MICRO MOTORS
Introduction: Micromotors are fairly constant speed electric motors which are an Important part of tape recorder. Such micromotor take a very small current. Besides, the micromotors operate on a very small range of voltage. The major application of micro motors is for tape recorders. However, the manufacture of micro motors is actually a challenge to industries manufacturing tape recorders or other electrical components manufacturing industries as special tools and equipments of precision are needed for the manufacture of tiny components viz winding, armature winding etc. Micromotor consists of a coiling of either metal or plastic material encapsulated inside it. There are two parts (1) Stationary (2) Moving. The stationary part (also called stator) is a fixed permanent magnet while the moving or rotating part is called armature which consists of coils wound on che laminated cores. Armature winding is supported by a pilot rod and commutator. A direct current generator rurns as a motor that converts electrical power to mechanical power. Its armature leads are connected to a suitable electric supply of either 3V, 4.5V, 6V, 7.5 volts or 9 volts etc. Properties: 1. They are fairly constant speed motors. 2. The electric motors are considered an important part of the tape recorders. 3. They are called electric motors or micro motors. 4. They take a very small current. 5. They run the spools on which the tape is wound and unwound. 6. They run on very small range of voltage, say 12 volts. Uses & Applications: 1. Micromotors are used in tape recorders big or small and serve as the driving mechanism for the tape. 2. Micromotor or electric motors are used as components of tape recorder. 3. They run the spools on which tape is wound and unwound. 4. Micromotor is used to pull the tape off the supply spool and over the recording and playing at a steady speed when one is playing or recording the tape. Market Survey: The manufacture of micromotors for the tape recorders have a good scope for their production on a small scale. The raw materials are available indigeneously. Also micro motors have very good future demand in view of the rapidly developing tape recorder industry in particular and electronics industry in general. Manufacture Process: It comprises the following : Winding the Cores for Field: The field consists of a magnetic field produced by electric current passing through the core winding of the field. Electric winding consists of very fine copper wire wound on the core of a material. As the wire is insulated, the windings are insulated from each other. The magnetic substance placed in this field becomes a magnet. Armature Winding: The armature core is made out of a magnetic material. Armature body is made from mild steel cylinder made on a precision lathe. Casing: Casing for the field winding of whole micro motor is made of very fine M.S. sheet. Necessary housing is provided for accommodating the field windings which serve as the magnetic field. Insulated Windings Wire: The trend these days is towards the standardization on the enamelled wire made from synthetic resin of polyvinyl acetate type known under such trade names viz. formex, formvar, etc. The single formex wires can be used for the starting windings of single phase motor like micro motors in smaller ratings where the lot space is limited. Heavy Formex: H.F. wires have double enamel coating. It is the wire used for the major part of the winding. Triple Formex: T.F. wire has three enamel coatings. Colored Formex Wire: The wire can be obtained in three colours, natural, green and yellow. Armature Coils: On relatively micrometers the armature coils are wound from round wire, but as the size of the conductor increases the poor space factor associated with round wire leads to the use of square and rectangular or ribbon wires. Cores: Laminated core plates are from 0.4 to 0.5 mm thick and insulated with paper or by a thin coating of a suitable compound. For normal machines good sheet steel is used, but for totally enclosed micro motors where it is essential to keep down the value of the iron losses, it is common to employ silicon steel.
