To search for books related to the September 11, 2001 attack for my text set I began by searching Google for childrens book related to 9/11. Once I had a list of different types of books I searched through Joyner library catalog to see which ones they had available. One of the books I found that was no available at Joyner, The Little Chapel That Stood, has an online version on the authors website that you are able to click through and read and view each page. The different genres I was able to find were historical realistic fiction, juvenile nonfiction, digital text, and non-fiction graphic novel. The book I was assigned to read for my literature circle was 14 Cows for America. This book is about a man from Kenya who lived in New York during 9/11. He returns to his home for a visit and tells his people the horrifying story of 9/11. His people were heartbroken over the tragic event so in return they give America some of their most prized possession, cows. This was their way of showing their condolences for the loss America suffered. Each one of the books I chose to include in my text set are about the attack of 9/11 and the suffering that came from the attack. The stories all include the heroic ways people gave to help those who suffered from the attack. The books that I have chosen range in grade level and genres so that students in elementary school of all reading levels can enjoy them.

Brown, Don (2011). America Is Under Attack: September 11, 2001: The Day the Towers Fell. New York: Roaring Brook Press. Summary: This book is about the events that happened the morning of 9/11. The book is very detailed. It has exact times of the events that happened, how fast the planes were going, what floors they hit, and even talks about what the al-Qaeda used as threats to take control of the plane. It has a few quotes from some the firefighters that acted that morning after the attack. With the illustrations and details it gives the reader a mental image of what happened the morning of 9/11. Grade Level: 3-6

Jacobson, Sid. (2006). The 9/11 report: a graphic adaptation. New York: Hill and Wang. Summary: This is a graphic novel on the final report from the final commission based on the attack of 9/11. This is a lengthy comic that touches on the morning of 9/11 but is based on the after events of it. It breaks down what happened, why it happened, the signs that were missed, and Americas responses to the attack such as war. This would be for more advanced readers but is a great graphic that really breaks down the truths to 9/11. Grade level: 4-5

Curtiss, A.B. (2003). The Little Chapel That Stood. Escondido, CA. Old Castle Publishing. Summary: This is a story about a chapel built in 1766 that now stands across the street from the where the twin towers stood. The story is told from the chapels point of view of watching New York grow into the city it is today and what was seen and noticed during the attacks of 9/11. The chapel opened its door after the attack to the firefighters, doctors, and policeman who were working long hard hours to help. It focuses on the heroism of those who gave and risked their lives to help those in need. The story is written as a poem. Grade level: 2-3
