SAR captures Global mobility views from afar strains climate

Lucas Quintero Staff Writer
Dr. Margret Cheney of Colorado State University presented on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, which is used heavily in the astronomy field, and uses antennas and pulsing radio waves to capture images of distant objects that a digital camera is unable to capture. To display some of the uses for SAR, Cheney showed several images ranging from copper mines in Chile, to oil spills in the ocean, to topographical images in California. She related the process to seismic imaging, a model often used in the field of geophysics. Cheney explained that data can be collected from antennae attached to aircraft to present a detailed image. The variance of ratio between the length of the physical antenna and the wavelength of the propagated wave determine the information to be collected. Cheney focused on a small antenna compared to wavelength which had a more broad beam to collect data. This small ratio of antenna to wavelength is called synthetic aperture. After the brief history and explanation of SAR, Cheney delved into the mathematical ideas behind the technology. We should be using Maxwells Equations, she said, because those govern the propagation of electromagnetic waves. But, it is common to use, instead, a scalar wave equation. By manipulations to the wave equations and the field equations, Cheney arrived at an integral equation for which the scattered field was dependent on the reflectivity function. At this stage, Cheney said that the next problem would be to solve for the reflectivity function. Thus far, the model for the data is a Fourier Integral Operator, Cheney said as she related the subject back to some of the topics in Mines undergraudate courses. Through more manipulations and approximations, Cheney was able to arrive at an inverse function which solves for the reflectivity function. This solution loosely approximates the SAR echo waves. However, Cheney admitted that tit was an approximation, but joked that she never said that it is necessarily a good approximation. Cheneys lecture material and the progress made in the SAR technology could greatly improve the detail and accuracy of current SAR imaging. Cheney explained that further progress to improve upon this process would allow for multiple scattering wave propagations through random media, like trees. Cheney also said that she would like to allow for wide angle SAR and 3-Dimensional imaging as to allow for a better visual.

In a service based economy, such as the United States, transportation is the most energy consuming sector. Transportation links energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last century, transportation has increased creating a host of problems, such as the increased use of petroleum. Such rises in energy use make transportation a significant contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gasses and energy use. Andreas Schfer from Stanford university analyzed transportation in the seminar on Global mobility, energy use, and climate constraints, and used passenger kilometers travelled (PKT) as a unit of analysis due to its direct relationship to greenhouse gas emissions. PKT has increased over the past 100 years but the average daily travel time has remained relatively constant because the affordability of transportation has increased. As GDP per capita increases, PKT increases because people use faster modes of transportation allowing them to travel further while the travel time budget remains stable. Along with an increase in PKT, transportation has seen a rise in the average energy use per passenger, another factor in greenhouse gas

emissions. An increase in energy use is in part due to structural change in travel because of more powerful vehicles and more frequent air services. Smaller households are contributing to a rise in energy use per passenger because of the need and opportunity for sharing a vehicle has declined. An increase in energy use per PKT results in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. In the past, profit driven sectors were sometimes successful in lowering energy intensity. Freight railroads, airlines, and trucks have to work towards becoming energy efficient as oil prices rise to maintain their profits. So, opportunities for reducing energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions abound. Some of the constraints of reducing gas emissions include economic efficiency, time to impact, and consumer acceptance. According to Schfer, the most cost effective way [to reduce greenhouse gas emissions] is imposing a CO2 tax on the entire economy. Schfer proposes that it is possible to reduce the energy per PKT by about 30-50% by 2025. This could be managed while maintaining performance using technology currently being developed. But, in order to effectively lower greenhouse gas emissions, there is a need for a behavior change, people would need to start travelling less.

Hinxton, United Kingdom - According to a new study by a group of bioinformaticians, the human genome is more than just genes. Bioinformaticians study DNA and how the DNA stores information for the creation of cells. This particular group took apart the genome, and discovered that the four letter building blocks (A,T,C,G) of DNA actually only compose up to about 2% of the genome. They determined that the building-block letters were partly controlled by the rest of the genome, leading them to believe that the genome also switches the building-block molecules on and off, determining what type of cell the DNA will create.

Racine, Wisconsin - Beachgoers in the Great Lakes states may be in for some welcome news. It has long been known that seagull droppings are full of dangerous bacteria, and until recently keeping beaches clean of the waste was a time consuming process. Dogs may be the answer. A recent study by environmental microbiologists of a beach on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin found that training border collies to chase seagulls away significantly reduced the concentrations of dangerous disease bacteria in the sand.

La Palma, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain - Last week a group of physicists from Austria, Canada, and Germany set a new record for the longest teleportation distance ever achieved. The team successfully teleported quantum information a distance of 89 miles, beating the previous record of 60 miles. The process involved entangling a set of two photons. Then one of the photons is transported over a long distance. Any measurement or change in the transported photon was reflected in the photon that remained behind, 89 miles away. Quantum entanglement means that the two particles are connected on a quantum level, and when one is disturbed in some way the other is disturbed along with it.

Chitwan, Nepal - Tigers need their space, and many people are concerned that they are losing that space to urban expansion. As a result, bengal tigers in Nepal have been the subject of an ongoing field study in Chitwan National Park, a 1000 square kilometer wildlife reserve that lies on the southern border of the Asian country. The study determined that the tigers and the humans in the area have found a way to coexist, by time-sharing the land. By setting up camera traps in the reserve, the tigers were observed being more active at night than tigers in other parts of the world. The scientists involved in the study have speculated that the tigers have adapted, and simply wait until after dark when the humans are out of the woods to do their hunting and breeding.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed a congressional order declaring the Haqqani network a terrorist organization. The Pakistani-based organization is responsible for many violent attacks on American troops in Afghanistan. It is unclear at this point how the Pakistani government will respond to this move by the United States. The State Department believes this will cut off some of the funding to the organization from countries such as Saudi Arabia. China suffered a series of earthquakes last week, resulting in the deaths of at least 64 people in the Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. More than 6,600 homes were destroyed in the earthquake, with 120,000 more seriously damaged. The China Earthquake Networks Center says that the largest of the quakes registered at a magnitude of 5.7. The French government has been sending aid money to Syrians in rebel-held areas in an effort to help them restore running water and other necessary services. Diplomats have said that France is not supplying money for weapons for the rebel armies, but rather assisting the rebel councils that are attempting to unify the opponents to the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Barack Obama last week, calling him a very honest man and simultaneously discrediting Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Putin seems hopeful that he and Obama can reach a compromise on the proposed European missile defense system if Obama is re-elected in November. The deep drought is not only harming crops and causing fires, but is also contributing to increased bear activity across the United States. Reports of bears breaking into candy stores, raiding kitchens when windows were left open, and increased campsite robberies abound. The drought has reduced much of the bears natural food source, leaving them starved and searching for food anywhere they can find it. One black bear tried to clean out a hotel bar in Telluride, CO. A suicide bomber blew himself up in the center of Kabul, Afghanistan only a few hundred yards from the NATO headquarters, the presidential palace, and the U.S. embassy. Official reports indicated the bombing killed six and wounded four more, all Afghan civilians and some children. Witnesses indicated, though, that the death toll might have been as much as double that number. No foreigners were harmed, nor were any NATO or government buildings harmed. The Taliban, who claimed responsibility for the attack, stated the target was a CIA center. The NATO-led coalition neither confirmed nor denied this statement. Taliban reports indicated the bomber was 28 years old, but witnesses alleged that he was between 12 and 15 years old.

New residence life program helps students find their niche within the Mines community
Carmella Caltagirone Lucas Quintero Staff Writers
Every student that has lived in one of the residence halls on campus would describe it as being an educational experience. Residence life began a new program this year that hopes to put students with similar interests together to create a non-academic learning environment. According to the residence life website, this theme housing option [allows] students with common interests and pursuits to live together and support each other through planned activities and informal interactions. Students living in themed communities are connected to campus from the start. The Resident Assistant for each of these communities works with the hall director and residence life coordinator to obtain a faculty friend and partner with on and off-campus organizations. These communities have opportunities with local businesses and non-profits in the Golden and Denver area. The options for theme housing are: Adventures in Leadership, Service and Social Justice, Visual and Performing Arts, and Women in Engineering. Brian Zook is the resident assistant for the Adventures in Leadership community. When describing his floor, Zook said, Everyone can connect and relate to each other, but at the same time they are all different in their experiences and what they bring to the floor. Zook described how each resident has different technical knowledge of outdoor recreation activities. Prior to the start of school, the Adventures in Leadership community teamed up with the ORC on the Wilderness Instruction Leadership Development Program (WILD). The WILD program provides a day of fun and team-building exercises. Residents in this community get a Gear Pass from the ORC to assist in renting gear for trips during the year. Aaron Gunzner is the resident assistant of the Service and Social Justice community, in which residents of different backgrounds try to find a common ground in giving back to the community. When asked about his position on the floor, Gunzner said, I love community service, anyway, shape, or form community service pops up. Gunzner hopes that his excitement will get his residents motivated to volunteer. Gunzner hopes to provide several on-campus opportunities as well as off campus. Thus far, Gunzner has been talking with the Denver Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and Foothills Animal Shelter to schedule times in which he and his residents can volunteer. Gunzners focus for the year is to involve as many residents as possible. Since the opening of Maple Hall

Near-surface seismic is more than a problem of scale

Josh Kleitsch Staff Writer
Seismic imaging studies of near-surface geology are difficult to perform, due to the inherent problems associated with current technology. Rick Miller of the University of Kansas visited the Colorado School of Mines last week to present the latest research on taking ground data using near-surface seismic readings. Seismic geophysical imaging is used to determine the ground structure of native soil without removing it. The field was initially developed for the petroleum industry, and today much of the work still revolves around that field of engineering. Seismic imaging allows geophysicists to identify the rock structure in any area underground, and in the petroleum industry this is beneficial for determining both the location and type of oil and gas reservoirs present. By detonating a small explosive charge near the surface and measuring the vibration response, the technicians can determine the structure of any subsurface rock formations. But closer to the surface, seismic technology poses several problems to engineers and technicians. Miller pointed out that the issues associated with near-surface seismic imaging includes excess noise generation, clipping of the signal from large reflections, and other anomalies that make reading and interpreting the images rather difficult. In an attempt to improve the process, explosions with smaller wavelengths and higher frequencies are being implemented. When the waves are sent into the ground, their reflections are analysed to produce an image of the underlying ground. As a result, the shorter wavelengths produce a higher resolution, enabling technicians to identify the small gravel, sand, and rock nodules buried anywhere from 3-20 meters under the surface. Miller pointed out that longer wavelengths do not register that these nodules exist, and that smaller wavelets could essentially nullify the use of standard deep seismic technologies. However, this newer process does still have its obstacles. One of the difficulties associated with using shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies is that they produce more noise in the image. This requires more careful interpretation, and in some cases advanced computer modeling to eliminate the noise. As part of the lecture series, Miller will be visiting dozens of schools in over 20 countries over the next three months, bringing many research groups up-to-date on the latest technology available for seismic imaging. Miller is part of the research faculty at the University of Kansas, and an active member of the SEG.

of the increase. Unexpectedly, the commuter meal plan purchases increased 500%, when they were anticipated to decrease. Additionally, the housing capacity is at 105%. Brown also announced that this Career Day is going to be the second largest in history with 258 companies present and 70 companies on the wait-list. This year, the school has begun to transition into a new plusminus grading system. Freshmen will be required to use this system, but instructors of sophomore level classes and up will have the choice to use the new system, or stay with the traditional grading system. The school is also looking into increasing retention. Josh Ho, at-large-institution representative, announced that Mines Internet Radio is looking into additional funding to hire non-work study students for the organization. High Grade, the campus literary journal, is also looking to make the publication the size of a yearbook this year. Noah Langford of the Board of Student Organizations announced that their office hours are posted online and that they are looking into giving non-club organizations an OrgSync page. Junior class senators announced their office hours as Tuesdays at 5 pm, and the Senior class announced office hours for Thursdays at 2 pm. Lessons to live by from Ford Engineers

Arnaud Filliat Asst. Copy Editor
Engineers need a wide-ranging set of skills to be successful. Not only do engineers need to excel in math and science, but they also need to be team players and have great writing skills. Last week the Oredigger interviewed two Ford engineers working on the new Ford Fusion that embody these skills and more. Jennifer Shaw and Rebecca Seiler work for Ford in the driverassist and active safety sector. Their work helps drivers understand their surroundings to make safe choices, to avoid collisions, and even stop the car from a collision by an automatic braking system. Both women grew up in Metro Detroit and surprisingly never knew they would end up in the auto industry. Seiler and Shaws families did not have anyone working in the auto industry even though they are from Detroit. Shaw said, There are some people in the metro Detroit area where everybody in their family has worked for one of the auto companies and that wasnt my experience at all. Shaws Mother was a high school math teacher and her father was an engineer. She got her inspiration to become an engineer at a camp where she worked on an engineering team (similar CSMs EPICS courses). After getting to college and working internships at various companies she found her place in electrical engineering. Regarding her job at Ford, Shaw said, what I was doing at those other companies wasnt really the type of work I was interested in and the opportunities at Ford seemed more like the sort of work that I wanted to be doing on the type of product that I wanted. Seiler said, I have a very similar background to Jennifer, no one in my family works for the automotive industry at all. As a young child Seiler loved English and took writing and art classes such as poetry. But her inspiration for engineering came from a space camp in Alabama. At the time she thought she would work on the space program, but in college Seiler said, the space program wasnt growing at that time it was kind of dwindling. All the interviews I had where more for communications satellite and commercial flights. She wanted to have a large impact on something that would advance human society and found that Ford fit the bill perfectly. Both Shaw and Seiler attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Shaw received her bachelors and masters in electrical engineering and Sieler received both her bachelors and masters in mechanical engineering. They met while working for Ford. With the career fair coming up, Shaw and Seiler both highly recommended pursuing internships. Seiler said, Internships are definitely an extremely good thing. It is very different working at a corporation versus working on your schoolwork. When I was taking my classes at the University of Michigan I had a different idea of what engineering would be like out in a corporation, and then when I had that inside experience I was like Oh this is how you take all your

The Dark Knight fails to raise audience reviews

Lucy Orsi Business Manager
Compared to its predecessor, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises is a longer and less appealing film. Among comic book movies it rates fairly high, but ever since The Dark Knight and the equally engaging box office hit Inception, audiences have come to expect more from director Christopher Nolan. Sadly, his third and final installment in the Batman franchise is lackluster on almost every level, from visual effects and cinematography all the way down to basic plot points. The high point of the movie is, without a doubt, the beginning. The movie opens eight years after the death of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) at an event hosted in his honor. The setting quickly changes to what seems like a prison break, but is really an airplane hijacking. It is here that the movies antagonist is first introduced. He goes simply by the name of Bane (Tom Hardy) and has a unique mask that doubles as a kind of voice changer. At first, this effect is fascinatingly haunting. His voice is amplified in a way that makes it seem like it is surrounding the viewer. This would have been an amazing addition, if it did not simultaneously make him impossible to understand and painful to listen to throughout the movies extreme length. From here the movie goes downhill. The visuals are mundane and the script is laughable. There is no accurate way to summarize this movie in a short review because it is an unnecessarily complicated movie. Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale) has been in hiding for the past eight years, but when the city is taken over by Bane he is called to action. Bane claims to want to hand power over to the people, so he locks down all of Gotham with the threat of a nuclear bomb and declares war on the rich and powerful. There are two women

bag overnight to marinate. Marinate with any thin non-alcohol based sauce along with a mix of black pepper and soy sauce. It is easy to marinate the vegetables and chicken overnight, store the rice, and fry everything in the morning. When ready to begin frying, heat the pan on a stove-top at high heat. Lower to medium heat and place chicken in pan. Do not add oil. Fry chicken until golden brown and set aside. Remove frying pan from stove-top and add oil to coat pan. Replace frying pan and add vegetables. Add soy sauce liberally while moving the vegetables constantly with a spatula. When the onions are golden brown, add two eggs and other scrambled egg accoutrements. Suggestions include salt and pepper to taste or water or milk for foamier texture. While the eggs are liquid, add rice and stir. Add more soy sauce and continue stirring. Once the eggs are fully cooked and the rice begins to brown, the dish is ready. Remove from the active burner and serve.

Gossamer masks depression with beat

Lucy Orsi Business Manager
There are few albums that are as good and catchy as Passion Pits Gossamer. Like Passion Pits debut, listeners might tap their feet less enthusiastically once they stop and listen to the lyrics. This was a cute trick on their first album, mainly because the depressing themes in the songs were generally veiled behind clever lyrics that required some work to decipher. On the new album, though, front man Michael Angelakos hits the listener over the head with his depression in every song. If the lyrics were well written and thought provoking, it would be nice to stop dancing and listen to them. They are not, so the best advice to give listeners of this album is to stop thinking about it and keep on dancing. It is not fair to tell Angelakos that he cannot make happy music with depressing lyrics. It is fair to say that if these lyrics were isolated from his songs, they would belong in some high school kids notebook immediately after his girlfriend dumped him. One of the more overt examples of this is in the song Love is Greed where Angelakos asks If we really love ourselves / how do you love somebody else? To make this juvenile lyric worse is the fact that it is enunciated in the song by an even higher than normal falsetto from Angelakos. He is acting as though he has just pointed out some earth shattering idea to listeners. This falls in line with the teenager metaphor, since most people generally mature past being so self-centered around the same time they stop slamming doors in their parents faces. It is one of the worst lyrical songs on the album, but evidence of lazy song writing is everywhere. Even on this summers hit single, Take a Walk, Angelakos makes a confusing, if not disturbing, lyrical jump. In the middle of describing financial hardship in America, he sings Honey its your son a few lines before declaring And tonight I swear Ill come home / And well make love like were young. It is likely Angelakos got tired of trying to fit in two separate verses rather than considering the implications of an Oedipus complex. The one exception to all of this is the song Ill Be Alright. Here, Angelakos successfully captures the disappointments that young adults often find in revisiting, and hence reanalyzing, old memories. Furthermore, this is one of the few songs where the beat of the song does not distract from the lyrics. When he asks Can you remember ever having any fun? /Cause when its all said and done / I always believed we were / But now Im not so sure he seems to sympathize with listeners of his own music who might have accepted his songs at face value, without regard to their depressing undertones. It is one of his only songs that seem both honest and compelling. In the middle of Love Is Greed, Angelakos summarizes the lyrical journey of his own album when he claims All this talk of love just turns to noise. Indeed, this album is filled with songs that take listeners into the somewhat twisted mind of Angelakoss, but at the end of this journey, most listeners will be left questioning whether or not it was

all worth it. At a certain point, all of Angelakoss lyrics simply become depressing noise.

Davis album is legendary

Ian Mertz Copy Editor
With a legendary influence on jazz, rock, and classical music for over 50 years, and often referred to as the greatest selling jazz record of all time, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is an album that can be appreciated by seasoned jazz listeners as well as those that are new to the genre. Davis and his sextet recorded the album in New York City during March and April of 1959 and released it a few months later in August. What has made Kind of Blue so unique and historically significant is its use of modality implementing a series of scales as opposed to rapid chord changes. Davis had experimented with modal jazz during 1958, but Kind of Blue was the first album he prepared based entirely on modality. The goal was to allow the musicians more freedom to create, and they do that from the very first track, So What. So What begins with a quiet pairing between bassist Paul Chambers and pianist Bill Evans. The intro moves slowly initially before its pace increases. Often, Chambers plays dissonant notes which create a sense of unease. Right after he hits an especially dissonant interval, Chambers launches into the pieces signature bass line, one of the most magical moments during the song. Equally memorable, few listeners will be able forget the first time Evans enters in with So Whats two note melody along with drummer Jimmy Cobbs ever-so-light touch on the ride cymbal. Compared to most jazz tunes where the horns play the melody and the bass supports them, So What reverses the conventional method by featuring the bass with the melody and the horns playing a supporting role. Before and during the solos, try to listen for the chord changes, as this song is only made up of two chords. The modal form of the song allows the soloists, Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, and Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone, to really stretch out and explore their scales. All of the solos are great to listen to, but the opening of Coltranes solo is especially beautiful and reveals his talented playing style. There is no saxophonist who compares to Coltrane. There is also no better song to set the style for an album like Kind of Blue than So What. The second song on the album, Freddie Freeloader, has a more traditional format when it comes to the arranging. The horns play a very simple head, then the solos commence. Playing first is Wynton Kelly, who replaces Evans on piano for this tune. Kelly demonstrates great skill with the blues during his solo, combining single piano notes with chords all while keeping the listener interested. Davis plays the next solo and similar to his playing on the first track, takes a relaxed and methodical approach to his playing; there are no rapid notes to be found here. Conversely, Coltranes solo is much more lively with big jumps around his tenor. His aggressive start might be off-putting to some listeners. Adderley plays next with an alto solo full of many runs, but firmly rooted in the blues. The solo section concludes with a bass solo by Chambers, which demonstrates his skill on the big double bass. Overall, Freddie Freeloader is a simple, well-executed blues tune. Blue in Green is the third tune on Kind of Blue and it is a tender ballad beginning with a nostalgic piano and bass opening. Davis enters with his signature Harmon-muted trumpet as Cobb enters with brushes on the drums. Davis entry is a bit harsh and at times his playing seems a bit morose, but it is Evans piano playing that makes this piece a great ballad. Evans solo sounds generally heartfelt as does the tenor saxophone solo played by Coltrane. Just like on So What, Coltranes entry is impeccable and he shows that he is able to back off from rapid runs to give this ballad the kind of attention it needs. This is another magical moment on the album. Evans concluding piano solo provides the perfect ending as the dynamics and speed rise and fall displaying true emotion and a bit of angst and frustration. Listen for Chambers bowed bass solo during the ending and note how the low notes support the piano. Following Blue in Green is All Blues, which is played in 6/8 time and opens with more brush drumming and an underlying piano trill line. Davis plays the melody as the other horns gently play a supporting line. He again uses the Harmon mute, which combined with the time signature, gives many of the passages in the song a snake charmer feel. Despite being over 11 minutes long and having a repetitive bass line, the creativity of the solos and rhythm section keep the piece from becoming dead. The album concludes with the final song, Flamenco Sketches. In contrast to the other songs on the album, this one has no written melody; it is entirely made up of improvisation from the musicians. The tempo of this song is very moderate and the backing is most often very simple and light. There is a brief intro by the rhythm section before Davis begins playing with the Harmon mute. During the middle of every solo section there is a change where the tune takes on a bullfighter feel based on the chords. Coltrane uses the same approach as he uses on Blue in Green and his solo is both emotional and heartfelt. He sets up the bullfighter chord transition expertly and even throws in a few rapid runs from the bottom of the instrument to the top. The other solos also complement the ballad tempo. Upon listening to Kind of Blue, it is clear that the album still has something to offer today. The ability for the musicians to express themselves free from rapid chord changes allowed them to play meaningful and creative solos. The simple song structures are not hard to listen to, and they are varied enough that the album does not have just one mood. Both new and experienced listeners can sit down and enjoy Kind of Blue. It is sure to be available on almost every music service, so play it in the car, or on a portable player and hear why it is one of the most influential jazz albums of all time.

Passion Pits newest album exposes lead singer Angelakos depressing lyrics to a happy and peppy beat.

This week in Colorado history

Deborah Good Managing Editor
The Grand Army of the Republic conducted a parade that loosened the hearts of the Queen City and the Centennial State until the mountains re-echoed the songs of battle and the cheers of the multitude, reported The Colorado Transcript this week in 1905. The paper continued, arguing that the parade would be written of in years to come as the one that had no flaw. The event honored Union Army veterans by giving them the full freedom of the streets, and as they paraded along the participants, were showered with flowers from bystanders. Both parade participants and spectators conducted themselves in a manner befitting a patriotic event; there were no accidents although the city was packed with spectators and decorations. An hour into the parade, the official festivities began as the chief of police stepped from Broadway into the front of the reviewing stand. A flag was placed over the stand in memory of an unspecified dead commander, probably Lincoln. The marchers, led by Colonel George E. Randolph then rode past the governor of Colorado, the mayor of Denver, and various other government officials. The setup included a 6000 person grand stand. Occupants of the grandstand took up the magnificent chorus of approval that sounded far up from Larimer Street. Music played was appropriate to the Civil War connections, as it included John Browns Body and other war songs. Those veterans who were not physically able to march in the parade were conducted along the route via stage coach. After that, each states delegation marched through the route. Bringing up

the rear of the column were four Mexican War veterans. It certainly bears mentioning that the Mexican War had been over for more than 55 years by the time of this event, and the fact that any of the soldiers from it were healthy enough to travel to Denver and participate in a parade is very impressive. The Colorado Transcript reported the event drew 12,500 veterans, 125,000 spectators, 50 bands, and 80 drum corps for a seven mile parade route. The time for parade to pass a given point was three hours and five minutes. The largest GAR chapter

GCB entices beer crowd

Esther Lowe Staff Writer
Even with Coors down the street, Golden City Brewery (GCB), the second largest brewery in Golden, is a local favorite. The tasting room is located in a carriage house built in 1890 and is just three blocks south of Washington Avenue on 12th street in the historic downtown district. According to Andrew Taylor, a founding investor and 1974 Mines alum, the company has grown to full capacity since it opened in 1993, in large part due to the establishment of the companys beer garden. Located in Charlie and Janine Sturdavants once grassy backyard, the beer garden was constructed to meet the demand for more seating at the brewery after heavy customer use wore the grass away. According to a regular customer, Geddy, another Mines alum, GCB is the hangout spot for locals to catch up and relax after work. Geddy, an India Pale Ale (IPA) guy, credits his love of IPAs to the unique and fruity taste of the craft IPA beer, Evolution, produced at GCB. According to the bartender, Derek Gilmore, the brewerys two most popular brews are the Evolution IPA and the Legendary Red. Derek credits this to the beers percentage of alcohol by volume 7.3% ABV and 5.2% ABV respectively which he claims is a price-wise consideration for Mines and other students. In addition to the attractive % ABV, Derek explains that the flavor of the IPAs comes from fruitier hopps such as Cascade and Simcoe hops, which attracts the beer connoisseurs. Another delectable and rare commodity brewed at GCB is their Centurian Barley Wine. This balanced and deliciously sweet beer boasts 11.9% ABV and is typically brewed for eight to 12 months, according to Taylor. Other seasonal beers currently on tap include the Golden Summer Ale, a favorite of Taylors, and the Irish Stout. Taylor also mentioned that regulars keep an eye out for the companys seasonal chili and pumpkin beers. Golden City Brewerys unique history and flavor continue to influence the clientele. The carriage house buzzed with a disproportionate number of local geologists and engineers who loved small scale beer production in addition to home brewing juxtaposed with tourists and out of town guests, who were also present in large numbers. Gilmore started home brewing when he turned 21 after his parents gave him a homebrew kit. He had been brewing for 10 months when he applied for a job at GCB. Sarah Henderson, the brewmasters assistant, is another Mines alumna who studied in an accelerated brewing program after graduating from Mines. She worked for Avery Brewery in Boulder for a year of her accelerated program. In addition, the founding brew-master at GCB,

hailed from Kansas and had 3200 marchers; the smallest hailed from Florida and had only five marchers. This week in 1905, The Colorado Transcript encouraged Coloradoans to be proud of their states mineral production. The mint director reported that Colorado produced more gold than any other state, with $24,395,800 worth of the precious metal. California came in second with $19,109,600 worth of gold. The state also produced 14,331,600 ounces fine of silver, but Montanas production exceed Colorados by 266,250 ounces.

professional geologist Sturdavant, became the first brew-master at Tommyknockers, a microbrewery in Idaho Springs founded in 1994. Although GCB is a geologist and engineer infiltrated brewery, the brewery is not exclusive in its stock. The company produces 1000 barrels each year and occasionally sells out. In these dire situations the company purchases other local beers to fill the tasting room until fresh GCB batches are sufficiently blended. When asked why the company has not expanded production, Taylor said that Golden City Brewery maintains a special group of steadfast customers who enjoy the brewery as an important social center specifically where it is located in the historic district and respect the brewery for its small size. Geddy agreed saying it is considered part of the Golden charm. Geddy advised avid bikers to take note GCB is the final stop on the Pint to Pint ride, which starts at the Ironworks Brewpub in Lakewood. After two visits, tastes of the Centurian Barley Wine, Evolution IPA, a pint of the Legendary Red, and a pint of Mad Molly Brown (the first beer purchased by the author), the authors favorite remained Mad Molly Brown. For its flavors, quality, atmosphere, and accessibility, the brewery receives a five-star rating. Potential customers should note that Golden City Brewery only accepts cash.

Citizens revolt in Gotham City Imposters

Emily McNair Staff Writer
Sorry Bruce Wayne, but your time is up. Armed with cardboard cowls, roller skates, and shotguns, the citizens of Gotham are prepared to defend themselves against the onslaught of the villainous Jokerz. A multiplayer-only first person shooter, Gotham City Imposters drops a character into the middle of a huge free-for-all. The four modes of this game are certainly not new. Impostors features standard team deathmatch, capture-the-flag (psych warfare), and resource domination (fumigation) modes that have been around since the dawn of first person shooters. The one mode unique to this game bounty hunter gives points based on the number of tokens each team picks up. When a player dies, he drops a token. If the opposing team picks it up, then they get a point. Although these modes are not necessarily ground-breaking, they create a fun atmosphere for a study break. The game does not have the highest quality graphics, but neither are its graphics poorly executed. Characters appear cartoony, but do battle on maps that are fairly realistic. Often, the games sound effects simply do not fit the different situations the game presents, however. They make the game more lighthearted, which distinguishes it from other shooters such as Call of Duty. Character customization is one of the games strong points. The many costume choices allow for unique combinations. The better looking items are available as downloadable content, but they only serve cosmetic purposes. No one is at a disadvantage without the most current items. Sadly, there is not a way to change the color of costume pieces, which would have been a nice addition. Like many other games, Gotham City Impostors has level progression. As a player earns more experience, he or she levels up and gains access to better weaponry. However, the weapon unlock system does not limit lower leveled players to underpowered weapons. Rather, it allows each player to unlock what he believes would work best for him. A similar system exists for body types and boosters. This system creates an alternative to the standard higher level-higher power progression of many other games. It allows new players a chance to really get into the game without getting completely destroyed. Overall, Gotham City Impostors is a good game for a little entertainment. While

certainly not groundbreaking in any respect, it is different enough from other shooters that it will offer any player a unique gaming experience. This game is ridiculous and over-thetop in a fun way, and simple enough so that anyone can quickly get into the action.

Alara Chapter 13
Nicole Johnson Staff Writer
A steady downpour drenched Telloc, Marna and the ten men huddled behind them. Telloc told himself it was rain, even though rain had scarcely touched their worlds surface in twenty years. Real rain wouldnt have smelled like sulfur or stung like a low dose scrambler beam. Telloc held up a hand, commanding a halt. He could feel the mens relief at being able to stop their trek through the muck even if the pungent scent of decay steaming up from the ground made their heads spin. Telloc pulled the hood of his jacket tight over his head, wiping away the liquid obscuring his watch. Eleven thirty was flashing a bright, neon red. He closed the latch over the time, checking the two scramblers attached to each hip and the three daggers strapped to his thighs. Beside him Marna was giving last minute instructions to their team. Telloc pulled out a small metal sphere and twisted the top open, releasing a wavering hologram of the enemy ships schematics. As his eyes adjusted to the pale blue light of the hologram, Telloc settled his back against the trench wall and tapped the lowest level visible on the schematic, buried nearly fifty feet underground. Tucked away in the center of a twisted maze of frozen host bodies from dozens of species was where Alara was being kept according to their latest intel. His hands curled into fists. He should never have gone along with this idiotic plan, but with Alara on the pulse of the ships primary functions this idiotic plan just might work. He flipped open the latch on his watch, eleven thirty-eight. Telloc threw one last look at the enemys ship. Over the years the ship had slowly sunk in the damp, bloodsoaked soil. One side had sunk faster than the other, resulting in a slight lean. Torn flags of the aliens conquered worlds flapped lazily in the small breeze. He forced his gaze away and stood to face the group behind him. Alright, listen up. In two minutes were going to receive the signal. He gestured for the group to join him at the edge of the trench. He indicated the fence a few hundred yards away. All the guards are going to be called to the main command ship. Take out as many as you can without being noticed, the less we face inside the better. Once we overload the generator, you all have ten minutes to get out. Understood? Ten faces, fearful but resolute, nodded in unison. Marna dared to smile. Telloc smiled too, puling out a scrambler and closing his eyes. All units, he whispered. We are a go. A moment of pause and he opened his eyes. All units are in position. Its time. The group crawled from the trench, crouching as they moved quick and silent towards the guard towers. A half dozen or so alien guards were in the immediate area. Telloc and the others calibrated the scrambler for the extended range and waited. Suddenly alarms began blaring and the lights on the guard stations flickered out. Even though it was almost mid-day, the pollution floating in the air covered most of the sun, making it look like just after dusk. The group of guards died with the looks of confusion still on their faces. The steady hum from the guard fence silenced. Telloc pointed to three of the men and started forward. The three followed him to the base of the fence and went to work cutting out a section. Once Telloc was sure the area was secure, he waved the others through. They ran for the shelter of one of the hangars from the ship. Using a card key taken from one of the guards, they pushed through the hangar. Occasionally groups of guards would run past but they would shrink into the shadows and let them pass by. Telloc led the way through the maze he had memorized from the schematics. Just when he thought they might have gotten lucky, a scream erupted from behind them. He turned just in time to see two of his men fall into a pool of their own blood. Two alien creatures stood behind them, wrenching their blades from the fallen. Without a word, they rushed the alien guards. Luckily their cries of pain were masked by the blaring alarms. After the two lay dead, they dragged the bodies aside and continued through the neverending corridors. Eventually they came around a corner to find the door they were looking for. Telloc, breathless from the running, held his scrambler tight in one hand and in the other held a keycard taken from the parasite they had interrogated almost a year ago. He held his breath as the red light switched to green and the door hissed as it slid open. Tellocs smile dropped when he realized the room was filled with fifty aliens. They all looked up from their stations and laughed as they drew their weapons. The resulting bloodbath left five more of their team dead. Just as he finished the last alien, Marna called out. Telloc turned, following Marnas gaze to a coffin-sized chamber. He ran over the bodies to stand beside Marna and looked down into the fog-covered glass. He inserted the key card and entered the aliens pass code. After a moment of nothing, the machines connected via wires into the box began beeping. The glass lid slid open, allowing the cold vapor to spill out over the edges of the box. As the vapor cleared, Telloc was able to get a clear view of Alara. Her face was smooth and relaxed, like she was asleep. He turned to the adjoining monitor and entered in a few commands. A loud humming erupted from the machines followed by a few sparks. The box began to heat up, condensing the vapor. Alaras skin filled with color and the ice melted into water. He placed a hand to her face and wiped away the water pooling on her upper lip. Suddenly her eyes flew open and she bolted upright, screaming. Alara, Alara, wake up. Its me. Its me, Telloc. He held her arms as she thrashed. Marna, secure the door. Yes, sir. As the tremors passed, Alaras breathing began to steady. Woke me....too fast....I told you, Telloc... She turned her head from side to side, gripping Tellocs hand as tight as she could. Telloc, her gaze looked relieved and happy when her eyes met his. The moment went as fast as it came as her eyes searched for someone else. Chloe, she asked. Tellocs grip loosened as he looked back at Marna and the remaining members of his team. She was taken last night by Garren we believe. We had to move ahead in the schedule. Taken? Alaras eyes darkened with anger. She sat up and with Tellocs help removed the wires connecting her to the computers. She sighed. Where is she now? Telloc wanted to look away again. Hed forgotten how human she could sometimes be even if she was an AI. We dont know. Telloc... But we will find her. The plan will continue, assuming youve done your part? Alara nodded. The routine is in place. All we need to do is get to the generator room. Well need Chloes help... She began coughing as her lungs adjusted to the warm air of the ship. Telloc, bring me to that control board. Telloc scooped her in his arms and brought her to the other side of the secondary control room. Alara was busy running through the security feed when Marna came up behind them. You guys might want to hear this. She held up a bloody radio. Between blasts of static Telloc thought he could hear a voice. Can you clean up the signal? Yes, sir. Marna fiddled with the settings until the voice was clear enough for the three to recognize its owner. Alara frowned at hearing her masters voice. Whats going on down there? Are we ready to move out? Telloc and Marna nodded. Telloc pulled up a different set of schematics. Twenty sections of red dots were positioned all over the ship. All units are in position and awaiting orders. Then give them. She reached out for the radio. Uncertain as she was, Marna handed over the radio. Alara took in a deep breath. Hello, Masters. Were coming for her and then for you. Youre crazy if you think Im going to help you. The Mayor began to laugh. Dont you see what Im offering to you, child? What Ive always offered my children? The Mayors smile was soft like her fathers but there was a look in his eyes that twisted Chloes stomach. Its been so long since Ive had a human host. Ive almost forgotten the rush of inhabiting a different species. With your body and my mind, we shall become the purest specimen. His eyes remained on hers but somehow looked straight through to her soul. Her skin went cold as ice. In darkness, destinies are realized. He placed a hand on her shoulder. I suppose I should thank you. After you and your father escaped into the wilderness, more started asking questions. So many curious people, not enough lottery spots. Most disappeared after being drunk and wandering into the caves. Of course they all came to me and the experiments. When we launched fifty years later, the first stage of our evolution had begun. The first world was easy enough to conquer but rapid progress makes one hunger for more. The resistance here satisfies the craving. Your ship is dead. You cant leave this place. True but I can use the rift. Because youve traveled through it, you must be strong. With your body as the transmitter, I can spread the telepathic field we produce and claim the soul of every living being through space and time. My empire will never die. Suddenly every light flickered and blew out all at once. Emergency lights cast long eerie shadows through the laboratory room. The Mayor growled before grabbing the radio on a nearby table. Secondary Control, report. Static filled the silence. Report I said, he grumbled. Were ok here, sir. The generator? What about the generator? Fine sir. The shields are down but... Static flared over the voice but Chloe could still hear the poor things screams. Whats going on down there? After a moment, a new voice came over the radio. Hello, Masters. Were coming for her and then for you. Alara, she whispered. Hold on, Chloe. Were coming. The Mayor threw down the radio and crushed it under his heavy steel toed boots. He yelled for more guards before lying on the operating table and nodding towards the surgeon. Proceed and be quick about it. Chloe struggled but the surgeons grip on her was too tight. He forced her face towards his as he strapped a mask over her face. Within seconds her fingers and toes began tingling and by the time she had taken a breath, the room swirled into blackness. Through the haze of consciousness she last remembered the hum of a laser.

Lady Orediggers defeat Washburn 2-0 at home

Jared Riemer Staff Writer
After winning their last two games by a combined total of 16-0, the Mines Womens soccer team was looking for its third straight win Saturday against the Washburn Blues. Coupled with an overwhelming offensive attack, the Lady Orediggers turned in a strong defensive showing shutting out the Blues 3-0 and improving to 3-1-0 for the season. Mines opened the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute when Anna Evans converted on a long shot for her fifth goal of the season. Senior Megan Woodworth was credited with the assist for her pass from 45 feet out. Mines scored again in the 30th minute on an unassisted goal from Dani Hering that bounced off the crossbar and landed in the back of net, giving the Lady Orediggers a 2-0 lead. Mines controlled the ball for most of the game and had it not been for some quality play by Washburn goalie Tori Fuglister, the score would have been much higher. The Lady Orediggers outshot the Blues by a total of 31-0 and had a total of nine corner kicks. In the 89th minute, Hering added another goal for the Lady Orediggers after a pass from Jordan Partin found her foot, giving Hering her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. The Lady Orediggers dominated the game start to finish and overpowered their opponent to win their third straight. While in CSM territory, Washburn (0-40) was simply unable to handle the defensive pressure Mines unleashed in their third straight shut-out of the season. Minds atto the year Mines Looking forward

Arnaud Filliat Assistant Copy Editor
After just a few weeks of class, the rigors of being back in school begin to mount. Professors reveal new concepts and many of them teach more difficult subject matter. In celebration of how hard getting back into school can be, and how rewarding parts of the year can be, this week, Minds at Mines asked, For the upcoming school year, what do you dread most and what are you most excited about?

Q: Hey Tex, with many recruiters coming on campus next week, how do I succeed at Career Day? -T.W. A: Well, T.W., by succeed I assume you mean get a job or, at the very least, get an interview. Outside of all the formalities like a decent GPA, a work history, and examples of intellectual curiosity, recruiters are only looking for one thing swagger. If you were a recruiter, standing in a fluorescent-lit gymnasium for six hours and talking to dozens of engineers without a break, are you going to remember the braniac kid who incessantly talked about his pet robot? Or are you more likely to remember the guy who walked, talked, and epitomized John Wayne in every action. I rest my case. For those of you students less up to date with the current speech trends, swagger is essentially the way

I have a problem...

Dear Tex,

september 10, 2012

So Im graduating this semester and Im definitely excited about being done. I think what Im most afraid of is whats coming next. Its a mixture of both excitement and a little bit of fear. But Mines is a great school, so I know Ill be fine. Ana Ochoa

that one carries oneself. This includes a sure walk, a chin held high, and an invincible attitude. The twenty-first century philosopher and forty-third President of the United States, George W. Bush, understood the term when, during his presidential nomination acceptance speech, said, Some folks look at me and see a certain swagger, which in Texas is called walking. Political views aside, a president with swagger exudes a certain confidence, the same confidence that recruiters are looking for in job candidates. So, on career day this Tuesday, be sure to walk into the recreation center knowing that you own the place. Even when Snooki, without any redeemable skill sets or social graces, walks into a club, it is apparent that she is in her domain. Do likewise. Display confidence without being overtly arrogant, showing that you are sure of your-

self in every action that you take. Identify with the recruiter, look at him or her in the eye, and show the person that you are the best candidate for the job. If things go awry with a company, just pull a Jay-Z, brush that dirt off of your shoulder, and go on to the next one. If you have any questions youd like featured in The Oredigger, or require advice on any topic, be sure to e-mail jsparks@mines.edu and your inquiry will be answered swiftly and appropriately.

What I dread most would have to be the tests. Well obviously, they are a massive source of stress and quite frankly they offer no joy in my life. What Im most excited for would probably be coaching the climbing team. Im stoked the conferences coming up this semester and next semester. Andrew Lee

John Bristow Astrology Master of the Universe
As the sun rises through the house of infinite astrological meanings and Jupiter finds itself surreptitiously stranded in the middle of a traffic circle in South Golden, all sign holders will find themselves with a +5 modifier to daylight sight. You will all be able to see at least six statute miles, albeit, it may be limited due to bad karma. Due to a lack of reliable sources, dates have not been found for any of the symbols, please pick your poison. Aries: Both major political parties and a few minor players have discovered how to beam special campaign messages straight to your eyes. You may find that this could cause problems as you descend into madness. Pay attention Thursday as soft drink companies will discover this talent as well. Taurus: Why get up tomorrow morning? The simple answer is that a massive colony of termites that will utterly ravage your house as extra-solar planet Gilese-281e passes through the magical mystery constellation this week. It is the advice of this column that you just give up and run as no newspaper wants to write about death by termites. Gemini: Beware acts of leadership this week. Though there is potential for your Yellow Legal Pad Lovers club to take flight, it is just not worth starting up a campus-wide war between pad lovers and spiral bound fiends. Please take note that if you do in fact start such a club, the best way to attract sarcastic horoscope writers is scotch and caramel. Leo: kdjhfalkjhfdsuydfilasHELPkjdfsjhflahMEjsadhkfhsadkfjhTHEkdjfhaksjdhfkHOROSCOPESsdlkfjakshdfHAVEsdkjfhasjdfiuasHELDhdfaiuyfdMElkusd f i u a o i f d u p q e o i H O S TA G E s daifuosidufgPLEASEkdlfasfisdufSENDlksjdflasdfiuHELP Virgo: Today is a great day to trust your horoscope. Horoscopes are never wrong. Ever. If any sarcastic graduate student comes up to you and tells you otherwise, do not listen to him, he is crazy and he is just upset because his thesis isnt turning out the way he was hoping. This is basically because he doesnt do real astrology. Libra: Fact: Horoscopes have always been correct. Who was there to tuck you in as a child? Was it the president? No. Was it some sarcastic grad student? I would hope not. You know, it was probably a horoscope; horoscopes are cool like that. Did you know that horoscopes help secure thousands of jobs a year? They are good for you. Scorpio: ***Incoming transmission*** Attention all horoscope column readers. Do not trust the following two lines, the horoscope police took me captive, but I have escaped. Leo people, beware of feral cats, Virgos, be weary of flying while naked, Libras, now is not the time for you to pursue a career in interpretive tap dancing, and Scorpio, thanks for giving me this space. Sagittarius: Next week if the column starts with the phrase My Fellow Americans you can trust that I have regained full control of the column. Sagittarians, rise up, you will find that along with your increased daylight vision that you can soar a few centimeters higher than you could before. Try breaking a few pole vaulting records this week. Capricorn: Ignore that last signs prediction as the responsible author has been successfully locked away again. He escaped pretending to be an assistant for the local ice cream truck. Unfortunately for him, the truck does several rounds a day and what he thought was the local bus terminal was actually the horoscope prison. Capricorn, all will be grand for you, find love and such. Aquarius: There is no reason to be freaked out about the moon growing larger, all it wants to do is be your friend. When the tides become more extreme as our celestial neighbor comes closer for its galactic hug, dry areas across the world will finally get the moisture they need. Fear not the doom moon.

Rockies aim for unprecendented winning streak in Rocktober

Evan Ford Rockies Devotee
After a season of let downs, struggles and injuries, the Colorado Rockies are looking for the answer to what went wrong in 2012. Fans are looking for a scapegoat to take the blame for one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Although many believe firing General Manager Dan ODowd would solve the problem, researchers inside the clubhouse have found that the problem is far from managerial. The Rockies have indeed suffered from injuries on central players, such as all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. His groin injury appears to be due to strain and overuse, but evidence suggests foul play and sabotage. The suspect western Croatian extremists hired by the rival San Diego Padres organization. These individuals allegedly infiltrated the Rockies Clubhouse and slipped muscle degrading substances into the shortstops water supply, a probable and respectable theory. Another legitimate theory: the Rockies are just plain bad this year. As of September 6, the Rockies are a stellar 56-80, a mere 20.5 games behind the first place San Francisco Giants in the National League West. But the Rockies are not poised to take the division the Blake Street Bombers are setting their sights on a NL Wildcard berth. Think back to 2007. The Rockies capped off a sub-par season with a legendary run, winning 21 out of 22 games (including playoffs). Sadly, that streak ended with heartbreak, as the Rockies were swept in four games in the World Series against the Red Sox. But not this year. With 29 games left in the season, it is more than likely some Lo-Do Magic will come into play. A little winning streak of, say, 29 games or so, could give the Rockies the boost they need. If this happens, their record will be improved to 85-80. All of the misfortune of the 2012 Rockies season is bound to turn around at some point. And why not now? Rockies fans share this optimistic outlook. Many have been to a Rockies game lately. In spite of their continuous poor performance, home game attendance has remained impressively high. The Rookies, excuse me, Rockies, have been drawing, on average, 33,000 (which is more than 20,000 for those of you keeping score at home) fans per game. This is quite remarkable for a team that is 24 games under a .500 win loss ratio. It helps having a bunch of promising young talent like Josh Rutledge and Jordan Pacheco coming to play every game. But, knowing the Rockies, they will be traded in the offseason. If the Colorado Rockies somehow do not complete the simple 29 game winning streak, there is a last resort scrapping this season and looking forward to 2013. Thirteen is a lucky number, right?

Marquez Hall to be site Syrup Hall plans of Breaking Dawn: Part 2 in progress
Josh Kleitsch Disseminator of B.S.
Summit Entertainment announced last week that it would begin filming the fifth movie of the Twilight saga right here on the Colorado School of Mines campus. Summit, the production house responsible for the Twilight franchise, spent the last two years scouting various college campuses across the country to find the perfect one for the fifth installment of the wildly popular teen vampire drama films. The Twilight series has grown by leaps and bounds since diversifying its target audience to include college age girls at engineering schools. Their next move is to film the second part of Breaking Dawn on a college campus, in an attempt to further deepen that inner longing of college girls to swoon over the white-faced, sparkly vampire known as Edward. Cowlong Doon, the director of marketing for the film series, offered an explanation for why Summit chose the Colorado School of Mines campus, and specifically the brandnew Marquez Hall for the new film.
