Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada

Transmitting Elite Type through the Alicias and Adeens

There are few cow families that can rival the accomplishments of the Adas when it comes to show ring success and transmitting elite type. This was highlighted by the recent Impact of Ada Sale that averaged an estimated $6,200 on 103 head all from a single bloodline. For generations, this family has dominated the North American show circuit, and as we near the big dance on the colored shavings, it is without a doubt that the next generation of Adas will be there vying for All-American titles.

All-American Adeen
The Excellent-94 2E DOM Ms Kingstead Chief Adeen is a full sister to Alicia and can be linked to names like Atwood, Atlee, Ariel and Autumn. Ms Kingstead Chief Adeen was a foundation cow for several herds that had the opportunity to own her. Butlerview Farms owned Chief Adeen from 1999 until she passed away in 2011 at the age of 14, leaving behind a plethora of daughters. The legacy of Adeen has only just begun with over 30 Excellent daughters, several young Very Good two-year-olds and many left to freshen, there is no doubt in the brood cow status of this industry elite.

Origins
Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada was born Sept. 13, 1986, the Hanoverhill Starbuck daughter of Aikenbrae Sheik Arlene, Good Plus-80-2YRCAN, on the Aitkenbrae farm in Holstein, Ontario. In 1989, prior to her debut on the colored shavings, Ada moved to the United States, purchased by Lawson Bennett and Hygerian Farms. Ada stood third at Madison in the senior two-year-old class behind Dupasquier Stab Winnie and Comestar Laurie Sheik. Ada moved again in December 1989 to Maryland under the new ownership of Gayridge and Kingstead Farm. The following fall, Ada was named Unanimous AllAmerican Senior Three-Year-Old. There is no doubt that Ada was a tremendous show cow, but it is her brood cow status through the impact of her two Donnandale Skychief daughters that makes her a true legend in Holstein history.

"Adeen is one of the most influential and one of the only cows in the breed with offspring over +2500 on genomics and All-American progeny."
It was the flush to Maughlin Storm early in Adeens career that might just have been the most influential mating. It produced the Excellent-91 DOM Storm Allison, Very Good-88 DOM Storm Adeline, and Very Good-88 DOM Storm Amberlee dam of the great Durham Atlee. The mating to Comestar Lee produced four Excellent daughters (94-92-91-90), including Amlaird Lee Alice EX-94, owned by Milksource Genetics, Wisconsin. The mating to Regancrest Elton Durham resulted in at least eight Excellent daughters scattered worldwide. But could it be the more recent flushes to Atwood and Goldwyn that cause the family to truly hit the limelight? The five young Atwood

All-American Alicia
One of only 35 registered Holsteins in North American to be classified Excellent-97, Shoremar S Alicia is the eldest of the famous Skychief daughters of Starbuck Ada. Alicia, nominated All-American five times in milking form, was the Supreme Champion of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 2000. With more than a dozen excellent daughters from a variety of mating sires, there is no doubt that Alicia is the next generation brood cow. As you look through todays sale catalogs, you will find most of these lines to trace back through either

One young Atwood daughter, with a double dose of Adeen genetics, is BVK Atwood Arianna Very Good-89-2YR. Arianna was nominated All-American Spring Yearling in 2011 and named Intermediate Champion of the 2012 Illinois State Holstein Show. Watch for Arianna on the colored shavings at Madison! The demand for offspring out of this spectacular Atwood have already skyrocketed with a first choice mutually agreeable sire selling for $29,000 on the 2012 International Intrigue Sale. "Right now the two best young cows [Arianna and Abrianna] are her [Adeen] daughters, and they are going to be the foundation of the next generation on our farm," Butler said. Ariannas full sister, BVK Atwood Andrea, owned by Rick Allyn, Michael Heath, and Jason Lloyd was fourth spring calf at the 2010 International Holstein Show and freshened this spring looking phenomenal. Andrea is scored Very Good-88-2YR and was the second place junior two-year-old at the 2012 New York Spring International Holstein Show and will also hit the tanbark this fall.

"Atlee stayed in North Carolina to calve and had a heifer calf. We trucked her from North Carolina to Massachusetts for their state show on one of the hottest days of the summer, but she pulled it together and won her class the following day," Heath shared. She later placed 15th in the senior two-year-old class at World Dairy Expo. As a senior three-year-old she was suppose to be due September 1, but we must have had a wrong breeding date. She ended up calving mid-September and the partners weren't sure if she would be ready, Heath said. Suggesting that they didnt have anything to lose, Heath convinced his partners to send her on the trailer and if she wasnt right she didnt have to show but at least she would be looked at. Less than a week later, MD-Delight Durham Atlee was named Reserve Intermediate Champion of the 2005 International Holstein Show.

Michael Heath, Heath Holsteins

She is worldwide known by name and I dont know how big of name she would have been if she wouldnt have gone to Madison.

Atlee Impact
She stole the hearts of Holstein enthusiasts on that October day when she paraded across the colored shavings and was named reserve intermediate champion of the 2005 International Holstein Show. Anyone that saw Atlee that year knows she had the highest, widest rear udder in the show and it is nice to see her come through in the Atwood daughters, shared Steve Velthuis, Velthuis Farms. MD-Delight Durham Atlee scored Excellent-92 GMD DOM is one of the industrys most admired Durham daughters. Atlee co-owner Michael Heath was working his last sale as a professional fitter, the Maryland Convention Sale, when he first fell in love with Atlee. Where we had the fitting chute set up, Atlee was tied just six feet away. I kept looking at the calf, liking the calf, looking at the calf, liking the calf but she was small for her age, shared Heath. About a year later Heath traveled to North Carolina to Fosters, who bought Atlee on the Maryland Convention Sale. Priced at $20,000 as a springing heifer, Heath took the chance on Atlee. He liked the pedigree and thought she could make money and sell embryos as long as she went Very Good-85 as a two-year-old. Another reason he took the gamble is Heath co-owned Chief Adeen as a two-year-old before she sold to Butlerview. I called Rick Allyn to partner and he recommended Jason Lloyd and we ended up buying Atlee, Heath commented.

Heath was also quick to credit his partners, Rick Allyn and Jason Lloyd, in the success of Atlee. From marketing, to getting her ready at the shows, to calving her out before Madison, it was a true team effort to help Atlee rise to stardom. While her career was short, having to be put down due to cancer in 2008, her impact has been colossal. It was the golden flush to Braedale Goldwyn that resulted in the current number one proven type sire following the August 2012 proof release, Atwood and the $1.5 million dollar cow, Ariel. Steve Velthuis, Velthuis Farms, bought embryos from the golden flush. I ended up with 11 embryos that resulted in three heifers and five bulls. Two of the heifers, Maple-Downs-I Goldwyn Ava and Allyndale-I Goldwyn Avery, were sold via a private sale to Poly-Kow Holsteins, Minnesota and Clayton Crest Farms, Indiana. I kept Allyndale-I Goldwyn Albany, Velthuis said. From Albany, it is her two Man-O-Man daughters that Velthuis is most excited about. They are all coming through the system with high type and very compatible production numbers too, Velthuis shared. demand with a high Shamrock daughter and the #1 GPA-LPI Supersonic daughter at GPA-LPI+3490. From the five bulls, Velthuis shared that Semex had pick of the first two and Select Sires also picked out two leaving Atwood as the one left that no one wanted. He was right at the time of genomics and the other brothers were high enough that they didnt feel the need to test Atwood. We actually collected him before we got his genomics, shared Velthuis. It was a conversation between Steve Velthuis and Ed Fellers that formed a syndicate for Atwood and allowed sampling. This first proof is a result of that first semen collected and sold through the syndicate and later with the cooperation of Select Sires, Atwood became the type leader and demand soared.

Good-85 with a VG-MS for Passion Holsteins of Quebec, Canada. Ms Atlees Goldwyn Adeline just went Very Good-87-2YR-USA and is another daughter of Shottle Aubry owned by Allyn, Heath and Lloyd. The Atlee times Roy mating was also a good combination as Ms Atlees Roy Autumn stole the spotlight in 2007, winning the fall calf class at the International Holstein Show and going on to be named junior champion and All-American Fall Calf. Autumn repeated in 2008 winning All-American Milking Fall Yearling and now her daughters look to be following in her footsteps. We own a really nice Goldwyn fall calf and a Shottle spring yearling that will be going to the Royal Winter Fair from Roy Autumn, Heath shared. Atlees Timlynn Adam daughter, La-Foster Adam Arlene Very Good86 DOM, has created a unique branch of the Atlees at Regancrest Farms, Farnear Holsteins and Siemers Holsteins. At Regancrest Farms, Arlene has a Very Good-86-2YR Alexander that has been flushed with embryos exported. Farnear Shot of Adeen is the Very Good-87-2YR Shottle granddaughter of Adam Arlene being worked with extensively at Farnear Holsteins. Shot of Adeen has a +2443 GTPI Robust daughter, Farnear Ready for Adeen, and several other high genomic daughters by Freddie, Observer and Domain. Arlenes Toystory daughter, Applouis Toystory Annie Very Good-86-2YR, has high offspring at Siemers Holsteins by Explode, Bookem, Robust and Observer.

Allyndale-I Goldwyn Albany Very Good-87-2YR-CAN is only one of six Atlee Golden girls in North America. Ms Atlees Goldwyn Ariel Excellent-92 was the 2009 Reserve All-American Junior Two-YearOld and sold through the 2010 Parade of Perfection Sale in a package with sons and daughters for 1.5 million dollars. Ariel was resold through the 2012 International Intrigue Sale this past August for $52,000, and is now owned solely by Morsan Farms, Alberta, Canada. Ms Atlees Gold Abigail scored Excellent-91 DOM is owned by Whittier-Farms, Massachusetts and has a very exciting young Klassic Big Time daughter scored Very Good-88-2YR. Allyndale-I Goldwyn Avery Very-87-2YR is owned by Poly-Kow Holsteins and has several high daughters and granddaughters including the #10 GTPI Explode daughter, Poly-Kow Explode Amuse. Maple-Down-I Goldwyn Ava, Very Good-88, is another Atlee all-star currently on a continuous flush program at Clayton Crest Farms. And last but not least, Ms Atlee Goldwyn Arista is Very Good-88 and has been flushed extensively by owners Lloyd, Allyn and Heath with embryos exported worldwide. Ms Atlees Shottle Aubry, Very Good-88-2YR DOM, is the only Shottle daughter of Atlee and a full sister to Aftershock at ABS Global (PTAT+3.32). "Aubrey is due in October and looks great. We are looking forward to her calving in," shared Butler. Aubry has several high genomic daughters by Alchemy, Shamrock, Gold Chip and Epic to name as few as well as a +2190 GTPI Snowman son, Mr Aubreys Artistic and a +2384 GTPI Observer son, Mr Aubrey Observer Art, at Select Sires. Allyndale-I Sanchez Angelica is Aubrys first Very Good daughter calving at 23 months of age and scoring Very

Dominating Type
With the graduation of sons AltaAmazing, Avalanche, Atlantic, Atticus, Aftershock, Attic and now Atwood, the Atlee sons are leading the industry transmitting her elite type. The former #1 genomic type sire, Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood, is scored Excellent-90 and easily tops the PTAT list for proven sires at +4.16T following the August 2012 run where he received his first official proof. Dairymen worldwide love their Atwoods with the early daughters scoring very well and dominating the young cow classes at national shows across the U.S. and Canada. Further proven by the five junior two-year-old Atwood daughters, all scored Very Good-87 or higher and mentioned above direct from Adeen. In my opinion, G W Atwood will be the breeds most significant type sire since Durham and Goldwyn. G W Atwood sires those tall dairy open rib cows with amazing udders and feet and legs. His daughters can be a bit immature as young cows but they body down and widen out as they mature, just like the Durham and Goldwyn daughters have done. I am confident G W Atwood will be an impact sire for many years to come, at World Dairy Expo, Royal Winter Fair and other major shows around the globe, shared Charlie Will, Select Sires. The #2 proven type sire at +3.77T is the Alta bull, Mr Atlees At-

laAmazing. Mr Atlees GW Avalanche-ET is the #7 PTAT on the list and is marketed through Field of Dreams Genetics. Maple-Downs-I G W Atlantic is the #24 proven type sire at +3.02T and like his full brother Atwood, is marketed through Select Sires. Attic and the #11 Conformation bull in Canada, Atticus, are available through Semex and add to the list of outstanding Goldwyn sons of MD-Delight Durham Atlee. The Shottle son at ABS Global, Inc., Ms Atlees Aftershock, appeared in August as the #9 PTAT proven sire at +3.32. This tremendous line-up certainly adds credit to Atlees brood cow status and may even be an industry first!

Influence Around the World

The prominence of this prolific type family can certainly be seen throughout North America, but with the export of embryos and semen, the impact has spread across continents. Embryos from the golden flush were exported to the UK resulting in Heavenly Golden Atlee Very Good-87-2YR-UK and Ridgefield Gold Atlee Very Good-88-2YR-UK. Golden Atlee is owned by Ponderosa and has daughters by ManO-Man, Sanchez and Shottle. Gold Atlee is owned by Riverdane Holsteins and has a Very Good-88-2YR Shottle daughter, Riverdane Shottle Amber (+2072G) at Willsbro Holsteins and Riverdane Shottle Angel (+2071G) at Ponderosa. Amber and Angel are both 3.77 for type, making them the #1 PTAT Shottle daughters in Europe. Ridgefield Delete available through Xentica Fontao, Spain is also the result of an embryo exported from the golden flush. A full brother to Atwood, Delete has a GTPI of +1923 and +3.50T. "Spanish breeders showed great interest for Delete, his family and pedigree just from the very start, he has been one of our best sellers, that's why he has already 1,300 registered daughters in the Spanish herdbook (all of them born between Nov. 2011 and Aug. 2012), but he has also been used a lot in other countries, for example he has about 500 registered daughters in Austria. We have exported his semen to several countries, not only European countries (mainly Germany and Austria), but Canada, too. His first milking daughters have already been scored and they are creating lots of excitement amongst the Spanish breeders," shared Mauricio de los Santos, Xentica Fontao. Lavenham Adeen Excellent-90-UK and Skyhigh Durham Adeen Excellent-92-UK are two Durham daughters direct from Adeen with several offspring in the UK, including Holmland Goldwyn Adeen the Very Good-88 EX-MS two-year-old. In France, Bon Temps has two Very Good-86-2YR-FR Goldwyn granddaughters of Amlaird Lee Alice Excellent-94. Dam is a Very Good-87 Durham that produced the former #1 PTAT heifer in Europe by Explode and topped the Vente DOrne Sale in 2011 for 11.000. And of course there is the ultra popular Shottle daughter, Anya Very Good-2YR-NL of Bolleholster Holsteins, the former #2 PTAT cow in Europe and dam to the #1 PTAT Sanchez in the world. Katsumi Ito, Genetics Hokkaido shared, Adeen family is working very well in Japan. We have lots of daughter out of Adeen by Durham, Dundee, etc. One of her daughters was a grand champion cow at the Hokkaido Black and White Show, that is the biggest spring show in Japan. It was Tanaka Farm's TMR Adeen Dundee Chief-ET, the Dundee daughter of Chief Adeen that was named first place senior three-yearold and grand champion.

Looking to the Future

The legacy of this elite type transmitting family has only just begun. Rooted by the tremendous Starbuck Ada and the Skychief sisters, Alicia and Adeen, coupled with the mating decisions of true Holstein breeders, this family has already began to flourish worldwide. Only time will tell what the next generation of Adas will do when they hit the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo, but whatever the result, there is no question in the influence that this family has had on the Holstein breed.
