RESILIENT ARCHITECTURE OF KASHMIR

Kashmiri traditional Architecture has a unique design of building involving wood, mud and bricks . The architecture of the Kashmir region is dependant on its geography. We need to keep the different things in mind while we built structures here, particularly climatic conditions in Kashmir demand a different kind of architecture style. ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES OF KASHMIR
White marble and red sandstone was favored. Semi-precious gemstones were popular (jade, crystal, etc.) LANDSCAPE GARDENING Used arches sparingly. Symmetry and balance stressed. Used octagons a lot. Landscape gardening. Open spaces and signature streets As they are characteristic of the campus

DESIGN CONCEPT
Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Medical College Hospital at Bemina ,Srinagar, Kashmir campus is home to an eclectic collection of high profile buildings scattered across a 43-acre urban campus. The distinctiveness of its iconic buildings and attractions the Space Needle, Key Arena, is fundamental to the architectural character of the campus There is also great cohesion across the campus with a network of landscaped plazas and open spaces. These stand out as elements of uniqueness. These design guidelines encourage design excellence in architectural concepts and execution of both foreground and background buildings.

CLIMATIC FEATURES FOR RESPONSIVE BUILDING DESIGNS :Srinagar has a HUMID SUBTROPICAL CLIMATE with a climate much cooler than what is found in much of the rest of India, due to its moderately high elevation and northerly position. The valley is surrounded by Himalayas on all sides. Winters are cool, with a January daily mean of 10.0 C (50.0 F), and temperature remains below freezing at night. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in winters and the only road that connects Srinagar with the rest of India may get blocked a few days due to avalanche. Summers are warm with a July daily mean of 30.1 C (86.2 F). The average annual rainfall is around . Spring is the wettest season while autumn is the driest. Highest temperature: 37 C (99 F); lowest 14 C (7 F)

HOSPITAL DESIGN (BUILT FOR FUTURE) An hospital design scheme that places both patients and the environment at the heart of the project, and brings the hospital into the city or townscape. The category is divided into two Awards, projects planned and not yet built, and projects built and operational. Entries must provide clear information to highlight that the project meets the following criteria: Strategy: Creates a sense of civic pride by bringing the hospital into the city or townscape through strategic master-planning. Place making: Creates an inspirational sense of place and a therapeutic environment for patients and visitors both inside and outside the building. Innovation: Demonstrates innovation in the model of care and provides an effective staff working environment to support a sense of belonging. Adaptability: Provides flexibility and adaptability to meet changing service needs. Sustainability: Demonstrates a vision for investment that responds to social, economic and environmental issues.

ENTRY AND EDGES

CAMPUS ENTRIES
Arrange and design buildings, open spaces and site elements to create welcoming entries to SKIMS . CIRCULATION Provide a variety of pedestrian routes that draw people into and through the Center.

NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTIONS Link the campus and the surrounding neighborhood with visual and physical.

STREETSCAPE AND EDGES Create a comfortable and welcoming pedestrian environment along the perimeter streets as an attractive edge that strengthens the identity of Seattle

LOCAL AVAILABLE MATERIALS

The first factor influencing the development of vernacular construction practices is related to the availability of local building materials. In many areas, the locally available resources have governed the use of the following constituent materials for walls: dobe (mud blocks or whole walls) asonry (stone, clay, or concrete blocks) imber Building Layout Another determining factor is the building layout, that is, the typical shape of a building plan, usually related to many cultural, historical, and urban planning traditions. Three main plan shapes have been identified in traditional buildings: Circular plan Rectangular plan Linear plan (row houses or wagon-houses in Romania) The circular floor plan offers the best resistance to earthquake forces. Building Size The third and final aspect relates to the size of a building. Based on their size, these buildings can be classified as: Single story ultistory buildings

CONCEPT :- SUSTAINABLE SITE PLANNING

NORTH SOUTH ORIENTATION.

COURTYARD CONCEPT Acts as a micro climate generator and thereby reduces energy consumption. A Landscape element LANDSCAPE AREAS MAXIMISED The main concern is the physical Articulation of space, the solids and voids, the negative and the positive. In addition, we try to include the effects of light, surface, shape and form. OPTIMISED BUILDING DEPTH To harvest maximum daylight. ENERGY EFFICIENCY SERVICE CORES ON HOT EAST WEST HIGH LEVELS OF INSULATION Minimize surface area-to-volume ratio. EFFICIENT HEATING OF AIR & WATER

AUDITORIUM
LOCATION PLAN RELATIONSHIP OF BUILDING AND OPEN SPACE Provide physical and visual connections between ground level interior uses and adjacent exterior routes and spaces where appropriate.

KEY PLAN

Open up the connection of the Amphitheater space to the east, allowing increased visibility for SKIMS and a more integrated amphitheater space.

TRAUMA BLOCK
FUNCTIONALITY is a key component in integrating architecture and the environment. that maintain an appropriate balance between optimum interior conditions and environmental performance by reacting in a controlled and holistic manner to changes in external or internal conditions and to occupant intervention

SITE FURNISHINGS
SEATING AND BENCHES Comfort is important to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Medical College Hospital at Bemina ,Srinagar, Kashmir campus visitors, and a variety of places to sit should be offered throughout the campus. Where part of the signature streets or open spaces, seating should be an element of continuity on campus, with a common attitude toward color, and aiming toward consistency over time.
Freestanding benches have been acquired over the years; matching the colors would help them serve as elements of continuity. STADIA IN MID OF CAMPUS Benches enhance design concepts, emphasizing ground lines or placed as objects in a space. Integrating benches into landscape and building edge conditions is encouraged.

CONCLUSION
The drive to go green is undoubtedly welcome as the problems of water shortage, energy crisis and climate change are seemingly here to stay. Also the green concept has to be developed for local context so that they can be still be applied within the local and financial needs.
