History and Mission

Senior Leaders & Scholars Fellowship

Due to the successful and efficient use of its resources during the 15 years of active investment operations, HAEF was able achieve significant long-term impact in support of its original goal of promoting free enterprise in Hungary. The Fund was also able to realize financial success from many of its investments, so that there was a substantial pool of capital available at the end of its active investment period. Consequently, the Fund created a new vision to further its mission and began the process of liquidating its portfolio investments with the intention of returning half of the funds to the U.S. Treasury and creating a scholarship fund with the other half. In early 2004, it established HAESF as a major legacy fellowship program with the aim of further supporting economic development in Hungary and fostering ties between Hungary and the U.S. by providing accomplished and promising Hungarians with professional development opportunities in the U.S. Now in our seventh year, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce the 2010 class of HAESF participants under four different programs and scholarship opportunities. They were selected from a pool of talented applicants in recognition of their outstanding qualifications and potential to build professional framework for long lasting impact in Hungary.

In 1989, amidst the continuous disintegration of Communism, the United States Congress enacted the Support for East European Democracy Act (SEED), which authorized the creation of enterprise funds to assist the development of private market economies in Central and Eastern Europe. Between 1989 and 1994 the U.S. Congress, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), appropriated a total of $1.3 billion to establish ten new investment funds, known collectively as the Enterprise Funds, throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund, HAEF, was established as one of the original Enterprise Funds through a grant of $72.5 million. It was a unique venture capital fund tasked with achieving critical economic development goals while serving as a model for effective, efficient and transparent investment practices. Its practical aim was to promote the private sector in Hungary by financing small and medium-sized private enterprises through loans, grants, equity investments, feasibility studies, technical assistance, training, insurance, guarantees, and other measures.

gota Dobos is the director of the Centre for Foreign Language Education and Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Corvinus University of Budapest. Previously she worked for the Faculty of Public Administration and was involved not only in the foreign language education of public administration students but also in the training of elected and appointed local government officials. gota has worked as a trainer in several projects managed by the Institute of Continuing Education of the Faculty of Public Administration and professional organizations like the Association of Local Governments since her internship at ICMA, Washington in 1995, which was followed by a USAID-funded Hungarian Public Administration Program. Her project responded to the demand for the improvement of the efficiency of the Hungarian adult training practice, which has been accompanied by an increased interest in the competence-based approach to training public administration professionals. gotas research project indicates a gradual shift in Hungary to the practice-oriented professional development of public service professionals, tailored to the organizational and personal needs, and addressing the challenges of the continuously changing professional environment. The changes in the attitudes to human capital development in the public sector necessarily result in the need for revising traditional training methodology, and applying new approaches to facilitate the desired competence development. The aim of the research project, also connected to gotas doctoral thesis research, is the analysis of the American adult continuing education practice with special regard to civil service leadership development. ICMA training resources and practice served as the starting point, but were further enriched by the experiences gained in Athens, Georgia, where gota had the chance to also meet with the representatives of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia and Athens Clark County. By presenting the American best practices at her home institution, gota hopes to contribute to its adaptation in the relevant adult training field in Hungary.

Spring 2010

Impact:
I am a Volunteer Visiting Fellow at the Davis Institute of The Heritage Foundation, one of the major think tanks in the nations capital. During my work I am focusing on international security, terrorism and cyber-security. Writing Heritage Backgrounders, conducting research on the above mentioned fields for shared and own projects are among my main responsibilities. I live in Van Ness, North-West Washington, D.C., near the Hungarian Embassy and the Rock Creek Park. The neighborhood is just wonderful and my landlady is really helpful in making my time in the United States worth to remember with her unique insight in DC politics and U.S. history.

Impact:
I served as a Junior Project Manager and Project Management Assistant at SSFM International. My main projects were the curtain wall replacement in the Queens Medical Centers Pauahi Wing as well as water system improvements at the Hawaii State Hospital. My responsibilities included the development of project management plans, managed my design team, organized coordination meetings and site visits, some administrative duties such as creating certain official documents, reports and monitoring and controlling quality, reviewing plans, budgeting, project database maintenance and liaise with the companys clients and design team. During my year in Hawaii, I lived in three different cities: downtown Honolulu in a high rise building, in Wahiawa, a small town in the middle of the island, about one hour from Honolulu, with the family owning the house. My favorite location was the third place where I lived: Kailua on the windward side with close access to the beach. In my spare time I had the chance to go on fantastic hiking trails, get acquainted with sea life, and just enjoying the lush vegetation, waterfalls, beaches and the mountains of Hawaii.

Be prepared for a lifetime chance and try to accomplish everything that you want while you are in the U.S.!
HAESFs Budapest Office and CIEE were always helpful and provided the program participants with all the available information to be found and worth to know about life and work in the United States. Nothing can be compared to an American work experience. Working with the best in the field on a daily basis gives a huge advantage and it depends on us how we use this opportunity. The advantage of working in a very competitive English language working environment, the network opportunities, the personal and professional growth in knowledge make altogether an immense positive impact on the job prospects and career goals. Only one suggestion for future participants: Be prepared for a lifetime chance and try to accomplish everything that you want while you are in the U.S.! After returning home I will finish my Ph.D. Degree and use the knowledge acquired in the U.S., either in the public or private sector to build a better future for Hungary.

My ultimate carrier goal is to own an architecture office and become a foremost consultant in Hungary. I believe my internship in the U.S. greatly supports such endeavors.
There are only a very few people on my field with excellent English proficiency and international experience who know the difference in practice between the project management techniques in Hungary and in the U.S. It is a huge advantage. Project management is communication. More experience in more cultures, and different languages (especially in a place like Hawaii where there are many cultures at the same time) is highly valuable. On my return from the U.S. I am focusing on construction technologies, possibly teaching, and doing a Ph.D. program and hope that the construction business rebounds in Hungary. I am primarily interested in managing complex building, urban design and community development projects. My ultimate carrier goal is to own an architecture office and become a foremost consultant in Hungary. I believe my internship program in the U.S. greatly supports such endeavors.

Spring 2010

Host organization: National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute

Impact:
I work at the Cancer and Cell Biology Branch as a Research Intern. Since cancer is a very complex process, our lab uses different biological approaches (immunology, molecular biology and cell biology) to find potential targets for molecular targeted therapies against this cruel disease. I am involved in different projects. I am currently working on investigating signaling pathways in skin tumorigenesis with my supervisor as I finished my own project after six months. The exact title is: The role of TRADD in TNF-Alpha Signaling in Skin Carcinogenesis. I am a well integrated member of the lab now and work easily with all the others. I got the basics of cancer and cell biology and could acquire different methods and techniques that will help me in starting my Ph.D. studies in the field of molecular cancer biology. I chose to live in Washington, D.C., since I grew up in a big city. I have one roommate in a small apartment. Our neighborhood is called Glover Park as in the middle of the area there is a huge park with some deers and other animals, and is close to two main universities of District of Columbia. It is very safe and quiet, lived mainly by young people and families. There are many possibilities for doing sports and you can also find nice restaurants with delicious food from all over the world and bars where people are familiar with each other. I have traveled together with some other interns from my group and mainly on the East Coast. Since DC is close to New York I visited the HAESF interns located in New York City several times. I also went to Boston and Philadelphia for a weekend and in the summer we drove around the Virginia-Maryland area including Ocean City, a famous beach in Maryland.

Now I have a much better chance to get accepted to one of the best [Ph.D.] programs and can start my work with excellent professional experience.
People are very nice and helpful, nature is amazing and traveling and having fun is easy. Washington has a lot of festivals and cultural attractions, concerts so it is very difficult to be bored in your spare time. I was planning to apply for a Ph.D. position in cancer biology before I came to the U.S. Now I have a much better chance to get accepted to one of the best programs and can start my work with excellent professional experience. My career goal is to acquire the Doctoral Degree in biomedical sciences and then work as a researcher at a university or pharmaceautical company to contribute Hungarys research work and in the field of cancer biology. After spending a year in one of the best research institute in the world I am positive that I have better chances to find a position and evaluate all this experience I gained at NIH.

DnieL german
Host organization: TerraCycle Location: Trenton, New Jersey

Fall 2010

Impact:
I assist the plastic Engineering Department, and investigate how to improve properties of particular plastics and composites to meet specific applications. My typical tasks include running various test equipment and categorize plastics based on set rubrics. I also develop profiles for various waste streams and investigate how to improve properties of particular plastics and composites to meet specific applications. I have gained hands-on experience in recycling, engineering, plastics and learned how to define and categorize the markets by pre-determined skill set of each recycler as well as prospective licensing partners.

My Host Organization has grown into one of the fastest growing green companies in the world and in fact has its very own show Garbage Moguls on the National Geographic Channel.
My Host Organization, TerraCycles purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste, and they do this by creating national recycling systems for the previously non-recyclables. The process starts by offering collection programs to collect waste and then convert the collected waste into a wide range of products and materials. The company hopes to eliminate the idea of waste by creating collection and solution systems for anything that today ends up in our trash. Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a 20-year-old Princeton University freshman, a young Hungarian, TerraCycle began by producing organic fertilizer using soda bottles. My Host Organization has grown into one of the fastest growing green companies in the world and in fact has its very own show, Garbage Moguls on the National Geographic Channel. I am living in six-bedroom home with five flat mates. The house is located within biking distance from the office. I have also visited my friends and some of the HAESF interns in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Occasionally I travel together with my colleagues, sometimes for business, sometimes for fun. Last time we attended the Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans. I hope the international experience and network will help me to get ahead of all of the other environmental engineering graduate students on the Hungarian labor market. During this internship I received a really good hands-on experience in engineering and also in acquiring management skills. Both will greatly help my carrier in the future.

Host organization: Temple University of Medicine,

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Impact:
During my internship I was working at Temple University, School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Dr. Yuri Persidskyss laboratory in Philadelphia. The specific goal of my training was the investigation of the blood-brain barrier under pathological conditions such as hypoxia and neuroinflammation. This laboratory provided me with an ideal opportunity to expand my research skills at a laboratory with such a huge experience in the field of molecular neurobiology. Therefore in the first three months I was involved in a project studying the role of GSK3-beta in brain capillary endothelial cells during neuroinflammation. During this work I was supervised by an expert postdoctoral fellow of the group who acquainted me with the technique of molecular cloning. In the meantime I got familiar with DNAplasmid preparation, different types of PCR techniques, basic cell culture methods and transfection of human cell cultures and fluorescence microscopy as well. While the in vitro techniques were introduced to me, I was also involved in the study of the cranial window technique, a new in vivo method which was launched for our researcher group just during that time. During my independent studies I have examined in vivo whether the selective activation of the cannabinoid type-2 receptor (CB2R) can affect cerebral vascular inflammatory response and barrier function. During my independent work I was assessing whether the CB2 receptor activation can reduce the leukocyte-endothelial interactions in the mouse brain under inflammation in multi-organs. I used O-1966, a novel, highly selective cannabinoid receptor 2-type agonist, to activate the CB2 receptor. In an additional study, we intended to characterize the blood-brain barrier dysfunction in traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, TBI is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, especially in children and young adults. Accordingly I really wanted to take part in this project as a responsible researcher. In December 2010 I had a great opportunity to present our results from ongoing studies at a very prestigious blood-brain barrier conference in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

Traveling was one of my favorite parts of my one year that I spent in the States. I went to Utah and Arizona states to visit the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River and the Arches. I also visited my friends and other HAESF participants in the States mostly in Washington D.C. and in New York because they are easy to access by bus and it usually take just a few hours. Usually I went to New Brunswick, NJ, every Friday evening, where a fantastic Hungarian folk dance group, the Csrdngl Folk Ensemble exists. I was a member of this group, I was dancing, playing folk music, and performing the ensembles performances. I had a lot of friends there and it was a great time, and I am truly glad because I could contribute to the cultural life of the American-Hungarians. Before I went to the U.S. I already started my Ph.D. studies and right after my return I rejoined the same researcher team. The techniques that I got familiar with are novel to neuroscience in Hungary and thus very valuable for transferring this knowledge to others. I think this one year experience is going to make me competitive in terms of getting a good job in my profession in the near future. I am striving to get enough experimental results and publications to receive my Ph.D. Degree in a few years. As I mentioned I notably expanded my research skills at Temple University thanks to the HAESF. I have not decided whether I want to continue my academic career or I would like to find a job at a biotechnological company after receiving my Ph.D. but this one year experience can potentially help me in both fields.

I was a member of this [folk dance] group...dancing, playing folk music, and performing in the ensembles performances. I had a lot of friends there and it was a great time, and I am truly glad because I could contribute to the cultural life of the American-Hungarians.

Host organization: Lloyds TSB Bank Location: New York, New York

Spring 2010

anna KeLLer
Host organization: Religions for Peace Location: New York, New York

Spring 2010

Impact:
Ive been participating in the activities of the Alternative Investments team within Lloyds Banking Group. I had several own projects with a full autonomy. I made some simple portfolio analytics; attended investor meetings and capital introduction events; participated in manager selection due diligence. I also acquired analytical skills as most of the information that I was exposed to required an in-depth analysis of statistical data in order to determine the mean variance optimization models required to better allocate assets within a portfolio. I also gained knowledge on quantitative and qualitative aspects of the research process. I also wrote monthly portfolio commentary and analytics for investors (with loose management control).

Impact:
Due to the special structure and work style of non-profit organizations I am very lucky enough to cooperate with the managers of Religions for Peace on a largely equal basis. I am primarily responsible for print and web design, the branding issues of the movement numerating more than 80 affiliates worldwide, social media presence, event coordination and management, photo and video production as well as maintaining archiving records, but I also take part in other communications activities, like copy writing and editing, production and distribution of a weekly e-newsletter, campaign implementation, online data management and constituent database management among other daily tasks. I share an apartment with an Italian girl in Woodside Queens, just a few subway stops from work. The neighborhood is friendly, culturally diverse and more affordable than Manhattan; still it is not too long of a commute to downtown Manhattan. In addition, Flushing Meadows Corona Park a park where the scene from Men in Black in which the evil alien is just about to leave Earth to fulfill his evil plan, but Will Smith stops them was shot is pretty close too.

I definitely believe the internship experience is very useful in this path as it is a very important building block in someones professional life.
Operational knowledge is essential in these matters as a significant part of the manager selection effort when selecting hedge funds lies in analyzing the structure as well as the principles involved. Data analysis and risk management is crucial in this as back testing is important to establish whether a specific strategy performed as expected in the past. I have also assisted the Vice President and the Special Projects and Hedge Fund Manager with projects focusing on hedge funds, one of the fastest growing sub-sectors within asset management and received training in investment methodology training. I lived in a semi-detached house in a residential area in central Queens. The house itself had four or five bedrooms, the host family lived there and I also had roommates. The the location of my home was ideal as it was not far from the subway station. Downtown was some 40 minutes away, and the neighborhood was a ten minute walk away from the biggest mall in Queens. I have traveled extensively to places within an easy reach from NYC: Washington, D.C., Boston, New Jersey, Hamptons, Chicago, and Upstate New York. My interest and background provided a narrow career path. Eventually I would like to work in portfolio management/asset management. I definitely believe the internship experience is very useful in this path as it is a very important building block in someones professional life.

Be brave enough to do what you like and seek out the programs you might enjoy.
Travelling in the U.S., and nearby, was one of the best experiences I had here, Boston was beautiful, Washington, D.C. was amazing, they really do sell very tasty crab cakes in Baltimore, a pilgrimage to Woodstock is lots of fun, but my favorite place after New York was Philadelphia, that might easily be the home of the nicest people in the country (though some might argue with me on this). Be brave enough to do what you like and seek out the programs you might enjoy. And when you are already there: dont be afraid of people, because lots of friendships can be made just by being at the right place. Especially in the nonprofit environment in Hungary just as everywhere the diversity of skills is highly important due to the fact that organizations are often in lack of resources. Having the chance not only to see but also to work in so many fields of communications throughout the year raises my prospects considerably in the job market. One day I would like to start my own communications agency working only with nonprofit organizations. Besides getting to know the practical sides of so many segments of communications processes both online and offline, even on international/intercultural levels, the thing I learnt in the U.S. that will help me a lot in achieving this is the courage and ability to small-talk.

miHLy KroLyi
Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Fall 2010

Host organization: Massachusetts General Hospital

Impact:
As a research fellow in the cardiac imaging lab of the Massachusetts General Hospital I got involved into several projects investigating coronary artery atherosclerotic plaques. My main focus is computed tomography (CT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As a member of our proper team, including 5-6 fellows, first I got involved with 2-3 subprojects and after three months I got two of my own projects that I am fully responsible for. My work is mainly computer based using different work-stations (coregistration, further evaluation of the images), literature research and writing of abstracts and manuscripts. However with my own projects I have learnt several aspects of project management and I have had meetings with different companies in the last months as well. I am sharing an apartment with one of the other HAESF fellows here in Boston. We have our own rooms and an additional living room with kitchen. The apartment is located in the Fenway, one of the greenest parts of the city, nice, quiet neighborhood, lots of parks, shops and restaurants around, and home of the Red Sox, Fenway Park, just about five minutes away. My workplace is in a convenient location, about 15-20 minutes away by bike. During my fellowship I had the possibility to visit the other HAESF fellows in New York City and in Washington, D.C. and spend a long weekend together. Further we also met in Houston, Texas at another HAESF fellows place who hosted us for Christmas and thus could escape from the hard winter days of Boston. My last trip was to the Cape Cod National Seashore to explore the famous lighthouses for a weekend, just a two hour drive from Boston.

Do not hesitate to contact previous HAESF fellows for any advice, experience gained from previous fellows helped me to find my place here abroad as quickly as I could.
As our pre-trip orientation organized by HAESF was quite proper and extensive, we arrived well prepared to the U.S. and I cannot mention any big issues. However to find an adequate apartment and settle down quickly is maybe the most important to build a nice environment for your stay and you should consider to spend less for living to save money or spend more for a nicer home. Do not hesitate to contact previous HAESF fellows for any advice, experience gained from previous fellows helped me to find my place here abroad as quickly as I could. My situation is quite unique as my colleague who has spent in the same lab three years has developed a similar project in Hungary, so I can keep working as a Ph.D. student in Budapest in the same field after my return to Hungary. Accordingly the one year spent here in Boston gives me the great possibility to gain knowledge that I can bring home and make the most of it. My short-term career goal is to gain a Ph.D. Degree built on cardiac imaging, mainly on the topic I got involved here in the U.S. As here in my current lab there is a great possibility to learn the necessary skills and get the publication impact, this internship highly supports to reach my short term goals. Later I would like to specialize as a cardiologist and cardiac imaging as it is a highly developing part of this field of medicine where hopefully I can use the recently gained knowledge. The HAESF scholarship gives fellows a great possibility to widen their knowledge and field of view and it is well organized in any aspects of our stay not to mention its generosity. In my opinion the most important would be to insert this year to our future goals to make the most out of it and not just to have it as an unique, nice experience.

Fall 2010

Host organization: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Host organization: CSIS | Center for Strategic and Location: Washington, D.C.

Impact:
I work as a research fellow and do research on breast cancer in a laboratory at Harvard Medical School. I am involved in a project that is about studying the metastasis process of breast cancer. I have here possibility to learn some molecular biology methods. I also have opportunity to attend university lectures that are related to any kind of clinical and molecular research topics. I also had the chance to attend a lecture held by a Nobel laureate. I live in the center of Boston in a very nice, quiet area, very close to the famous Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. We are renting a quite a big apartment together with Mihly Krolyi, another HAESF intern. We have laundry facilities in the building, we are close to stores, cinemas, T-lines and we also have our own bikes that are very enjoyable to use in the spring especially after such a long and cold New England winter.

Impact:
As an intern at CSIS New European Democracies Project my task is to follow and assess developments in Central Eastern Europe particularly in the Members of the Visegrd Group. Typical tasks include the writing of Policy Briefs and short papers for the programs blog, compiling a select briefing on a daily bases, assisting colleagues with background research and organizing or attending conferences related to our Program. Interns are given a high level of responsibility especially when working on their own research for the blog. I live in a residential area of Washington, D.C., called Petworth in a two story row-house with three other tenants. I have my own room and share a bathroom with another roommate. The neighborhood is and African-American area with many small shops around. Its close to Columbia Heights, an up and coming neighborhood with bigger shops, lively nightlife and renovated parks. I have travelled to Florida for Thanksgiving, visiting my roommates family which was a unique cultural experience for me. The travels to other HAESF participants are yet to come, but Ive hosted some of them in Washington, D.C. already. My suggestion is that you have a friend to stay with, if possible, for the first one or two weeks until you get used to the U.S. and find your accommodation. Knowing that someone will pick you up at the airport, and that there is no imminent pressure on finding a place to live takes a lot of weight off your shoulders. In my case this was a HAESF intern from the previous group.

Even if I thought I was thoroughly prepared for my time in the U.S. and HAESF and CIEE provided ample information as to what to expect, there were some unexpected events, but thats part of the entire experience.
I traveled to Florida during the Christmas season with a few other HAESF fellows. We took a long road trip around Florida, escaping the cold and snow of Boston even if only for a short period of time. I also had the chance to travel to the nations capital, Washington D.C. for a weekend to visit some other HAESF participants. It was fun meeting my new friends again! A few HAESF scholars are coming to visit us in Boston a couple of weeks time and I am planning to go to New York City and Chicago for a weekend. Even if I thought I was thoroughly prepared for my time in the U.S., HAESF and CIEE provided ample information as to what to expect, there were some unexpected events, but thats part of the entire experience. My professional experience in the U.S. will definitely help me in my medical research work later in Hungary. I can use the techniques that I have learnt here later on in my life and that will probably bring me closer to my Ph.D. Degree which I am planning to do after getting home. I am planning to do a Ph.D. Degree on breast cancer research and the experience of this year will help me a lot with accomplishing this plan not just because of the manual techniques that I have learnt here but with the theoretical knowledge that I got during the lots of seminars I took part in.

Im grateful for the HAESF Professional Internship Program for providing such a unique experience that will have a great impact both on my personal and my professional future.
A professional experience in the U.S. will be invaluable when Ill return to Hungary. Therefore Im not afraid of not finding a job. However finding a job that matches my expectations and values my experiences by accepting some of my ideas will be much harder. Id like to join the public administration working on international security affairs. During my internship Ive learned a lot about my chosen field, acquired certain negotiation techniques and analytical thinking capabilities. Im much better at writing recommendations, policy papers and in convincing others in professional matters. Im grateful for the HAESF Professional Internship Program for providing such a unique experience that will have a great impact both on my personal and my professional future.

Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI)

Fall 2010

Location: Washington, D.C.

Impact:
My duties as a Research Fellow includes assisting the Research and Assessment lawyers with their work; supporting a variety of research projects related to rule of law reform including the areas of access to justice and human rights, anti-corruption and public integrity, criminal law reform and anti-human trafficking, judicial reform, legal education reform and civic education, legal profession reform, and womens rights. Thanks to HAESF...I learned how to work in a diverse and multicultural environment.

I have five young professionals as roommates in a two-story family house with garden on the outskirts of Washington D.C., at the border of Maryland, my daily commute is about 40 minutes to work, and shops for most needs can be found just within a 10 minute walk. My neighborhood includes beautiful parks and trails, the Catholic University of America, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the National Arboretum. I also had the opportunity to meet with other HAESF program participants in New York City. At some point of our homesickness we decided to spend Christmas time together in Texas. After visiting the fellows and the Space Center in Houston we took a road trip through the Lone Star State. And this was just one of the trips where we made memories for a lifetime. I believe that my career prospects will be much better thanks to the HAESF Professional Internship Program. I could improve my professional knowledge and English terminology in a really intense way. I learned how to work in a diverse and multicultural environment. The acquired professional experience gives me not only a perfect foundation but a springboard for my career. I would like to promote the rule of law and the democratic principles in Hungary. My goal is to become an expert in human rights issues and work with legal reform projects. Thanks to the HAESF internship, I familiarized myself with the non-profit sector and the international development industry. I got the opportunity to work with an international development program, which operates in more than 40 countries and focuses on the rule of law.

Fall 2010

Pter Kvri
Host organization: Chemonics International Location: Washington, D.C.

Spring 2010

Impact:
I started my internship at the Global CSR & Sustainability Practice of Edelman, the worlds largest independent PR firm. In the first three months I supported the development of thought-leadership pieces and presentations with marketing purposes. My other responsibilities included internal knowledge management and coordinating with affiliates. Later, due to internal structural changes, I transitioned to the New York CSR & Sustainability Team of Edelman. Here I am responsible for CSR-related media monitoring for the Global CSR Practice and the NY CSR Team (100+ members) that I send out twice a week. I also work on a non-profit account where I am responsible for activities such as account management; media relations, including the development of media lists, pitching media and coordinating interview opportunities with reporters; and competitive research. I also assisted in the management of a major event for one of our clients.

Impact:
I intern at an international development consulting firm called Chemonics International that is a USAID contractor. Chemonics has two main types of work: new business development and project management, and I work on new business development. New business development units are responsible for creating bids for USAID tenders. Once a bid is awarded money by USAID, project management units take over to actually manage and administer the projects. New business development includes among others tracking upcoming business opportunities, carrying out technical research, partnering with subcontractors, hiring key personnel, writing technical section, and preparing cost strategies for our proposals. The ultimate goal of new business development is to come up with the best possible proposal for a USAID tender that is both technically solid and also cost effective. I live in a single house in Hyattsville, MD, in the northeastern suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area. My place is a comfortable 10 minute walk from West Hyattsville metro stop (a 20 minute ride from Downtown DC) and a 10 minute walk from the Prince Georges Plaza shopping mall full of shops and grocery stores. Hyattsville is a middle class residential area with a mixture of African-American, Latino, and Asian communities. I have done a lot of traveling. I have been to New York City many times as it is only a four hour bus ride from Washington. I also went to Ocean City, MD, in September 2010 which is a three hour ride from DC and a popular beach destination for the Washingtonians in the summer. I visited both Boston and Chicago. In the Christmas break I did a round trip in Texas reaching out to Houston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Austin, and the NASA Space Center in Houston. In February 2011 I flew to South Florida to escape the cold weather visiting Miami, the Keys, Everglades National Park, and Fort Lauderdale.

In New York I had the chance [to] learn about the latest trends first-hand, which I am sure will be a great competitive advantage in the Hungarian market.
I live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, in a quiet and friendly neighborhood, five minutes away from Central Park and Riverside Park. I have traveled a lot in the U.S. Over Thanksgiving, I visited some of my American friends in Pittsburgh where I had the chance to have a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. I am optimistic about my job prospects after my return, given that both PR and CSR are highly relevant fields from a business perspective in Hungary. In New York I have the chance to meet or contact the most influential people in these fields and learn about the latest trends first-hand, which I am sure will be a great competitive advantage in the Hungarian market. I would like to work in the field of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), either in the corporate or the nonprofit sector. Working at a global PR firm allows me to have an insight into both of these sectors and into the communication between the two. As CSR originates from the U.S., I could not imagine any better environment to gain experience in this area. I am sure this experience will be incredibly valuable in Hungary where CSR is still in the process of becoming what it is in the States. I think HAESF provides a really unique and outstanding opportunity, both professionally and personally. Not only do I get incredibly valuable training, but I also get the chance to make new friends and travel all over the U.S. I am having the time of my life!

I think one of the most essential things is not necessarily the professional experience one can gain here but the level of professionalism in the personality.
One year working experience in the competitive U.S. environment is a huge asset in itself. One can really learn in the U.S. how to multitask, how to work effectively and how to use English as a working language. I think one of the most essential things is not necessarily the professional experience one can gain here but the level of professionalism in the personality. This experience is really about both professional and personal development and I think the latter gains more and more importance at a job interview especially at an entry level. This experience is a good reference for that, and I am convinced I will return to Hungary equipped with a higher level of working attitude, more professional English knowledge and with more confidence and ability to do multitasking. I have also learned here how important it is to participate in networking and to be proactive, initiative.

Host organization:

Fall 2010

Host organization: University of Massachusetts, Lowell Location: Lowell, Massachusetts

University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology

Location: Los Angeles, California

Impact:
I work on several projects at the Lowell Center. I participate at trainings and conferences (e.g Sustainability Action Summer Institute, National Pollution Prevention Roundtable). I prepare a manual for American companies on their roles under REACH regulation and the impact of the regulation on their business practices. I was invited to present a nationwide webinar about REACH regulation for government representatives. I also work on a project in collaboration with the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry at UC Berkeley and the Toxics Use Reduction Institute in Lowell, MA on perfluorinated compounds. I am writing a paper on the environmental aspects/fate, usage and manufacture patterns of these chemicals. This project helps me to improve my writing and analytical skills. I audit two classes at UMass Lowell. I learn about the legal system and environmental regulations of the United States so I can compare those to the European system and regulations. I live in a family house with two roommates. There are four rooms and a nice backyard. The neighborhood is quiet, there are some stores a 10 minute drive from my home. Lowell is a small city outside of Boston. Im glad I gained working experience abroad and I could improve my English skills. I believe I will be able to find a job with many responsibilities and opportunities to learn when I return to Hungary.

Impact:
The training I am participating in is about the field of medical physics, in particular Positron Emission Tomography. This type of medical imaging modality was invented at UCLA and therefore the work place is one of the best around the world in this scientific area. We were working on the comparison of two commercial PET cameras from an image quality point of view. We also started a project on better patient scanning protocol for the PET cameras with the goal of receiving more comparable images along the patient body from the point of image quality. My tasks include up to date are some programming for the tomography image processing and a few activity source measurements on the PET scanners. This is ideal for a biophysicist: experiments and some data processing.

Given that around Christmas we would like to be with our families...the best thing we could do [at] the time was to meet some HAESF friends during the holiday season.
I live in Santa Monica; I have found this place to live via the friends of my parents. Santa Monica is a beautiful place and the neighborhood is peaceful and quiet. I have been to New York and Philadelphia around Christmas time and New Years Day. Given that around Christmas we would like to be with our families and because we miss them, the best thing we could do the time was to meet some HAESF friends during the holiday season. My advice is that you should not be afraid! Sometimes it could be very confusing what to do first when you have a long list of tasks in a foreign country, but you can handle it. And of course there are cultural differences and it takes time to get used to them. Dont hesitate to contact other participants or CIEE as they can help you and solve issues assisting you. Also contact other participants in your group as soon as possible. I contacted them just few months after I arrived and it because of that I could not be there at a trip they organized. Traveling together and meeting other participants helps to share the problems and good experiences as well. For a biophysicist it is almost always the requirement to continue the education after Master Degree in a Ph.D. program. In the U.S. many universities and research groups are doing research with the highest technology achievements and support. Spending a year at an American research facility is an excellent opportunity to those who intend to apply into a Ph.D. program in Hungary. My goal is to work on such medical technology which can help the improvement of diagnosis for patients. In medical science the UCLA is one of the best universities, therefore the professional experience and the skills I can learn here are probably will be efficient to continue this type of work back in Hungary and learning from others always helps to achieve the goals we have.

Working in the U.S. provided me with multicultural working experience which is important to have in my field as environmental issues are beyond borders and international collaboration is needed to work on solutions.
I would like to continue to work in the area of my field of interest. I hope to have a job which can give me possibilities to make a real difference in environmental issues. Working in the U.S. provided me with multicultural working experience which is important to have in my field as environmental issues are beyond borders and international collaboration is needed to work on solutions. Organizations from Europe and all over the world have to work together to achieve goals. Also, working on my own projects helped me to improve several skills.

anna Losonczi
College of Architecture

Fall 2010

Host organization: Georgia Institute of Technology, Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Impact:
I work with the research group of visual perception at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. I mostly work individually, occasionally in a group, and under the supervision of my advising professor. Georgia Tech also offers a few classes that are relevant to my research interest and I was given the opportunity to audit these to complement my training and research. There are several very exciting topics at the cross-section of architecture and cognitive psychology that are of great interest to me. I am also learning a great deal about teaching methodology at Georgia Tech. I am also part of a research group that is focused on the relation between buildings spatial layouts and users social behaviors. I have also just applied to attend an international conference with a paper about an experiment that I have developed and I got interesting results. The work supposed to present in this paper stems from the broad hypothesis that architectural interest is aroused when a setting is able to inspire a richness and variety of perception and alternative visual and spatial interpretations. I rent a room in a six-room-house in a neighborhood where all houses are rented to Georgia Tech students from all over the world. It is next to campus, so I can walk to my office. Outside campus, or to reach any shops or attractions I usually drive. We went to discover the shores of Florida on Christmas holiday with other HAESF interns. This year the field trip organized by HAESF took place also in Florida, and I was very happy to return. We stayed longer after the official trip days, and we made a laid-back weekend with some of the girls. I am planning to visit them in New York and in Washington, D.C. Also we make sometimes short trips in Georgia and Alabama. It is quite an adventure.

I have learned a lot about research methods, and I have thousands of ideas and plans for the future in Hungary! I will continue teaching in Graduate School of Architecture in the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. I would like to give some classes in the topic of visual perception, and I would like to motivate student research activity. I will also continue working on the topic of psychology and architecture. In Georgia Tech I have learned how to keep an eye on ongoing findings and how to be involved in the international research discussions. In the longer run, I would like to establish an educational program in Hungary that connects different fields with architecture (psychology, sociology) and encourages a design method based on research. My experiences in Georgia Tech give me a lot of ideas and inspiration; also I will keep contact with my colleagues and professors in the future. Another goal of mine is to apply scientific findings in Hungarian practical work (building design, urban design and realization). Georgia Tech has several research projects that have practical outcomes. Introduction of those projects could help to set up similar proposals in the design and constructing activity in Hungary.

I have learned a lot about research methods, and I have thousands of ideas and plans for the future in Hungary!
If you are coming for a research, learn about the research group as much as you can in advance. The amount of information is never ending, do your best before, still you will pile up readings for years. Also it helps to find your interests and learn about your responsibilities in the company or research group earlier.

Host organization: Pyramid Flowers Location: Oxnard, California

Fall 2010

Impact:
My internship at Pyramid Flowers helps me to gain all those practical and theoretical information that will be necessary to establish my own enterprise. At the beginning I did ground work as well, now I am doing the watering plan at a certain area and learning giving pesticide work orders for crops as well in the greenhouses and fields. For this I do insect counts on yellow sticky cards every week and walk through the fields looking for diseases we should do spraying against. I was responsible for bouvardias before replanting while they were in the propagation house. I also do insect level monitoring at the gerbera greenhouse and now I am starting doing a research on improving vase life of different gerbera varieties produced by the company. I worked in the sales office and with the company owner as well. My home is in Ventura which is a nice beach town next to Oxnard where the company is located. I live in a condo with one roommate (he is the owner too) in a typical American neighborhood that is only 10 minutes drive from the Pacific Ocean.

My career goal is having my own enterprise. I have the best people to learn from and they have fantastic business approach which is really good to learn.
Shops and the gym are very close. It is also close to Santa Barbara which is known as the American Riviera. Los Angeles is also just a ninety minute drive from here. At Thanksgiving I traveled to San Francisco and took Highway one on my way back which was one of the most amazing trips of my life. During Christmas with some other participants I took a Texas road trip (Houston, San Antonio, Austin), I also spent a weekend in Santa Barbara and in Los Angeles. We will have definitely advantage against those who has not taken part in this amazing internship program. As for me I already have some international connections that can help me staring my company. I think this professional training and experience will largely contribute to my future plans and make me more competitive on the labor market.
I think HAESF Orientation Day before our traveling was rather thorough and full of useful advice. We were provided with detailed technical information about how to settle down, good advice such as how to communicate with our supervisor or how to handle the psychological challenges for instance cultural shock or homesickness that may arise. I think this professional training and experience will largely contribute to my future plans and make me more competitive on the labor market. This program enables me to experience the American pragmatism and see and acquire new approaches and ideas on my field what makes it easier to find an adequate job for my qualifications. I always wanted to work on the fields of human rights and this internship reinforced my career goal. This experience will contribute to my professionalism and enable me to become a highly qualified expert in diaspora politics and minority policy. After my return to Hungary I would like to work either for civil rights foundations in the non-profit sector or in the public service. This program enables me to experience the American pragmatism and see and acquire new approaches and ideas on my field what makes it easier to find an adequate job for my qualifications.

Impact:
I am interning at Hungarian Human Rights Foundation (HHRF) where I can gain experience in non-profit management. HHRF is devoted to the rights of 2.5 million ethnic Hungarians in Central Europe. We monitor the human rights conditions of these communities and collect, translate, analyze and disseminate reliable studies and reports on the human rights condition of Hungarian minority communities outside of Hungary. The Foundation continuously informs international decision-makers in the U.S. Congress and in the European Parliament about the issues affecting these communities. My duties at HHRF range from administrative tasks, press monitoring and editing reports and publications for decision makers to maintaining public relations with the HungarianAmerican community, fundraising and maintaining HHRFs website. Now I am fully involved in the lobby- and awareness rising campaign against the recent human rights violations by drafting publications on recent developments in Central Europe and I am also responsible for writing and editing our newsletter. I live in east Manhattan, in the neighborhood called Spanish Harlem. My apartment has a good location as the subway is right at the corner, Central Park is a two minute walk away and museums such as MET, Guggenheim and The Museum of the City of New York are in a walking distance as well. It is a large spacious accommodation with three bedrooms, a giant living-room and a huge kitchen. It is a unique international apartment as with my four roommates we constantly host couch-surfers from all around the world. Our HAESF group is a great cohesive community so we regularly visit one another, spend holidays and travel together. During my internship I spent my Christmas holidays with a bunch of HAESF fellows in Texas on a road trip and the New Years Eve in New Orleans. Apart from holidays we traveled to Philadelphia, Miami and Key West together, visited one another in Boston and Washington, D.C. and spent a wonderful time in Orlando on the HAESF Enrichment Trip. The future is promising too as we keep on planning some more travels inside and outside of the U.S.

I love my internship! Perfect fit, great company in an amazing city. I work at a real estate agency dealing with luxury rentals and sales in the Manhattan real estate market. But this company is more about than real estate. I am working on different real estate websites and doing search engine optimization, social media, creating Facebook and Twitter pages for different products, services and companies. I am also responsible for selecting the new interns and maintaining the positive energy and love in the office.

Impact:
After asking around about the projects in the two labs we have, me and my bosses mutually decided that I will be assigned to a protein engineering. Right now Im making anti-cancer fusion proteins. Basically I have full control over my work which means that the main goals and aims are given to me by my immediate boss, but I have to plan and design everything else. Actually we usually talk through all main goals, so I can tell my opinion and ideas as well. As I said Im fully responsible to plan all the experiments required to achieve the goal, I have to and able to order anything I need, basically without restrictions. My working hours are flexible, and nobody mind if I work in the weekends which I usually do. In this phase of the project Im doing lots of cloning, which requires doing PCRs restriction digestions, ligations and lots of sequence designing in silico. The next phase is to actually produce the proteins in mammalian cells, and test them. This means Ill do ELISA screening a lot. Since I started the project from the very beginning, it was a good experience how to build a project from scratch. I have been to Texas, New York City, and Washington, D.C. Our group has bonded a lot. We keep in touch and visit each other whenever we can. While visiting the U.S. Capitol I have learned much about how the United States works, how the Senate and the House of Representatives work and things alike.

I love my internship! Perfect fit, great company in an amazing city.

Currently I live on the Upper East Side, 3 minutes walking from Central Park and right at the subway stop. It takes me maximum 20 minutes to get to my workplace from door to door. This is a huge apartment with lots of couchsurfers from all part of the world. I live here with another HAESF intern. There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge kitchen and living room. I live in Harlem, which is a Mexican and Spanish neighborhood with cheap food and good restaurants. I spent Christmas in Texas, road-tripping with many program participants. In Houston, TX, an American friend was guiding us who I got to know while I was volunteering in Hungary in my hometown with Habitat for Humanity. We spent New Years Eve in New Orleans and immediately when I got back to NYC on New Years Day I met an American friend from Florida with whom I was volunteering also. In January I made a one-day trip to Philadelphia with the New Yorker HAESF participants. At the end of February with the HAESF participants who are staying on the East Coast we escaped from the snow to the Sunshine State, Florida for a long weekend. We visited the biggest subtropical national park in the United States, Everglades and the southernmost point of the United States. As spring arrived we celebrated the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC with at least 10 other program participants, just before the field trip. Working at a multinational company upon returning to Hungary will not be a big challenge as here in the United States, especially in New York City I got used to strong work ethics, long working hours and using English as a working language. They say, if you can work in New York, you can work anywhere else. In the business sector where I work it will be much easier to find a job after a oneyear internship experience in the US. I would like to work for General Electric in their marketing department when I return to Hungary. Working there I could completely utilize all the knowledge I am gaining here about social media and search engine optimization as I can read the most up-to date articles and launch new websites. Having a one-year internship experience in an English-speaking environment will greatly enhance the chances to obtain an MBA also. Thank you so much once again for everything to HAESF and CIEE!

Dare to dream big. Here you can make it. And believe that youre worthy of it.
I have learned a considerable amount of new techniques. I have also attended a class, Synthetic Biology so I think I have a better perspective on the subject now. Also I try to expertise myself in Matlab, Flux Balance Analysis, things that are used in Hungary as well but few have real expertise. My everyday work also requires a number of bioinformatics work so Id be able to pass my practical knowledge to others. As a direct contribution Ill be able to conduct advanced level research when I get home because Ill have a years real lab experience. As an indirect benefit to Hungary and future generations I plan to teach ate my home university in Szeged so I can pass whatever I have learnt so far and will learn during my stay. In the long run I plan to be a reseacher-university teacher. Id really like to spread the idea and methods of synthetic biology because in Hungary not many people do this. I hope my experience will grant me a leading role in this. This internship provided me a good practical experience, and some insight on how to operate a lab, how to plan projects. Using this knowledge I hope that one day I can start my own lab and be a PI. As a short term benefit using this experience and hopefully a paper, I think Ill be able to achieve my Ph.D. faster. I came here without any foreign experience. I have never been an ERASMUS student or applied for any other foreign scholarship. Yet I stood my ground. My message is to the future applicants is this: Dare to dream big. Here you can make it. And believe that youre worthy of it.

Fall 2010

Impact:
As part of the project development group at EIement Markets I was working on carbon and renewable energy project feasibility, with emphasis on cost estimations; performed daily quality assurance/quality checks, and managed the database on all of the existing projects as well. During my internship I had studied the applied technologies, and methods in biogas industry (especially biogas retrieval from landfills). As I had became more familiar with it, I started to work on the Green House Gas (GHG) reduction verification process, which is one of the most important scope of duties regarding to a biogas project. The project developer must prove through the Climate Action Reserves (CAR) regulations that the claimed grant for the GHG reduction was substantial. I also had the chance to take part in 12 project verifications. Regarding to this part of my job, I was responsible for getting ready the Emission Reduction Calculations, besides the daily routine I mentioned previously. Eventually, I made the Project Design Document (PDD) for one GHG project as well, which is the final step before the company claims the value of the credits. It was an exciting task and huge challenge since the final amount of the credits depended on my work, before the GHG credit validation. It means that I was given the opportunity to work on each scope of activities at the department and had a chance to find extra profit to the company in many cases. On the other hand, a different type of biogas plant had been purchased in February by EM, called Huckabay Ridge Anaerobic Digestion Facility (HRADF). HRADF is one of the largest plants of its kind in North America and processes agricultural manure and organics (residues from food, grease, and other organic compounds) into pipeline quality renewable natural gas. Because this treatment is completely different from the projects that EM owned previously, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with this as well. On the whole I had a wonderful time in Houston, TX at Element Markets, and returned with a tremendous amount of experience which I would have never been able to get without this internship.

Impact:
Currently I am involved in financial planning of different alternative energy projects. I started working at the company I was an entry level analyst first, however, over time I have developed an interest in more in-depth understanding of energy related project financials. This was greatly welcomed by the host company and I was granted the opportunity to work with the CFO and the risk group so after I have proven myself with lesser projects, I got engaged in projects that require more responsibility, creativity and therefore providing me the opportunity of gaining a wider and also more in-depth industrial understanding. Therefore now my tasks include more responsibility and creativity that I hoped for in the beginning.

I believe that this Internship greatly increased competitive advantage on the labor market in Hungary. During these months I have probably learnt already more than I would have been able to at home during the same amount of time.
I live in the West University neighborhood in Houston and it is a very nice neighborhood. Andrs Romn, another HAESF intern in Houston was my roommate. There are a couple of shops nearby, I would recommend it to everyone to move to an area that has a shopping mall. To date I have traveled only in Texas this was the road trip at Christmas time that many other HAESF participants have already mentioned. We also traveled to New Orleans for the New Years celebrations. I am making plans for more trips around the country. I believe that the Internship greatly increased competitive advantage on the labor market in Hungary. During these seven months I have probably learnt already more than I would have been able to at home during the same amount of time. The Internship I consider to be a booster of achieving my long term goal of becoming an expert in financial planning and alternative/renewable energy markets.

I believe I have outstanding chance to get better job opportunities compared to others who do not have professional experience from abroad.
I believe I have outstanding chance to get better job opportunities compared to others who do not have professional experience from abroad. I presume I will have a good chance to work in this field in few years from now. The biogas industry has just begun to expand in Hungary. The alternative energy industry here at home is right before the boom. I think we will succeed and I am glad that I had a chance to glance into EMs life, and the processes in the U.S.

Spring 2010

Host organization: Atelier New York Architecture

Impact:
The beginning of my training served as a transition period. Ive seen construction sites, Ive measured several old tenements building in Manhattan and Ive made lots of drafting with AutoCAD. Through these assignments Ive got to know the imperial measuring system, wooden-frame structured buildings, American architectural standards like furniture dimensions, drawing scales, paper sizes and Ive improved my AutoCAD drawing skills as well. My first planning tasks were country house additions, expansions plans. I draw a roof elevation plan for a family house in New Haven and an L-shape addition for the brother of my boss in Baltimore. In the second half of my training I got involved more my main field of interest. I had to prepare interior design concepts, 3D renderings, furniture designs like fancy separation walls, art storage places for wealthy New Yorkers. Most of the cases I had direct communication with the clients through emails sometimes phone calls, but Ive always consulted the drawings with my supervisor before filing them. I live in Upper East Side, Manhattan. This area of New York City is considered to be one of the best. Quite understandable that its so popular: it has a wide range of services including: restaurants, bars, laundries, gyms, libraries; its very close to Central Park, to the famous museums and last but not least is a very safe neighborhood. I live two blocks from the Hungarian House, and the Hungarian Catholic, and Reformed churches.

Obviously if a Budapest based American, or any other international company searches for Hungarian architects this one-year long internship in my resume will help me to have a better consideration when I will apply for the job. On the practical side, even if I wont construct wooden-framed houses, and I wont measure in inches and fractional feet anymore in Hungary, I think this training was essential for me to achieve my future goals. Ive gained new experiences, new knowledge in fields of companies, new materials, and lights while Ive enlarged my social network. My distant-future goal is establishing a Hungarian based architectural and design company that will collaborate with Italian and American architects. With my team I would like to participate in international architectural and design contests. It would be great to create a constructive, working network through my favorite countries. Hopefully I will bring back home some American optimism, and business skills. During the fieldtrip, the lunch and learn sessions in the office, and even on a Harlem entrepreneur graduation party Ive heard lots of success stories and good ideas. I feel filled up with new plans, energy and confidence, and I would like to challenge myself like a young brave entrepreneur in Hungary.

I feel filled up with new plans, energy and confidence, and I would like to challenge myself like a young brave entrepreneur in Hungary.
We were quite close to each other on the East Coast with the other HAESF participants so together we made several visits in Boston, New York, Washington and Philadelphia. Apart from these weekend travels my three biggest trips were in Las Vegas with my Hungarian and Italian friends, Guatemala with Anna Keller, Janos Hasko and Magdi Djurec, and Puerto Rico with Teodora Kristof and Andras Roman. In Vegas Ive seen Grand Canyon from a helicopter, the supreme level of luxury and real casino life. In Puerto Rico we were walking in real rainforest (El Yunque) we were swimming in the bioluminescent Mosquito bay. In Guatemala it was amazing walking through Maya temples in Tikal, climbing up volcanoes, jumping to crystal clear water from a cliff in the jungle. First time we saw a real coconut, we traveled on chicken buses, boats, we experienced the Chichicastenango market and even if the end of the journey I was very sick, I think it was the best one-week journey of my life.
