Link to The Gambia's national development priorities The Government of The Gambia has set national higher education goals in the fields of community planning, design and construction recognizing the need for the country to develop capacity in planning, construction and maintenance of built facilities for rural and urban settings. Project purpose The project will create a community development-oriented, studio-centered, undergraduate university program, focusing on design-planning and design-construction for The Gambia. It will work with the existing construction sector and several communities to gain broad acceptance of the critical need to use knowledge of nature and culture, such that students, graduates and others create more favourable conditions for the growth of a sustainable built environment. Expected outcomes Expected outcomes include the innovative partnerships between selected communities and the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI); capacity for collaborative peer education models in which communities share expertise and experience; more effective partnerships between GTTI and stakeholders in the planningdesign-construction sector; increased capacity of the sector to assess its education needs and develop programs to address them; and improved capacity of The Gambia's university system, the planning-designconstruction sector and selected communities to create a sustainable built environment. Beneficiaries Project beneficiaries include GTTI faculty and students, stakeholders in the planning-design-construction sector and members of at least four communities in The Gambia.
