 3. to assess on learning outcome 1, 2 & 3. to assess on learning outcome 1, 2 & 3. to assess on learning outcome 1. to assess on learning outcome 2 & 3.
