zoneofmaximumtemperature.Thisislikelytocoincidewiththezoneofmaximumgasflow
andisthereforeagoodsamplingpointforbothtemperatureandgasanalysis.

ChecktheOxygenTestwiththeCarbonDioxideTest
If continuous-reading oxygen test equipment is installed in boiler plant, use oxygen reading.
Occasionallyuseportabletestequipmentthatchecksforbothoxygenandcarbondioxide.Ifthecar-
bondioxidetestdoesnotgivethesameresultsastheoxygentest,somethingiswrong.One(orboth)
ofthetestscouldbeerroneous,perhapsbecauseofstalechemicalsordriftinginstrumentcalibration.
Anotherpossibilityisthatoutsideairisbeingpickedupalongwiththefluegas. Thisoccursifthe
combustiongasareaoperatesundernegativepressureandthereareleaksintheboilercasing.
CarbonMonoxideTest
Thecarbonmonoxidecontentoffluegasisagoodindicatorofincompletecombustionwithall
typesoffuels,aslongastheycontaincarbon. Carbonmonoxideinthefluegasisminimalwith
ordinaryamountsofexcessair,butitrisesabruptlyassoonasfuelcombustionstartstobeincom-
plete.

LabAnalysisshouldbecarriedoutforfuel,fluegasandwaterincoordinationwithlabper-
sonnel.

Thesteamtable,psychometricchart,calculatoraretobearrangedforcomputationofboil-
erefficiency.
