Linda Walker July 15, 2011 Understanding by Design Lesson Plan Title: Thomas Edison into the 21St Century Subject Matter Emphasis and Level: Social Studies 5th Grade Description: The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with life and technology at the turn of the 20th century in order to better understand the impact Edisons inventions had on Americans lives both yesterday and today. Georgia Performance Standards: Social Studies SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century. SS5H3.b Describe the impact on American life by Thomas Edison Understandings: Students will understand the importance of Thomas Edisons most important inventions. They will understand various ways the inventions changed peoples lives. They will understand the connection between Edisons inventions and the technology American enjoys today. Students will know: The important inventions of Thomas Edison The impact of the innovations of Thomas Edison in the 20th Century and beyond. Essential Questions: How was life in 1900 America different from life in America today? What were Thomas Edisons most significant inventions, and how did his inventions improve peoples lives in 1900? How have Thomas Edisons inventions impacted our lives as well? Students will be able to: Describe the kinds of technology available in 1900s America Compare and contrast their own lifestyles with that of Americans in the 1900s. Identify Thomas Edison's major inventions and explain how they were used and how they contributed to the quality of life in the 1900s.

Evidence of Understanding: Performance Tasks: As a final product of the lesson, students will use research graphic organizers to create a digital poster highlighting one of Thomas Edisons three major inventions and its evolution and impact on American life. Evidence: I will observe the students as they participate in class discussion and activities and conduct research on Thomas Edisons working life and inventions. Students will complete the research guide and resource notes graphic organizers, and self-assessment checklists. Students will be assessed by the teacher with a lesson rubric. Resources As noted in lesson activities and the following resources found at the end of this lesson plan. Research Guide Resource Notes Organizer Glog Creation checklist Student Self-Assessment checklist Lesson Assessment Rubric Learning Experience and Instruction: Activity 1 I will write the word technology on the board and ask students how they would define technology. After the class has a chance to brainstorm definitions of their own, they will look up the definition in dictionaries. The class will discuss the various definitions, and decide on one definition to write on the board for the class to learn and use. (Technology serves industry, like machines, or people, like computers, stereos and televisions. Technology can also be categorized into products that help people and products that entertain people.) I will ask them to imagine one week in their lives without a telephone. The students will discuss how the telephone and electric light may have changed life for Americans. (Student discussions will focus on the way each invention might have affected the following: business offices, homes, creation of new industries, farms, and leisure time and entertainment.)

Activity 2 I will explain to students that they are going to learn about what life and technology were like over one hundred years ago in America. Students will be asked to discuss what they think life and technology were like in the early 1900s. Student responses will be written on the whiteboard. I will share the Max Morath interview found at http://pbskids.org/wayback/tech1900/ with the students via the Promethean board. Students will then view a short early Edison movie at

After sharing the interview and videos, I will ask the students to compare the facts of the interview and videos with their predictions about what technology was like in the 1900s. Activity 3 Students will brainstorm about what they know about Thomas Edison and his inventions. I will explain to students that he was responsible for most of the inventions talked about in the Max Morath interview and in the videos they previously viewed. Students will then view a segment of American, the Story of Us on the importance of Edisons inventions
http://www.history.com/shows/america-the-story-of-us/videos/thomas-edison#thomas-edison . I will share my activity introduction and overview podcast, Thomas Edison with students. Lesson

research guides and notes organizers will be handed out to students. I will share the PCES ikeepbooks Thomas Edison file found at http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com/browse.asp?account=280967&t=7%2F15%2F2011+6%3A48 %3A02+PM and preview the various types of resources students will find on the Web sites that have been bookmarked. I will demonstrate to students how they should take notes using the note organizers and review the research guide. Students will then begin conducting research using media center and classroom PCs. Students will use the self-assessment checklist to insure they have met all the research criteria. Activity 4 Using their guide and notes, students will create a glog under my account at http://edu.glogster.com/ Students will use the glog assessment check list in creating their glog. After completing their posters, the students will discuss their glog as they are shared with the class. Internet Sites Bookmarked as student research resources:
