Why the 7302/7330 ISAM?

Why a multi-service IP DSLAM?

Alcatel-Lucent University Antwerp

> or a justification The usual marketing/business stuff > Its all about the introduction of new services, in general voice and video services, where the video services can consume/take a lot of bandwidth in the network of an operator. Lets call this > the need for speed of customers. > Operators translate this in a couple of requirements, namely the need for increased revenue the need for service bundling the need for high market penetration the need for new access technologies

3FL 00276_A AAAA WBZZA Ed 03

2008 Alcatel-Lucent., All rights reserved

Impact of the need for speed on access

1

Multi-service from a single access platform is key.

Triple Play : Data, voice and Video

Increased need for bandwidth results in

new BB access technologies (Multi-DSL, VDSL, FTTU) deployment of deep fiber & remote devices upgraded capacity in the DSLAM
2

Access network architecture evolves to IP multi-edge & Ethernet:

initiated by DSLAMs providing both ATM/GE interfaces DHCP is the end-game for VoIP and STBs, PPP remains for HSIA this requires a service enabled edge, ensuring security & guaranteed QOS

Access platform becomes an intelligent multi-service hub

which needs centralized subscriber & access management which is IP empowered (e.g. native multicast, IGMP proxy) which needs optical Ethernet termination

> So we started off saying that customers do have the need for speed, i.e. faster lines, bigger capacities on their lines. This impacts the operators a lot, and the slide above indicates four main areas operators focus on. > For the single topic mentioned here, some slides explain them on following pages. > Multi-DSL: ADSL and the new ADSL2 flavors: ADSL2, ADSL2+ & READSL2 > SHDSL: single pair high speed DSL > VDSL: Very High Speed DSL > FTTU: fiber to the User > STB: Set top Box, attached to your TV set

> The traditional DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM) (being an ATM DSLAM or an IP DSLAM) is built and tailored for supporting one single service: the high speed internet access service (HSIA), which is a best effort service. > Given the increased penetration of multiple services over the broadband infrastructure, these nodes are evolving towards multi-service access nodes, focusing on guaranteeing the delivery of multiple services towards all users, and this for business as well as residential subscribers. > The major challenge to be solved is the capability to deliver the complete service kiosk to every subscriber, with different customer profiles (for both business and residential subscribers), with different QoS and service level agreement (SLA) constraints.

> Each service demands its own specific network requirements. Consequently migrating to a range of new services beyond high-speed internet access requires that not only the access node, but also the transport, management and service architectures evolve accordingly. > The existing access network needs to evolve from the current best effort service to an architecture that supports multimedia services.

4- Authentication

5- IP intelligence

e.g. PPP, IP aware bridge, IP routing

> The access nodes in the central office (CO) are now intelligent multi-service hubs, providing Gigabit aggregation for subtended remote units or management system and access point to all devices. > Bringing the service delivery point closer to the subscriber is essential for the success of multiservices deployment, providing improved QoS, scalability and reliability. This enhanced architecture provides an increased level of service knowledge in the CO by distributing the intelligence from the central BRAS towards the access nodes. > The next generation multi-service access nodes need to ensure that the variety of service types are properly prioritized, processed and that services are classified onto dedicated virtual local area networks (VLANs) or permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) extending into the second mile of the access network. The increased need for bandwidth for video services has lead to strong innovations inside the access nodes. Dedicated video resources, native layer 2 multicast and IGMP proxy lead the way to multi-service. > In addition, advances such as network processors, non-blocking architectures, subscriber management relay or termination, increased Gigabit connectivity and advanced security features (tracking users to a port to prevent fraudulent activity and denial of service attacks) are critical features in the network evolution process.

> The 7302 ISAM is particularly interesting for those operators who are planning a fast evolution towards multiple services over the broadband infrastructure. These are typically service providers looking to implement a triple play package of internet, video and voice over copper as well as business internet and corporate access services for SMEs. > The Alcatel 7302 ISAM is tailored for Ethernet aggregation. Typically the ISAM does not offer any ATM network connectivity. There is however a solution to connect to an ATM network, but that is not covered in this presentation. > The 7302 ISAM is initially targeted for operators with Ethernet aggregation networks deploying new DSLAMs in the COs. This market is distinct from that of the Alcatel 7300 ASAM and the 7301 ASAM, which offer a migration path towards Ethernet aggregation with the existing Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet uplink products while keeping the legacy connectivity to the existing ATM network. As a final migration step, the 7300 and 7301 ASAM upgraded with Ethernet uplinks can be subtended to the 7302 ISAM to operate in a 100 percent Ethernet aggregation environment, with guaranteed services towards all the subscribers.

> Before describing the 7302 ISAM platform, let us first position it in the world of DSLAMs. > Traditionally, a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) had an ATM core aggregating traffic from all ATM based xDSL access lines. Given that most edge networks were - and mostly currently still are based on ATM switching and/or SDH transport, it is quite natural to keep ATM as underlying layer 2 technology and provide interworking to IP deeper in the network (e.g. at the BAS). > The need for a DSLAM with Ethernet and/or IP capabilities is widely recognized. The specific term IP DSLAM can however be interpreted in different ways, for in the most generic sense IP DSLAM means a DSLAM with IP/Eth functions that interfaces with an Ethernet aggregation network.

> On the slide you see 3 possible interpretations of an IP DSLAM, and at the same time this slide positions the 7300/7301 ASAM versus the 7302 ISAM. > Option A represents in fact an ATM DSLAM with ATM/Ethernet interworking function at the trunk interface. That means that the end-user traffic (e.g. IP/Eth or IP/PPP/Eth) remains encapsulated in ATM until the point where the traffic is aggregated and sent into the edge network i.e. the internal architecture of the DSLAM in this case is still based on ATM. > Option B shows a DSLAM where the ATM/Ethernet interworking function is no longer at the trunk interface, yet at the termination side of the xDSL lines. That means that the end-user traffic (e.g. IP/Eth or IP/PPP/Eth) is decapsulated from ATM at the point of entrance in the DSLAM and processed as Ethernet traffic inside the DSLAM i.e. the internal architecture of the DSLAM in this case is based on Ethernet. > Finally option C shows a DSLAM that is not only based on an Ethernet switching core, but is even capable of terminating Ethernet based access interfaces. These access interfaces can be Ethernet based xDSL (such as packet based VDSL) or direct Ethernet interfaces (e.g. optical links to connect end-users). The 7302 ISAM can currently terminate direct Ethernet user interfaces as well as packet based VDSL and SHDSL (EFM = Ethernet in the First Mile).

> At the user side, the ISAM terminates ADSL/ADSL2/Re-ADSL/ADSL2+, SHDSL & VDSL links. It is also possible to terminate a limited number of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet links (FE/GE). > At the network side, the ISAM terminates GE or FE links. In case of more than 1 FE or 1 GE, Ethernet link aggregation can be used. The Ethernet links can also be connected to 1 or more Ethernet switches. The Ethernet switches forward the frames over the Ethernet based aggregation access network until it reaches the IP Edge Router of the corresponding network service provider. At the IP Edge Router, the frame enters the IP backbone of the network service provider. The ISAM can also be connected directly to the IP Edge router, in which case the Ethernet aggregation network is reduced to 1 or more parallel Ethernet links. > At the user side it is also possible to connect subtending IP-DSLAMs. It is possible for example to connect ISAMs in cascading model. The last system can be any IPDSLAM, e.g. an ISAM/FTTN, or an Alcatel ASAM with an Ethernet uplink (FENT or GENT) or any other kind of DSLAM with Ethernet uplink.

> The cascaded topology allows installing shelves and racks in a chain. The so-called subtended system is connected to the main system through a subtending interface (such as Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet) and shares the network interface of the main system. Depending on the exact purpose (expanding to large DSLAMs in certain central offices and/or increasing coverage in the network by positioning DSLAMs at as many locations as possible), the subtended systems can be located near the main system (=co-location) or at a remote location. > There is no strict limitation on the number of subtended ISAMs. Each ISAM has its own free running clock. Of course, the available and necessary bandwidth has to be taken into account. > Note that also other types of DSLAMs can be cascaded of an ISAM via Fast or Gigabit Ethernet interfaces: 730x ASAM, 730x ASAM-c, 7324 RU, non Alcatel DSLAMs. > Sometimes, the cascaded topology is also referred to as the daisy-chained topology.

The mapping of functional blocks to hardware modules depends on the equipment practice chosen. > Data forwarding in the ISAM is accomplished by interworking functions (on LTs) and/or an aggregation function (on the NT): both of them include a forwarding engine. > The core of the ISAM is the 24 port Ethernet service hub (shub or aggregation switch), providing a 24 Gbps switching capacity. > The line termination module terminates subscriber interfaces and provides the interworking and aggregation function towards the service hub. > The LT-module actually consists out of 2 functional submodules. The transport function ant the IWF(Interworking function). > The transport function varies with the type of access technology used (ADSL, VDSL, SHDSL, Ethernet, ...). > For DSL interfaces, the transport function contains: the High-Pass Filter (HPF) , separating the DSL portion of the signal spectrum from the narrowband signal (POTS or ISDN) the DSL modem function, providing the physical layer termination of the DSL signal

> The line termination module (contd) Transport function On the slide you see that the LT module terminates VDSL or SHDSL (EFM) and below the line termination module terminates xDSL or SHDSL (ATM-based). Depending on the access technology terminated, you will have a different type of LT board. The IWF handles frame forwarding, including sophisticated filtering and traffic management (QoS), all at the line rate of the transport medium. Internally the ISAM is Ethernet based. As a result of this, the IWF will, in case of DSL interfaces with ATM transport mode, also remove ATM/AAL layer. Line termination modules ( located on LT-boards), are connected to the aggregation function via the ASAM-ports or expansion port the line card can be a separate box (REM) (which doesnt behave as a standalone node!). Links between aggregation function and LT-boards are called ASAM-links. Links between aggregation function and REM are called expansion-links. > The remaining ports on the service hub can be allocated to uplink interfaces (connecting to the upstream E-MAN), to subtending interfaces (connecting to downstream Ethernet DSLAMs) or to user Interfaces (connecting directly to 802.3 subscribers). IEEE 802.1d STP and IEEE 802.1w RSTP are supported on network ports only. IEEE 802.3ad Link aggregation is supported on network ports and subtending ports. > The max. number of LTs and the max. number of uplinks depends on the equipment practice. > The packet processing architecture of the ISAM family is future-safe and specifically designed for multimedia and business service delivery over IP/Ethernet aggregation networks. > The Control and Management function is required for maintenance and operations, remote inventory information, shelf management. As the name indicates, this function implements the management plane of the system and part of the control plane, in particular the part related to subscriber management which is typically not found in an Ethernet switch product. The Control function is distributed over multiple general-purpose processors, managing the system, service hub and LT modules in a hierarchical way. > The ACU (alarm Control unit) module provides collection & distribution of equipment & customer alarms. > The clock module generates the system clock. It consists of a local oscillator which can optionally be locked to an external reference clock (BITS). > The TAU (Test Access unit) function provides access to an external line test head (for Metallic Test Access) and provides control of the MTA relays on the splitter modules. Manages the switching of signals between the MTA ports (located on the PWIO-B) and subscriber lines (connected to appliques). > The Power function is the interface point to the external DC power supply systems and provides power monitoring, filtering, distribution and securing functionality. > The 802.3 Port function provides the physical layer interface for Ethernet ports. Electrical autosensing 10/100/1000 RJ45 ports and optical FE/GE ports on SFPs are supported. > Server modules can be plugged into LT slots. Instead of providing subscriber connectivity, they typically provide an auxiliary central processing function, e.g. the ISAM-V IVPS (ISAM voice Packet Server) module, which provides a centralized signalling interface to the call server or softswitch. Server modules are not discussed in this presentation, nor indicated on the drawing. They are discussed in separate dedicated courses. > SMAS module System MAC Address storage. The SMAS module is integrated on a remote inventory PROM that contains the MAC address of the ISAM (NT). Upon booting up of the ISAM, the MAC address is read by the active NT (or the standby NT in case of failure of the active NT). The 24 MAC-addresses for each port on the SHUB, are derived from the system MAC address that is stored on the SMAS PROM. By having this MAC address stored on a separate board, the same MAC address can be maintained when swapping between active and stand by NT, or when a NT board is to be replaced/upgraded. The SMAS module is considered an integral part of the shelf. Where the SMAS functionality is integrated depends on the equipment practice.

> The slide above shows the 7302 ISAMs XD system architecture. > The 7302 ISAM XD consists of a set of 16 subscriber line termination (LT) boards, 1 or 2 network termination (NT) boards, 1 network termination I/O board, 1 alarm control unit (ACU) board, all located in an eXtreme Density (XD) splitter-less shelf ALTS-T. > The NT board contains an integrated aggregation function with a total switching capacity of 24 Gbps which is commonly referred to as the service hub (SHUB). > Actually there are two ethernet switches on the NT having a capacity of 12 Gbps each, which means the total switching capacity is 24 Gbps, corresponding with 16 GE ASAM links + 8 Ethernet links. > Depending on the NT card type you will have 7 external Ethernet links + 1 control link or 8 external Ethernet links. In case of 8 external Ethernet links the connection of the SHUB with the control and management function is no longer done via ethernet. This way the ISAM has an additional network link (true e.g. for ECNT-C see later in this presentation) > Whether a clock function (BITS) interface is present on the NT or not will also depend on the variant of NT card. > The 7302 ISAM XD does not have a dedicated power unit (the interface point to the external DC power supply systems and provides power). On the shelf itself there are so called fast-on connectors for providing power supply coming from the top rack unit (TRU). The power signals BATA, BATB and BATRET are distributed via the backplane and feed the plug-in units and fan units installed. > You do not find the TAU module on this drawing, although ISAM XD equipment practice provides this functionality. An RJ45 for test access (connection to TAU) is present on the NTI/O ( see later), but the TAU module itself is on a TAUS-card which physically needs to be inserted in the splitter-shelf.

> For the data path, in the 7302 ISAM-XD , the main building blocks are the LT boards on which we can find the IWFs and the NT (see later) on which we can find the aggregation function. All the data that passes through the 7302 ISAM-XD will always pass through the NT. > The 7302 ISAM-XD is equipped with a large number of line termination boards (LT). Different LTs exist for DSL access. Most of the LTs also need a paired applique boards. These applique boards can reside in an equipment placed in the same rack or in another location (see further in this document). > In the 7302 ISAM-XD, each LT card is connected with the NT via the backpanel using a 1 GE electrical interface. This way the Alcatel 7302 ISAM-XD offers wire speed delivery of services towards each user through a non-blocking bandwidth of 1 Gigabit per slot.

It provides management interfaces (LAN, CRAFT, RCRAFT) to the outside world and control interfaces towards the line termination (LT) boards and the network termination I/O. > On the NT resides an interface and media conversion block which provides 3 or 4 (depending on NT card type) external Ethernet interfaces. > This eXtreme Density ETSI shelf is a splitterless shelf with front access and backpanel architecture: NT slots: NT-A and NT-B (for NT redundancy). NT I/O slot: to insert the NT I/O applique board. ACU slot: for the ACU card also used in ASAM. ACU performs alarm management of the shelf LT board area: 16 slot positions where LT cards are inserted (48 ports XDSL / 24 ports SHDSL / 24 ports VDSL. In the future also 48 port SHDSL and VDSL cards will be supported) POLT and IVPS cards can also be inserted in the LT area (ISAM-V) 1 SMAS slot: for the SMAS (System Mac Address Storage) card, contains a remote inventory PROM that contains the MAC address(es) of the system 1 fan unit with or without dust filter. The upper part of the shelf is referred to as the connector area (also see one of the following slides). > 16 LT boards in one sub-rack and only one sub-rack in one ISAM system means that the max number of xDSL lines that one ISAM system can support is 48*16=768 lines. > The ALTS-T has no splitter area. The splitter function can be done in the same rack or in another rack (external splitters).

> The Physical Location Identification Switches (PLID) identify the position of the subrack/shelf in the ASAM. Depending on the shelf type (LT or combo) you have 2 or 3 per rack! > The PLID jumpers are located on the ASAM back-plane behind the NT board (see slide). SR-ID0 SR-ID2: identifies the position of the subrack inside the rack. R-ID0 R-ID3: identifies the position of the rack within the DSLAM. R-TYP0 R-TYP3: identifies the type of DSLAM to the AWS.

> The ALTS-T subrack provides the PLID setting. This requires 21 PLID bits for extreme density equipment. > PLID setting is done on the backplane. Nine bits (SLOT-IDxx, BP-TYP) are fixed by the backplane lay-out, the other twelve (SR-IDxx, R-IDxx, R-TYPxx and ACU-EN) are altered at the installation with jumpers. These jumpers are placed on the backplane in two columns between the ACU and the NTA slots.

> ECNT-A NT board with integrated SHub. Provides three electrical FE, electrical GE or optical GE links on the front panel. > ECNT-C NT board with integrated SHub. Provides four GE links on the front panel: three GE optical + one 10/100/1000Mbps optical/electrical (selectable) > Besides providing network termination, the ECNT card performs Ethernet switching and control functions for the 7302 ISAM-XD and the 7330 ISAM FTTN-XD, as well as for any connected 7330 REM. It handles the xDSL, the shelf, and the switching data path. > The ECNT card handles high-bandwidth IP services for xDSL subscribers by providing a 24 Gigabit Ethernet switching fabric (service hub). In the downstream direction, high-bandwidth IP services enter the network termination side of the 7302 ISAM or 7330 ISAM FTTN over connectivity at the ECNT card or through the NT I/O (7302 ISAM) or GENC card (7330 FTTN). > The ECNT card switches the Ethernet IP traffic. The appropriate packets for each connected xDSL subscriber are then forwarded over the backplane to the LT. In the upstream direction, the ECNT card receives Ethernet packets from the LTs over the backplane. The ECNT card either switches the Ethernet packets to the high-bandwidth IP services network or passes them to the NT I/O (7302 ISAM) or GENC (7330 ISAM FTTN) card. > For expansion configurations with REMs, the NT on the 7330 FTTN host shelf switches traffic destined for remote subscribers to expansion ports on the GENC card via the shelf backplane. Traffic from remote subscribers is forwarded to the NT over the expansion links that connect to the GENC card on the host shelf. > The ECNT card supports inband or outband management traffic received through its connectors. Local management (craft terminal) is supported by the ECNT card through craft connections on the AACU (7302 ISAM) and PWIO (7330 ISAM) cards. The NT on the FTTN host shelf is used to manage REMs which cannot behave as standalone units.

The GENC provides a relay-based matrix and monitor circuitry to connect the test in and test out signals with the backplane for connection to the appropriate applique (the applique uses relays to connect to the appropriate line). It is the GENC that controls the TAP activity LED on the PWIO to indicate that MTA-based testing or monitoring is in progress. > GENC-E : an alarm control and host expansion interface unit that performs multiple functions and provides additional optical GE connectivity and expansion links for the ARAM-D shelf. > GENC-F : an alarm control and host expansion interface unit that performs multiple functions, including ITSC (integrated test and sealing current implemented on a daughter board), and provides additional optical GE connectivity and expansion links for the ARAM-D shelf.

> On the SMAS-card the MAC-addresses of the NT/service hub that will be used for management, are stored. When the system boots, the service hub gets its MAC-address(es) from the SMAS-card. The 24 MAC-addresses for each port on the SHUB, are stored on the PROM of the SMAS-card. The reason why the MAC-addresses are stored on a separate card, that only contains a remote inventory of the ISAM shelf, is that if it would be on the NT and the NT would fail, the network might have trouble. The MAC-address will have been learned and if you replace the failing NT by another one, a new MAC-address would have to be learned. What if the old arpentry first has to age? (e.g. a delay of 5 minutes). With the MAC-addresses on the SMAS card, any NT will get the same MAC-addresses after replacement, so the switches in the network dont need to learn any new MAC-addresses from the NTs. > The SMAS card as depicted on the slide is only used in 7302 ISAM CO XD. For 7330 FTTN XD, the SMAS functionality is integrated on the PWIO card.

> The slide above shows the 7302 ISAMs FD system architecture. > The universal slot concept in the FD equipment practice allows the 7302 ISAM-FD shelf to accommodate line termination cards and splitter cards. Therefore the 7302 ISAM FD shelf (NSFX-A) can be configured as LT shelf, as splitter shelf or as a mixed shelf. A mixed shelf combines LT/splitter pairs, with front cabling to interconnect LT and splitter. > The NFXS-A shelf is used for the 7302 ISAM-FD. The shelf has 16 universal slots, 2 NT slots and 1 NTIO slot. This way NT redundancy is supported. However the second NT slot and NTIO slot can also be used as universal slot, increasing the capacity to 18 slots. > The NT board - as with the XD equipment practice - contains an integrated aggregation function with a total capacity of 24 Gbps which is commonly referred to as the service hub (SHUB). There are two ethernet switches on the NT having a capacity of 12 Gbps each, which means the total switching capacity is 24 Gbps, corresponding with 16 GE ASAM links + 8 extra Ethernet links. These extra Ethernet links can then be used as uplink, subtended links or directly connected end-user links. > The NT cards for FD equipment practice can terminate 2 external Ethernet links. The NTIO is providing the connectivity to the outside world for the 6 additional links. > In the case where the second NT slot and NTIO slot are used as universal slots, 2 of these 8 Ethernet links are used as ASAM-links leaving us with 6 uplinks available on the SHUB. As said before the NT in FD equipment provides connectivity to the outside world for two of these links. So in that case 4 uplinks will remain unused. (uptil R3.2)

> Clocking and alarm control unit functionality are also provided on the NT > Each LT card is connected with the NT (SHUB) via the backpanel using a 1 GE electrical interface (ASAM-links). The backplane of the FD however is ready to support evolution to higher densities and higher subscriber bandwidths. > Powering and other general shelf functionality (e.g. visual alarm indicators) (= the power unit) is integrated in the 7302 ISAM FD shelf . This way the FD shelf can operate as a a standalone unit, allowing the operator to install the 7302 ISAM FD in any standard ETSI 2200 rack.. > You do not find the TAU module on this drawing, although ISAM FD equipment practice provides this functionality in LT mode. MTA is not supported in combo mode. An RJ45 for test access (connection to TAU) is present on the NTIO ( see later), but the TAU module itself is on a TAUS-card which physically needs to be inserted in the splitter-shelf. > The SMAS functionality (Remote Inventory PROM) is placed in a socket which is plugged on the backplane.

> All the data that passes through the 7302 ISAM-FD will always pass through the NT. It is the 24 Gbps Ethernet aggregation switching function, i.e. the service hub residing on the NT that is responsible for the data forwarding towards the Ethernet aggregation network. > Another functionality of the NT-board is the control plane of the 7302 ISAM required e.g. for maintenance and operations, remote inventory information and shelf management. It provides management interfaces (LAN, CRAFT, RCRAFT) to the outside world and control interfaces towards the line termination (LT) boards and the network termination I/O. > On the NT resides an interface and media conversion block which provides 2 external Ethernet interfaces. One of the interfaces will certainly be used as network link. The remaining link can be used as subtending and/or network links. The media converter on the NT converts the electrical signal coming from the service hub into an optical signal. > Whether a clock function (BITS) interface is present on the NT or not will depend on the type of NT card. > NT redundancy is supported. > In the ISAM FD equipment practice the ACU module is integrated on the NT board as well. It is the ACU-module on the NT board that collects up to five external alarms, AC fail alarm, door alarm, fuse alarm and two fan fail alarms and sends them to the NT. The ACU-module sends its alarms to the NT board which transfers these signals to the element management system.

Other 16 slots are universal slots. universal slots can accommodate LT board types, server board types and splitter board types. Hence, splitters can be mixed with LTs in a shelf or be deployed separately/externally. A mixed shelf combines LT/splitter pairs, with front cabling to interconnect LT and splitter.(see later in this presentation) > The NTIO slot and the NT-B slot can also be assigned as universal slot. Such assignment turns the shelf into a 18-slot shelf. Note: A 17-slot configuration, where only NTIO slot or NT-B slot is assigned as universal slot, is currently not supported.

> The 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD 8/10 slot FD ETSI shelf/subrack (NFXS-B) can be deployed at either the Central Office (CO), or in a remote location (which can be in an outside cabinet). The shelf can be mounted horizontally in 19 or ETSI rack . > Like the 7302 ISAM-FD shelf (NFXS-A) the NFXS-B is a shelf with universal slot concept and reduced backpanel architecture. Reduced backpanel architecture in the sense that no connector area for subscriber, xDSL and narrowband interfaces are present on the backpanel. External cabling is applied directly to front access connectors on the line termination boards. Initial multi-ADSL cards have 48-port density, but higher density cards can also be accommodated within the shelf (future) > Max 10 LT boards (8 + 2) in one 7330 FD sub-rack means that the maximum number of xDSL lines that one 7330 ISAM FD system can support now is 48*10=480 lines. > The 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD has expansion capabilities to remote expansion modules. The 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD host shelf perceives remote LT units as though they were installed locally on the host shelf itself, adding them to its total number of LT units.

> The 7330 FD subrack physically has three areas: the card: card cage containing slots for NT, NTIO, LT and splitter boards. the fan area: This area provides housing for a separate fan unit. Power unit and cable connection area. This area houses connectors for the power supply, circuit breakers, subrack lamps and connectors for alarm cabling > The shelf has 12 horizontal slots for pluggable boards. > A mandatory GFC card takes the bottom position of the shelf. The GFC card takes up powering and other general shelf functionality (e.g. visual alarm indicators). > Above the slot for the GFC card, three slots are foreseen for NT-A, NTIO and NT-B. The other 8 slots are universal slots. universal slots can accommodate LT board types, Server board types and splitter board types. Such assignment turns the shelf into a 10-slot shelf. Note: A 9-slot configuration, where only NTIO slot or NT-B slot is assigned as universal slot, is currently not supported.) > Besides some exceptions you can state that in general the 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD uses the same boards as the CO-system (7302 ISAM-FD). > slot numbering is bottom up (below legacy numbering is used):

> At this stage the only NANT card existing is the NANT-A. (>R3.1). Two variants exist: with or witouth Bits interface. > the NANT card performs Ethernet switching and control functions for the 7302 and the 733ISAM FTTN-FD equipment, as well as for any connected remote expansion units. It handles the xDSL, the shelf, and the switching data path. The SHUB is integrated on the NANT board. > The NANT board can be placed in the 7302 ISAM equipment as well as in the 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD equipment. The number of LT cards, external ethernet interfaces and/or expansion links will depend in which type of shelf the card is inserted. > The NANT card handles high-bandwidth IP services for xDSL subscribers by providing a 24 Gigabit Ethernet switching fabric. In the downstream direction, high-bandwidth IP services enter the network termination side of the 7302 ISAM-FD or 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD over optical or electrical connectivity at the NANT card or through optical connectivity at the NT I/O card. > The NANT card switches the Ethernet IP traffic. The appropriate packets for each connected xDSL subscriber are then forwarded over the backplane by an LT unit. In the upstream direction, the NANT card receives Ethernet packets from the LT units over the backplane. The NANT card either switches the Ethernet packets to the high-bandwidth IP services network or passes them to the NT I/O card for transmission to the high-bandwidth IP services network. > For expansion configurations with remote expansion units, the NT unit on the 7330 ISAM FTTN-FD host shelf switches traffic destined for remote subscribers to expansion ports on the NT I/O card via the shelf backplane. Traffic from remote subscribers is forwarded to the NT unit over the expansion links that connect to the NT I/O card on the host shelf.

> In general, the NCNC-B-C card is a NT I/O applique which interfaces with the NT board. It provides additional GE interfaces to the FD subrack. (>R3.2) > The NCNC-B serves as an NT I/O applique for the 7302 ISAM FD and 7330 FTTN ISAM FD. It provides 6 slots for up to 6 SFP GE interface modules which are external to the NCNC-B board. In case the NCNC-B is mounted in a 7302 ISAM FD shelf the NCNC-B is providing additional uplinks to the network, subtending links or directly connected end-user links. When mounted in a 7330 ISAM FTTN FD shelf however, these links can also be used to connect Remote expansion Modules (REMs) to the FD subrack. The 6 links of the NCNC-B can be used as expansion links. Support of # of expansion links will depend on Release. The NCNC-B supports Metallic Test Access (MTA) by providing a serial TAUS interface to the TAU module, providing communication between the 7302 ISAM NT and the Test Access unit (TAU) of the splitter shelf. As stated before, when the ISAM FD shelf is used as combo shelf, MTA is not supported. > The NCNC-C serves as an NT I/O applique for 7330 FTTN ISAM FD only and provides 12 slots for up to 12 SFP GE interface modules which are external to the NCNC-C board. > NELT-A card is intended for the following applications: P2P FTTU applications. A dedicated fiber from the ISAM to each user. This can be both for residential applications (FTTH) as well as for SME/SOHO applications. For this application the port density is typically as large as possible, and this to minimize the CO cost per user. The optical transceiver technology requirement is usually FE (e.g. 100Base-BX10) as this suffices the BW needs and is a bit more cost effective than GE transceivers. Fixed Mobile Convergence application. In this application a number of wireless base stations can be aggregated on the ISAM rather than a dedicated mobile aggregation node. This is particularly of interest for operators who already have ISAM deployed for DSL-based services, as they only have to add this Ethernet LT card rather than to install a dedicated node for this application, thereby saving a lot of CAPEX and OPEX costs. The considered development of WiMAX controller functionality on ISAM also has to be seen in this context. Prime interest is the support for aggregation of Wimax base stations (Evolium 9100 in particular), but in principle 3G backhaul could also be foreseen. The optical link between the base station and the ISAM is typically FE, as the total BW aggregated per Wimax base station is 50 Mbps at most.

NRCD-A New equipment REM-FD Control board DC input

The Remote Expansion Module Flexible Density DC Controller Board has three functions:
PSU (Power Supply Unit) DC DC converter
DC power dual feed (-48 V / -60 V) with two branches (RETA/BATA and RETB/BATB)

Controller External Interfaces

123

> PSU A DC input voltage enters the unit at the controller board, where the necessary filtering, fuses, switches and surge protection is implemented. The -48V is distributed to the other slot positions via the backplane. On the controller board, the -48V input voltage is converted to a 12VDC bus voltage for powering the fan unit and a 3V3 bus voltage used to supply the On-Board Point-Of-Load (POL) converter. The power consumption of the SB-REM is maximally 300 W (peak) and 200 W (average) when powered from the NRCD-A. Power is applied to both BAT-A and BAT-B inputs, to minimize the voltage drop on the boards. It uses the one with the highest absolute voltage. It switches automatically to the other supply branch if a voltage drop or failure of the initial supply branch occurs. > Controller The controller functions include: Interconnections between the controller board and the other slot positions via the backplane Dying gasp functionality A link with the host via the Man Machine Interface (MMI) RS-232 Control signals for active/standby functionality and 8KHz reference clock generation Control of the fan unit, for this purpose 12V fan power, PWM signals for fan speed control and tacho feedback signals are implemented. A fan present and fan ID signal is received Scanning of five external alarm inputs and driving of two external alarm outputs Local alarm scanning (fan-alarm, DC-input alarms, temperature alarms and SFP alarms Handling of over-temperature shutdown. > External Interfaces Next to the power input the controller board has the following features: Alarm I/O interface On/Off Switch Alarm Cut-Off (ACO) switch LEDs for ACO, Fan alarm, Alarm, System, and Power Two SFP interfaces Ethernet Interface Craft interface

NRCA-A New equipment REM-FD Control board AC input

The Remote Expansion Module Flexible Density AC Controller Board has three functions:
PSU (Power Supply Unit) AC Controller External Interfaces DC converter
AC power single feed connector 220-240 VAC to an -48 VDC voltage

124

> PSU The NRCA-A first transforms the 220 VAC to an -48 VDC voltage. The -48VDC is distributed to the other slot positions via the backplane. On the controller board, the -48VDC input voltage is converted to a 12VDC bus voltage for powering the fan unit and a 3V3 bus voltage used to supply the On-Board Point-Of-Load (POL) converter. The power consumption of the SB-REM is maximally 110 W when powered from the NRCA-A. > Controller The controller functions include: Interconnections between the controller board and the other slot positions via the backplane Dying gasp functionality A link with the host via the Man Machine Interface (MMI) RS-232 Control of the fan unit, for this purpose 12V fan power, PWM signals for fan speed control and tacho feedback signals are implemented.
