KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North RICHARDSON LANDS SUBDIVISION

At the Ward Council meeting on Jan. 24th representatives from the Regional Group, who are co-ordinating the development of the subdivision north of the Richardson Side Road in the South March Highlands. The first phase of this subdivision is now underway. The zoning for it has been appealed by the South March Group. Come to find out what is happening, how the buffer to Kanata Estates is being created, and the timing of rock removal (including blasting), servicing and home construction. The meeting will also be an opportunity for an update on the lands north of the Beaver Pond.

WINTER WEST
The Kanata Chamber of Commerce is working with community groups to have Winter West held in our area. This will be a number of winter activities that various community groups hold each winter. The Chamber is assisting by finding sponsors and providing publicity. The website www.winterwest.ca will provide information on all events. Winter West will mainly be on the first weekend in February although some events may be held at other times. You will be able to enjoy winter without leaving your community. Im looking forward to attending as many events as possible.

GARBAGE COLLECTIONS REVIEW


The City of Ottawa is doing a consultation on pickup for garbage, recyclables and the green bin. Any changes will not occur until 2012 as that is when the pickup contracts will be renewed. Open Houses are being held across the City originally there wasnt one in Kanata but one is now being organized and the time and location will be on my website as soon as it is known. Sessions are also being held from 10 am to 2 pm at Carlingwood Shopping Centre on Jan. 22nd and Bayshore Shopping Centre on Jan. 29th. At any of the sessions you can drop off old single-use and rechargeable batteries as well as old cellular phones and batteries for proper disposal. COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MEETINGS


The Briarbrook and Morgans Grant Community Association is meeting on Jan. 19th at 7:30 pm in the Old Town Hall. There will be updates on dogs in parks designations, the Kanata North Recreation Centre, pathway connections to other communities and rink maintenance. Email margaret.sambol@rogers.com for more information. The Kanata Lakes Association is planning a meeting the same time and evening at SS $1 (which is off Goldridge). WASTE MANAGEMENT OPEN HOUSES


Waste Management has started the Environmental Assessment for a new landfill on Carp Road adjacent to the existing landfill. They will be holding Open Houses and Workshops on their plan commencing next week. The first set is from 4 to 8 pm at the Carp Agricultural Hall on Jan. 18th, Brookstreet Hotel on Jan. 19th and the Stittsville Legion on Jan. 20th. A new Carp Mountain will impact on all of us so ensure your views and questions are answered. Go to http://wcec.wm.com/ to view the terms of reference for the project.

ALZHEIMER MONTH
January is Alzheimer month. To learn more about this disease go to their website www.alzheimer-ottawa-rc.org. or attend a special seminar on Jan. 19th from 7:30 -9:30 where you will learn about early warning signs, research and other matters.
