Indian Telecom market is one of the biggest in the world today as it is on its way to touch the 1 billion user mark this financial year. It took almost 10 years for mobile to really become a mass device after the prices for calls & devices came down. A lot happened during 2005-2010 and it can be termed as one of the golden periods of Indian wireless history. It was during this period only that doors were opened for new technologies like 3G & BWA. Successful auctions took place and we had companies with licenses to bring high speed networks in the country. The question is Has that really happened? Much was hyped for 3G but it has not turned out to be successful story so far and now we have 4G. We have joined the 4G club with Airtels roll out of TD-LTE networks in Kolkata & Bangalore. It has been a slow start but we are sure that high speed technologies will take less time then 2G to become a real hit. The mantra is going to be the same make it affordable. In 3G it is happening now and in 4G it will happen in coming years. LTE as a technology across the globe is evolving and it is good to see this time we joined in the initial stage not like 3G where it took 10 years.

Technology Focus
Long Term Evolution (LTE) Technology Overview
Abhishek Passi, Solution Manager, Technical Sales, ZTE TELECOM INDIA Pvt. Ltd. LTE is a standard for wireless data communications technology and an evolution of the GSM/UMTS standards. The goal of LTE is to increase the capacity and speed of wireless data networks using new DSP (digital signal processing) techniques and modulations.

What is the need of LTE?

From an End User/ consumer prospective: this could be a surprising factor to differentiate between the available Technologies such as 2G, 3G and CDMA. What point of difference does it make to my current association with the kind of services I am subscribed to? The key to answer this is FASTER & EFFECTIVE communication , the demand to have Contents available on your handset in a blink of eye, and in order to experience this Telco operator has to introduce LTE in the Network. Be it Multimedia, Chat, Movie, Online Gaming, Social Networking. There is demand of High Tech environment capable of delivering the contents instantly and simultaneously making you available ON with always connected with professional and personal relationships. The main advantages noticed by end users are the super-fast speed especially how quickly new connections are established, how fast web pages load and how much more responsive applications feel and the improved reliability in delivering this high performance throughout the coverage area.

The first step towards an IP based packet switched (in green in fig. below) solution was made with the evolution of GSM to GPRS, using the same air interface and access method, TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). UMTS was developed with a new access network, based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), to reach higher data rates and data volume The access network in UMTS emulates a circuit switched connection for real time services and a packet switched connection for datacom services (in black in fig.1). LTE The Evolved Packet System (EPS) is purely IP based. Both real time services and datacom services will be carried by the IP protocol. LTE or the E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Access Network) is the access part of the Evolved Packet System (EPS). The main requirements for the new access network are high spectral efficiency, high peak data rates, short round trip time and frequency flexibility.

Technology Evolution
LTE (both radio and core network evolution) is now on the market. Release 8 was frozen in December 2008 and this has been the basis for the first wave of LTE equipment. LTE specifications are very stable, with the added benefit of enhancements having been introduced in all subsequent 3GPP Releases. The LTE standard can be used with many different frequency bands. In North America, 700/ 800 and 1,700/ 1,900 MHz are planned to be used; 800, 1,800, 2,600 MHz in Europe; 1,800 and 2,600 MHz in Asia; and 1,800 MHz in Australia. GSM was developed to carry real time services, in a circuit switched manner, with data services only possible over a circuit switched modem connection, with very low data rates.

Network Elements in GSM,UMTS are Base Stations, Base Station Controller but as the technology is advanced to LTE the single entity e-NodeB is fully functional to operate with the Network and Communicate with the End User.

Progress of TD-LTE so far in India

Time Division Duplex (TDD) LTE, or TD-LTE, became a global technology in 2010. Important milestones included the first TD-LTE call in India broadband Wireless spectrum at 2.3 GHz. Emerging markets have been leading the charge in raising awareness of the potential of TD-LTE. In India, where fixed broadband penetration is below 1%, operators aim to complement 3G with TD-LTE. Commercial 4G network launches in India are a reality now with Kolkata and Bangalore going live. Bharti Airtel has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to build and operate its TD-LTE network in Maharashtra. Being part of Indias large-scale TD-LTE commercial rollout, we will deliver the TD-LTE network, end-user data devices, and newly introduced industrys first TD-LTE 6 pipes radio. Globally, Nokia Siemens Networks is leading in LTE deployments, having delivered more than half of all live LTE networks, and running half of the worlds TD-LTE trials. In India too, we are aiming at garnering an impressive TD-LTE market share. From networks to devices, Nokia Siemens Networks can offer a full range of TD-LTE solutions to Indian operators. We are engaged with all major BWA spectrum winners in India to conduct TD-LTE trials and we are collaborating with ecosystem partners to accelerate industrys progress towards comprehensive deployment of TD-LTE in the country. 4G over the BWA spectrum is important for the country, as it will allow operators to offer high speed, low latency data to the target enterprises and consumers. With 4G, the consumers will experience something very new. This technology ensures high-speed mobile broadband connectivity and a superior performance from mobile applications across a wide range of devices.

On spectrum for TD-LTE

Many countries throughout the world have large chunks of unpaired unused spectrum. History also suggests that unpaired spectrum will trade at a much lower price per MHz/population than its FDD equivalent. With large amount of available unpaired spectrum and growing capacity demands, TD-LTE has gained a lot of traction worldwide coupled with strong commitment from leading operators. As a specialist in mobile broadband, we remain committed towards working with telecom operators to further increase teledensity, enhance customer experience and empower communities. The National Telecom Policys focus on providing broadband for all is a visionary step ahead. Nokia Siemens Networks believes mobile broadband growth can be fuelled by 4G. We have significantly invested in advancing TDLTE so operators can reap the benefits of delivering mobile broadband using unpaired spectrum. Nokia Siemens Networks has introduced a Liquid Radio-based 6 pipes remote radio head* that uses the companys unique pipe approach to offer unprecedented flexibility in delivering TD-LTE. By covering three sectors with a single radio head, operators can reduce site costs by up to one-third. It is the first remote radio head that can support a 6sector TD-LTE site to deliver 80% more capacity and 40% more coverage as compared to traditional 3-sector sites. This enables higher data speeds, and considerably reduces total cost of ownership

'India is a global pioneer in TD-LTE'
.The need from the Indian consumer is clearly there and the Indian regulators, together with the key carriers, have responded to this need and have created an environment that allows LTE to leapfrog 3G and become the de-factor mobile broadband technology in India.
Eran Eshed, Co-founder and VP Marketing at Altair Semiconductor

India has joined the 4G club. How do you see the future of Indian Telecom?
The Indian market is very strategic for Altair. Although the regulatory and ecosystem dynamics are somewhat complex, these challenges are overshadowed by the huge potential that wireless and specifically 4G/LTE offer in terms of growth. Altair is one of the LTE semiconductor pioneers in India, and has been testing, trailing and supplying products to leading carriers such as Reliance Industries and Airtel for more than a year and a half.

consequently driving it to price points which are challenging when compared to other geographies. We identified this dynamic long ago and planned for a chipset that is optimized for the feature set and cost points of Indian carriers. This turned out to have been a very good move. I believe some of our competitors were caught off guard in that sense. We are already shipping the product and expect to ramp up significant volume as early as the first quarter of next year.

Like any technology, LTE also has its own value chain. At what level does Altair comes in and what role does it play in the technological evolution?
The traditional supply flow from chip companies like Altair is to ODM and OEMs who build devices such as USB dongles, indoor/outdoor routers, portable WiFi hotspots, etc. The model is no different in the Indian LTE value chain, however with another very important and direct dialog channel between us and the carriers. LTE is a relatively new technology and TD-LTE, being the younger standard variant, is even newer. India is a global pioneer in TD-LTE and in the process of planning and trialing their networks, carriers have worked closely with us and others to better understand the capabilities of the chipset which is the core engine behind the LTE device.

What contribution has Altair has made in the global LTE arena?
Altair was the first semiconductor company to sample an LTE chipset to market in September 2009. Since then, we have been involved in numerous trials with the worlds most prominent operators. We have assisted infrastructure partners in completing interoperability testing in more than 15 LTE bands, which is no small feat. We were also the first to ship a combined FDD and TDD LTE chipset and the first to demonstrate real-time handover between the two modes on a commercial network. Moreover, we have been involved in many industry standardization and qualification processes. Our most recent achievement was receiving chipset certification from Verizon Wireless, which is a very significant milestone for the company.

A few months ago you released a TDLTE chipset optimized for the Indian Market. How significant is this launch and what advantages will it bring to the Indian market?
The Indian telecom market is very unique in several aspects, one being the relatively low Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) from wireless services. This has a strong impact on the device cost, which is required by carriers to sustain a viable business model

What growth potential does Indian market hold for Altair? the What can the market expect to see next from Altair Semiconductor?
We have a very competitive product roadmap which we intend to announce soon. We plan to maintain our strong technology leadership position by introducing new and enhanced LTE chipsets that will support the most advanced revisions of the LTE standard. Such chipsets will include among other things, cutting edge features such as Carrier Aggregation, advanced MIMO receiver techniques and interference cancellation. It is quite an exciting time for the company so be sure to stay tuned.

We believe India represents the highest growth potential for LTE globally. The need from the Indian consumer is clearly there and the Indian regulators, together with the key carriers, have responded to this need and have created an environment that allows LTE to leapfrog 3G and become the de-factor mobile broadband technology in India. We have a strong local office with great staff who support both customers and carrier partners with their rollouts. Altair will continue investing in India, as we are very committed to playing a leading role in Indias LTE scene moving forward.

More effective LTE performance testing with Field to Lab methods
. Field to Lab tools can not only make it easier to run the tests but may also provide tools to visually compare and evaluate the RF conditions.
Erik Org, Senior Marketing Manager, Azimuth Systems

Across the wireless ecosystem, carriers, vendors, device and infrastructure OEMs all face a growing need to test under real world conditions. With the increasing number of MIMO protocols, the challenge to productively and effectively test devices and networks becomes even more difficult. It is essential to remember that the most lab based testing uses the static test scenarios from 3GPP in order to measure average or typical performance. But effective testing must do more, effective testing and effective test processes should enable lab based test teams to test a wide range of dynamic real world conditions in a reasonably short time. With todays complex protocols, its essential to incorporate real-world test methodologies throughout the design cycle.

Field to Lab tools can not only make it easier to run the tests but may also provide tools to visually compare and evaluate the RF conditions. Ideally, field testing should measure device performance across the widest possible range of real world conditions. Ideally, field testing should measure device performance across the widest possible range of real world conditions.

Recreating Field conditions in the lab with Field to Lab

When testing mobile devices, the device in the test lab should be exposed to the same changing environment experienced by a customer in the field. For many years, devicevalidation methodologies have used channelemulators configured with industry-approved and standardized channel models. Statistical representations of channel conditions are very useful in representing average RF environments needed for testing and certification. However, they dont capture the unique and specific conditions dynamically experienced by a device as is used on a network. Field-to-Lab testing, which recreates realworld channel conditions (collected from drive testing) in a network testbed (Fig. 1) can address this problem. Field to Lab methods can effectively bridge the gap between laboratory and field-measured results. By combining test methodologies including conducted test, in-lab replay of drive tests, and over-the-air performance testing, productdevelopment teams can create a comprehensive environment in the lab thats as realistic as possible. Subsequently, R&D and qualityassurance engineers can test products in the lab using both standard models and real-world conditions from actual field data collected from locations of interest. This drastically reduces the need for resource-intensive field testing. Such tests hold even greater value since they also can be performed across the full productdevelopment cycle.

Real World Testing

The ability to accurately predictin the labthe performance a user will experience in the field offers several key advantages and enables users to: Test against field conditions earlier in the design cycle than ever before enabling early discovery of field-related issues. Benchmark new devices against the golden routes used by carriers to verify and validate device performance Share test conditions between partners to accelerate collaboration and reduce the time to troubleshoot or debug problems Regression test new hardware, firmware, and software revisions against challenging real world RF conditions Performance benchmark possible firmware upgrades

Final pre-deployment testing often consists of device validation, performed in actual mobiledevice usage field conditions. However, device field testing across diverse conditions of terrain, population density, physical location, and motion is extremely time-consuming and costly. It also lacks repeatability.

Fig. 1. Field-to-lab testing for mobile devices offers a virtual scenario developed from real-world channel conditions collected from drive testing.

Field-to-lab methods can integrate actual drivetest scan logs into the testbeds used in carrier and equipment vendors labs. They can more effectively test commercial devices against field data collected over carriers golden drive test routes or at other key locations of interest in the actual network, where performance is critical.

a playback file for a given number of basestations, can be filtered, smoothed, and filled to ensure realistic playback conditions. Then the data is played back on the channel emulator. A playback control tool configures the channel emulator and streams the playback conditions to the channel emulators signal path running between the mobile device and the basestation. This offers the ability to characterize expected performance, reproduce and verify field issues, benchmark interoperability with other devices, and optimize performance algorithms. Consequently, wireless devices are more thoroughly tested before ever being deployed in the field, and theres considerably improved post-deployment troubleshooting and resolution.

Field to Lab Methods

Field-to-lab testing typically involves three phases: Collecting field data Conditioning the data for playback Playback of the field data on a channel emulator

Accordingly, the key components of a field-tolab methodology include a data source such as commercially available scanner or proprietary logging tool, a tool to map and filter scanner results from the possibly large number of sectors seen in the real world to the much smaller testbeds typically located in wireless test labs along with a playback tool. After commercial drive-test tools collect the device and network performance data, field-tolab test methodologies can condition, save, and reuse it as many times as required with many different devices. Because the tests are virtual, test labs can concatenate multiple drive-test logs and perform virtual field tests across multiple geographies without ever starting a vehicle. Drive-test data, which is converted into

Field-To-Lab Testing In Action

Recently, a leading handset manufacturer (who had already deployed field-to-lab testing to reduce software-development time, as well as improve time-to-market and product quality), found multiple scenarios in which they could effectively model or recreate real world performance. One scenario, the crossing cell, describes the situation where the UE is moving away from the cell to which it is attached (and sees lower and lower RSRP) and towards another cell (that exhibits increasing RSRP). The crossing cell exists where RSRP from both cells intersect. Testing against this known scenario was a good start. However, the test team used field-to-lab

tools to further exaggerate that setting. Thus, the handset manufacturer could now test products against the crossing cell scenario as well as confirm that the design margin was sufficient to handle a range of field conditions. Software changes necessary for additional performance margin were implemented and then regression-tested against multiple scenarios using end-to-end testbed management capability. The improved ability to rapidly test many devices against multiple drive-test profiles saved both the handset manufacturer and carrier a significant amount of time and money. Furthermore, field-to-lab testing is performed in the privacy and security of a companys own labs. No doubt, then, it provides the enhanced security needed when designing and developing groundbreaking new mobile devices versus drive testing. Equally important was their capability to easily perform RF profiling. An example of the results from RF environmental profiling is shown in Fig 2. In Figure 2, a RSRP distribution is shown for drive tests completed in Navi Mumbai and Kolkata, however multiple histograms can be shown to illustrate the distribution of several performance parameters for each drive and include RSRP, SINR and other KPIs. Effective test tools provide not only the results necessary to understand performance issues but also offer the visualization tools necessary to compare and evaluate relative performance across multiple environments. Specifically, visualization tools (for example, Azimuths AzMapper software package) can: a) Help companies choose the markets in which they want to do drive tests in (by choosing markets that offer different RF profiles and ignoring markets that look similar) Help identify the cause for an issue. For example, when there is an issue on the field (such as bad throughput), profiling would allow them to compare results across multiple drives and evaluate if the cause for a particular issue was a (perhaps) unique distribution of a performance indications (such as RSRP) that they observed throughout a drive Enable users to select the profiles they want to use in their labs (with FTL) to test their devices

The Value of Field to Lab
As the wireless industry introduces advanced new products, field testing has, and will continue to be, particularly important. Field-tolab testing accelerates performance testing, benchmarking, and troubleshooting of mobile devices against real-world conditions, while avoiding the substantial cost and time required for actual drive testing. However, the value of a field-to-lab test methodology goes beyond the accurate mapping of current drive-test profiles to the field. It also offers a strong visualization capability that makes it easier for carriers and device vendors to compare and contract RF environmental conditions. It also offers a common platform for sharing test environments (that capture challenging radio conditions) across the wireless ecosystem (Fig. 3). The sharing of playback files and test results up and down across the ecosystem achieves faster troubleshooting and lower development cost. With Field to Lab methods, operators and device vendors can share and compare results generated from common drive-test scenarios using the exact same playback files, ensuring true apples-to-apples comparisons. Field to Lab ensures a rapid feedback loop and a powerful collaborative test environment to perform more accurate and efficient testing, enhance product quality, and substantially reduce time-to-market.

Fig. 3. The feedback loop shows how information flow is facilitated and development time can be reduced when results are referenced to a common set of requirements.

.to match the end user experience, service providers need to test these LTE networks thoroughly before launch.

Sandeep Kapoor, Country Director - India, Communications Test, JDSU

The increased use of mobile devices for businesses and consumers worldwide have created tremendous demand for high speeds, reliability and high quality. As mobile operators look to 4G and LTE to deliver these services, it is important to keep in mind some best practices with regard to ensuring the high speed mobile networks facing unpredictable bandwidth demand operate at the highest quality. Lets take a look at TDLTE, and its role in the future of LTE and 4G mobile technologies. The launch of TD-LTE systems in Kolkata and Bangalore has brought cheers for the mobile data subscribers. This has undoubtedly opened new era in the mobile broadband. As per Global mobile Supplier Association (GSA) report on Evolution to LTE, July 11, 2012 LTE TDD is gaining market traction globally which includes nine commercial LTE TDD systems around the world with network deployments, service launches, trials, etc especially in and around India, Australia, Russia, Middle east, South America, Nigeria and China. With introduction of 4G services even though we could not see theoretical values. However, we can definitely see higher throughputs in the downlink and uplink paths compared to existing 2G and 3G technologies. LTE has brought the new concept of heterogeneous networks in the cellular arena with lots of possibilities of convergence with existing networks. These networks have come to reality in such short span of time, by utilizing existing key infrastructure like power, cell towers and transmission network, to the possible extent. This brings new set of challenges to verify compatibilities and identify limitations from the green field deployments.

solutions and helps the vendors to qualify their networks at various stages. The key test range starts from innovative Packet portal solution for network wide monitoring and is integrated with Protocol Anlayzer and triple play analyzer. Receiver based Drive test tool is used for spectrum clearance, handovers & throughput verification. Protocol analyzer helps for control plane and throughput analysis with end to end call tracing between various network elements. Ethernet back haul testers help for qualifying transmission networks, helping identifying throughput bottlenecks. Base Station Analyzer is used for qualifying eNB Performance as per 3GPP TS 36.304 V10.2.0 (2011-06), which characterizes complete transmitter performance tests. The purpose of Base-station demodulation performance requirements is to estimate how the network is performing. This helps in verification of possible eNodeB impairments, that can cause network degradation. eNB impairments include RF and baseband impairments, receiver EVM, time and frequency tracking and estimation. 3GPP recommends modulation specific error vector magnitude (EVM) requirements to ensure high quality signals of the eNB. Typical impairments of the transmitted signal modulation accuracy are analog RF distortions (frequency offset, local oscillator phase noise, amplitude/phase ripple from analog filters) as well as distortions created within the digital domain such as intersymbol interference from digital filters used for symbol shaping, finite word length effects and most important for conditions near maximum transmit power, the clipping noise from peak to average ratio reduction.

The EVM requirement ensures that the downlink throughput due to the non-ideal waveform in the eNB is only marginally reduced, typically by 5% assuming an ideal reception in the UE. The required EVM must be fulfilled for all transmission configurations and across the entire dynamic range of power levels used by the eNB. Overall the LTE EVM specification requires special attention to the higher bandwidth and smaller duplex distances. TDLTE is a critical aspect to ensure high speed mobile networks and services are enabled (4G/LTE) ensuring fast, reliable and quality services. As the popularity of mobile devices and use continue to soar, it is imperative for operators to keep in mind important test and measurement solutions, techniques and practices to deliver the highest quality.
